Katsi Cook is a beacon in an array of quiet powerful worlds — a magnetic, joyous, loving presence. The public conversation we offer up here was part of a gathering where a fantastic group of young people had come to be nourished, to explore the depths of what community can mean, to become more grounded and whole. They've taken to sitting at the feet of this Mohawk wise woman, mother, and grandmother, and you will experience why.Katsi Cook is globally renowned in the field of midwifery. Her practice and teaching, based in ancient ancestral knowledge, have taken an esteemed place in research and advances in the science of environmental reproductive health. She is founder of the National Aboriginal Council of Midwives of Canada. Her work is at heart, she says, about the "reclamation of the transformative power of birth." And Katsi Cook is helping our world recover the natural human experience of cross-generational companionship and care. This conversation you'll hear between her and Krista, sitting in a room of mostly young people, was an exercise in the art of eldering — which Katsi Cook calls nothing more and nothing less than "generational wealth transmission."Katsi Cook is an Onkwehonweh traditional midwife, elder, and Executive Director of Spirit Aligned Leadership Program. She is a Wolf Clan member of the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation and resides at the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe in upstate New York. Her groundbreaking environmental research of Mohawk mother's milk revealed the intergenerational impact of industrial chemicals on the health and well-being of an entire community.  Katsi leads a movement of matrilineal awareness and rematriation in Native life. Her book discussed in this episode is Worlds Within Us: Wisdom and Resilience of Indigenous Women Elders.Find an excellent transcript of this show, edited by humans, on our show page at onbeing.org.  There you can find links that will provide context on other people mentioned in the show.Special thanks for the entire experience that brought On Being together with Katsi Cook:Reverend Don Chatfield, Tammy Saltus, and the All Souls Interfaith Gathering congregation; Megan Camp, Tre McCarney, and the team at Shelburne Farms; The Harris and Herzberber Families and High Acres Farms, Philo Ridge Farm, Spirit Aligned Leadership, Gedakina, Guaní Press, and the Akwesasne Freedom School.  Jennifer Brandel with Hearken; Mara Zepeda and MCK Keefrider with Linestone, Amelia Rose Barlow, Kristine Hill with Collective Wisdom, and Sara Jolena Wolcott with Sequoia Samanvaya, and audio engineer Abra Clawson.  The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation; Wayfarer Foundation; Democracy Fund; and (m)otherboard who supported this Gathering, as well as: Aimee Arandia Østensen, Aly Perry, Amanda Herzberger, Andrew Berns, Ashley Henry, Chief Beverly Cook, Ben Von Wong, Bread and Butter Farm, Carson Linforth Bowley,  Casey Ryan, Charlotte Hardie, Christine Lai, Courtney Mulcahy, David Alder, Ethan Bond-Watts, Elizabeth Stewart, Eve Bradford, Grace Oedel, Hanna Satterlee, Heidi Webb, Jeff Herzberger, Jennifer Daniels, Jonathan Harris, John Stokes, Joey Borgogna, Josie Watson, José Barreiro, Judy Dow,  Katherine Elmer, Kathy Treat, Ken Miles, Liana Gillooly, Loretta Afraid of Bear Cook, Lynn van Housen, Mario Picayo, Michelle Dai Zotti, Paul & Eileen Growald, Raquel Picayo, Rob Anderson,  Speranza Foundation, Tom Cook, Tom Porter, Scott Thrift, Sherry Oakes-Jackson, Ssong Yang, Sue Dixon, Sydney Bolger, Vera Simon-Nobes, Waylon Cook, Wendy Bratt. ______Sign up for The Pause, a monthly Saturday morning companion for all things On Being, with a heads-up on new episodes, special offerings, event invitations, recommendations, and reflections from Krista all year round.

It's not uncommon for nature educators to have experiences that defy easy explanations, like the appearance of birds, deer, squirrels or mice in one of our forays into the wild with students.  The presence of humans who are quiet and respectful seems to attract wild creatures sometimes, leading to connections that have a powerful impact on our lives. John and I talk about the importance of program names, the influence and visions of native elders and how mentoring changes lives.    Website:  TheTrackingProject.org Weather Book mentioned in this episode:   https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/the-weather-wizards-cloud-book-a-unique-way-to-predict-the-weather-accurately-and-easily-by-reading-the-clouds-workman-undated-diariesadvent-calendars_louis-d-rubin-sr_jim-duncan/317550/item/12542392/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=high_vol_frontlist_standard_shopping_customer_acquisition&utm_adgroup=&utm_term=&utm_content=689361939032&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiAjeW6BhBAEiwAdKltMpyGsxAnzbAxObC62rwwwsVJyZJ8vgevJkNz5JOWSHoZz-lMzf1i4hoCoOAQAvD_BwE#idiq=12542392&edition=2748532 Thanksgiving Address Books:     https://thetrackingproject.org/the-tracking-project-teaching-resources/ Institute of Natural Law Substack Article:    https://instituteofnaturallaw.substack.com/p/tracking-the-language-of-nature-with Forest Educator Bonus Content Page: http://foresteducator.com/bonuscontent Join the Forest Educator Patreon! https://patreon.com/ForestEducatorPodcast Connect with Ricardo: https://www.foresteducator.com/ https://www.theforestboxforkids.com/ https://www.hawkcircle.com/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ricardo-sierra-5980931/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_forest_educator_podcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RicardohawkSierra

