Welcome to Episode 269 of Spun Today, where we dive deep into personal stories of resilience, reflection, and creativity in the face of one of the most transformative events in modern history—the 9/11 attacks. Today, we are honored to have a plethora of voices sharing their firsthand experiences, each providing a unique lens on that tragic day. From David Ortiz witnessing the chaos unfold from his law firm in downtown Manhattan, to Raul Azurdia learning about the attacks from a frantic woman on the street, to Steven Almonte receiving the news during his math class—their stories paint a vivid mosaic of memory, confusion, and eventual understanding. We'll hear from Elaine Almonte, who reflects on the haunting silence of New York City post-9/11, and Janet Velez, who processes her emotions through poetry and faith. Jacey Pascasio recounts the classroom panic and subsequent days filled with fear and uncertainty, while Tony Ortiz examines how these events shaped a generation and altered the cultural landscape forever. Zoila Ortiz recounts being in high school during the attacks while Yudy Azurdia recounts the start to a typical day. Tony's father reminisces on witnessing the building of the Twin Towers when he first came to the country and sadly seeing them be knocked down. Join us as we explore not only the immediate reactions and long-term impacts of 9/11, but also how these harrowing experiences fuel creative expression, foster resilience, and inspire a collective resolve to remember and rebuild. This special episode is a powerful testament to the human spirit's ability to endure and find light, even in the darkest of times. Special thanks to: Jacey Rosa, my Father Segundo Ortiz, David Ortiz, Janet Velez, Yudy Azurdia, Raul Azurdia, Zoila Ortiz, Elaine Almonte & Steven Almonte. Lou Conter died on April 1st and was given full military honors at his funeral on Tuesday at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery in Grass Valley.
On April 1, 2024, LCDR Lou Conter, U.S. Navy (Retired) died at the age of 102. He was the last living survivor of the USS Arizona, which was sunk by the Japanese during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. His passing marks a somber milestone for a generation that courageously rose up to defend our nation and our allies. In this edition of "Veterans Chronicles," Conter shares how he joined the Navy, got assigned to the USS Arizona, and was privy to the conversations of commanders aboard the battleship. He also shares what it as like to live through the Japanese attacks that killed nearly 1,200 of his shipmates, what he was doing before and after the order to abandon ship, and the difficult work that followed. But Conter's service did not end there. He also describes going to flight school in Pensacola, Florida, just weeks after the attacks, his service as a PBY pilot in the Pacific theater, and how he survived being shot down into the ocean.Conter also shares some of his service surveilling the Soviets near Iceland in the early days of the Cold War and how the tough jungle survival course he taught turned out to be a critical asset for the Americans imprisoned at the infamous "Hanoi Hilton" in Vietnam.
Lou Conter, the last living survivor of the USS Arizona battleship that exploded and sank during the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, has died. He was 102. His story is today's KNSS Salute to Service on Steve and Ted in the Morning.

In this special edition episode of the Spun Today Podcast, you'll hear a collection of firsthand experiences, from New Yorkers that lived through the events of 9/11. Memories are fleeting and have a way of fading away into a once-upon-a-time haze that we seldom revisit and when we do, they just seem like surreal experiences. I think that an important component to history not repeating itself, is continuing to share and speak about our learned experiences. Where were you during the events of 9/11? MOVE or the MOVE Organization is a Philadelphia-based black liberation group founded by John Africa. MOVE was described by CNN as "a loose-knit, mostly black group whose members all adopted the surname Africa, advocated a peaceful but revolutionary 'back-to-nature' lifestyle. The group lived peacefully communally and frequently engaged in public demonstrations related to issues of social and economic justice.Since their founding in 1972, MOVE has been targeted by the Philadelphia Police Department. A major incident occurred in 1978, when the police unlawfully raided their Powelton Village home. This raid resulted in the imprisonment of nine group members, now known as the "MOVE 9." After this, the group relocated further west to a house at 6221 Osage Avenue. In 1985 the group made national news when police dropped a bomb on the Osage house from a helicopter. The explosion and ensuing fire killed 11 innocent people, including five children and the group's leader, John Africa. Only two occupants survived—Ramona, an adult and Birdie, a child. In addition, approximately 60 other (non MOVE-affiliated) homes were destroyed as the entire block burned.Police and firefighters standing by watching innocent people burn to death and an entire neighborhood destroyed.

