"I couldn't let the secrets that controlled my past control my future." — Bridey Telen-Heidel In this compelling episode of Uncorking a Story, Mike Carlon interviews author and TEDx speaker Bridey Thelen-Heidel about her powerful memoir, Bright Eyes: Surviving Our Monsters and Learning to Live Without Them. Bridey opens up about her journey through a tumultuous childhood marked by frequent relocations and the trauma of living with her mother's choices. Through resilience and a commitment to healing, Bridey transformed her pain into a narrative that offers hope and solidarity to others with similar experiences. Her story touches on the importance of reclaiming one's truth, the therapeutic power of writing, and the challenges of publishing personal memoirs. This episode is a must-listen for writers, readers, and anyone interested in the redemptive power of storytelling. Key Takeaways Writing a memoir is not just about telling your story; it's about taking ownership of your truth. Repressed trauma can lead to physical illness; healing often requires facing those hidden pains. The journey to publication is challenging, especially for memoir writers dealing with personal topics. Resilience is built through connection and a commitment to self-love and healing. The hybrid publishing route offers new opportunities for authors who may not have mainstream representation. Memoir writing can bring estrangement within families but also offers liberation for the writer and validation for readers with similar experiences. In 1952, a young man watched a hypnotist at a dinner party. He immediately became obsessed with the subject, and started seeking out every book on the subject he could. He soon took what he read, and started using hypnosis as a way to treat a variety of things, like smoking and insomnia. But then a person walked into his life that changed it forever. So snuggle in my spooky friends…you are about to hear the tale of a Chicago housewife who became world famous after being hypnotized, and remembering that she was actually was born in 1798 in Ireland as Bridey Murphy. We got merch! The Bucks welcome back Bridey Thelen-Heidel and Bruce Rettig, two Lake Tahoe authors who shared their thoughts on their books with us early in the year. If you want to hear the original interviews, Bridey was episode 118 and Bruce was episode 125.Bridey talked about the off-Broadway show in which she performed and also gave us the good news that her book, tentatively titled Bright Eyes, will be published August 27, 2024. You can check out her work at her blog, Bright Eyes. While still busy promoting Refraction and doing his day job as a graphic designer, Bruce has begun working on his next project, which will actually be a trilogy. We brought up the notorious Hank the Tank, a female bear that has been terrorizing Tahoe and Bridey related that a bear just broke into her garage and chugged down the oat milk in the fridge. She had to call Tahoe Toogee to bear-proof her house. We're hoping to have Toogee on as a guest soon.Bruce provided a video of a bear cub rescue he performed a few years ago. We can bearly wait to have Bridey and Bruce back again. “They didn't believe that I was gay.” What if your safety depended on proving your sexuality? What happens when the state has the power to define queerness? And what happens if they don't believe you? Jason Thomas-Fournillier applied for asylum in the UK in 2014 after facing escalating homophobic violence in Trinidad. The Home Office initially refused his claim because they did not believe that he was gay. Nine years and several appeals later, he has still not received the right to stay here. He cannot work or vote. He lives on £35 per week. Jason is not alone. A 2020 report found that LGBT+ people seeking asylum are having claims rejected at a disproportionate rate due to an "impossible burden of proof". Ostracised from their communities, subject to repeated threats, forced into marriages, losing partners to violent attacks, many of the LGBT+ people who seek asylum in the UK have experienced immeasurable trauma. Like Jason, they often find that their journey into the asylum system begins with an assessment of the "credibility" of their queerness. People who have spent their entire lives hiding their sexuality to protect themselves are asked to quickly and confidently reverse these coping mechanisms. Bridey Addison-Child, a trans-masc British citizen, explores what happens when the authenticity of queerness is enforced by the UK Home Office. Combining testimony with reflections on queer identity, the programme follows the experiences of LGBT+ people in the UK asylum system as they grapple with proving who they are. Featuring the voices of refugees and people seeking asylum in the UK including Jason Thomas-Fournillier and Aderonke Apata, Bridey also hears from Professor of Refugee Law at SOAS Sarah Singer, and barrister and