Dr. Laura Froyen joins me again to chat about the power of taking time for yourself. As moms and caregivers, it's easy to get caught up in taking care of everyone else's needs. But what about our own?  Laura shares her perspective on why retreats like my annual Vibrant Happy Women Retreat are so rejuvenating. Getting away allows us to get out of the deep end and stop treading water - to rest, reconnect with ourselves, broaden our views, and realign our inner compass.  In our conversation, Laura reflects on how attending retreats has helped her rediscover her own identity beyond motherhood. We also talk about why time away is healthy for partnerships, allowing spouses and kids to step up at home.  I hope Laura's wisdom inspires you to prioritize self-care, whether through travel or simple moments of solitude. As she reminds us - we need time to just be, free from others' demands. It's essential for living vibrantly and authentically.  And if you want to join us at this year's retreat in Mexico Feb 7-11th, visit JenRiday.com/retreat    In This Episode, You'll Discover... Why traveling without a spouse can be liberating and allow for powerful personal growth and self-discovery. An unexpected twist at the retreat that brought Laura newfound happiness and energy. The social, emotional, and spiritual value of solitude and the importance of nurturing your own identity outside of motherhood.  The unique way a retreat illuminates the path ahead for you.  The power of being embraced by a community of welcoming and kind-hearted women.  The importance of remembering what it's like to be an individual human being without anyone needing anything from you. And much more!   "It's okay to remember what it's like to be a whole and independent human being where no one else needs anything from you." - Jen Riday   Key Moments: [00:02:11] Losing ourselves in motherhood. Enjoy this special presentation from the first ever Whinypaluza Ultimate Marriage & Parenting Summit! Laura Froyen received her PhD in Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) with an emphasis in Couple and Family Therapy from Michigan State University in 2014. While pursuing her doctorate she worked as a Couple and Family Therapist in the state of Michigan helping families navigate difficult times. Her research focused on how marital and family relationships influence parenting and child development. She continued this research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as an Assistant Professor of HDFS and UW-Extension as an Early Childhood and Parenting Specialist. She helps individuals, partners, and co-parents become the parents they are longing to be. She helps overwhelmed and disconnected parents reconnect with themselves, each other, and their children. She helps parents bring ease, calm and JOY back into their hectic and chaotic lives. She helps parents stop yelling and start feeling confident in themselves. She does this through her unique approach to parenting that is grounded in research and driven by the overarching goal of restoring balance and compassion to families.   Listen to this insightful Whinypaluza episode with Laura Froyen about how everyday life gives us moments to shine light on our wounds that still need healing, creating opportunities for repair and growth. Here is what to expect on this week's show: There is no such thing as perfection, only “good enough.” There is a cycle of mistake/repair that creates growth. Acknowledge your triggers, and use them for growth, until they are no longer triggers. What are the different kinds of triggers? Repeating behavioral patterns is a way of your brain creating structure, efficiency, and making sense of things. Rules that you had as a child can become triggers for you as a parent if your children do things that would have been breaking those rules. It creates a sense of something being wrong. Addressing your triggers and healing yourself is about understanding we are all deserving of love and compassion. Awareness is the first step. Building in self-regulation is the second step. Learning mindfulness and breathwork is vastly beneficial in healing.   Connect with Laura: Website https://www.laurafroyen.com/ Facebook https://www.facebook.com/laurafroyen/ Follow Rebecca Greene Blog  https://www.whinypaluza.com/ Book 1  https://bit.ly/WhinypaluzaBook Book 2 https://bit.ly/whinybook2 Facebook  https://www.facebook.com/whinypaluzaparenting Instagram https://www.instagram.com/becgreene5/ @becgreene5 TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@whinypaluzamom?lang=en @whinypaluzamom Learn more about your ad choices. When was the last time your ADHD affected your kids and you were kicking yourself for it? While you get frustrated enough that your ADHD affects your own life, it's 100 times worse when it hurts your kids. Meet my friend, Laura Froyen, PhD. Laura and I connected over our mutual love for advocating for kids. Her take on gentle parenting is refreshing and doable.  In this episode, Laura and I chat about how to deal with ADHD as a mom on her podcast, The Balanced Parent Podcast, where she helps families connect more deeply and authentically. Laura writes: ADHD is getting a lot of buzz out there in the world recently, and many adults, especially women (who as girls perhaps had their symptoms overlooked) are getting diagnosed, sometimes alongside their kids. I've spoken to quite a few of you who have gone through this process and so many of you have expressed initial feelings of relief, that there is a real, true reason that things have always seemed a bit harder for you, and it's not because you're a failure, you're just wired a bit differently. But after that relief there tends to be a feeling of... "Ok, what now?" So, if you're newly diagnosed with ADHD , or even if you have some suspicions that this may be going on for you or your kids, this episode is for you! I have brought in a friend and a colleague, Patricia Sung, who is an ADHD expert and the host of the Motherhood in ADHD podcast. She helps moms with ADHD get themselves together one step at a time and feel confident in running their family life. After years of serial entrepreneurship and teaching middle school, she has a uniquely practical perspective on strategies for building a life that works when your brain is different. Whether you have it yourself and it complicates your life or if you're noticing it in your kids, Patricia will help us figure out how to make things a little bit easier for you. She also discussed the stages our children go through and how we can't compare one child to another and expect them to be the same at the same ages. Allana Robinson taught us about how the brain works. She dives into thought, reasoning, and executive functioning in kids. Consistency and predictability will lead to a better sense of security in our kids. Judy Herman discusses marriage and navigating emotions. Be curious with your partner about how they feel, it pulls you away from being judgmental. Learning to empathize will go a long way. In regards to choosing a partner, we pick, project, and provoke, which relates to your relationship with your parents when you were a child. Dr. Laura Froyen teaches us that reframing triggers can create an opportunity to grow and learn. We can “reparent” ourselves and learn things we did not learn as children. Learning coping skills when you are calm will help you when you are in the midst of the conflict. Way, waaay back in https://yourparentingmojo.com/003-your-toddler-isnt-reading-yet-neither-is-mine/ (Episode 3), we wondered whether we had missed the boat on teaching our babies to read (didn't you teach your baby how to read?). We eventually decided that we hadn't, but given that many parents have a goal of instilling a love of reading into their children, what's the best way to go about doing that? And what if your child is the kind who wriggles out of your lap at the mere sight of a book? Our second-ever repeat guest, Dr. Laura Froyen, helps us to delve into the research on this topic. We conclude by talking through some of the things parents can do to promote a love of reading, because it turns out it's not as intuitive as one might think!