Elissa was partaking in one of her favorite pastimes of Wikipedia surfing (all the cool kids do it) and she stumbled upon the page for Man of the Hole. Intrigued by the name, she read on, only to find the fascinating story of a man indigenous to Brazil who lives alone in the Amazon rainforest. He is believed to be the last surviving member of his tribe. It's unknown what language he speaks or what his tribe was called. The term "Man of the Hole" is a nickname used by officials and the media (because he digs holes to trap animals), and his real name is unknown. In this episode, Katie and Elissa dig (gettit) a bit further into this story, and consider what it must be like to live in blissful ignorance of the rest of humankind. Further reading: Last survivor: The story of the 'world's loneliest man (BBC, July 2018) Last Survivor of Uncontacted Tribe, 'Man of the Hole,' Is Spotted in the Amazon (LiveScience, 2018) Amazon's 'man of the hole' attacked by unknown gunmen (The Guardian, December 2009)
This is the 6th episode of the child sexual abuse series and one thing is absolutely clear, and that is there is a pattern of abuse; * The child is naïve * The child is manipulated in some way or the other * Perpetrators are closer to us than we think * Parenting skills have to improve - there is no shortcut to this, we have to listen more to kids and understand their psychology. We have to pick up subtle signs and know when a child is trying to tell us something, calm down and listen. * There is nothing wrong with a one on one talk with your child every now and then. This is the last survivor narration we have for this series, next week - next Tuesday to be precise, shall be the grand finale with an expert on the show. She has worked with a lot of survivors, giving therapy and psychological help to those in need.

In 1904 a Manhattan church outing descended into horror when a passenger steamboat caught fire on the East River. More than a thousand people struggled to survive as the captain raced to reach land. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe the burning of the General Slocum, the worst maritime disaster in the history of New York City. We'll also chase some marathon cheaters and puzzle over a confusing speeding ticket. Intro: In 1959 a Norwegian insulation company wrangled a three-ton block of ice from the arctic to the equator. On today’s show, the guys open it up and bounce around from conversation to conversation. They cover dogs, cats, and horses, and some of their individual pets, work through a Last Survivor type contingency plan for who would take over Pat McAfee Inc. if something were to happen to Pat, and discuss whether or not they want kids in the future and how many. Todd wants to know what the names of the horses would be for everyone in the office, which spawns a conversation about whether or not they should get into the owning horses game. They also answer some listener questions including what movie they would choose to be on set for, and the guys get into a long conversation when discussing which three TV shows they would like to bring back. To close out the show, the guys each give out some vitamin thoughts. When the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory caught fire in 1911, it was the worst workplace fire in New York City’s history. In fact, if it weren’t for September 11th, it would still hold that horrible record. In just 18 minutes, the fire took 146 lives. It was devastating, but it was also preventable. The incident inspired activists and politicians. It also encouraged workers to join unions and fight for their right to a safe work environment. Then we discuss the most famous kidnapping in American history — that of baby Charles Lindbergh. Baby Lindbergh was taken from the second story of his family home. The kidnapper left behind a broken ladder and a poorly written ransom note. The nearly two year old boy was the son of aviation star Charles Lindbergh and his wife Anne Morrow Lindbergh. The distraught parents did everything they could to get their baby back. They paid the ransom and searched high and low for their child. But it was too late… And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. Episode 18 or so and things are starting to get real. When it seems as though our nation is entering a stage of de-evolution, we are hear to restore hope. Just kidding, but it just so happens this week, we are pulling covers and entering a stage of drysnitiching that would make a confidential informant a well paid and free man. A mission to simplify life has led to the undeniable choice to no longer carry other people's secrets. If you're the type that watches Last Survivor stories wearing a light coat of Cleaning Lubricant Protectant while hand cleaning your gun and poaching catchy lines from action movies you're going to hate this one. If you plan to vote #nevertrump or #hillary4prison you won't be a fan. If you like Hawaii, you may enjoy it. Any questions or comments sickcallpodcast@gmail.com.
When US Airways Flight 1549, or “The Miracle on the Hudson,” ditched into the Hudson River on January 15, 2009, Dave Sanderson knew he was exactly where he was supposed to be. The last passenger off the back of the plane on that fateful day, he was largely responsible for the well-being and safety of others, risking his own life in frigid water to help other passengers off the plane. Despite the hazards to himself, Sanderson thought only of helping others, and emerged from the wreckage with a mission: to encourage others to do the right thing. In this Out of the Mud episode, Sanderson shares the story of Flight 1549, revealing the inner strength it took to make it through the day, and how teamwork, leadership, and state management can help overcome any obstacle.

Written and directed by Robert A. Arthur and David Kogan, the series began on the Mutual Broadcasting System, December 5, 1943, continuing in many different timeslots until September 16, 1952. Unlike many other shows of the era, The Mysterious Traveler was without a sponsor for its entire run. The lonely sound of a distant locomotive heralded the arrival of the malevolent narrator, portrayed by Maurice Tarplin, who introduced himself each week in the following manner: "This is the Mysterious Traveler, inviting you to join me on another journey into the strange and terrifying. I hope you will enjoy the trip, that it will thrill you a little and chill you a little. So settle back, get a good grip on your nerves and be comfortable -- if you can! "