Visiting Adjunct Professor at the University of Southampton Dr. S Chelvan. Yes, the Big Apple! More great news for Bridey.https://listentoyourmothershow.com We got a voice message from VV#1, who explains to Del that the mer in mermaid is French, meaning sea. Mystery solved. Further, she gives him the bad news that TMB is already in use, meaning text me back. She suggests TMBS. You get the idea. Dave stumps Del with an object that's part of a larger object. The answer is the earth's inner core. According to USA Today and other news outlets less rigorous than TOB, the core has stopped spinning and is reversing direction. This was a misunderstanding of a scientific article that said the rotation rate was slowing, which could shave up to one millisecond off our year. A shout out to good friend Joel. Dave had breakfast with him today to wish him farewellas he sells his winter place in FL and is looking at the sunny CA desert as his new winter stomping grounds. Met him here in FL when he joined Dave's writers' group. It was clear early on that he was a more gifted writer than the rest of us. When that group broke up, he and I and our friend Laura [also at breakfast] met from time to time to critique each other's work and have a never-ending lunch afterward. Dave calls Joel and Laura his adopted bro and sis. Good luck to you Joel, as you ride into the sunset. We'll miss you Sea Stories with Cap'n JimDave met Jim a couple years ago and being an engineer, enjoyed his bridge-building stories. inevitably Jim would dredge up sailing and flying stories from his past that were far more interesting. Bucks share some of the terrific feedback on Bridey Thelen-Heidel's story We Owned the Night from her upcoming memoir , Bright Eyes. The response was dazzling and we plan to have more author interviews in the future. Bucks are wishing Bridey the best as she navigates the challenging route to publication.A listener in Switzerland sends a news story saying the Ukrainians are, in fact, using trucks to shoot down drones, much as Del's suggestion in Episode 117. Ahead of the curve once more.Del resorts to counting stars to stump Dave while Dave stumps the starstruck Del on Everything Everywhere All At Once, a spectacular feast for the senses.Del inadvertently discovers the rabbit hole known as YouTube [here since 2005] and fritters away hours of his life he will never get back. Dave steers him away from TikTok, now a formally-designated addiction. As Del says, "There is no end..."Del is disgusted by partially- frozen eggs he finds in his refrigerator. He eats them anyway. Consider this your Public Safety Announcement for the week.Del longs to invent a new word but settles for a new texting shortcut : TMB. This is particularly appropriate when commenting on the words spilling out of the mouth of a politician.Dave dig out his pickle ball paddle in search of new body parts to injure. Del sees get-well cards in his future.Science tells us how to skip stones and the Bucks nod the antlers to rockers we've lost recently-Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac, guitarist extrordinaire Jeff Beck, and David Crosby of the Byrds, CSN, and CSNY. Upcoming episodes include sea stories from Cap'n Jim and an interview with members of a French village that has taken in hundreds of Ukrainian refugees.Dave plugs his monthly column in the OLLI-Ringling College newsletter. Spiritualism Series. Episode #4 of 4. You might think that the story of Pharaoh Sety I of Egypt's 19th Dynasty ends with his death. But you'd be wrong, at least according to one 20th-century British woman, Dorothy Eady. Dorothy, who believed herself to be the reincarnation of Sety's lover Bentreshyt, is the only reason we know about this story at all. Dorothy Eady's past life, which she discovered piecemeal over time, became her obsession. It shaped everything about her. She spent the first half of her life searching for her spiritual home, Abydos, and the second half making amends for Bentrshyt's sin. Perhaps most shockingly, Dorothy, now called Omm Sety, would resume Bentreshyt's sexual love affair with King Sety 3200 years after their deaths! More on that in a bit. Today we're using the story of Omm Sety as a gateway into the history of past lives in Britain and America. Find transcripts and show notes here: www.digpodcast.org Learn more about your ad choices. When Morey Bernstein hypnotised Virginia Tighe in 1952, he took her to the time before this life and she recounted a vivid and detailed life as a young woman, known as Bridey Murphy, who lived in Cork in Ireland. The seven hypnosis sessions caused a storm when they became public and divided public opinion as the case went viral. Join us now to hear all about it in this first part of our two part coverage... the facts, the debunk, and the debunk of the debunk, as we explore the life and times of Bridey Murphy, through the memories of Virginia Tighe.

