Elizabeth Woodson is joined by Antipas Harris to talk about another habit or value that we see the New Testament authors write about a lot - mission. This purpose filled call that all Christians have to proclaim the gospel, make disciples, and love and serve our neighbors (both locally and globally).Questions Covered in This Episode:What does it mean to live on mission as followers of Jesus, and what do we learn about this spiritual practice from the words and actions of the disciples? How do you think our call to missional living connects with the Genesis 1 creation mandate (i.e., the task of cultivating shalom)? How did the church's commitment to missional living impact their witness and growth during the first few centuries? How did it affect the culture? Why do you think we are tempted to say mission is for some people but not all? What does it look like for you to live on mission? How have you navigated some of the harder parts of missional work? Can you share one story from your work at the Urban Renewal Center where you have seen this practice of living missionally impact the people in your community and lead people to God?How do Acts, the Epistles, and the theme of mission point us to the gospel?Guest Bio:Dr. Antipas Harris is the founder and president and dean of the Urban Renewal Center (URC) in Norfolk, Virginia. He is the former founding president and dean of Jakes Divinity School and teaches courses at Old Dominion University in the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department. Police identify 13-year-old boy shot in Norcross area

A 13-year-old boy has been identified by Gwinnett County police as the teen who died after he was shot in the middle of a Norcross area street Tuesday night. Jaeden Travis was shot on Windward Lane in unincorporated Norcross, near his home. Police were called to the scene at about 5:40 p.m. on Tuesday, and found Travis laying in the street. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died from his injuries. Police are continuing to investigate who shot Travis and why they shot him, according to Cpl. William Wolfe. The Gwinnett County Police Department Homicide and Crime Scene Investigations Units spent the evening combing the area and interviewing neighbors. Anyone who has information about who shot Travis, or why they shot him, is asked to call detectives or Crime Stoppers, which lets tipsters remain anonymous. Drivers in the Lilburn area have a new place to go when they need to renew the tag on their vehicles. The Gwinnett County Tax Commissioner's Office announced a new tag renewal kiosk has been installed at the Kroger located at 300 Five Forks Trickum Road in Lilburn. It is the ninth tag renewal kiosk in Gwinnett County. Vehicle owners can use the kiosk to renew their license plate without having to wait in a line at a tag office. It will be available during the store's operating hours, which are 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. The kiosks accept debit and credit cards, and users will have to pay a small convenience fee to use them. The Tax Commissioner's Office does have 24hour kiosks at its Lawrenceville and North Gwinnett offices, in addition to the seven kiosks that are located at retail businesses.  In many ways, the city of Lawrenceville and Lawrenceville First United Methodist Church have grown and developed together, as the city was incorporated in 1821 (making it the second-oldest municipality in metro Atlanta) and the church was established just two years later. As the church celebrates its 200th anniversary this year, Senior Pastor Adam Hilderbrandt is adamant that the city and the church continue their centuries-long connection through an initiative known as “Lawrenceville First.” Lawrenceville First UMC has offered a helping hand to a number of entities in the community, including homeless shelters, food cooperatives and the schools in the Central Gwinnett Cluster. The church, which was founded in February 1823 by the Rev. William Justice Parks, is focusing on its anniversary this month, with special services each week. On the first Sunday of February, a confirmation celebration was held, and on the second Sunday of the month, Lawrenceville FUMC's community partners were invited to speak to the congregation. This Sunday , former pastor Davis Chappell — now senior pastor at Brentwood United Methodist Church in Brentwood, Tennessee — will return to preach, and a very special dedication is also planned. Hilderbrandt noted that from 1904 until 1972, the church met in the building which now houses the Aurora Theatre, which plays a role in the special ceremony.  