Download the Catalist 'What Happened in 2024' Report: https://catalist.us/whathappened2024/-Chuck Rocha is joined by guest co-host Maria Cardona and Catalist CEO Michael Frias to unpack the hard truths and hidden opportunities in the Democratic Party's relationship with Latino voters. With Mike Madrid off for the week, Chuck, Maria, and Michael dig deep into the latest Catalist's 'What Happened in 2024' report, detailing Latino Voter trends since 2012, with a distinct focus on the 2024 election. From Obama's 2012 10% share to today's razor-thin margins, Michael delivers the “Rocha Cliff Notes” on where Democrats gained, where they lost, and why the competition for Latino voters has never been fiercer.
This weekend, the New York Times ran a piece titled Six Months Later, Democrats Are Still Searching for the Path Forward, and it was bleak. The lead quote came from Anat Shenker-Osorio, a favorite of this show, describing Democrats as sloths, snails, and most devastatingly, a deer in headlights. That last one feels accurate, especially when you look at the post-election breakdown from Catalist, a Democratic-aligned polling firm. We'll dive deeper into that next week with Michael Cohen, but the short version? The coalition looks grim.Democrats are losing ground, and it's not just because of Joe Biden or Kamala Harris. It's not just about the top of the ticket. It's structural. They don't have a message that resonates, and they don't have a coalition that can win. When you look at how the electorate has shifted since 2012 — through 2016, 2020, and now 2024 — the trend is clear. Wide swaths of the country keep moving right. This is not just a Trump story. This is a cultural shift.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. There are a few bright spots — like John Ossoff. The Atlanta suburbs are still trending blue, which gives him a strong base going into his re-election. But one candidate's survival isn't a strategy. The bigger problem is Democrats losing voters they used to count on, and then reacting like anthropologists studying a foreign culture. Take the new $20 million project codenamed SAM — “Speaking with American Men.” The plan is to understand what language appeals to young men online and then buy ad space in video games. I'm not kidding.I'll save you the $20 million. Want to understand American men? Go to a sports bar at lunch. Talk to the bartender. Watch what's on TV. It's going to be Capitals games, Commanders games, maybe Nationals if they're hot. Ask what name the bartender uses — Commanders or Redskins — and pay attention. That's a signal. Look around. You'll see a guy without sleeves. His name is Pat McAfee. He parlayed a Barstool podcast into a national show that's shaping how a huge swath of American men consume sports and culture.McAfee is the demographic. Not the man, but the space he occupies. You don't need to book him — in fact, don't. But understand what kind of guests are on his show. What they talk about. What they joke about. The cultural signals they send. Most aren't overtly political, but they skew conservative. They care about sports, performance, and authenticity. They aren't trying to be progressive heroes. They're just being themselves — and Democrats don't know how to speak to that. The real issue is that Democrats think everything is messaging. They believe their phrasing is so perfect, so tested, that if people just heard it the right way, it would work. But voters aren't lab rats. They're not waiting for the next DNC ad drop to form their opinions. They're watching comedians joke about trans athletes. They're laughing at jokes about liberal overreach. They're reacting to a world where Democrats are often cast as anti-fun and anti-speech. And white men — yes, still the overwhelming majority of this country — don't respond well to being told they're the problem from the start. So how do you reach them? Start by understanding who's already reaching them. Then think about what message would land quietly on a show like Pat McAfee's. Not what would stand out. What would blend in. That's the Rosetta Stone. Speak in a way that doesn't sound like a speech. Get out of your own head. Stop trying to convert — start trying to connect. And meanwhile, while Democrats strategize over lunch buffets at luxury hotels, Trump is climbing in the polls. The idea that he's getting “less popular” is just wrong. His lowest point was late April. Since then, his numbers have rebounded. His approval is hovering around 47 percent. That's good — especially for someone who normally lives in the 30s. Right now, more Americans think the country is on the right track under Trump than they ever did under Biden. The direction-of-the-country numbers are strong. For Trump. That's insane. And Democrats ignore it at their peril. They keep underestimating him. They keep assuming the messaging is enough. But Trump