On October 8th Jovie and Bridey performed a paranormal investigation at the Dumas Brothel in Butte, Montana. During the evening they had a chance to sit down and chat with David Prince the Owner and operator of the brothel museum. The Dumas Brothel has the title of the longest running brothel in the United States, operating from 1890 until 1982. They discussed the history of the building, the paranormal activity that happens there and past investigations that have been performed. David was a font of information and gave us great insight about the building and even assisted us during our investigation. For those who want more, we have additional audio on our patron page. We even have loaded a possible EVP there for our listeners to review.

These lights have been called ghost lights, spook lights, corpse candles and will o' the wisps. On this episode of Ghostbumps Jovie and Bridey explore the possibilities. We look at examples of ghost lights in the US. From Marfa, TX to Paulding, PA. So get ready ghosties and come with us on this bumpy ride.

It's Sunday, we're Jake and Haley, and that means it's a big XL episode of The Horror Comedy Potcast! This week, we're taking you to our home of Pueblo, Colorado to talk about the curious case of Virginia Tighe - who, through hypnotism, was able to remember before she was born. Virginia, as Bridey, offers tons to think about: What happens before birth? Is purgatory real? Can you still talk to the homies there? We discuss the uncanny and impressive historically accurate things Bridey claimed, and we finish off this week's episode with a demon dad story and a kangaroo-swag disaster. If your dad is a weird raw meat eating demon, or if you have any other scary stories you'd like to be featured, email us at TheHorrorComedyPotcast@gmail.com, or DM us on Instagram!Sources for this week include:To Tell the Truth Search for Bridey Murphy Apr 4, 1966Bridey MurphyHere Comes the Bridey – Frank McNally on an Irishwoman's reincarnation in 1950s AmericaThe Bridey Murphy CrazeMorey Bernstein, Proponent of Bridey Murphy, Dies at 79Creepy Child LaughterMusic by Myuu
Izzy ends series one being interviewed about grief and creativity by co-producer Bridey. We look back on the series and how creativity is part of a bigger picture. We ponder... can creativity inspired by grief become commodified? In fact, how do you even define creativity? How do you define grief? Izzy speaks about how memory and loss can inform future creative output. Speaking to family, friends and fellow grief creatives, we come to the conclusion that grief is timeless, and though we may never fully understand it, through creativity we might find a means of expressing it.

Everyone debriefs last episode's Spree attack, with General Bellweather investigating the spell used to dampen their abilities. Autopsies of Spree victims reveal they are now attacking witches, particularly young Bellweathers. With this revelation, General Bellweather assigns a bodyguard, Bridey (Naiah Cummins), to Abigail (Ashley Nicole Williams) despite her daughter's insistence to prove her compentency. While sparring Bridey, Abagail finally breaks over letting her guard down at the wedding, and Bridey later shares her own story of grief from losing one her sisters on a mission. All the while, Raelle (Taylor Hickson) is frustrated with a lack of response in finding Scylla, so she follows necromancers into their morgue where Scylla's teacher, Izadora (Emilie Leclerc), discovers Raelle and informs her that Scylla died during the attack. Raelle is riddled with grief herself, but when Scylla's sigil appears in her hand, she steals her unit's salva rations in an effort to fly to the lighthouse on the beach where she is certain Scylla is waiting. Tally discovers Raelle's plot and with Abgail and they convince Bridey to escort them off base to rescue her. We find that Scylla is, in fact, alive, being detained and questioned by Izadora, Anacostia, and soon, Alder. This week, Georgie speaks to Brigid also known as Bridey Bunch Triplets on Instagram. Brigid had just settled down with her partner in Dublin, when they decided the time was right to try for a baby. They got pregnant straight away and were floored when her 12 week scan showed she was having triplets. Brigid tells Georgie about how she dealt with the shock, what they did to prepare and how overwhelming it was to find 35 medical professionals in the room as she gave birth. Brigid is so honest in describing what life was like with 3 small babies, how easier life became when she asked for help and all the madness in between. In particular one day, when her buggy got stuck at the tills of her local supermarket as chaos unfolded around her.

Bridey, we understand that you don’t know where the line ends (and sometimes begins), and we are anxious to teach you! At the same time, it’s just as important for the manager to explain their role as well as their do’s and don’ts. Learn the proper etiquette for early check in and lat check out. YES, there’s etiquette for that! Find out why the HELL we are talking about farting, and The Farting Preacher. Planning on “doing ‘it’” on your wedding night? You’d be surprised how many couples wait until the next morning! What are the 6 Ps, and why are they important as you plan your wedding? Hear why Deb and Nathan are already obsessed with Encore, the newest casino in Boston, and why Deb thinks it’s a FAB place to have a wedding.

