Handicapping of Kentucky Derby 2025 qualifiers this weekend and a tribute to the late San Diego columnist Bryce Miller take center stage on the Ron Flatter Racing Pod. Del Mar president Joe Harper offers a tribute to Miller, whose turf writing took him from the seaside track to Triple Crown races to Breeders' Cups. Colleagues reminisce about a newspaper career that took Miller from his native Iowa to USA Today to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Former sports editor Jay Posner and podcast co-host and Los Angeles Times contributor John Cherwa share stories about their working with Miller. Highlights of a 2022 interview with Miller will be replayed, including an infamous story about an Iowa man whose embarrassment about something he left in his car led him to a $2.2 million lottery win. Paddock Prince handicapper David Levitch focuses on the Florida Derby and the Arkansas Derby, this weekend's Grade 1 races that are automatic qualifiers for Churchill Downs in May. He also has tips for the Kentucky Oaks (G1) preps at Gulfstream Park and Oaklawn. The Ron Flatter Racing Pod via Horse Racing Nation is available via free subscription from Apple, Firefox, iHeart and Spotify as well as HorseRacingNation.com.

This week, our holiday episode is about an obscure little offbeat Christmas film that means a lot to us personally, A Midwinter's Tale - or In the Bleak Midwinter, if you're outside the US. Kenneth Branagh wrote and directed (but uncharacteristically, did not act in) this film about Joe Harper, an out-of-work actor who decides that an independent Christmas production of Hamlet is just the thing to somehow pull him out of his depression and get back on track. Fortunately, the magic of Shakespeare and live performance do come around in the end to remind Joe what life is all about. We discuss the unique relationships formed when working in theater (especially broke indie theater), the high emotions that occur when a group of actors are trapped together for long periods of time, how rehearsal and character work often beget psychological introspection, and this film's place as an unsung Christmas classic that harkens back to better known holiday fare like It's A Wonderful Life. This episode is for the entertainers--the people who are often out there working through the holidays, often for little more than the love of performing, creating family when they can't be with their own. Come tread the boards with us!

Huckleberry Finn By Mark Twain词汇提示1.widow 寡妇原文CHAPTER ONE: Huck in troubleYou don't know about me if you haven't read a book called The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.Mr. Mark Twain wrote the book and most of it is true.In that book, robbers stole some money and hid it in a very secret place in the woods. But Tom Sawyer and I found it, and after that we were rich.We got six thousand dollars each- all gold.In those days, I never had a home or went to school like Tom and all the other boys in St Petersburg.Pop was always drunk, and he moved around a lot, so he wasn't a very good father. But it didn't matter to me.I slept in the streets or in the woods, and I could do what I wanted, when I wanted. It was a fine life. When we got all that money, Tom and I were famous for a while.Judge Thatcher, who was an important man in our town, kept my money in the bank for me.And the Widow Douglas took me to live in her house and said I could be her son.She was very nice and kind, but it was a hard life because I had to wear new clothes and be good all the time.In the end, I put on my old clothes and ran away. But Tom came after me and said that I had to go back, but that I could be in his gang of robbers. So, I went back, and the widow cried and I had to put on those new clothes again.I didn't like it at all.Her sister, Miss Watson, lived there too.She was always saying, 'Don't put your feet there, Huckleberry,' and 'Don't do that, Huckleberry.'It was terrible. When I went up to bed that night, I sat down in a chair by the window.I sat there a good long time, and I was really unhappy. But just after midnight I heard 'mee-yow! mee- yow!' outside.Very softly, I answered, 'mee-yow! mee- yow!'Quietly, I put out the light and got out through the window. In the trees, Tom Sawyer was waiting for me.We went through the trees to the end of the widow's garden.Soon we were on top of a hill on the other side of the house.Below us we could see the river and the town. One or two lights were still on, but everything was quiet. We went down the hill and found Joe Harper, Ben Rogers and two or three more of the boys. Then Tom took us down the river byThen Tom took us down the river by boat to a secret place, which was a cave deep in the side of a hill. When we got there, tom told us all his plan.'Now we'll have this gang of robbers,' he said, 'and we'll call it Tom sawyer's Gang. If somebody hurts one of us, the others will kill him and his family. And if a boy from the gang tells other people our secrets, we'll kill him and his family too. 