is talking about tax cuts for tips and overtime. Democrats are voting for them too — the Senate just passed a version 100 to 0. They know it polls well. They just don't want to say it out loud unless it's their version.Politics is about trust. And the Biden White House broke it. When it's he said, she said, voters side with the one who hasn't lied to them. That's Trump right now. And if Democrats want to change that, they've got to start being honest — not just with the public, but with themselves.Chapters00:00:00 - Intro00:01:44 - Democrat Rebranding Struggles00:26:16 - Update00:27:34 - US-EU Trade Talks and Consumer Confidence00:31:32 - Senate Republican Fiscal Concerns00:34:34 - Covid Vaccine Recommendations Pulled00:37:52 - Interview with Juliegrace Brufke01:04:15 - Wrap-up This is a public episode. When we booked this episode with Pod Save America co-host Dan Pfeiffer several weeks back, our plan was to talk about the Democrats and their strategy and messaging around Trump - something Dan's been writing about for his Substack, Message Box. Should Democrats just focus on the economy? Should they raise alarm bells over deportations? How loudly and strongly should they push back against Trump? And we do discuss that, but as it turned out, there was a lot more to talk about with Dan. For one, as a former Obama senior adviser, Amy wanted to ask his thoughts on the new reporting coming out about Joe Biden's health and how his inner circle worked to conceal it. In addition to that, we received an important report from the data firm Catalist about 2024 voters, shedding more light on why Kamala Harris lost and Donald Trump won. As a fellow data nerd, I knew Dan would be ready to dive into it.We recorded this on Wednesday, May 21st.You can watch our entire conversation on our YouTube channel.Sign up for our free weekly newsletter, In Brief: https://www.cookpolitical.com/in-brief-sign-upLearn more about The Cook Political Report: www.cookpolitical.com/subscribe
Henry's back with an all-rant episode to assess a couple of significant developments that party leaders ought to take notice of. What are the strengths and weaknesses as of today, since the Catalist board was set up in 2007? Synopsis: Senior columnist Ven Sreenivasan offers you an extra edge in managing your hard-earned money. In this episode, Ven hosts Ong Hwee Li, the chief executive officer of SAC Capital. SAC specialises in areas like investment banking, corporate mergers and acquisitions, initial public offerings and equities research. They look at the profile of a segment of the Singapore market, Catalist. Sometimes referred to as the “junior board”, the Catalist board was set up in 2007 to cater for companies which do not meet the full earnings track record or compliance requirement for mainboard listing. Today, there are about 207 Catalist companies listed on the Singapore Exchange, whose total market cap is about S$642 billion. Catalist companies account for S$8.5 billion of this. SAC Capital is particularly known as a sponsor of companies which come to market via Catalist listings. Does Mr Ong see non-sponsor activities being a conflict for such sponsors? How can such sponsors help Catalist companies to become better, improve their reputation and standing on the SGX? Highlights (click/tap above): 1:40 Stagnant Singapore equities market? Delistings overtaking new listings, and is there a lack of communications between listed companies and the markets? 3:30 On 'hidden gem' Catalist stocks; what is the role of a Catalist sponsor? 5:16 How SAC Capital prevents breaches from happening; what happens if Catalist sponsors are removed? 7:13 Are non-sponsor activities a conflict for sponsors? 8:20 How can sponsors help Catalist companies to become better, and improve their reputation and standing on the SGX? As part of our community health partnership with Valley Health, this month we discuss adolescent mental health and substance use issues with Whitney Maddox, a licensed professional counselor and coordinator for the Catalyst program, and Amanda Dondero, a licensed clinical social worker and adolescent outpatient behavioral health supervisor with Valley Health Outpatient Behavioral Health. Our conversation covers the success of the CATALIST program, which addresses co-occurring substance use and mental health issues in adolescents, and outlines the importance of early intervention and family involvement. They discuss how the pandemic has heightened the need for mental health services and provide details on how to access these services. The pair highlight the challenges parents face in recognizing and dealing with their children's mental health and substance use issues, and the importance of community support systems. Whitney and Amanda emphasize the need for proactive approaches and proper education for both parents and children to combat these issues effectively.