Chris and Bridey Elliott are father and daughter. Chris is, of course, Chris Elliott. The guy who starred in Cabin Boy and Something About Mary. Who's currently a regular on the TV show Schitt's Creek. Tons more. Bridey, his daughter, wrote and directed a new movie called Clara's Ghost, which you can buy or rent now. It's a family collaboration: Bridey also stars in the movie, along with Chris, her sister Abby, and her mother Paula. And it's also kind of a horror movie? Listen to see what we mean. Jesse and the Elliotts talk about the film, family dynamics, and why Chris Elliott did an impression of Marlon Brando dancing around a bunch of bananas on Letterman.
Bridey, forget a Perfect Body on Your Wedding Day! Instead, focus on getting HEALTHY for your wedding, and beyond. Deb, Nathan and Kerri are joined by personal trainers Brett Franciosi + Anthony Passamonte, serving tips on getting healthy + staying inspired. They’re live from Deb’s house (which was serving too many glasses of prosecco and tequila).

This episode specializes in creepy haunted houses with potentially crazy women living inside them. And who better to have on the show than director and actor, Bridey Elliott. She's on to discuss her new film Clara's Ghost. Her film features Bridey's own mother, Paula Niedert Elliott, playing Clara, an isolated woman who begins seeing a ghost around the house. And appropriately, the film Bridey chose to discuss today is Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte starring Bette Davis. Davis' character Charlotte also believes she's seeing ghosts in her family's plantation home. These movies work well together thematically as they both touch upon paranoia, disbelief of women, and a real confusion on who is actually going crazy. Bridey talks about making her new film with her entire family, including her mother who had never acted before. She even shares a story about how she was able to shoot a scene with a naked woman walking around her childhood neighborhood. April and she also discuss the history of Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte, all the behind the scenes drama, and how this is a feminist film. Check out Clara's Ghost in theaters and streaming. With the busy holiday madness and awards season voting taking place, it's been hard to schedule an interview in the midst of it all. But I made an effort to make sure I could speak with today's delightful guest: an extremely talented young filmmaker named Bridey Elliott. You may have heard of her sister, Abby Elliott, or have had the pleasure of growing up with her dad, Chris Elliott, like I did. Bridey's feature-length debut, CLARA'S GHOST, opens on VOD today on December 7th, and I highly recommend giving it your time especially if you too have a wacky family. It's darkly comedic with a dash of the supernatural but showcases a real love for this gifted group of performers. Bridey cites some very cool influences during our conversation, two titles in particular that made me light up like a Christmas tree. In addition, we talk about crafting a character like Clara, working with the family in a familiar setting, the delights of Haley Joel Osmeont as an adult, and other topics of discussion. Listen to the interview and then be sure to check out her excellent dinner party ensemble piece now available in theaters and/or streaming! 00:00 - 11:10 - Introduction 11:11 - 30:20 - Interview w/Bridey Elliott Check out Chris & Bridey Elliott on Jimmy Kimmel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mscWl98WEms More About CLARA'S GHOST: https://www.smudge-films.com/claras-ghost/

One is William Joyce, who was known during World War II as Lord Haw Haw. He was the voice of Nazi propaganda that Germany broadcast to England during the course of the war. And the other is Virginia Tighe, who in the late 1950s was also known as Bridey Murphy. This was due to a famous incident involving hypnosis and the specter of reincarnation. You won't want to miss these two intriguing stories that involve Nazis and reincarnation.