'We all thought this was wonderful, and we wrote our names in blood from our fingers. Then Ben Rogers said, 'Now, what's the gang going to do?''Nothing,' replied Tom.'Just rob and kill. We stop people on the road, and we kill them, and take their money and things. But we can keep a few of the people, and then their friends can pay money to get them back. That's what they do in the stories in books.'But Ben wasn't happy. 'What about women? 'he asked. 'Do we kill them, too?''Oh, no,' Tom answered.'We're very nice to them, and they all love us, and they don't want to go home.''Then the cave will be full of women, and people waiting, and we'll have to watch them all night...''We'll all go home now,' Tom said, 'and we'll meet next week, and we'll kill somebody and rob somebody.'Ben wanted to begin on Sunday, but the others said no.It was bad to kill and rob on a Sunday. My clothes were very dirty and I was very tired when I got back.Of course, the next morning Miss Watson was angry with me because of my dirty clothes, but the widow just looked unhappy.Soon after that, we stopped playing robbers, because we never rob people, and we never kill them.Time went on, and winter came.I went to school most of the time, and I was learning to read and write a little. It wasn't too bad.And the widow was pleased with me.Ms. Watson had a slave, an old man called Jim, and he and I were good friends.I often sat talking to Jim, but I still didn't like living in a house and sleeping in a bad. Then one morning, there was some new snow on the ground, and outside the back garden, I could see footprints in the snow.I went out to look at them more carefully. They were pop's footprints.A minute later, I was running down the hill to judge Thatcher's house. When he opened the door, I cried, 'sir, I want you to take all my money. I want to give it to you'.He looked surprised.'Why? What's the matter? ''Please, sir. Take it. Don't ask me why. 'In the end, he said, 'Well, you can sell it to me then. 'And he gave me a dollar and I wrote my name on a piece of paper for him. That night when I went up to my room, Pop was sitting there, waiting for me!I saw that the window was open, so that was how he got in. He was almost fifty and he looked old.His hair was long and dirty and his face was a terrible white color. His clothes were old and dirty, too, and two of his toes were coming through his shoe.He looked at me all over for a long time, and then he said, 'Well, just look at those clean, tidy clothes! And they say you can read and write now. Who said you could go to school?''The widow...' I began.'Oh, she did, did she? Well, you can forget about school. I can't read and your mother couldn't read; no one in our family could read before they died, so who do you think you are? Go on, take that book and read to me!'I began to read, but he hit the book and it flew out of my hand, across the room. Then he shouted, 'They say you're rich - how's that?''It isn't true!''You give me that money! I want it. Get it for me tomorrow!''I haven't got any money. Ask Judge Thatcher. He'll tell you. I haven't got any money.''Well, give me what you've got in your pocket now. Come on, give it to me!''I've only got a dollar, and I want that to...''Give it to me, do you hear?'He took it, and then he said he was going out to get a drink. When he was outside the window, he put his head back in and shouted, 'And stop going to that school, or you know what you'll get!'The next day he was drunk, and he went to Judge Thatcher to get my money. The judge wouldn't give it to him.But Pop didn't stop trying and every few days I got two or three dollars from the judge to stop Pop from hitting me.But when Pop had money, he got drunk again and made trouble in town.He was always coming to the widow's house, and she got angry and told him to stay away. Then Pop got really angry and one day he caught me and took me a long way up the river in a boat.I had to stay with him in a hut in the woods and I couldn't go out by myself. He watched me all the time. The widow sent a man to find me and bring me home, but Pop went after him with a gun, and the man ran away.