Through a focus on Spanish-speaking Catholics, Amanda Baugh sheds light on environmental actors hiding in plain sight. Drawing from ethnographic research conducted across Los Angeles, Baugh, Professor and Associate Chair of Religious Studies and Director of the MA Program in Sustainability at California State University, Northridge, demonstrates that minority communities are not merely victims of environmental problems. Instead, many Spanish-speaking Catholics embrace what Baugh calls “la tierra environmentalism,” an embodied ethic of living lightly on the Earth that is rooted in a sense of love and respect for God, fellow humans, and the rest of God's creation. A focus on la tierra environmentalism challenges scholars and activists to rethink who counts as environmental leaders and what counts as environmentalism. Series: "Ethics, Religion and Public Life: Walter H. Capps Center Series" [Humanities] [Science] [Show ID: 40423]

What is the current state of Christian philosophy in the secular university and the culture more generally? Is Christian philosophy considered an oxymoron? Or has belief in God enjoyed a renewal in academic settings, and if so, what accounts for that? We'll answer these questions and more with our guest , our philosophy colleague Dr. Greg Ganssle. We'll also talk about how Talbot's MA Program in Philosophy, 30 years going as of 2023, has tried to advance the state of Christian philosophy in the academy and the culture.Greg Ganssle is Professor of Philosophy at Talbot.  He earned a Master of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Rhode Island in 1990. He earned his doctorate in philosophy from Syracuse University in 1995, where his dissertation on God's relation to time won a Syracuse University Dissertation Award. In addition to publishing nearly three dozen articles, chapters and reviews, Greg has edited two books, God and Time: Four Views (IVP, 2001) and God and Time: Essays on the Divine Nature (Oxford, 2002 – with David M. Greg is the USS Midway Chair in Modern US Military History and the Director of the Center for War and Society at San Diego State University. Before taking the position at Sand Diego State, he spent five years just north up the California coast at Chapman University, where he was Professor of History and Director of the MA Program in War & Society. Greg earned a BS from the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he commissioned armor. While in uniform, Greg earned his MA in History from Villanova University and his PhD from UNC-Chapel Hill, working under the expert guidance of Prof. Dick Kohn. While at UNC, he was also Professor of Military Science and led UNC's ROTC program. Greg served for 26 years in the Army, retiring as a colonel. Since leaving West Point, Greg has positioned himself as one of the leading historians of the Vietnam War. He is the author of five books, including most recently Pulp Vietnam: War and Gender in Cold War Men's Adventure Magazines (Cambridge). He authored a trilogy on the American war in Vietnam with Oxford University Press: No Sure Victory: Measuring U.S. Army Effectiveness and Progress in the Vietnam War, Westmoreland's War: Reassessing American Strategy in Vietnam, and Withdrawal: Reassessing America's Final Years in Vietnam. His first book was Fighting in the Great Crusade: An 8th Infantry Artillery Officer in World War II (Louisiana State University Press). Greg's articles have been published in the major journals in the field, including The Journal of Strategic Studies, The Journal of Cold War Studies, and The Journal of Military History. He has also written for the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Los Angeles Times, among other media outlets. Greg was also an adviser to Florentine Films for Ken Burns-Lynn Novick's documentary, The Vietnam War, which appeared in 2017. We could go on, and on, and on, and even mention Greg's upcoming research Fulbright to Oxford University in Spring 2023, but we won't. You'll not find a more generous, affable, California-Hipster-dressed scholar in the military history community. We'll talk New Jersey, a grandfather's WW2 footlocker, the Beatles, gender theory, Batman (the 1966 TV series!), and much more in between. Also - special 50th-episode guest appearances! The Strong Black Woman Syndrome. For generations, in response to systemic racism, Black women and African American culture created the persona of the Strong Black Woman, a woman who, motivated by service and sacrifice, handles, manages, and overcomes any problem, any obstacle.  The syndrome calls on Black women to be the problem-solvers and chief caretakers for everyone in their lives―never buckling, never feeling vulnerable, and never bothering with their pain.