How to Become a More Conscious Parent

In this episode of the Becoming You podcast, I welcome Dr. Laura Froyen. With a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS), she helps individuals, partners, and co-parents become the parents they are longing to be. Listen in as we talk all things manifestation and the Law of Attraction! How did your car accident change your life? Laura: This experience saved me from living an existence that was unsatisfying and unfulfilling and it helped me step more fully into my purpose. How did the accident affect your parenting? Laura: As I reduced my overall stress and gave myself the space and time to get to know my true values and goals and priorities for my family and my children, my thoughts began to align with my values. Instead of allowing my conditioned responses to my children's pain and shortcomings take over, I let them know that disappointment happens. That's what conscious parenting is: finding your resonance so that your thoughts and outward actions are in alignment with your deep, inner truth. I assume you've done inner child work on yourself. Laura: I like the Internal Family Systems modality of therapy. It's the idea that we all have an inner family that is used to being in charge of things. We also all have a core self that is naturally compassionate and curious and confined. Oftentimes, that core self has been pushed to the side so that other internal family members can run the show. Once we start leading our internal family from that core self—our true self—I'm that wise leader that my inner children sit in a circle around and listen closely to. We need to be that wise inner kindergarten teacher. If a client tells you that they've hit a rough patch and all they and their child seem to do is yell at each other, what would you tell them? Laura: I would like you to really get curious with yourself around those moments of conflict with your child. Curiosity is our biggest superpower. So, the internal work of conscious parenting is noticing the narrative, not beating ourselves up for it, and asking ourselves what we're really afraid of. Then, ask what the kindest, most compassionate part of yourself has to say about that fear. When clients come to you, how much would you say if the self-work versus external directed work with the child? Laura: Kids do exactly what they are supposed to be doing in their childhood. It's always us. The two types of parents that come to me. One is the old-school, mainstream type who rely on time-outs, threats, bribes, etc., in which case my job is mainly to teach them about childhood development and arm them with the knowledge to know how best to respond to how children naturally behave as they age. What five tips can you give to someone who is beginning their journey towards becoming a more intentional, conscious parent? Laura: 1) Get support or find a community of like-minded folks who are looking to make changes and view children the way you want to view children. 2) Get clear on what your true goals, values, and priorities are when it comes to raising your kids. 3) Come to terms with the idea that your child is not you, and that they have their own wants, needs, personality, and goals. 4) When things get hard, slow down. 5) Be kind to yourself. If I were a doctor, “be kind” would be my prescription for every family. Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive

This episode grew out of a post that long-time friend of the podcast, Dr. Laura Froyen, published in a respectful parenting group that we both work in as admins. In the post she asked people to share how they felt before and after they discovered respectful parenting, and then she created a word cloud of the results. The words in the 'before' cloud were perhaps predictable - things like 'worried,' 'overwhelmed,' 'resentful,' and 'guilty.' And the most common word in the 'after respectful parenting' word cloud? Exhausted. What on earth is going on here? In this episode I explore five important reasons why respectful parenting is so hard - and what to do about each of them.   [accordion] [accordion-item title="Click here to read the full transcript"] BODY [/accordion-item] [/accordion]

Today we have with us Dr. Laura Froyen from the balanced parent podcast and we discuss the importance of holding a Yes Day with your children and how you can go about that. She gives us two different ways we can go about doing a Yes Day, number one being planned out with ground rules and you tell your child when the day is coming. The second option is a lot more internal and kept to yourself. Your kids don't know that it's coming and it's kind of spontaneous, but you create a Yes Day on the days that you just want to do something fun and different with your kids. One Yes Day all my daughters wanted to do was play board games with me all day long, and I just said, “Yes, yes, yes.” And they just were so happy that we didn't need to spend any money, they didn't watch any screens, and then they wanted to go for a walk, and that was it. Even though we are in the middle of a pandemic, the holidays are still coming, and we can (and definitely should) still cultivate an intentional holiday season with our kids and family. Especially since things will look different this year as we celebrate these holidays during these unprecedented pandemic times.   Pandemic or not, the holidays are a time where intentionality is important - especially as Christians. We want to make sure we are communicating our family values and beliefs to our children. We want to make sure to teach our children the reason for the season, which is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. We want to create traditions and memories with our children that they will look back on and remember with joy as they cultivate memories with their children.   However, as moms, we tend to put unnecessary pressure on ourselves with an unhealthy dose of perfectionism and comparison in the name of intentionality. We easily get caught up in the small details that we place too much importance on, the financial pressures the holidays can bring, and impressing everyone in our extended family for fear of judgment that we completely miss the opportunity to cultivate intention in the first place.   Dr. Laura Foyen, Respectful Parenting Coach, is here to encourage us that simple is better and less is more.   That's right. We can cultivate an intentional, meaningful holiday season with our kiddos by doing LESS. I don't know about you, but this is exactly what I needed to hear.   That's what we're diving into on today's episode of the Mission Motherhood Podcast. Dr. Froyen takes us through exactly how to go from stressed and overwhelmed to focusing on what really matters this holiday season so we can create those memories with our children and teach them those values that are so near and dear to us.   Connect with Dr. Laura Froyen: Instagram: www.instagram.com/laurafroyenphd Facebook: www.facebook.com/laurafroyen Free parenting support group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/balancedparenting Free Three R's Workbook for more intentional living: https://www.laurafroyen.com/rhythm