It is all about advancing the healthcare landscape in the region as we speak to one of the leading providers of integrated medical technology solutions in Singapore and Southeast Asia. Listed on the Catalist board of the Singapore Exchange, AJJ Medtech Holdings offers over 6,000 products ranging from healthcare consumables such as catheters to medical devices like blood glucose monitoring systems. The company also offers more sophisticated equipment that can be used for the diagnostic imaging of cancer, as well as dental care-related devices. Some of its customers include public hospitals in Singapore, as well as players within the private healthcare landscape. But what is interesting about AJJ Medtech Holdings was that the firm was formerly known as OEL Holdings up until February this year. And OEL Holdings wasn't always in the healthcare space. In fact, OEL Holdings, which was founded back in 1984 in Singapore, was in the offshore shipyard business until just five years ago in 2019. That was when a new management team was handed the reins of the company to break into the growing medtech sector. The new management team had seen an opportunity in the rising demand for medical devices, and believed that taking over a publicly listed firm like OEL Holdings and pivoting it into a medical business was an efficient way to gain industry recognition and grow quickly. But fast forward to today, how has the new management's perceived "reverse takeover" of OEL Holdings' helped it deepen its roots in the regional healthcare landscape and tap public capital? Also, where are the bright spots for the firm looking ahead as the population in the region ages, and as countries like Singapore put in additional emphasis on community care? On Under the Radar, The Evening Runway's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Yulei Zhang, Chief Strategy Officer, AJJ Medtech and Tan Wei Jie, Director of Business Development, AJJ Medtech. In this episode of Money Made Simple brought to you by Simplicity, we attempt to demystify and "dejargonise" the behemoth known as the Stock Exchange! And 'cos we're not actually share market aficionados, this week we've wrangled in a special guest who actually is. We welcome Colin Magee, founder of Catalist, to the show to explain to us what we mean when we throw the terms "share", "stock", or "equities" around. We're going to kickstart the year by bringing you an inside look into the final company that was listed on the Singapore Exchange in 2023. If you've guessed Winking Studios - you're right! Established in 2003, Winking Studios is a game-art outsourcing studio majority owned by Acer Gaming. Game art outsourcing, for context, involves the creation and development of digital art assets such as game character design and 3D. Headquartered in Singapore, Winking Studios currently has seven studios across Nanjing, Shanghai and Taipei with a staff count of over 700 people. It has also expanded its suite of offerings to look at game development and the release of gaming peripherals. The firm said it is Asia's third-largest and the world's fourth-largest game art outsourcing studio, with 19 of the world's 25 largest game developers being its customers. Back to the point on listing, Winking Studios is the sixth to list on the SGX in 2023 in a fully subscribed IPO. The company said prior to its listing that it intends to use its proceeds to establish overseas subsidiaries and offices in Asia. It wants to double down on business development and marketing efforts in the US and Europe, as well as pursue strategic acquisitions to grow its market share. But why is the firm expanding its sphere of influence lately and what opportunities does it see in the art outsourcing market in the near term? On Under the Radar, The Evening Runway's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Johnny Jan, Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Winking Studios.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this week's episode of Politics In Question, Lee takes a big picture look at political polling with Michael Podhorzer. Podhorzer is a senior fellow at the Center for American Process where he writes weekly on election data and political strategy. He is the former political director of the AFL-CIO. Podhorzer founded the Analyst Institute, the Independent Strategic Research Collaborative (ISRC), the Defend Democracy Project, and the Polling Consortium, and helped found America Votes, Working America, For Our Future, and Catalist.Does political polling account for place, community, and political organization? How does the present approach to polling overlook state and local dynamics? To what extent have the Democratic and Republican parties altered their geographical bases of support in recent decades? How have the cultural and economic aspects of place shaped the two parties? And is a kakistocracy? These are some of the questions Michael and Lee ask in this week's episode.