John returns to the Forest Educator Podcast to share more of his unique journey into nature and tracking.  John's work with youth led him to upstate New York, in the Northern border area, where he learned about communicating with bears.  (Very helpful to know when you work with youth in the wild!)   In each place where he traveled, he found elders who shared powerful experiences that changed how he saw and connected with the natural world.  These events helped John tremendously when working with diverse and unique cultures in the American Southwest, Hawaii, Sweden and Brazil.    With every story and conversation, I find myself learning and reflecting about my own connection to nature and self.  I find myself thinking about them often, and it's amazing how they go deeper each time, with new meanings and insights that enrich my understanding of the world and my place in it.  I am grateful for the opportunity to share these recordings with forest educators everywhere, for a world in need of more peace, more dreaming and new ways of living on the earth.  Website:   https://thetrackingproject.org/ Instagram:   https://www.instagram.com/thetrackingproject/ Facebook:   https://www.facebook.com/TheTrackingProject/ YouTube:    https://www.youtube.com/@thetrackingproject Forest Educator Bonus Content Page: http://foresteducator.com/bonuscontent Join the Forest Educator Patreon! https://patreon.com/ForestEducatorPodcast Connect with Ricardo: https://www.foresteducator.com/ https://www.theforestboxforkids.com/ https://www.hawkcircle.com/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ricardo-sierra-5980931/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_forest_educator_podcast/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RicardohawkSierra

It was through Tom Brown Jr and his Tracker School that I came to meet John.  It was 1984, on a farm in western New Jersey, and he was an instructor at the school, and spending seven days with him and the rest of the staff and Tom changed the direction of my life in a radical way. John was pulled to New Mexico in 1986, where he founded The Tracking Project, and began running rites of passage camps for boys and girls, as well as adult trainings and retreats. I was incredibly fortunate to spend time in his Nurturing the Roots Mentoring Program, where he had gathered elders from Australia, Sweden, Hawaii, Mexico, Brazil, and across North America.   Learning and connecting with those elders and John and his staff was a revelation that blew my mind, because they held a mentoring space that was unlike anything I had experienced before.    This experience changed the way I tracked animals, connected to nature, taught and led my camps, trainings and programs. It even affected my personal and community relationships   In this first of a series of conversations, we dive into what learning tracking does to us and for us as human beings, and John describes his apprenticeship with some of the best trackers in the world.    Please enjoy Episode #133. Joe Glaser pioneered it in the early 80s with the help of test pilots, Brent Mason, Ricky Skaggs, and Steve Wariner. For Mason, it was hot-rodding his 1967 Tele, for Skaggs and Wariner, Joe made the equivalent of formula one racers from the ground up with eye-catching finishes, flame maple necks, the aforementioned middle pickup, and his patented string benders. Whether photographed in a coffin or depicted on an Art Nouveau poster, the French actor Sarah Bernhardt knew exactly how to get maximum publicity. Although her first outings on the stage were unremarkable, she refined her skills and rose to become the leading actor of her generation and a world-famous name. Her life off-stage was a further source of endless fascination, her eccentric and occasionally arrogant behaviour only adding to her allure. Her critics saw her as manipulative and hackneyed. For her admirers, seeing Bernhardt ‘die' on stage was a moment to be treasured for ever. Today we might find the late 19th-century acting style captured on film and sound recordings affected. But her legacy is being re-evaluated, as a woman who took control of her own destiny. Bridget Kendall charts Sarah Bernhardt's life and career with John Stokes, Emeritus Professor of Modern British Literature at King's College London, who's published widely on theatre history, including The French Actress and Her English Audience; Victoria Duckett, Senior Lecturer in Screen and Design at Deakin University in Melbourne and the author of Seeing Sarah Bernhardt: Performance and Silent Film; and Sharon Marcus, the Orlando Harriman Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. Her 2019 book The Drama of Celebrity is an exploration of the processes that propel a figure such as Sarah Bernhardt to global fame. An Albanian teenager that was trafficked to the UK has lost a battle to continue living in the country following an unsuccessful appeal to the High Court. 18-year-old Samet reported that he was beaten and abused before being made to beg on the streets of Albania at age 11. He was then sold into slavery and trafficked to the UK when he was just 15 years old. Three years later, he now lives with a foster father John Stokes, attends college, and plans to become a carpenter. He was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder following his traumatic childhood but has become “part of the family” with John and his foster brothers, Ali and Dave. Stokes set up a petition to try and stop the Home Office from deporting him. “Our family greatly fears for his safety and health if he is sent away,” the petition states. “Deprived of education for many years, Samet grasped the opportunity of school and then college where his efforts are described as outstanding in all areas. He dreams of being a carpenter and the sort of ordinary life most of us take for granted were always clouded by the daily fear that he could be rejected by the nation that's given him hope for the first time.” Exit journalist Alice Taylor interviews John about the fight for Samet's right to a happy life and future.