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain词汇提示1.sheriff 警长2.jail 监狱3.pirate 海盗4.raft 木筏5.funeral 葬礼原文Chapter four:Jackson's IslandThe next day everyone knew about poor Dr Robinson. The sheriff found Muff Potter's knife near the body of the doctor. He put Muff in St Petersburg's small jail.Tom and Huck looked at each other."We saw Injun Joe kill the doctor," said Torn, "Muff didn't kill him. Poor Muff!""I know," said Huck, "But we mustn't say anything. Remember, Injun Joe is dangerous - very dangerous.I'm sorry for Muff Potter, too."The two boys were afraid."We must keep this secret," said Tom sadly.Tom could not forget. At night he had bad dreams about Injun Joe and Muff Potter. He kept the terrible secret but he was very unhappy.Aunt Polly was worried about him.She gave him a lot of different medicines. But Tom did not feel better. He was unhappy at school too.Becky Thatcher didn't talk to him anymore."No one loves me," thought Tom, "What a horrible life!"It was now summer and there was no more school.Tom and his friend Joe Harper went to sit by the Mississippi River. They fished, talked and looked at the boats. One day Tom said, "Let's go do something exciting!""OK!" said Joe, "But where can we go and what can we do?""Let's run away! We can go and live on Jackson's Island. We can be pirates. A pirate's life is exciting," said Tom.Jackson's Island was a small island in the Mississippi River. It was about three miles south of St Petersburg. No one lived on the island."Huckleberry Finn can come with us too," said Tom, "Remember, Joe, don't you're your mother, father or anyone about our adventure. Go home and bring some food. We'll meet here at midnight."Tom and Joe were excited. At midnight the three boys met on the river.Tom brought some meat to eat.Joe brought some bread and Huck brought a frying pan. They found a small raft and they went down the river to Jackson's Island. When they arrived on the island, they made a fire and cooked some meat."This is fun!" said Joe."We're free and we can do everything we want!" said Tom."What do pirates do?" asked Huck."They go on ships and take the money. Then they go to an island and hide it in a secret place," said Tom.The three boys were happy and slept under the stars. The next morning, they went swimming in the river. Then they went fishing. They cooked the fish on the fire and ate it.It was delicious. After breakfast they walked around the island and went swimming again. In the afternoon they sat around the fire and ate some meat.Suddenly Tom said, "Can you hear a strange noise? Listen!""What is it?" asked Joe."Let's go and see," said Huck. They ran to the river. They saw a steamboat and a lot of small boats near it."Every boat from St Petersburg is out on the river," said Joe, "What's happening?""They're looking for a dead body," said Huck, "The same thing happened last summer when Bill Turner fell into the river and drowned."The three boys felt like heroes and laughed."The people of St Petersburg are looking for us. They're talking about us. We're famous!" said Tom happily. This was an exciting adventure for Tom, Huck and Joe! They felt like real pirates on Jackson's island. The boats and the steamboat went away. The boys went fishing again and had fish for dinner. Then they slept under the stars. But Tom could not sleep. The next morning, he wasn't there."Where's Tom?" asked Joe. "I don't know," said Huck. After a few minutes Huck said, "Look! Tom's swimming in the river. He's coming to the island."Tom told them his story."Last night I couldn't sleep. I thought about Aunt Polly. So I went home but no one saw me. I saw Aunt Polly and your mother, Joe. Poor Aunt Polly cried a lot. And your mother was very sad too. Everyone thinks we're dead. I heard some interesting things.""What did you hear?" asked Huck."Well, there will be a funeral for us on Sunday at the church," said Tom.Huck andJoe looked at him with big eyes. "And now I have a great idea. Listen - "Tom told Huck and Joe his great idea. They liked it and laughed.Sunday was the day of the funeral. There were no happy faces in St Petersburg.Everyone in the village was in the small church.Aunt Polly, Sid, Mary and Joe Harper's family were all dressed in black. The Reverend said many kind words about the three boys. The boys' families cried and cried.Becky Thatcher cried.Everyone cried a lot.Suddenly there was a noise at the church door. The Reverend looked up and stopped speaking.Everyone in the church turned around and looked.Their mouths opened. The three dead boys slowly walked into the church.Tom was first, then Joe and then Huck. There was great silence for a moment. Then Aunt Polly, Mary and Joe's mother ran to the boys. They kissed Tom and Joe.Aunt Polly cried and then she laughed. Poor Huck did not know what to do.No one kissed him.He started moving away but Tom stopped him."Aunt Polly, it's not right. Somebody must be happy to see Huck," said Tom. "Oh, you're right Tom!" cried Aunt Polly and she kissed Huck.Tom was very proud of his great idea. Then the Reverend said, "Let us sing and be happy!"Everybody sang and laughed. It was a very happy day.

