You may have seen writer, actor, and comedian Jeffery Self on the shows 30 Rock, Desperate Housewives, and Jeffery & Cole Casserole alongside Cole Escola. Or you might know him from his books, Drag Teen and A Very Very Bad Thing. Jeffery's latest book Self-Sabotage: And Other Ways I've Spent My Time came out last month. And for this week's episode, we're heading into the Sewers archive to revisit my conversation with Jeffery from 2017, when we talked about forming a rebel theater troupe in his small southern hometown; testing his capacity for sass on television; and creating the circle of friends that he knew he needed in his life. We'll have that conversation in a minute. First, if you're enjoying The Sewers of Paris, I hope you'll consider supporting the show on Patreon. Christopher Landon - director of Happy Death Day and Freaky - is back with his latest film, Drop. I was a HUGE fan of both of those crowd-pleasing, horror-comedies (one of the most underutilized genres in Hollywood today) but I didn't quite love the premise or trailer for Drop. I don't know if that's because I was expecting kind of his usual shtick of a fun sci-fi spin on a slasher. Even Heart Eyes, which he wrote alongside one of his Freaky co-writer Michael Kennedy, was a slasher combined with another genre, rom-coms. And, to great success I might add. I just thought the premise required such a crazy leap of suspension of disbelief that I just couldn't get into the idea. Did the film win me over? Find out in this review!Drop:Directed by: Christopher LandonWritten by: Jillian Jacobs, Christopher RoachProduced by: Michael Bay, Jason Blum, Brad Fuller, Cameron FullerExecutive Producers: Macdara Kelleher, Sam Lerner, Ron LynchMusic by: Bear McCrearyCinematography by: Marc SpicerEditing by: Ben BaudhuinCasting by: Ally Conover, Sarah Domeier Lindo, Terri TaylorProduction Design by: Susie CullenCostume Design by: Gwen Jeffares HourieCast: Meghann Fahy, Brandon Sklenar, Violett Beane, Jacob Robinson, Reed Diamond, Gabrielle Ryan, Jeffery Self, Ed Weeks, Travis NelsonSynopsis: Violet, a widowed mother on her first date in years, arrives at an upscale restaurant where she is relieved that her date, Henry, is more charming and handsome than she expected. But their chemistry begins to curdle as Violet begins being irritated and then terrorized by a series of anonymous drops to her phone.
Drop is about a woman who goes on a really, really bad date, replete with ominous drop messages, murder, and her family being put in peril. Rachel joins us to discuss this exciting new thriller from Christopher Landon and Blumhouse.
A man chanced upon his wife's journals when he was cleaning the closets. He simply couldn't help himself. He read some of them, and learned about her erotic desires in a way he hadn't known before. It made him fall in love with her all over again. But now what? Should he tell her what he did? Blindfold magic! A woman had a transcendent experience when her boyfriend blindfolded her and then...removed the blindfold. There he was! And he was suddenly more beautiful than ever. On the Magnum, Dan welcomes writer, and actor Jeffery Self. What do two introverted, homosexual men have to talk about? Plenty, it turns out! Self's new memoir is deeply personal and fearless. He and Dan chat about the pros and cons of male sex work, why straight men are so jealous of gay men, and the deep dread the words "gay cruise" inspire in them both. Also, they take a call from a woman whose boyfriend is unaware of how stinky his balls are. So you don't want to miss that. And, a woman's boyfriend is wracked with guilt when she gives him deep, gag-inducing blowjobs. She loves it, but he can't get over the misogynist associations. Our first in-studio guest in almost 3 years has finally arrived (LA traffic!), and it's none other than our dear friend Jeffery Self! After we complete our monthly check-in about what the Haim sisters are up to, we turn our attention to a topic we've long been afraid to touch: golf. Where did it come from? Do we need to learn to play if we want to make it in the business world? Is there a "pickleball" but for golf? And finally, are gay guys allowed to play? Plus: Jeffery comes out as a Christmas decor fanatic (it all goes back to his parents), Sam learns about local LA customs, and George recounts a harrowing celebrity run-in. See you on the links! Host Bowen Yang defines sex in the context of Search Party as “this recurring thing that undermines trust or solidarity between all the characters on the show.” This is certainly true for Elliott’s boyfriend Marc, played by Jeffrey Self. In this very “passionate” episode