Our guest for today is Memiontec, a Catalist-listed water treatment company that designs and builds systems and water treatment plants in countries such as Singapore, Indonesia and China. There have been sooo many hot takes about the 2022 midterms, which is why we're joined on this week's episode of "The Downballot" by Michael Frias and Hillary Anderson of the progressive data firm Catalist to discuss their data-intensive report on what actually happened. They explain how they marry precinct-level election results with detailed voter files to go far beyond what the polls can tell us. Among the findings: Highly competitive races were much more favorable to Democrats than less-contested ones; Republicans paid a "MAGA tax" by nominating extreme candidates; and non-college white women shifted toward Democrats by notable margins compared to 2020.Co-hosts David Nir and David Beard also do a deep, deep dive on the many implications of the Supreme Court's shock redistricting ruling in Alabama last week. The Davids explain why the nay-sayers are wrong to minimize the impact of the decision, which will very likely lead to new districts where Black voters can elect their preferred candidates not only in Alabama but also Louisiana, Georgia, and maybe even Texas. They also discuss what those new districts might look like, and how we know.Map links: Alabama | Georgia & LouisianaTranscript to come.

Singapore shares opened lower today in contrast to largely positive trading sessions in the global markets. The Straits Times Index (STI) was down 0.2 per cent to 3,189.22 points in early trade after 65.1 million securities changed hands. In terms of companies to watch for today, we have Hatten Land and Quantum Healthcare. The Catalist-listed medical group has signed a tenancy agreement to occupy 138,769 square feet of rental space at Hatten Land's Imperio Mall@Hatten City in Melaka, Malaysia. Meanwhile, a series of central bank actions in Europe, Japan are set to take the centre stage this week. Not to mention China's central bank lowering a short-term lending rate for the first time in 10 months to restore market confidence and prop up a stalling post-pandemic recovery. On Market View, the Drive Time team unpacked these developments with Toby Gresham, Investment Counselor Team Lead, Citi Private Bank.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Singapore listed companies are getting better at sustainability reporting. The first polls are closing as millions of Americans vote on the electoral fates of President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden, who offered sharply divergent visions for the future amid a Covid-19 pandemic that shows no sign of abating.Voting has closed in eastern Kentucky and parts of Indiana at the start of an election night in which more than 100 million early and mail-in ballots have already been cast.At the end of what has been a remarkably stable race, the President crossed the finish line after a frenetic sprint across the battleground states, during which he continued to undermine the integrity of the election by falsely raising the specter of cheating in the possible tipping point state of Pennsylvania. He painted a dark portrait of what America could look like under a Biden administration, claiming that the former vice president would trigger an economic collapse with extended lockdowns to stamp out the virus. After months of refusing to commit to a peaceful transfer of power and repeatedly lodging false claims about widespread voter fraud -- when there is no evidence that it exists -- the President gave a more muted interview to "Fox & Friends" Tuesday morning, predicting that he had a "very solid chance of winning" and said he would declare victory "when there's victory, if there's victory," adding there is no reason to play games. He later visited Republican National Committee offices in northern Virginia and predicted a "great night ahead," but also reflected the uncertainty of Election Day, saying he had prepared neither a victory speech nor a concession speech."Hopefully we'll be only doing one of those two and you know, winning is easy. Losing is never easy. Not for me it's not," he said.Speaking with reporters Tuesday afternoon, Biden reminisced about the lessons he has learned over nearly five decades in politics and said that he was hopeful about the changes he has seen in race relations and political engagement. In response to Trump's efforts to undermine the election, he underscored his view that a president cannot determine the outcome of an election -- only the voters can.Biden ended his final day of campaigning on a more optimistic note, promising to unite the country and calling it the "beginning of a new day." On Tuesday morning, he sought to remind Americans of his blue-collar roots with a visit to his childhood home in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where he was surrounded by supporters on the street outside who chanted "Scranton loves Joe."Inside on one of the living room walls where he grew up, he wrote: "From this House to the White House with the Grace of God," signing his name and the date "11.3.2020," before heading to Philadelphia where the campaign is hoping to drive up turnout in the final hours.Historic amount of early votesAcross the country, officials were counting the more than 100 million votes that were cast before Election Day, according to a survey of election officials by CNN, Edison Research and Catalist. Those early votes represent more than 47% of registered voters nationwide and six states crossed their 2016 threshold of ballots cast. Signs of an extraordinarily engaged electorate continued on Tuesday. In an unprecedented move, which could indicate some mail-in votes are in danger of not reaching their destination in time to be counted, a federal judge in Washington ordered the US Postal Service to start sweeping all processing facilities by 3 p.m., including in parts of battleground states Pennsylvania, Michigan, Texas, New Hampshire and Florida. Democrats had previously criticized the US Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, a Trump donor, for introducing reforms in the agency that they said could slow down the delivery of mail-in ballots.Democrats are nervous about widespread slowdowns within the Postal Service system after budget cuts and staff shortages, which has led to intense scrutiny of DeJoy's motivations. In the closing days of the campaign,...

