I love a good record store, and for this episode, I’m focused one of the greatest record stores in Chicago history: The Flip Side. The Flip Side: Where Chicago Rocked is a new book about the birth, innovation, success and eventual end of the Flip Side chain. To talk about the book, I’m joined by co-author Ken Churilla, who wrote the book with Flip Side owners Carl and Larry Rosenbaum, and Chicago radio legend Jeff Schwartz, who led industry-changing marketing efforts for the chain. If you were around for the Flip Side days, you may also know him as “Mr. Cheap.” We met at Scooby’s (4319 Prince St, Downers Grove, IL 60515), one of Jeff’s favorite places. Sure enough, he was right: Scooby’s fries are fantastic. Jeff Schwartz is the VP of Insights and Impact at Gloat, an AI talent marketplace platform. What's happening today in the white-collar job market is as slow as it's ever going to be, according to Jeff. We're going to see disruption and substantial change in optimizing the current processes and redesigning the work with superjobs and superteams. The job you are doing today will not exist in the same form in the near future. It's not a matter of will you lose your job, but will you lose your job to someone leveraging AI and other emerging technologies. Jeff emphasizes the importance of a growth mindset during this period of transition, characterized by new approaches, mindsets and ways of thinking beyond an optimization mindset. He speaks to the importance of creative destruction. Jeff talks about how startups should focus on falling in love with solving a problem rather than the technology. He shares how Gloat is helping people find internal jobs, projects and gig markets to grow their careers or make a pivot, and companies redeploy and re-skill talent when sunsetting roles. Lastly, Jeff reflects on his storied career from public policy to the Peace Corps., investment banking to management consulting, living in several countries across the world, and how that informs his views on the global talent pool and distributed workforce.

Organizations both large and small alike, are finding it increasingly difficult to understand who exactly their workforce is, and how it is defined. The workforce has now developed into a complex ecosystem, with strategic orchestration required to align needs with outcomes. When designing a workforce framework to exist within this ecosystem, factors to take into consideration include strategic alignment, worker satisfaction and safety, optimizing productivity along with job security and workforce planning. More detail can be found in the infographic here. https://sloanreview.mit.edu/article/intentionally-orchestrating-workforce-ecosystems/?  In today's podcast episode, Dyan Finkhousen and her co-host Vik Shyam sit down with Liz Altman and Jeff Schwartz, two of the co-authors of the new book ‘Workforce Ecosystems', to discuss the changing nature of the workforce and how people and technologies can work together to create value. The challenges facing organizations today are timely, urgent, and complex. Business leaders must find new ways to manage hybrid work models, unleash diversity, equity and inclusion for all employees, and most importantly, understand the needs of talent and provide every individual with the opportunity to experience choice and growth across an organization. In January 2021, I spoke with Jeff Schwartz about Deloitte's Global Human Capital Trends Report. Jeff is an incredible subject matter expert and innovator who has had a front-row seat to the changes that have transformed and shaped the modern workplace. He's now the VP of Insights & Impact for Gloat, a pioneer of the internal talent marketplace. Trusted by some of the most respected brands in the world like Unilever, Nestlé, Seagate Technology, and Standard Chartered Bank, Gloat uses a two-sided platform that connects the talent within an organization to full-time roles, gigs, projects, mentorships, networking opportunities and more, enabling companies to democratize career development, unlock skills, and future-proof their workforces. I welcome Jeff back to the podcast to discuss how talent marketplaces are establishing a new category of HR technology and what forward-looking companies must do to succeed long-term as the world of work undergoes major shifts. We also discuss the benefits a talent marketplace provides to employees, managers and businesses as well as the future developments in this field.