Merry Christmas to one and all! I know we're supposed to say Happy Holidays, but this episode's topic has an especially specific twist and that's one of the reasons it SUCKS. Hallmark Christmas Movies. Wow, who even knew those were something... that someone really likes? Well, Abby Elliott SURE does and she's got something to say about it. This is the first time we've had a sibling of another guest on the show! We had her sister Bridey on the show early in the first season talking about Horror Movies, which probably couldn't have been a more opposite topic for these two Elliott gals to pick! You can see Abby as a cast member on the 2008-2012 seasons of Saturday Night Live, on the show Odd Mom Out on Bravo, and coming soon in Clara's Ghost, a film by Bridey starring the whole Elliott family! If you've got any questions, comments, or concerns about the current, past, or future Make Me Like It podcasts, shoot Dan and Kelly an email at littlepuppyquestions@gmail.com! Good afternoon everyone and welcome to another edition of The Avid Reader. Today our guest is Cara Hoffman, author of Running, published in February by Simon and Shuster. Cara is the author of the previous novels So Much Pretty, and Be Safe I Love you. She writes for the NYT, The Paris Review, Salon and NPR among others. She’s the winner of a Sundance Filmmaking Award and a MacDowell Fellowship. She received her MFA from Goddard and currently teaches at the University of Southern Maine. Running is the story of three protagonists. I like to think of Bridey primarily and then Milo and Jasper. Each is a runner. Running from or to what is what concerns the book to a certain degree, but it’s also comforting, at least for me, who never really wants to be in any one destination that running is a perfectly good lifestyle by itself. Bridey is a young girl in Athens who befriends Jasper and then Milo and the three of them forge a relationship built from love, trust and a certain disbelief in the escapability of our planet. The book weaves in and out of the past as well as Athens and New York City, where Milo, now grown and a successful poet, can’t shake off the ghosts of the years in which he found the most in life. With Jasper and Bridey gone, he yearns for one and seeks the other while trying to establish a stable life for himself, still unwilling to admit to himself that there is a regular world out there, with shoes and socks and iPhones and rain ponchos. In all, running gives us a chance, especially if we ever lived that life to reminisce about what we may have lost (or not) and if we didn’t live that life then to visualize it in living color, for perhaps the first time. Welcome Cara and thanks for joining us today

History Dweebs - A look at True Crime, Murders, Serial Killers and the Darkside of History
Perhaps the most famous case of past life recall is that of Virginia Tighe who recalled her past life as Bridey Murphy. Virginia was the wife of a Virginia businessman in Pueblo, Colorado. While under hypnosis in 1952, she told Morey Bernstein, her therapist, that over 100 years ago she was an Irish woman named Bridget Murphy who went by the nickname of Bridey. During their sessions together, Bernstein marveled at detailed conversations with Bridey, who spoke with a pronounced Irish brogue and spoke extensively of her life in 19th century Ireland. When Bernstein published his book about the case, The Search for Bridey Murphy in 1956, it became famous around the world and sparked an excited interest in the possibility of reincarnation. Episode four has FINALLY arrived! This time, we're talking about horror movies. This is a divisive topic guys. We know. A lot of people LOVE horror movies. We know. But like, we don't. Our guest, Bridey Elliott is one of those big weirdos who likes them. She made a pretty good argument, but then doesn't everyone on this stupid, dumb show? Don't forget to check out "Fort Tilden," the feature Bridey starred in last summer and her Sundance short, "Affections." It's really fucking good. And just keep a general baby hawk's eye on Bridey's imdb page. She's always getting mixed up in fun projects! Theme Music by John Haskell Logo Art by Darin Shuler

Whoa! It's already St. Patrick's Day weekend - Christian and Shonali have way too much to catch up on. We talk Riverdance, Bronies, and walking strategies for New Yorkers. Shonali is dissed by her dad. Christian is in a TMZ phase. Shonali bombed an audition and Christian booked his. We share diatribes on hipster diatribes. Our special guest this episode is comedienne and actress Bridey Elliott. She just returned from Austin, where the film in which she co-stars, Fort Tilden, just won the Grand Jury Prize at SXSW. We talk animal handling, teen age angst, and growing up in a comedy family. Her father is Chris Elliott, sister is Abby Elliott, and grandfather is Bob Elliott. We also talk boyfriends, strategies for avoiding getting raped, Siri and butt dialing. In addition to acting, Bridey does stand up and is also performing in Absolutely, her Maude Night improv group at the UCB Theatre. We had so much fun having Bridey as our guest. You will hear Shonali laughing the ENTIRE episode. GAWSH! Our Episode 22 song is Sunshine Love by Rikki Ililonga.
Bridey Elliot (UCB Theatre) has never seen "House of Cards" so Craig introduces her to a spoilerific episode from the first season. Bridey and Craig delve deep into the Netflix Original show, discuss how Vin Diesel would respond to being offered almonds, and Bridey explains why the AOL Instant Messenger "Smarter Child" thought she was a terrorist.
