When critics hinted Maurice Prendergast was getting a little repetitive as he approached 50, he could've hung up his brushes. After all, he'd been pretty successful. Instead, he headed back to where it all began--Paris--and came away reinvigorated with “a new impulse,” as he called it.   Today's episode takes us to the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington DC.

House Panel Subpoenas Andrew Cuomo To Testify On COVID Nursing Home Policies

Real News Now Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 6, 2024 5:31

Andrew Cuomo, the ex-Governor of New York, who resigned his Democratic seat amidst a scandal of sexual misconduct in 2021, has recently been summoned to give his account regarding the handling of nursing homes during the notorious COVID pandemic. This was disclosed by a GOP-anchored congressional committee this Tuesday. Cuomo has been legally bound to make an appearance for a deposition scheduled for May 24. The core emphasis of this appearance will be his directive issued in March 2020, which compelled nursing homes plus long-term care facilities in New York to admit or allow re-entry to COVID-19 patients that could potentially be infectious and had not undergone testing. According to the statement released by the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, Cuomo's order seemed to unheedingly expose the most susceptible population of New York to the fatal COVID-19, bringing in tragic results. The statement further insinuated that more than 15,000 individuals lost their lives in nursing homes or long-term care facilities across New York during Cuomo's administration due to this order. The panel's statement also indicated the presence of evidence that accentuates that Cuomo might have meddled in secretive actions to conceal the substantial mortality rate in New York's nursing homes from the public eye. This was allegedly done to redirect political implications away from his administration. Chairman Brad Wenstrup voiced his concerns saying that the policies Cuomo implemented pertaining to nursing homes had mournful outcomes for New York's most defenseless population. The ex-governor jeopardized the lives of the elderly residents and initiated a cover-up operation to disguise the actual fatality rate in these centers. The chairman criticized the prioritization of political considerations over medical counsel in these grave decisions. Wenstrup further believed that Cuomo must provide satisfactory explanations to the families of the 15,000 individuals who passed away in the nursing homes during the COVID-19 outbreak. His essential account would help unravel the circumstances which gave birth to these misguided policies. It would also enable lawmakers to ensure such devastating errors aren't repeated. Wenstrup stressed that Cuomo's evasion of accountability to Congress needs to come to an end and he should start responsibly answering the inquiries of the American people. In response to this summons, Cuomo's representative, Rich Azzopardi, labeled the subpoena as a mere media theater. He remained firm that multiple examinations revealed no wrongdoings on the former governor's part. This comment was made, particularly in relation to the subpoena signed by Oversight Chairman James Comer. In the midst of 2021, post the issuance of a report by the New York Attorney General Letitia James which outlined an undercounting of nursing home resident deaths by approximately 50%, Cuomo defended himself. He asserted that despite a slight "delay", all deaths within nursing homes and hospitals were comprehensively reported during the multi-state scrutiny by the Department of Justice. Cuomo justified the delay citing his office's preoccupation with the aforementioned inquiry and in an attempt to downplay the severity of the situation, declared, 'Everyone did the best they could'. Rita Glavin, the legal counsel to Cuomo, penned a letter to Wenstrup, made public by POLITICO on March 4, pleading him to reconsider enacting a subpoena. Detailing her client's willingness to cooperate, she mentioned that the committee had been furnished with four possible August dates for a transcribed interview, keeping Cuomo's extensive legal commitments in mind. Glavin vehemently emphasized Cuomo's spirit of cooperation. In her communication with the committee, she mentioned that they offered to provide written responses to any "Questions For the Record", to lend as much information as needed. She also assured that the alternative dates for Cuomo's interview would be open for discussion if the committee could not arrange for the same on the proposed dates. However, underlining Cuomo's legal commitments, she requested some flexibility so that his legal commitments and her professional obligations could be accommodated. Despite this, the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic on Tuesday iterated that it made a sincere effort to coordinate a voluntary interview with Cuomo on his COVID-related nursing home mandates. Adding weight to their side of the story, the committee mentioned that Cuomo had continually and unreasonably procrastinated their investigation process. He ignored multiple outreach attempts by the Select Subcommittee staff to negotiate interview dates and provided unsatisfactory availability, putting the interview nine months behind the original schedule. In the end, they expressed their despair over the unavoidable necessity of today's subpoena to elucidate the truth about New York's pandemic-era nursing home policies and provide the demanded answers to all Americans and New Yorkers. After Frank's death a small group of us who are clean & sober were looking for a way to help and be of service. We partnered with a non profit organization and tried to crowdfund the college tuition to Belmont University in Nashville TN, where Daniel had already been accepted. After publishing a piece outlining the journalistic failures leading to national headlines falsely claiming the discovery of "mass unmarked graves of Indigenous children" at the sites of former Residential Schools in Canada, Terry was slandered across social media and the Canadian literary landscape as "a residential school denialist” and "racist," despite his long history of work with Indigenous peoples and that he was correct: no "mass graves" were ever discovered, as reported. Meghan speaks with him about his reporting, the real story, and about the problems with journalism in Canada. Terry is the author of numerous books, including "The Last Great Sea: A Voyage Through the Human and Natural History of the North Pacific Ocean." His work has covered regional and global politics, natural history, and anthropology. There's plenty of awful things to say about Canada's abusive residential school system. But last summer, the nation was gripped by reports that “mass graves” of children were discovered at some school sites. What you can't say, apparently, is that those reports were mistaken and that nothing new was really discovered last year, as veteran journalist and author Terry Glavin established with his meticulously reported recent National Post feature reviewing what actually happened. Glavin joins Anthony to talk about the attacks he's faced for reporting truths people didn't want to hear. And about how journalistic negligence, political opportunism and white guilt-tripping hijacked what First Nations have really been saying. (Recorded June 23, 2022) Learn more about your ad choices. She wrote regularly about the interior life or interior spirit. Her own contemplative practice provided her with the kind of ongoing experiences which allowed her to know what it tasted like, felt like, to be in union with, communion with, in relationship with, touched by and touching, the living Christ. So, what about us?" A native of upstate New York, Sr. Maureen Glavin has been a member of the Society of the Sacred Heart for 34 years. Death in The Garden