Brittany Hill leads Catalist, a company designed to make sense of the purpose movement. She talks with Adam about the strategy she and her team employ with brands to apply purpose where it makes sense, and when to opt out. Transcript: Adam Pierno: All right. Welcome back to another episode of The Strategy Inside Everything. This show is going to be different. I think I say that every time, Jesus, but it is going to be different because we're taking a look at a new facet of strategy and some new dimension of what we're doing from a strategy perspective and from the idea of purpose. Today I have a guest, the CEO and co-founder of Catalist, Brittany Hill. How are you, Brittany?Brittany Hill: Hi, I'm good. Thank you for having me.Adam: She's dialing in from beautiful Texas. I never get to Austin but I would love to spend some time there. How is it there today?Brittany: It's actually very beautiful. Yes, we love it here in Austin. The secret's out, though, a lot of people move in here.Adam: I know. I know it's crowded. Phoenix is the same way. There's something like 300 people move in here a day. Tell us a little bit about how you got to where you are with Catalist and then I think in your case, we're going to have to explain to people what Catalist is, so people have a sense of where this discussion is going to go?Brittany: Sure. No problem. My entire career I've spent in the social impact space. I've sat in the Corporate Social Responsibility seat at various companies, entertainment foundations, and have produced various events that had social impact slants, and also set in the nonprofit seats and understand the nuances of specifically raising money from the corporate sector as a nonprofit professional. Then for the past decade-plus, have built and sold various social good consultancies that really specialized in building strategies for both the nonprofit and the for-profit side on how to work better together.I have really enjoyed working with blue-chip nonprofits, the UNICEF's, the American Hearts, the March of Dimes and World Visions of the world, and also Fortune 1000 companies.Throughout that, I really learned that there were two main challenges that we kept hearing from both our nonprofit and our corporate clients. It was really around building fruitful partnerships with each other, finding the right partners. I'm sure we'll dive into it, but the purpose is such a big part of a brands landscape and an ocular, especially in today's environment. That a brand stands for something and is no longer the exception, but the expectation. We knew that finding the right partners on both sides of the aisle was a big, big issue that we didn't feel like human capital alone was doing a really good job of solving. Also then measuring the effectiveness of those partnerships, both on the community but on the respective bottom lines. Essentially, just really answer both of your questions. That's who I am and how I've got to the place where we are. But, really why we created Catalist was to build a software platform that borrows from these online dating applications of the world to help broker really smart data-driven and methodical relationships between the public and private sectors, and then really measure what they're doing to make sure that they're valuable investments, that they resonate with key stakeholders, and that they're doing what they are intended to do in terms of supporting our communities at large.Adam: I love it. We connected when I read your-- something you had posted on LinkedIn, got shared with me. I saw how intertwined the who you are and what you're doing are. I thought, "Well, this is this is really interesting. I want to know more." Thank you for that context of how you got started. Let's start with the people listening to this show are brand strategist. They're thinking about how to change the perception of a brand or how to improve the perception of a brand, and we wrestle a lot with brand purpose.