Alice has played for virtually every professional UK orchestra you could name. There is much discussion of Alice's incredible eyewear - jazz glasses no less - and a slightly awkward moment where Seb discovers he’d been at junior college with Alice for a couple of years and not realised. In this rich conversation, Eli talks about how spending time in the wilderness helps adolescent boys hone their inner voice, an essential tool when it comes to resisting and reprograming the toxic messages they receive from society around sex and masculinity. Eli shares vulnerably about his own experience as an adolescent boy (including his stint as Stifler's little brother in the film American Pie, which in my opinion makes him especially equipped to wax poetic on how culture programs young men to think about sexuality). A talented poet, Eli shares his original poetry at the end of the episode. Eli Marienthal is the co-director of Back to Earth and the founding faculty of W.I.L.D., a wilderness guiding, outdoor education organization that works with adolescence to develop practices of personal development and self-care through a culture of peacemaking and thanksgiving. He is trained through The Tracking Project in Corrales, New Mexico, a non-profit led by John Stokes devoted to peacemaking, nature awareness and cross cultural respect. Eli holds masters degrees from Brown University and the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied international development, agriculture, and the politics of humanitarianism. Eli is also a poet, dancer, songwriter and spoken-word performer. He was a first generation Youth Speaks poet, and was the youngest member of a winning Brave New Voices National Slam Team, as well as the youngest to win the Bay Area Slam. Description: This week's podcast is a presentation I gave in December, 2019 in Maui.  I invite on stage during the middle of the presentation, John Stokes. John has worked with the Aborigines, the Hawaiian elders, the Iroquois and with so many indigenous people.  He shared a prophecy with me that was so profound and so connected to what we're doing in terms of protecting nature from being replaced by gene edited GMOs.  I also go deeply into some of the newer GMO threats and the specifics of what we can do about it.

Key Takeaways 02:50:“We have arrived at an inevitable moment in human civilization where we can easily reorder the codes of life and redirect the streams of evolution for all time. One would hope that such unprecedented power would be balanced by a society equipped with farsighted vision, advanced moral and ethical values, rock solid safety mechanisms, and a profound understanding of how altered DNA functions. We have none of these.” 5:00:“John Stokes...sat with a Hawaiian elder in 1991 who spoke to him...and said...he should create a circle that will catch the earth when it falls and stand it up in a good way.  And if he does, there'll be 2000 years of peace. And if he doesn't, it will be the end of biological evolution as we know it.” 8:09:“Because what is this genetic engineering but replacing nature,? GMO: God Move Over.  Eliminating nature. Not realizing that nature carries intelligence that needs to be studied and appreciated and expanded.” 9:35:“Institute for Responsible Technology, those of us working on this, we're not just here to simply protect from the replacement of nature...But we can point the direction to the sacredness and sanctity of life, of the nature of nature. And in that, possibly we can support a transformation of human civilization.” 10:20:“So my message in this holiday season, my birthday inspiration from my time in Hawaii is to align with the intelligence and sacredness of nature.” 11:21:“So even in our actions of being activists, of protecting against companies like Monsanto that do not evoke celebration, we can take the higher road and we can carry that celebration in our hearts and learn from and live from nature in that way.”

Marney the Fox is the next collection from The Treasury of British Comics imprint and on this week's podcast we take a trip into the countryside with artist John Stokes. Appearing in Buster weekly from June 1974 to September 1976, this Watership Down-style tale followed a lone fox cub’s desperate struggle to survive in a dangerous world. Written by the late Scott Goodall, the series was lavishly illustrated by Stokes, whose remarkable career has seen him go from uncredited work on British children's weekly comics to inking Grant Morrison's The Invisibles. His story is one of changing times and a changing industry, but throughout his work has retained its old school charm and solid workmanship. In this episode, John talks about his childhood amidst the riots in pre-partition India to living on a houseboat to his parallel career creating sets for theatrical productions. [Listen on iTunes] ROBERT B. SMYTH believes that stories are what make life, the world, and ourselves unfold. For 25+ years, he ran Yellow Moon Press, an independent publishing company, whose focus was the oral tradition as it relates to storytelling, poetry and music. His love of story drew him to the mythopoetic men’s work of Robert Bly, Michael Meade, James Hillman, John Stokes, and others as an organizer of numerous events where men explored and nurtured themselves with folktales, poems, and personal reflection. In his interview, he shares stories and poems that have revealed the world to him. In this episode we talk about: Robert’s journey into the mytho-poetic men’s work world of the 70’s and 80’s. The power of poetry to transform our relationships - to ourselves AND to others. What it means to be a man in the world without being that stereotypical dominant male. The importance of family lineage, and finding the grave of his great, great, great grandfather. Quotes from this episode: “The demons don’t go away, but you learn what they are, what they’re about, and how to talk to them… because they’re there because they’ve been ignored, and they need to be talked to just like you talk to a good friend if they’re having trouble to understand what’s going on.” “I was in boarding school and I had a couple of teacher that started to teach poetry, and it started to help me explain and understand and explore my feelings, my approach, my interaction with the world and with others.” Resources from this episode: Yellow Moon Press - Robert’s publishing company