Six Berkmar High School students were chosen to display their ceramic artwork at this year's 2023 Georgia High School Ceramic Arts Awards and Symposium. The Georgia High School Ceramic Arts Awards and Symposium is an annual gathering of ceramic artists from around the state of Georgia. The symposium consists of a Juried Student Exhibition and several hands-on workshops. The exhibition showcases ceramic art made by high school students from both public and private high schools throughout the state. The exhibition took place on January 21 at LaGrange College's Lamar Dodd Art Center and showcased art from students from 26 different schools. The GCPS students selected for this year's symposium include the following Berkmar students: ♦ Evelyn Garcia, junior ♦ Joselyn Pineda Tejada, senior ♦ Joselin Reyes, junior ♦ Kristine Vuu, junior ♦ Nayeishka Morales Collado, junior ♦ and Yolibeth Contreras, senior The GFWC Lilburn Women's Club is looking for local restaurants who want to come together and offer the community a sampling of their dishes. The club is set to host its first Taste of Lilburn event from 4 until 7 p.m. on April 29 at Salem Missionary Baptist Church's Heritage Hall. In anticipation of that event, the group is now taking applications from restaurants, bakeries and chefs to have a booth at it. Anyone who would like to apply to have a booth at the event can find the application at Taste of Lilburn dot org. Applications are now being accepted for the award-winning Suwanee Youth Leaders, a nine-month leadership program led by the city of Suwanee. The program is a community-based leadership experience that focuses on developing young leaders through structured educational programs and team-building activities. With a mission to “empower young leaders to connect inside the community and make an impact outside the classroom,” the program centers on civic involvement, leadership skills, and volunteer opportunities. Students will have the opportunity to participate in monthly learning sessions, including a two-day retreat, listen to guest speakers, attend field trips, and participate in several hands-on projects including event planning and a community service initiative. The Class of 2023-24 will begin meeting in August of 2023 with new sophomores and juniors, and will meet throughout the school year until April 2024. The city will accept applications between Feb. 15 and March 31. Eligible students will be current high school freshmen and sophomores who live in the North Gwinnett, Peachtree Ridge, and Collins Hill clusters, as well as home school and private school students who reside within those clusters. If you had told Antipas Harris when he was a child that he would grow up to write a book, he would likely have doubted you. As a boy in the deep South who grew up in a poor family and struggled with learning disabilities, he could not have imagined the paths down which God would take him. Despite the personal and structural barriers he faced, he was ultimately faithful to the tasks put before him, resulting in his writing Is Christianity the White Man's Religion?  The question came from a disenchanted millennial in his classroom, and the more Antipas engaged with students from this generation, the more he understood what was at the heart of the question, and the more he was motivated to tackle it in his book. A Billboard hit also makes a cameo in this episode, from Antipas's former life as part of a hit musical group.About the Guest:Antipas L. Harris is the president and dean of Jakes Divinity School and serves on the pastoral staff at The Potter's House in Dallas, Texas. He is an ordained minister, a theological educator, and a musician with degrees from LaGrange College, Candler School of Theology (Emory University), Yale Divinity School, Boston University, and St. Thomas University. Before being appointed to his current role by Bishop T. D. Jakes, Harris founded the Urban Renewal Center in Norfolk, Virginia, where he led initiatives that addressed the intersections of faith, justice, and community development. His objective is to help people overcome distress, reinforce faith, impart comfort through the arts, and provide stability through education. He actually expounds on his time as a foster parent and the great need for foster parents, especially for older teens. As a related side note, we recorded this back in March...before the COVID-19 panic. So that was the context that he declared he was heading to an “adoption party” the upcoming weekend. It’s a small thing, but I just wanted to clarify. Overall, it was an enlightening and inspirational interview. I even passed along the dean’s kind words about Chaplain Adam Roberts (my first guest on the podcast) the afternoon after I recorded it. He was flattered. I believe his words were “Aww, shucks.” This is yet another light behind the curtain of a rags to riches story. In this episode, we visit the Valley Health Cancer