Having worked at Kellogg's for seven years, Joe Harper looks after the e-commerce function of the company across all of Europe. He previously held roles across social content creation and many more in sport betting, moving from sports to cereal and from digital to e-commerce. Joe's Shiny New Object may not be "shiny" or "new" to some but it's certainly relevant in his business space: user generated content (UGC). Joe believes that big companies still haven't unpacked the full potential of using UGC especially on social channels. The relatability of user content and its relevance for social media audiences helps it have a bigger impact than any glossy campaign created by a brand or their agency. Listen to Joe talk about harnessing the power of UGC, as well as his top marketing tips and advice for students, in this latest episode of the podcast.

TIFFANNIE DE BARTOLO launches SORROW  SAN FRANCISCO – It’s never too late to become who we’re meant to be, or to summon the courage to develop into the person whom we desire to be. Indie record label owner and author Tiffanie DeBartolo’s newest novel, “Sorrow,” (Oct. 20, Woodhall Press) expertly examines this idea through the lenses of art, music and love. Inspired in part by the music of The National, the book is both a humorous and emotional assessment of the millennial generation. Sorrow is a poignant story about friendship and love, art and music, and how these pursuits can save us from ourselves. Joe Harper has backpedalled throughout his life. A once-promising guitar prodigy, he's been living without direction since abandoning his musical dreams. now into this thirties, having retreated from every opportunity he's had to level up, he has lost his family, his best friend, and his own self-respect. But Joe finds an unlikely path to redemption when he starts working as a carpenter for the bohemian conceptual artist October Danko. The job returns him to his hometown, loaded with bittersweet reminders of his former life, in the shadows of his beloved redwood trees. Sorrow is a moving novel that explores masculinity and suspended adolescence, all the while begging the questions: Can courage be learned? And is it ever too late to follow your heart?   SHOW NOTES: Writes4Women www.writes4women.com Facebook @writes4women Twitter / Instagram @w4wpodcast W4W Patreon https://www.writes4women.com/support-us-on-patreon Tiffanie de Bartolo "Sorrow" Web - https://www.tiffaniedebartolo.com Facebook @TiffanieDeBartoloAuthor  Twitter @TiffanieD Insta @tiffaniedebartolo Pamela Cook www.pamelacook.com.au Facebook @pamelacookauthor Twitter @PamelaCookAU Instagram @pamelacookwrites Listen Up Podcasting (Kel Butler) www.listenuppodcasting.com.au Facebook @kelbutler / @listenuppodcasting Twitter @KelB   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The 9iar Chronicles - Season not the ten 1974/75   Two Cups - but no Ten-in-a-Row League Position – 3rd - finishing 11pts behind Rangers who won the League and 4pts behind Hibernian League Cup – Winners Scottish Cup – Winners Drybrough Cup - Winners European Cup - First Round   Celtic were to miss out on a world record of ten consecutive League championships this season and had to be content with the two domestic cups and the Drybrough Cup in it's last year. This season saw the retirement of Billy McNeill and the departure on free transfers at the end of the season of the last true veterans of the golden age with the release of Jimmy Johnstone and Jim Brogan. The only remaining Lisbon Lion at the end of the season was Bobby Lennox.   Celtic did not travel abroad for any pre-season games this season but used the Drybrough Cup and domestic friendlies to sort the team out. There was an embarrassing one-off trip to West Germany to play Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen which ended in the joint highest defeat under Jock Stein so far. Interest in the Drybrough Cup was faintly raised when the final threw Rangers and Celtic together with the game ending in a draw and Celtic winning the rights to the Cup 4-2 on penalties. This was the last season this Cup would be played though it would return in 1979. The performances were somewhat jaded and lacking in enthusiasm one normally expected from a Celtic team but this was put down to a short inter-season lay-off period with the World Cup and Scotland's involvement in that also taking place during the shut down. Added to this would be that Danny McGrain had returned from the World Cup having been diagnosed diabetic.   The League Cup saw Celtic in Group 4 with Motherwell, Dundee Utd and Ayr Utd. The format had been changed with one team qualifying from each group for the Quarter finals and the rather silly offside rule used in the Drybrough - only being offside beyond the 18 yard box - persisted with even though it was disliked by all. In the second game Celtic received a shock losing to Ayr Utd. The jaded performances were for real and Jock Stein found himself with three immediate problems :- a goalkeeping crisis, a vulnerable defense and the strike force misfiring. These all needed to be addressed. None could be addressed with immediate effect. Celtic, however, duly put the results together to qualify for the quarter finals with a game in hand in the Group Satge and were drawn against Hamilton Academicals managed by ex-Celt Eric Smith. A 2-0 win at home followed by a 4-2 away win saw them comfortably through to face Airdrie in the semi final. This was a turgid affair settled by a single goal from Stevie Murray in the second half. Hibernian had also made it through all the way and the final was a classic Celtic performance with Dixie Deans scoring a hatrick as well as Joe Harper also getting a hatrick and ending on the losing side.   