Today we turn to one of Japan's most enduring and disturbing legends, 'Kuchisake-onna', also known as 'the Slit-Mouthed Woman'.This tale of a disfigured woman who asks a chilling question has stalked schoolyards, late-night streets, and the public imagination for decades. But beneath the horror lies a deeper story - one shaped by post-war trauma, shifting societal fears, and the evolution of urban myth in a media-saturated age.We trace the legend's rise from whispered folklore to national panic, exploring how stories like Kuchisake-onna take root, why they thrive, and what they reveal about the fears we try to suppress.Text Me (this is 3rd party & I cannot respond, but I see all messages)Support the showIf you have more information or a correction on something mentioned in this chapter, email us at luke@lukemordue.com. Japanese mythology is an absolute goldmine of terrifying creatures that'll send shivers down your spine! Take the Yuki-onna, for instance – a snow woman who lures poor souls into the snowy abyss with her icy charm, only to leave them frosty popsicles. And then there's the infamous Kuchisake-onna, a vengeful spirit with a creepy mask, who roams the streets asking, "Am I pretty?" Say the wrong thing, and you'll find yourself with a sliced-up face – yikes! Let's not forget the nightmarish Rokurokubi, these sneaky folks have super stretchy necks that allow their heads to detach and float around, like a grotesque game of "catch me if you can." Japanese mythology sure knows how to crank up the scare factor.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

According to Japanese legend, Kuchisake-onna, or the Slit-Mouthed Woman, was a human woman who was mutilated during her life. Her mouth was slit from ear to ear, like The Joker in 2008's The Dark Knight. In some versions of the story, Kuchisake-onna was the adulterous wife of a samurai during her life, and, as punishment for her infidelity, her husband sliced the corners of her mouth from ear to ear. Other versions of the lore include that her mouth was mutilated during a medical or dental procedure, that she was mutilated by another woman who was jealous of her beauty, or that her mouth is filled with numerous sharp teeth. After her death, the woman returned as a vengeful spirit, or onryō. As an onryō, she covers her mouth with a cloth mask (often specified as a surgical mask or, in some iterations, a hand fan or handkerchief). She also carries a sharp instrument with her, which has been described as a knife or a large pair of scissors. She is said to ask potential victims if they think she is pretty or attractive.. If they answer “no,” she will kill them with her weapon, and if they answer “yes,” she will reveal her mutilated mouth. She then repeats her question, “Even now?” If the individual responds with “no” or screams in fright, she will kill them with her weapon. If they respond with “yes,” she will slice the corners of their mouth from ear to ear, resembling her own disfigurement. It's said that the only way to survive the encounter is to answer, “so-so” or “What do you think?” to confuse the spirit. I'll be giving you one of the most commonly told stories of the Slit-Mouthed Woman from Japanese culture. Many years ago there was a young man of 20 called Kosuke, who worked at a shop called Daikokuya in Motogikucho, Edo. Being a fresh new employee, he was asked by his boss to run an errand in Ookubohyakunincho (present day Shinjuku). He was asked to deliver a letter and wait for the reply, but the reply took a considerable amount of time. By the time he was able to return, the sun was already setting, and, to top it all off, it had started to rain. Kosuke pulled out his umbrella and lit a lantern, then put the letter in his pocket and hurried along the street back to the shop.Along the way he noticed a young woman, soaked and running along the street.. He called out to the woman and told her he was returning to Motogikucho, but if she would like to share his umbrella along the way she could. The woman stopped dead in her tracks and quickly turned around. The moment she did, Kosuke screamed and fell backwards. The woman's mouth was cut from ear to ear. Fangs jutted out, and her eyes sparkled at the sight of him.Kosuke had worried about returning to the shop late but ended up being carried back. On his arrival it was as though he had aged all at once. His teeth had fallen out, and his face had grown old. Without saying another word, he took his final breath. There were several Slit-Mouthed Woman sightings in the area at the time. It is believed that Kosuke was attacked by her based on the story he told them men who found him.Do you have a Paranormal story? Let us know we would love to feature it! This week we're exploring some South African horror and delving into The Tokoloshe. In case you didn't pick up on the accent, one of us is in fact a Saffer. Buckle in heathens, this one is a ride. We explore some of the stories around this Zulu mythological creature and some of the more… uh… interesting stories involving tokoloshes. And, of course we're all about the horror behind the horror on this podcast, so what would an episode be without something true crimey? Learn from the best: The Tokoloshe Killer: True Crime South Africa | Elifasi Msomi | True Crime with Bella Monsoon From Executed Today The Tokoloshe: Mythology and Modern Trauma The little creature with a big appetite A collection of tokoloshe stories from the Daily Sun The Obscure Film Club: Pinky Pinky: This South African horror explores real-life social horrors through a modern take on the urban myth of the nefarious bathroom monster. Reimagined as a resurrected pedophile principal who died in a fire, it's essentially a South African version of Freddy Krueger. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark: While exploring the 19th century manor, Sally accidentally stumbles across a hidden basement, where the evil little creatures lie in wait. They lure Sally to her doom with promises of being friends, when in reality, they want to rip her apart. They're ancient demons that initially fed on children's teeth, until they wanted something more substantial. They are "tooth fairies" you hope you never see. Carved: The Slit-Mouthed Woman. Japanese folklore is full of malevolent spirts, but few are as harrowing as Kuchisake-onna, the "slit-mouthed woman." Kuchisake-onna joined Sadako, Kayako, and other onryo (vengeful ghosts) on movie screens in 2007's Carved: The Slit-Mouthed Woman. Here, she's the spirit of an abusive mother who possesses other women in order to continue preying on children after death. Cry of the Banshee: Featuring Vincent Price as an evil judge who is cursed by a witch to suffer at the hands of a briefly glimpsed, devil-like sidhe –- an umbrella term for the supernatural creatures that inhabit prehistoric burial mounds across Ireland. Since the banshee is a sidhe –- the Old Irish phrase for banshee is "bean sidhe," or "woman of the mounds" -– and the creature does scream, by default, it's a banshee

Happy Spooky Wednesday! It's our third episode of our Urban Legends October and we are traveling across the world to tell you tales from Japan. Kala starts out this week with the story of Kuchisake-onna, or "Slit-mouthed woman", who has existed in folklore since the Edo period. This deadly yokai sneaks up upon unsuspecting humans to ask them a simple question that has no simple answer. Just trust us when we say you don't want to be asked. Brittany then tells the tale of Teke-teke, the spirit of a young woman who met a terrible fate and haunts many places to share that same fate with others. You can tell when she's nearby because of the tell-tale sound she makes of teke-teke-teke-teke. It could be anywhere! Even the bathroom. Apparently, it's often the bathroom. That's just rude. BONUS: Tons of Inuyasha talk. Cause we're nerds. If you're going to be in Duluth on October 23rd and 24th, be sure to visit our booth at the 2nd Annual DuluCon! Described as the malicious spirit, or onryō, of a woman, she partially covers her face with a mask or other item and carries some sort of sharp object. She has been described as a contemporary yōkai.According to popular legend, she asks potential victims if they think she is attractive. If they respond with "no", she will kill them with her weapon. If they say "yes", she will reveal that the corners of her mouth are slit from ear to ear, and she will then repeat her question. If the individual responds with "no", she will kill them with her weapon, and if they say "yes", she will cut the corners of their mouth in such a way that resembles her own disfigurement. Methods that can be used to survive an encounter with Kuchisake-onna include answering her question by describing her appearance as "average", or by distracting her with money or hard candies. A car behind you flashing their headlights. Checking the caller ID before answering the phone. Or chanting a name in front of a mirror in the dark. No one can deny the effects of urban legends in everyday life. Welcome fellow travelers to the gayus sanatorium. This is the order of the midnight roller podcast. We are your guides… Jamison and Scully! Join us at the crossroads upon the might hour as we whisper the tales of urban legends. The Italian bride: "The Italian Bride" burial site at the Mount Carmel Cemetery in Hillside holds Illinois' most chilling tale. The legend tells of a young woman named Julia Buccola Petta, a Chicago native who passed away during childbirth in 1921. When the woman was finally exhumed the body is not decomposed. The Jinn- Umm Al Duwais: Toted as one of the most famous Jinn in the UAE. She will appear as a beautiful woman to attract men and as soon they are reeled in she shapes into a terrifying figure who will eat the men she has enchanted. There is video evidence of apparent Jinn. The Smiling woman( Kuchisake-onna) A solder who is going to bed a woman who on beds the strongest or most powerful men. The Soldier arrives at the house to find that it is his home. He bursts into finding his wife sleeping with another man. He then brings his sword to her face asking if she is still pretty. He then slits his face along her lips. The legend states if you see this woman with a face covering and she asks if she is pretty. If you say “No” she will slit you with scissors. If you say yes with hesitation she will slice you. If you run away she will