On this episode of “Death in The Garden,” we had the honor to interview Steven Donziger in his Manhattan apartment on his 623rd day of house arrest for the baseless misdemeanor charge of criminal contempt. For 27 years, Steven has been fighting for the indigenous & rural peoples of the Ecuadorian Amazon who, from 1967 to 1992 suffered cancer causing abuses and atrocities at the hands of the oil company Texaco, which has since merged with Chevron. Texaco executives had made deliberate decisions to cut costs by polluting the rivers and streams, creating an ecological disaster worse than the Valdez oil spill. They admitted to dumping 16 billion gallons of toxic waste during this time. This waste has caused unimaginable horrors for the humans and the ecosystem in this region of the Amazon. In 2011, Steven and his Ecuadorian partners won a historic judgement against Chevron. This judgement would be $9.5 billion to clean up the rainforest so that some semblance of paradise might be returned to the victims of this crime: the Secoya, the Siona, the Cofan, the Quechua, the Waorani, and the now extinct Tetete, who were wiped out by this atrocity. The judgement against Chevron has been affirmed by 6 appellate courts including the Supreme courts of both Ecuador and Canada. Instead of complying with the court order, Chevron began a retaliation campaign to discredit and demonize Steven, as well as a number of his associates in Ecuador (Secoya Indigenous leader Javier Piaguaje and farmer Hugo Camacho). Chevron claimed that the case was fraudulent based solely on admittedly false testimony from a witness that the company (Chevron themselves) had paid $2 million, Alberto Guerra. In July of 2019, Judge Lewis A. Kaplan charged Steven with criminal contempt for refusing to break his attorney-client confidentiality by turning over his cell phone & computer over to Chevron. Steven has been imprisoned under house arrest since then. His trial is May 10, 2021. Steven's lawyers say the preceding will be a farce given he is being denied a jury with the sole fact-finder being a judge who has locked him up for 2 years pretrial. The judge, Loretta A. The 9iar Chronicles - Season not the ten 1974/75   Two Cups - but no Ten-in-a-Row League Position – 3rd - finishing 11pts behind Rangers who won the League and 4pts behind Hibernian League Cup – Winners Scottish Cup – Winners Drybrough Cup - Winners European Cup - First Round   Celtic were to miss out on a world record of ten consecutive League championships this season and had to be content with the two domestic cups and the Drybrough Cup in it's last year. This season saw the retirement of Billy McNeill and the departure on free transfers at the end of the season of the last true veterans of the golden age with the release of Jimmy Johnstone and Jim Brogan. The only remaining Lisbon Lion at the end of the season was Bobby Lennox.   Celtic did not travel abroad for any pre-season games this season but used the Drybrough Cup and domestic friendlies to sort the team out. There was an embarrassing one-off trip to West Germany to play Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen which ended in the joint highest defeat under Jock Stein so far. Interest in the Drybrough Cup was faintly raised when the final threw Rangers and Celtic together with the game ending in a draw and Celtic winning the rights to the Cup 4-2 on penalties. This was the last season this Cup would be played though it would return in 1979. The performances were somewhat jaded and lacking in enthusiasm one normally expected from a Celtic team but this was put down to a short inter-season lay-off period with the World Cup and Scotland's involvement in that also taking place during the shut down. Added to this would be that Danny McGrain had returned from the World Cup having been diagnosed diabetic.   The League Cup saw Celtic in Group 4 with Motherwell, Dundee Utd and Ayr Utd. The format had been changed with one team qualifying from each group for the Quarter finals and the rather silly offside rule used in the Drybrough - only being offside beyond the 18 yard box - persisted with even though it was disliked by all. In the second game Celtic received a shock losing to Ayr Utd. The jaded performances were for real and Jock Stein found himself with three immediate problems :- a goalkeeping crisis, a vulnerable defense and the strike force misfiring. These all needed to be addressed. None could be addressed with immediate effect. Celtic, however, duly put the results together to qualify for the quarter finals with a game in hand in the Group Satge and were drawn against Hamilton Academicals managed by ex-Celt Eric Smith. A 2-0 win at home followed by a 4-2 away win saw them comfortably through to face Airdrie in the semi final. This was a turgid affair settled by a single goal from Stevie Murray in the second half. Hibernian had also made it through all the way and the final was a classic Celtic performance with Dixie Deans scoring a hatrick as well as Joe Harper also getting a hatrick and ending on the losing side.   