That was one Cup in the bag done and dusted by the end of October. Already Celtic had seen George Connelly walk out and state that he was quitting football. He did relent and returned to train and eventually win a starting place again in November and December. But the assessment of the team had seen Jimmy Quinn, Vic Davidson, Jimmy Bone and Andy Lynch all told that they could leave on frees. Also by this time Celtic found themselves out of the European Cup at the first hurdle. A 1-1 draw at home achieved after the sending off of an Olympiakos player was not enough and in the flare and smoke of the Athens game Celtic went down 2-0.Olympiakos were an unfancied side and they duly made their own exit at the next round. Was this an indication of European fragility? The side that had won the big cup, made the semi final twice and had been described as European attack masters looked woefully out of sorts.   What happened in the League to lose the tenth successive title is really a continuation of the faults that had been seen at the start of the season being cruelly exposed in the second half in the New Year. By that point Ronnie Glavin had been signed after much beating around the fee from Partick Thistle. At the age of 23 he had been the Jags captain and leading player as well as a Scotland U-23 cap. Signed in November for a club record of £80,000, Glavin had been a target for a number of clubs and Partick Thistle, under manager and ex-Celt Bertie Auld were looking to cash in. Glavin arrived to add extra firepower and to help Dalglish who was turning out to be easily the most competent and rounded player in Scotland. After a successful scoring debut he found it not as easy as first thought to fit into the team and in January he found himself dropped as Stein wrestled to find a winning formula again.   The catalyst that started to bring the house tumbling down was the 3-0 loss to Rangers at Ibrox in January. Celtic did not play too badly but there were too many first team players that failed to hit form and this was worrying. With a further 4 points dropped in the next five games which included dispiriting draws away to Arbroath and at home to Dumbarton. With the goalkeeping crisis much in evidence Peter Latchford was recruited from West Bromwich Albion. Latchford came up and played in a Friendly and in wizard time he was duly signed on an initial loan deal and saw out the rest of the season as first choice keeper. At times the support and Jock Stein must have thought what they had taken on as Latchford was prone to the occasional howler and soft goal. But he would develop substantially from this his first season at Celtic. Despite trying everything the crisis could not be averted and Celtic would drop a further 13 points in 10 games to finish third behind Rangers and Hibernian. Needless to say this was a shock to the supporters who had come to see over the last 10 years the Championship as a permanent feature at Celtic Park and the League programme kicking off each season with the raising of a new Championship flag.   The reality was that the flow of players coming through had dried up. Though Dalglish was without doubt the most accomplished footballer in Scotland he could not do it all by himself. The midfield lacked a David Hay type player. George Connelly, whilst a gifted sweeper and defender as well as having exquisite skill, was now emotionally fragile. McNeill was reaching the end of his career as too was Jim Brogan. Add to that a lack of bite upfront, despite Paul Wilson having his best season ever, it was more a collective malaise within the strike force that saw them missing chances and playing underpar when before they had been the Green Machine.   The retrieval of the season came with the Scottish Cup winning 3-1 against Airdrie who were in their first Cup Final since 1928. By this point the League had already been lost so it was with absolute faith that Jock Stein sent them out onto the Hampden pitch knowing that they would return with the cup. At the end of that game Billy McNeill announced his retirement.   If the club felt low at having to bear the loss of the tenth successive League title then they could console themselves with two trophies at least. Things could not get worse. Could they?   Enjoy…

Modern Britain is presenting brands and marketers with more challenges than ever before. Staggering social media use and overexposure to advertising has taught us to be cynical - and it’s having a major impact on campaign strategy and content creation. But how do you charm a nation of cynics? In the pilot episode of Social Minds, the UK’s first social media marketing podcast by Social Chain, we’re joined by Kellogg’s UK & Ireland social lead, Joe Harper. In this, we ask whether or not consumer cynicism is a behaviour we can unlearn, and Joe reveals how FMCG brands such as Kellogg’s are working to educate a woke generation and earn the elusive trust of the UK consumer.

