How does film and TV make time travel real? Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode take a quantum leap into the world of time travel and time loops on screen, from Back To The Future to Groundhog Day. Mark speaks to theoretical physicist Sean Carroll about how movies like Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and Interstellar have handled the science of time travel - and whether it really is just the stuff of fantasy. And he talks to Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Knives Out director Rian Johnson about the dramatic allure of playing with time, and about Rian's 2012 film Looper, which starred Bruce Willis as a criminal sent back to the past to be eliminated by his younger self. Meanwhile, Ellen explores a sub-genre less concerned with mechanics and physics, and more with emotion and moral dilemmas - the time loop story. She speaks to Black Doves screenwriter Joe Barton about his time loop TV series The Lazarus Project. And film critic Anne Billson runs her through some examples of the genre she finds most - and least - captivating, from Palm Springs to About Time.Produced by Jane Long A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4

Here's the format of the show: The Best Thing I Saw on TV Last Month – Alex, Bill, & Josh talk about a show/episode/event they liked from the last month including Max's Creature Commandos, Disney Plus's Skeleton Crew & What If, and Netflix's No Good Deed. It's all the fours with episode 444 of the Geektown Radio podcast as Darryl From Hollywood North News joins Dave to chat about all the latest TV, film and games news & reviews! As always Darryl brings an interesting mix of mainstream and slightly more obscure film and TV reviews along with him! Firstly he kicks off with the movie 'Werewolves Within', which is available now on demand, and follows that with his review of the recently released Prime Video series 'Cross'. He has also picked up the first season of Netflix dramedy 'The Lincoln Lawyer', and moves on to a new legal drama which has recently dropped onto Sky Witness and NOW, 'Matlock'. Meanwhile, Dave reviews the new Netflix (and surprisingly festive!) thriller from the brilliant Joe Barton, 'Black Doves' starring Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw, along with the really fun new Disney+ series 'Star Wars: Skeleton Crew'. He also chats about what he got up to at the recent MCM Comic Con Birmingham.Over in the news updates, we have one cancellation and a surprising number of renewals for the time of year, including the Paramount hiring 'The Agency' again, more adult adventures on Disney+ from Jilly Cooper, and more murdering from the ubiquitous Ella Purnell. We also have news on a 'Scrubs' revival, whether another spin-off from 'The Rookie' is a good idea, the showrunners from ‘Grey's Anatomy' doing English period drama, and lots more! We were delighted to be joined in the studio this week by friend of the pod and Black Doves creator Joe Barton, who heroically braved Euston traffic and his post-premiere hangover to make a triumphant return to the podcast, sitting in with us this week as we chatted everything from animation to comedy and the creative powers of the ‘Merrineum'. Elsewhere, we dabble in Tim Miller's new video game inspired Prime animation Secret Level, and Netflix's adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez's 100 Years Of Solitude.
As promised, it's a double dose of Soundtracking to start your week following our episode on Black Doves with Keira Knightley and Joe Barton. Now it's the turn of Zoe Saldaña, star of another Netflix vehicle, Emilia Pérez. Written and directed by Jacques Audiard, the film tells the story of a feared cartel leader who enlists a lawyer to help her disappear and achieve her dream of transitioning into a woman. Its all singing, all dancing, and quite unlike anything you're likely to have seen - with original songs written by Camille and a score provided by Clément Ducol.
Keira Knightly and Joe Barton join Edith to discuss Joe's thrilling take on the espionage genre for Netflix, Black Doves. Keira stars (alongside Ben Wishaw's assassin, Sam) as Helen, the wife of a senior politician, who exploits her relationship with her husband to leak state secrets to a mysterious organisation call the Black Doves. As well as some great needle-drops, Black Doves is scored by friend of the show, Martin Phipps

It's a BUMPER show this week so you might want to block out a good chunk of time for this one (sorry!). Plus we get our kaiju on with Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters on Apple TV+ and find a shitload of cocaine on a beach with Daisy Haggard and Patterson Joseph in Boat Story on the BBC.

The news of Texas covered today includes:Our Lone Star story of the day: State Rep. Jake Ellzey defeats Susan Wright in runoff special election for Texas' 6th Congressional District. Only about 2,500 votes separate them. Our Lone Star story of the day is sponsored by Allied Compliance Services providing the best service in DOT, business and personal drug and alcohol testing since 1995.Anti-Wimp update.Feds have been releasing WuFlu positive illegal aliens into Texas communities and more in the border news stack.I go more with Amber Athey's headline “Simone Biles is a quitter” than with Dan McLaughlin's “Defend Simone Biles, but Don't Glorify Quitting” though both are spot on. What a let down from this formerly admired and praised Texan.Lt. Gov. puts together select committee on college sports in Texas in the wake of the latest defection from the Big XII. This week, Kevin chats with Joe Barton, one of the UK's most sought-after screenwriters, and the creator and writer of smash-hit TV series, Giri/Haji. Joe talks Kevin through his fascinating process when it comes to creation, his journey as a screenwriter, and the effects of having created such a powerful and resonant worldwide success. KEY TAKEAWAYS All writers work in different ways. The more prolific and productive tend to embrace an environment that provides stimulation and inspiration, and most importantly, a place in which we can securely express ourselves. Directors and front-of-camera talent are often celebrated far more than writers, with whom ideas originate. It's a trend that's slowly changing, with the advent of name writers, but it's a situation that many writers must accept at the outset. When creating an idea, the script itself is equally as important as the home in which the project will eventually find itself. Each production house serves a different purpose. Stories, whether told through drama or even dance, work best when they connect on an emotional level. Technical brilliance has its place, but stories are far more effective when they make people feel.