Remember not everything that people say is meant for you, you have two ears.  Some information can go in one, and straight out the other.   Listen for tips about the POSITIVE SENTIMENT OVERDRIVE   I learned about this from Dr. Laura Froyen's Instagram https://www.laurafroyen.com/podcast   Tip 1:  Set an alarm to text your partner/spouse a quirky positive thing about your kids that day before they get home from work Tip 2:  Use baby pictures to trigger the good feelings and memories.  Tip 3:  Leave a hot wheel car on your desk or by a sink to remind you to choose OVERDRIVE. Zoom it back and forth between people and take turns sharing the good. Tip 4--BONUS--Wear giant prop glasses to practice having rose-colored glasses on.  Be mindful and point out what you love about your life, your kids, your partner.  Everything.    Self-Care: Try a cup of tea in the evening to give yourself an unwind trigger.  You do a lot.  Be kind to yourself.    Play: Play tic-tac-toe.  Who will win if you play best out of 5?     Visit the new website: www.keepcalmmotheron.com   Have an idea? School districts are starting to make plans to reopen - some with sneeze guards between desks; some on reduced schedules to accommodate the amount of space needed for social distancing, while some are going online-only for the Fall semester. How will your child cope with this? Did your child adapt well to online learning when schools closed?  Will they find it relatively easy to see their friends but not be close to them?  There are some children for whom these arrangements work well, but for others parents see big trouble ahead. What are the options?  Even if you've never considered homeschooling as a realistic option in the past, it might now be the tool that gets you through the next few months.  But are you terrified that you don't know everything your child needs to know?  And how could it possibly work for your family? Join me for a conversation with Dr. Laura Froyen, who is considering homeschooling her two children next semester - even though she has a Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies and wrote a dissertation on supporting young children in learning to read, she's nervous that she doesn't know everything she needs to know - so if you're worried about this you're certainly not alone! We look at what we know about how long children actually spend learning in school (the answer is going to shock you!), how you can work AND homeschool, and how you can get confident that you really can support your child's love of learning - even if you know your child will eventually go back to school. [accordion] [accordion-item title="Click here to read the full transcript"] Jen Hi, I'm Jen and I host the Your Parenting Mojo Podcast where I critically examine strategies and tools related to parenting and child development that are grounded in scientific research and principles of respectful parenting. In this series of episodes called Sharing Your Parenting Mojo, we turn the tables and hear from listeners. What have they learned from the show that's helped their parenting? Where are they still struggling? And what tools can we find in the research that will help? We are here with Dr. Laura Froyen today to discuss the topic of homeschooling. She's thinking about whether and how to do it over the next few months. And as we were chatting about it, we figured that some of the things that she's thinking about right now are probably similar to some of the things that other parents are thinking about too. And so we thought, why not just get on a call and discuss them live and share what we're thinking and what we're learning with other people as well. So that's kind of what we're going to do today. So welcome, Laura, do you want to tell us a bit about yourself and your background first? Laura Absolutely. Thanks for having me and agreeing to answer my questions Jen. So so I'm Dr. Laura Froyen and I have my PhD in Human Development and Family Studies with a specialization in couples and family therapy. I am currently a peaceful parenting and respectful relationship coach and course creator, but I started right out of grad school in an academic job. And so I did my dissertation on how family processes influenced the home learning environment and children's early literacy skills. I'm a big believer in delaying, reading, teaching, active reading, teaching until in a developmentally appropriate age. I've always been deeply curious and, you know, interested in the prospect of homeschooling, but then also not sure if I could ever handle doing it. I have a very strong willed personality,...