of the podcast, Jeffery describes the lack of sympathy he has towards his character, the performative aspects of romantic relationships, and how he overcame his real-life fear of marriage. Meanwhile, actress Busy Philipps examines why sex is so destructive on Search Party and in our culture at large, the reason so many child actors—including herself—get married young, and why Four Seasons Travel would be her dream sponsor if she were to renew her vows. Finally, Busy explains how her appearance on season 4 of Search Party came about, and how she was able to avoid any spoilers while she was on set! Hey, remember when we thought the bees were going to kill *us* instead of the other way around? LOL! This 1974 bug paranoia flick stars none other than Gloria Swanson as a real queen bee (and queen B) alongside Kate Jackson, Eddie Albert and a whole lot of actual bees that were not compensated for their participation. Sam is joined by actor and comedian Jeffery Self to discuss this film, just one of the many made-for-TV wonders tackling the subject of deadly bees. This week, the incredible and newly married Jeffery Self (Search Party, A Very, Very Bad Thing) joins Matt and Dave in the studio to talk all things pre-wedding, breaking up on social media, checking your pants at the door, and more! Plus, Dave and Matt go deep on Justin Timberlake, the Jessicas and more. This episode is sponsored by Roman and Casper Mattresses (code: HOMO).
This episode gets a sultry start before welcoming guest Jeffery Self (30 Rock, You're Killing Me, A Very Very Bad Thing) joins to whine about the plethora of attention given to terrible famous men when there are so many fabulous women to be honored! They pair it with a wine that is associated with women that deserves respect: a fantastic 2013 Chardonnay by Deovlet Santa Maria Valley Solomon Hills Vineyard from sponsor Gregory Condes Wines! Honor the women, honor the wine. Ellen's hip sip tip was cab-off between a mag of Margaux and Stag's Leap Artemis! France vs. Napa... Shaughn's hip sip tip is The Pure Hoppiness by Alpine Brewing--he's going beer this week! They take a question from the mailbag about wine and erectile disfunction and their dick sip tip is that wine is part of a healthy diet and a healthy diet is good for your boner. But they are no medical experts so take all that with a grain of salt. Before getting into wine they discuss how to delve into beer for the non-beer drinker. Ellen recommends starting with a sour. Shaughn implores both to believe in beer. This dissolves into how to drink all night and not get tooooo trashed. A little trashy is okay. Also...what the hell is orange wine? Get your questions answered here! Then they get into the whine and how distressing it is that people are sad about their male heroes being taken down. Jeffery stresses that women need to not be aged out of the system. More Jane Fonda, please! Or can we have a year where men aren't allowed to work? Chardonnay paired with this because there is such negative stigma around women drinking it. A balanced sophisticated Chardonnay does not a basic bitch make. The lightning round covers: Where the town of Chardonnay is located, the difference between new and used oak, and Chardonnay's parent grapes. The 7th episode of season 2 features Search Party actor & Drag Teen author Jeffery Self on growing up gay in Georgia, early 20s mistakes, acting a fool post-breakup, NY v LA (we solved it!), his foreign guy fetish & pretty unequivocally NOT WANTING KIDS (until he's filthy rich). Please rate & review to tell us what you love!
Last week's guest was Jeffery Self, a relatively young actor and writer who's broken into the entertainment industry often on his own terms. This week, I'm speaking with Randy West, an industry veteran whose experience was vastly different. From sweet-talking his way onto sets to chasing big breaks with a single-minded determination, Randy learned to play the game at a time when the rules were very unforgiving.
Do you have an inner performer lurking just below the surface -- or has your inner performer burst above the surface, resolutely refusing to ever be ignored? My guest this week is the fantastic Jeffery Self, who has for his entire life been every inch an entertainer -- whether forming a rebel theater troupe as a teen in his small southern hometown; testing his capacity for sass in the various TV roles where you've probably seen him; and creating the books and shows and circle of friends that he knew he needed in his life.
Put on your largest hat and longest gloves, because our guests Tim McKernan and Jeffery Self are taking us to church! Praise!