[2:02] This week’s episode is the audio portion of a webinar Marc did with Joe Harper, the Executive Director of the Texas State Small Business Development Center. This webinar was given for the CareerPivot community membership site on how to utilize your Small Business Development Center, the hidden gem in almost every community. [3:16] Marc introduces Joe Harper who directs the webinar. [3:45] Joe gives the background of the Small Business Development Centers. There are over 1,100 centers in 64 states and U.S. territories starting in the early 1980s. There are 4,000 advisers in their team, nationwide. [4:45] The SBD program provides technical assistance in the form of mentorship and training to businesses from the idea stage to the high-growth stage. Most of the focus is on businesses in the idea stage, from concept to credit. [6:48] An adviser helps you design a strategy for executing the launch of your business, and the expansion and long-term growth of your business, up to a plan for exiting the business at the right time. Joe once tried to give his business to his son. His son declined the opportunity. [8:03] Joe explains the mission and goals of the SBDCs. They track numbers of jobs they help create, help save and expand, the number of business they help create, and capital infusion. In the Austin area, their capital impact is about $75 million, annually. [9:15] Joe talks about the SBDC’s role in matching a business’s financial projections and their business plan. There is planning where the money will come from, how you will use it, and how you will repay it. Sources for capital are discussed. Different programs exist for businesses at different stages. [11:52] Joe introduces the program of the lean canvas or the nine building blocks of the business model developed by Dr. Osterwalder to predict accurately the success of your business plan and help you develop your pro forma or financial projections. Managing the cash is key. [15:16] SBDC advisers look at three things in terms of a business’s ability to grow: 1. Do they have a willingness to grow? 2. Do they have experience in what growth looks like? 3. Do they have the capacity to grow internally and externally? [16:24] The transition into a high-growth company usually comes with the realization that there will be awkward decisions about changing staff. [18:01] In an online business, your digital footprint is your business. SBDC advisers spend a lot of time working with business owners on their social media strategy, websites, and tools to develop online customer relationships and understanding what customer needs and expectations are going to be. What is their value proposition? [20:20] How do you find your nearest Small Business Development Center? Look at ASDBC.org. Find your lead center. They will direct you to your local field center. The local centers are also listed on the SBA.gov website. Different field centers will have different areas of technology or business expertise. One SBCD can refer you to another. [22:46] The whole focus is on what’s best for the client. [22:58] The businesses SBDC helps are for profit. Nonprofits can get help from SCORE. [23:44] A new client of the SBDC is first advised about their business idea. There is help for every level, from ideation to exit. Some SBDCs have certified business valuators. [28:10] Joe talks about taxes and regulations that are being pulled off the books. The new tax law allows certain assets to be expensed in the first year. Caution: an expense is not a depreciation. Joe talks about tax mitigation vs. growth and value. [32:37] What about positioning yourself as a business as an author? It is difficult to measure the economic return on the taxpayer investment in an author or other one-person small businesses. [30:42] Mark tells how he has researched optimum job titles through Google. Make it a relevant title for the future, not for today, or for the past. Don’t say MSDOS programmer. They discuss Marc’s episode with Alexander Buschek and Marc’s pivots that led to CareerPivot.com. [4:59] Q1: How do you break out of a job search rut?I’ve been on the job hunt for more than a year. I felt like I’ve tried everything with various resume formats, networking, industry associations, cold-calling and Toastmasters and I’ve had three final interviews with no offers. Would love your input, James from Akron. [5:37] A1: Mark answers this question. The listener’s name is not a traditional American name. There may be bias involved. Mark also knows this listener never followed up after his interviews. Mark coaches people always to follow up with a thank you. Even send a card. Mark gives an example. [8:43] Marc says, "be a polite pest." [8:59] Marc shares an example of one client who was put through eight hours of interviewing without a lunch break and then was told two of the interviewers thought he couldn’t keep up. The interviewer liked him, though, and put him in line for a different position. If you don’t ask, no one will tell you. [10:48] Give gift cards also to ones who give you referrals. You want