That was one Cup in the bag done and dusted by the end of October. Already Celtic had seen George Connelly walk out and state that he was quitting football. He did relent and returned to train and eventually win a starting place again in November and December. But the assessment of the team had seen Jimmy Quinn, Vic Davidson, Jimmy Bone and Andy Lynch all told that they could leave on frees. Also by this time Celtic found themselves out of the European Cup at the first hurdle. A 1-1 draw at home achieved after the sending off of an Olympiakos player was not enough and in the flare and smoke of the Athens game Celtic went down 2-0.Olympiakos were an unfancied side and they duly made their own exit at the next round. Was this an indication of European fragility? The side that had won the big cup, made the semi final twice and had been described as European attack masters looked woefully out of sorts.   What happened in the League to lose the tenth successive title is really a continuation of the faults that had been seen at the start of the season being cruelly exposed in the second half in the New Year. By that point Ronnie Glavin had been signed after much beating around the fee from Partick Thistle. At the age of 23 he had been the Jags captain and leading player as well as a Scotland U-23 cap. Signed in November for a club record of £80,000, Glavin had been a target for a number of clubs and Partick Thistle, under manager and ex-Celt Bertie Auld were looking to cash in. Glavin arrived to add extra firepower and to help Dalglish who was turning out to be easily the most competent and rounded player in Scotland. After a successful scoring debut he found it not as easy as first thought to fit into the team and in January he found himself dropped as Stein wrestled to find a winning formula again.   The catalyst that started to bring the house tumbling down was the 3-0 loss to Rangers at Ibrox in January. Celtic did not play too badly but there were too many first team players that failed to hit form and this was worrying. With a further 4 points dropped in the next five games which included dispiriting draws away to Arbroath and at home to Dumbarton. With the goalkeeping crisis much in evidence Peter Latchford was recruited from West Bromwich Albion. Latchford came up and played in a Friendly and in wizard time he was duly signed on an initial loan deal and saw out the rest of the season as first choice keeper. At times the support and Jock Stein must have thought what they had taken on as Latchford was prone to the occasional howler and soft goal. But he would develop substantially from this his first season at Celtic. Despite trying everything the crisis could not be averted and Celtic would drop a further 13 points in 10 games to finish third behind Rangers and Hibernian. Needless to say this was a shock to the supporters who had come to see over the last 10 years the Championship as a permanent feature at Celtic Park and the League programme kicking off each season with the raising of a new Championship flag.   The reality was that the flow of players coming through had dried up. Though Dalglish was without doubt the most accomplished footballer in Scotland he could not do it all by himself. The midfield lacked a David Hay type player. George Connelly, whilst a gifted sweeper and defender as well as having exquisite skill, was now emotionally fragile. McNeill was reaching the end of his career as too was Jim Brogan. Add to that a lack of bite upfront, despite Paul Wilson having his best season ever, it was more a collective malaise within the strike force that saw them missing chances and playing underpar when before they had been the Green Machine.   The retrieval of the season came with the Scottish Cup winning 3-1 against Airdrie who were in their first Cup Final since 1928. By this point the League had already been lost so it was with absolute faith that Jock Stein sent them out onto the Hampden pitch knowing that they would return with the cup. At the end of that game Billy McNeill announced his retirement.   If the club felt low at having to bear the loss of the tenth successive League title then they could console themselves with two trophies at least. Things could not get worse. Could they?   Enjoy…

“There’s an appetite out there for innovation. Hate bringing a sleeping bag and padding to put underneath it? Can’t get comfortable in a mummy sleeping bag? You’re not alone. In fact a lot of people stopped going camping or to festivals all together just because they were tired of taking all kinds of equipment and still not getting a good night’s sleep.