chase you and stab you. If you say “Yes” she is she will disappear. If you also say you are busy she will leave as well. The nuckelavee: Is a horse-like demon that combines horse and human elements. Fleshless half horse half man with yellow veins and black blood It has its origins in Scotland's Northern Isles. The nuckelavee's breath was thought to wilt crops and sicken livestock, and the creature was held responsible for droughts and epidemics on land despite being predominantly a sea-dweller. To get rid of this is by burning seaweed or cross a freshwater river. No one knows what it looks likes in the water and will not come ashore if it's raining. Gjenganger (Walking After death): They say are a hybrid of a ghost and a zombie. It has a physical body but keeps their minds and memories. The creatures are created when a person is murdered or commits suicide. This is a belief that has been around since Viking times. The creature can only turn another by waiting until they are asleep and pinching them which marks them for sickness and death. The Beijing Ghost Bus: A bus traveling at the end of its route pick up two men holding up another man in shabby clothing from the Quin Dynasty which was from1644-1911. The bus drive explains this away saying they were just actors they had no time change, The three enter the bus, and shortly after a young man and older man get into a fight and exit the bus going to the police. The police then laugh ridicule the two men after they say the men's legs never touched the floor. They did not believe the two men at all. The next morning the bus had not returned from its route. Another version of the story the bus was found three days later with three highly decomposed bodies in it. The Devil Baby of Hull House: The legend of Hull House is commonly known to the people of Chicago. A woman gave birth to a child whose father was the devil. The mother, disgusted by the child, abandoned the baby at Hull House. The owner, Jane Addams, hid the baby in the attic and raised the child. The Child died and a ghostly devilish figure can still be seen.

». Hayden brings on Cody, Nicole, Remy (his sister), and Gail (his mother) to share stories of fear and fright from around the world. Remy visits to talk about the haunting of Havisham Court by the ghostly Elizabeth Parker, who was destroyed by grief while living in that house. In fact, some say you can still see her roaming the grounds of the house, skeletal in her wedding dress. Nicole shares stories from the haunted graveyard in her Massachusetts hometown - the Quaker Cemetery, also known as Spider Gates, the eighth gate of Hell. Cody talks about the friendly, mischievous usher who haunts the Capitol Theatre in Salt Lake City, Utah. The highlight of this episode is Gail Faith and her story, “Havisham’s Goonies,” in which she recounts the time she and her friends broke into the abandoned Havisham Court house. They were possibly hunted by the ghost of Elizabeth Parker, who locked up doors and windows on them while they were in the unoccupied and haunted house. They were terrified by what happened to them that night, and by what they found at the house only a few days later. In addition, the crew shares stories and urban legends from around the world. Nicole brings in the legend of the Kuchisake-onna, or the slit-mouthed woman, of Japan. Cody talks about the chupacabra, a bizarre South American creature that kills sheeps and goats and sucks out their blood. Hayden shares the history of the island of Poveglia in Italy, a place which has a history consisting almost exclusively of various forms of death. This includes plague, lepers, mental hospitals, and so on. Travel does not take a holiday, but it does celebrate it. Scary stories come from all corners of the globe to terrify us, but by no means should that stop us from traveling. In fact, the possibility of a spooky adventure is, more than anything, a reason to keep on looking for a ghost around the corner or a fright under the hostel bed. 2:20 - Hayden introduces Cody, Nicole, and Remy in this special edition of the Travel Stories Podcast for Halloween. The four of them will be sharing spooky tales and urban legends for this Scary Stories Podcast episode. 5:42 - Hayden and Remy start telling their story about the haunting of Havisham Court by Elizabeth Parker, who was destroyed by grief while living in that house; some say you can still see her roaming the grounds of the house, skeletal in her wedding dress. 7:54 - Nicole shares stories about the haunted graveyard Spider Gates in her hometown of Leicester, Massachusetts, where you can, supposedly, speak to a spirit and enter the eighth gate of Hell. 11:53 - Cody talks about the Capitol Theatre in downtown Salt Lake City, haunted by a mischievous undead usher who likes to mess around with the crews and performers in the building. 14:07 - The crew talks about Slenderman, Stranger Things, their all-time favorite Halloween movies, and whether or not scary movies are genuine forms of entertainment. Hayden and Remy share stories from their childhood, as well. 21:49 - Hayden introduces the special Halloween story, courtesy of his mother, Gail Faith, who titled her story, “Havisham’s Goonies”.