to be memorable. [11:10] Q2: I’m under a lot of stress at work. At the same time, I’m looking for a new job and not getting anywhere. I’m thinking of quitting, getting healthy, and striking out on my job search. What do you think? Do you have any suggestions? [11:30] A2: This client came to Marc a year-and-a-half ago. She was seriously stressed and threatening to bring charges against her boss for bullying. Marc suggested she go on disability leave. With a psychiatrist, she worked for three months on her mental health. [12:14] When she came back, she was in a lot better shape than when she left. She also had learned what her boss’s triggering points were. She had learned methods for releasing her own stress and she took breaks to exercise. She’s getting close to finding that next job. [13:20] Marc has had a couple of different client’s who’ve been able to go out on Disability and really focus on their health while maintaining their insurance benefits. Mark stresses getting the support of HR, especially if they know your manager has a tendency to drive people out because of his ways. [14:44] Mark tells of a situation with the largest law office in the world, that he left because of horrific stress. Tell your spouse before you leave, though. [18:23] Q3: I worked for a family business for so many years. So many jobs want references that aren’t family members. How do I reconcile no having references? [21:12] A3: Mark gives examples of ways to leverage your management experience and good people for references you have had contact with over the years for the work you have done in a family business. [23:37] Q4: I’m working on updating my LinkedIn profile and looking at the profiles of others who have jobs like mine. They all look so different. I’m confused on how to go about updating my LinkedIn profile. Can you give me some hints or guidelines? [23:59] A4: There is no right way to write a LinkedIn profile. Think first, “What message do I want to deliver?” Do you want the kind of job you have now, or are you looking for something very different? Think about your hero image, your backdrop image, and your current job title, as well as of jobs you have had in the past. [27:42] Marc discusses Alexander Buschek and how he moved in media towards digital transformation. Lean toward the career you want. Marc talks about one of the members of his online community and how he’s pruning his old connections and growing new ones in his preferred field. [30:42] Mark tells how he has researched optimum job titles through Google. Make it a relevant title for the future, not for today, or for the past. Don’t say MSDOS programmer. [32:14] Mark explains a hack to find titles through a Google search targeted toward LinkedIn. Marc has changed his title from Senior Training Manager to Senior Learning and Development Manager. That’s the trending title. [34:29] Listen to Mark’s The Voice of JobSeekers, twice a month. If you've read any of Mark Twain's famous The Adventures of Tom Sawyer you know that Sawyer was quite the prankster.  One time Sawyer convinced friends Huck Finn and Joe Harper to run away. By cover of night, the three left their homes, snuck down to the river, and set out down-river on a raft. They end up on Jackson's Island where have fun pretending to be pirates for several days.   Meanwhile, back at home, their families and the town at large are in state of near hysteria. After a few days they conclude the boys have drowned, and plan their funeral for the following Sunday. Tom quietly returns to town and discovers the plans for the funeral. He returns to the island where he convinces Huck and Joe they should all stay put until the end of the week when they will return to town and march in on their own funerals.   On Sunday almost the entire town gathers at the church building where the preacher leads the sad and grieving crowd in eulogizing and mourning the poor boys whom death has claimed so early in life.  The congregation became more and more moved till the whole company broke down and joined the weeping mourners in a chorus of anguished sobs.   At that moment the three boys come through the church doors.  They had been listening to their own funeral!  The ones who were dead now are alive.  Gloom gives way to gladness.  Can you imagine attending a funeral and seeing the one for whom you grieve appear in your midst?   That’s exactly what actually happened to the disciples of Jesus.  They saw him crucified.  They knew that he had been buried.  On that first Sunday evening they were gathered in fear, mourning, and bewilderment.  Gloom prevailed.  But into that room came the risen Lord Jesus and gloom gives way to gladness.    We too can rejoice on this Easter morning because Jesus crashed his own funeral!   The Final Word “From Gloom to Gladness” John 20:19-22   Easter gloom Jesus’ disciples are afraid Jesus’ disciples are assembled Easter gladness Jesus’ disciples rejoice for His presence Jesus’ disciples rejoice for His peace Easter gifts Jesus’ disciples receive a commission Jesus’ disciples receive a companion