Center in Winchester, VA. When you walk through the doors of this remarkable place, you think of all the people who have found comfort here in the midst of an unthinkable struggle. Sunlight pours into the center’s two-story glass lobby. There are meditation rooms, prayer chapels, and even a healing garden where rocking chairs sit on a patio at the edge of a beautiful pond. The infusion center is positioned so that patients can look out over the garden during treatment. Before the center was built, cancer treatment in Winchester, VA took place in locations with dark hallways and crowded waiting rooms. Some had to be treated hours away from home, adding to the stress of living with the disease. Now, patients, their families, and their medical team have a place that was designed to help them find peace. The center is a shining example of the kind of impact a foundation can have on a community. I’m here to meet Kevin Callanan, the former executive director of The Valley Health Foundation and leader of the $10 million capital campaign that funded the center’s creation. A native of Virginia, Mr. Callanan attended VMI, and holds a master’s degree in philanthropy and development from LaGrange College. He served our nation for 28 years as an officer in the US Army, retiring in 2006 as a Lieutenant Colonel. During his 25-year fundraising career, Mr. Callanan has raised over $56 million for community hospitals and schools. His work with Valley Health was his biggest project to date. I wanted to find out more about the work that went into building this place, what role foundations play in supporting care delivery in our communities, and how they’re shaping the future of healthcare.

Hey, LaGrange!... So last night was kinda weird. I got a message on insta from a fan who wanted to meet up and talk about my transition from an “educator to a storyteller.” He happened to be 1/2 of the brains behind Humans of LaGrange, so I obliged. Never being one to miss an opportunity, I recorded the conversation. I intended it to be me interviewing a random LaGrange citizen for the first time in the history of the podcast, but it turned into something entirely different. After a brief introduction, I transitioned over to him because he wanted to ask me some questions and I never got control of the interview back! Obviously, I’m ok with it or you wouldn’t be hearing about it right now. I’ve often wondered what would happen if I was interviewed and didn’t have a written script in front of me, like I do right now. It turns out I repeat myself a lot. I liken it to a car stuck in the mud, rolling back and forth in the rut to get out. I need to sometimes repeat myself a few times to get my idea out. I’ve been assured it’s a common feature among survivors of traumatic brain injuries. So, I learned that I can do an interview. I learned that my charisma is somewhat coming back, with practice of course. And I learned that Hey, LaGrange! has a dedicated fan base. I’m excited for all those things! As a bit of technical issues: the interview was done outside Starbucks on the evening of 2/26/20, so there’s a good bit of road noise that’s coming from behind us. I also left the recording a bit more “raw” than usual; I didn’t delete the little conversations between questions and banter like I usually do. This was an artistic decision to fit the gritty feel of the background noise. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/HeyLaGrange/support

We will focus this week's show entirely on college football. We will be joined in our first hour, as always by our college football guru Kip Keefer. Kip and I will also be joined by the Buffalo Bad Boy Pete Tasca and Mr. Savage Burn Steve Butler. We will discuss, in the detail, Georgia's decision to fire Coach Mark Richt. Who's next at UGA? What does this say, if anything, about the state of coaching in college football? We'll then discuss the CFB Playoff rankings ahead of the conference title games this weekend. In the second half of the first segment we'll be joined by John Tures, political science professor at LaGrange College and contributor at Huffington Post Sports. In the second hour we will have an all Georgia Bulldog segment with Brian Robinson, CA Phillips, and Kirk Alexander. All three are Georgia graduates and bleed red and black. Brian is former Deputy Chief of Staff to Georgia Governor Nathan Deal. CA is an Associate Pastor at Northstar Church in Kennesaw, GA, a longtime UGA season ticket holder, and a former employee of the UGA Sports Information Department.  Kirk is a former All State TE at Parkview HS in Gwinnett County, GA and after origonally committing to play football at Wake Forest, changed and went to Athens to play for Mark Richt. Kirk is currently to President of Stoneview Sports, LLC.