Quarantine stress hits home for Montanans

Montana Lowdown

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 14, 2020 40:23

As Montana enters its fifth consecutive week of quarantine, many households are feeling the strain of isolation, fear and anxiety. Professionals are warning about increased incidents of domestic violence and sexual assault, while even safe households are experiencing unique stresses related to parenting. In response to these concerns, Montana Free Press is publishing this episode of the weekly Montana Lowdown podcast focused on resources for victims of domestic and sexual violence, as well as parenting tips from childcare experts.   Pandemic Exacerbates Abusive Behavior Echoing concerns shared in national publications, local professionals are reporting that the quarantine is exacerbating abusive behavior.  “Abusers use isolation as a way to maintain power and control. And when we see increased stresses at home, a lot of times that also can be a contributing factor for violence,” says Jenny Eck, executive director of The Friendship Center, a Helena-based nonprofit that provides resources to victims of domestic and sexual violence. Eck tells Lowdown host John S. Adams that abusers can exploit the pandemic by withholding items like hand sanitizer or masks, preventing victims from seeking medical attention or support from friends and family, and withholding insurance information. While there is some relief coming to Montana’s victims of domestic violence — the federal CARES Act package includes $45 million in funding for crisis centers — Kelsen Young, executive director of the Montana Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence warns that “it will probably be another month or two” before the state’s allocation makes its way to program coffers.  Young adds that abuse victims are seeing another novel limit in their ability to find safe harbor, as many hotels that previously opened their doors to victims are now being more strict about filling vacancies. As Young tells Adams, “We are hearing that some hotels are refusing to take people that are [exposed to the virus].” Simultaneously, established shelters are limiting the number of people they take in during the pandemic to minimize the risk of viral transmission. Both Eck and Young note that there are ways for Montanans to help. Eck suggests, “It’s really important that you stay in touch. Try to help [victims] have access to a safe way of communicating.” And for those Montanans who are able to offer financial support, Young says, “Domestic violence shelters would be a great place” to donate.   Parenting In A Pandemic Emotionally healthy households are facing their own stresses, with many parents having to balance a dearth of childcare options with professional obligations or new fears about lost wages. Lowdown producer Alex McKenzie, a new parent to a 7-month-old child, interviewed Wisconsin-based Dr. Laura Froyen, whose work focuses on human development and family studies, and Portland, Oregon-based Tracey Biebel, a licensed clinical social worker and podcaster whose work is focused on “practical parenting and practical living.” One theme repeated throughout both interviews is that there is no universal approach to parenting under quarantine. While some parents are able to take advantage of the recently passed Families First Coronavirus Response Act, which offers expanded family or paid medical leave for certain situations, many other parents are left to balance expert advice on social distancing measures with the realities of their childcare needs. Asked about the prudence of designating a single person, like a grandparent or other relative, to provide care for a young child during the pandemic, Froyen suggested making an “exclusivity arrangement” in which the childcare provider will not be taking care of any other children, and will otherwise refrain from interaction with the outside world. “You are going to socially isolate, together,” Froyen says. For older children, Biebel suggests a more conservative approach. While she acknowledges that different scenarios may work better for individual families, she cautions that allowing a teenager to have exclusive social interactions with a friend may create a slippery slope. “If you allow one friend, then they’re like, ‘Well, what about the other friend?” She says the issues with teenagers is rooted in a lack of critical thinking skills: “The brain development just isn’t there yet,” she says Froyen and Biebel also weigh in on topics including screen time, the importance of structure during quarantine, and how to communicate about the pandemic to small children without triggering anxiety. Another shared view between Froyen and Biebel involves lowered parental expectations during the pandemic. Froyen suggests that parents offer themselves “lots of grace and compassion, room to make mistakes, and to repair them.” Biebel advises parents to “just sit in it and let it pass, because it will.”   Resources: Montana Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence https://mcadsv.com/   National Domestic Violence Hotline 1-800-799-7233   National Sexual Assault Hotline 1-800-656-4673   The Friendship Center https://www.thefriendshipcenter.org/ 406-442-6800

“How much can there really be to learn about storytelling?” I thought when I started on this mini-series. It turns out that there’s actually quite a lot to learn, and that family storytelling can be a particularly useful tool for parents.  We’re all trying to figure out how to transmit our values to our children, and storytelling can be quite an effective way of doing this.  Further, storytelling can be a really valuable way to support children in overcoming traumatic experiences.  In this episode we dig into the research on the benefits of family storytelling and look at how to do it. Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive

We’ve done a couple of episodes on reading by now; episode 3 (which seems so long ago!) asked whether you might have missed the boat on teaching your toddler to read (https://yourparentingmojo.com/003-your-toddler-isnt-reading-yet-neither-is-mine/) .  Of course, we know that you’ve only missed the boat on that if you think that sitting your child in front of a video so they can recite the words they see without really understanding them counts as “reading.” Much more recently in episode 48 we talked with Dr. Laura Froyen about the benefits of shared reading (https://yourparentingmojo.com/reading/) with your child and how to do that according to best practices from the research literature. Those of you who subscribe to my newsletter will recall that I’ve been working on an episode on storytelling for months now.  Part of the reason it’s taking so long is that books on storytelling technique say to use original stories wherever possible because the language in them is so much richer, but if you’ve ever read something like an original fairytale you know they can be pretty gory, and even the most harmless ones actually contain some pretty adult themes if you read between the lines. So I wanted to know: what do children really learn from stories?  How do they figure out that we want them to learn morals from stories but not that animal characters walk on two legs and wear clothes?  How do they generalize that knowledge to the real world?  And are there specific types of books that promote learning? Join me in a conversation with Dr. Deena Weisberg of The University of Pennsylvania as she helps us to help our children learn through reading! Before we start on today’s episode, I just wanted to take a minute to let you know that as part of my research for this episode on what children learn through reading fictional books, I ended up looking at a lot of different kinds of books for children aged roughly between toddlerhood and elementary school, and I compiled them into a list of more than 100 books that you can use to support your children’s learning on a host of subjects related to math, science, empathy, being persistent in the face of failure,...

Description This is our monthly special episode where I co-host the show with another colleague. For now, I have a Mystery Seat for each month and I invite passionate coaches or parent educators to host the show with me. This should be fun. For the monthly special episodes the show has a different format. We have 4 segments. Examples from Our Home What’s Up with You? Answering listener parenting questions Favorite Finds ---------------- In the first segment I tell a story that happens very commonly in many households. My daughter one morning before going to school stated that she didn’t have shoes. How did I answer? Did I avoid power struggles successfully, was I able to listen and validate? Listen to find out. The same day I received a call from a client who said that his son woke up and said, “I do not want to go to school…” Sound familiar? Laura has two daughters: a 2,5 year old one and a 5 year old one. She shares a sibling rivalry story.   For this month Laura Froyen, PhD takes the mystery seat.   About My Co-host Questions we received this month: A mom is frustrated with food related issue. She has strong triggers around wasting food. How to handle a situation where a child (3.5) asks for a specific food, is given the food, and then doesn’t eat it? A single mom who works from home has a hard time managing her time and her toddler.   Resources and links: Laura’s website Laura’s Facebook page Anna’s book recommendation. Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive

Waaaay back in Episode 3 (https://yourparentingmojo.com/003-your-toddler-isnt-reading-yet-neither-is-mine/) , we wondered whether we had missed the boat on teaching our babies to read (didn’t you teach your baby how to read?).  We eventually decided that we hadn’t, but given that many parents have a goal of instilling a love of reading into their children, what’s the best way to go about doing that?  And what if your child is the kind who wriggles out of your lap at the mere sight of a book? Our second-ever repeat guest, Dr. Laura Froyen, helps us to delve into the research on this topic.  We conclude by talking through some of the things parents can do to promote a love of reading, because it turns out it’s not as intuitive as one might think!   Dr. Laura has consolidated the most important of these suggestions into a FREE infographic that you can put up on the fridge.  Get your copy – free! – by clicking here (http://www.laurafroyen.com/respectful-reading/) .   References Bus, A.G. Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive

Isn’t it kind of a “well, duh?” that parenting affects child development?  But do we know how?  We know it’s not good to have really big fights in front of the kids, but do spousal quarrels screw them up too?  Are there really links between a family’s emotional expressiveness and the child’s later academic performance?  How does the marital relationship affect parenting, and how does parenting affect the marital relationship? Today we talk with Dr. Laura Froyen, who has a Ph.D in Human Development and Family Studies and seems almost as obsessed with research on child development issues as I am.  You can find much more about her work at www.laurafroyen.com (http://www.laurafroyen.com) .