Certain words are central to our civilization, so it is good to reflect on their meaning. The most central words, such as the word liberty, often carry multiple meanings and has been the theme for debates over the centuries. The definition of and interpretation of the concept of liberty is key to the understanding of the liberal tradition, which is continuously under discussion and scrutiny. For Timbro these discussions are at the center of our interest. It is therefore a great pleasure for Timbro to host two of the most prominent participants in the debate on liberty in this week's Ideology Pod, professor Daniel B Klein and professor Helena Rosenblatt.   In this talk Dan Klein [econfaculty.gmu.edu] initially reviews four meanings of liberty, and relate those meanings to Benjamin Constant (1767-1830), Isaiah Berlin (1909-1997), and Raymond Aron (1905-1983). One of those meanings is the classical liberal meaning, centered on "others not messing with one's stuff", he says.    Helena Rosenblatt has argued recently [oll.libertyfund.org] in response to Klein's suggested interpretation of liberty “that it would be a great shame if any person calling themselves “liberal” adopted such a narrow and materialistic definition of liberty. In today's climate particularly, we need to draw on other resources within the liberal tradition to articulate and defend a more generous articulation.” Daniel Klein is Professor of Economics, JIN Chair at the Mercatus Center George Mason University and director of the Adam Smith Program. He is the author of Knowledge and Coordination: A Liberal Interpretation (OUP, 2012). He is chief editor of Econ Journal Watch.  Helena Rosenblatt, recent recipient of a prestigious Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, teaches in the PhD Programs in History, French, and Politicial Science, and the MA Program in Liberal Studies at the Graduate Center at the City Universtiy of New York. She is also a faculty member of the M.A. Program in Biography and Memoir. Her 2018 book The Lost History of Liberalism: From Ancient Rome to the Twenty-first Century has been the theme for earlier talks on liberalism at Timbro.  Björn Hasselgren introduces the talk. Björn Hasselgren is Senior Fellow at Timbro and has a PhD from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and is a Guest Researcher at the Economic History Department at Uppsala University. He arranges Timbro activities in relation to the classical liberal heritage, such as the Classical Liberal Summer Seminar.

On Tuesday, August 4th, a massive explosion rocked Beirut and sent a giant mushroom cloud into the sky. The blast, which struck the city with a force comparable to a 3.5 magnitude earthquake, destroyed much of the country’s main port, flattened and damaged hundreds of buildings, including three hospitals, and a huge number of businesses and homes. So far, 135 fatalities have been counted, 300,000 have been displaced and over 5000 have been injured. Hundreds of people are still trying to know the whereabouts of their loved ones who went missing. To get a better picture of what happened in Beirut and the economic and political crisis compounded by the covid-19 pandemic that is pushing the country to the brink of economic collapse, Shahram Aghamir spoke with Ziad Abu Rish the Co-Director of the MA Program in Human Rights and the Arts, and Visiting Associate Professor of Human Rights, at Bard College. Ziad is a 2020–21 Research Fellow in the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies at Georgetown University. His research explores state formation, economic development, and popular mobilizations in the Middle East, with a particular focus on Lebanon and Jordan. He serves as Co-Editor of Arab Studies Journal and Jadaliyya. He is also a Research Fellow at the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies (LCPS). Photo by Hiba Al Kallas

She also spearheads strategic planning for the program through curriculum development and extracurricular activities. What you'll learn about in this episode: How Cynthia came to her position from the climate side rather than from higher ed, and why she feels passionately about the many hats she wears How the Columbia University Climate and Society program came about, and why this program is so important today Why the challenge for the program is finding the right students to encourage to apply due to its narrow niche and broad audience Why one of the important tasks Cynthia has is to educate people on the program and explain its science-heavy nature despite being a M.A. program How the program's curriculum is unique and allows for many options to cater to the diverse students who are considering the program How the team works to align the program's messaging with the overall messaging of the university at the institutional level How the program taking place in New York City offers both benefits and drawbacks for students that Cynthia and her team need to be aware of Why keeping the program small and focusing on the right students with a short program has meant extremely high program completion and strong support for students What actions, tools and support Cynthia has utilized to ensure her success as a team of one, and how Zoom and Slack have been powerful resources to optimize her time Resources: M.A. in Climate and Society: http://climatesociety.ei.columbia.edu/ The Earth Institute: https://www.earth.columbia.edu/ LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/cynthia-thomson-60970a11/ Additional resources: Website: www.theundeclaredpodcast.com Website: www.upandup.agency Email: contact@upandup.agency

Better Read than Dead: Literature from a Left Perspective

Our friend and comrade Hilary Strang joins us this week to discuss Ursula K. Le Guin’s The Dispossessed (1974) and we’re talking about anarcho-communism and utopia. Hilary is the director of the MA Program in the Humanities at the University of Chicago and the co-host of the podcast Marooned on Mars with Matt and Hilary, about the works of Kim Stanley Robinson and leftism: https://anchor.fm/marooned-on-mars. The book is about the physicist Shevek and his encounters on the planet Urras, where he experiences egoizing on the part of “propertarians,” who are definitely bad guys because, you know, property. We discuss the sci-fi tradition of utopian worlds, anarchism and communism, the problems of scarcity/inequality, and the structure of the family. For more on Le Guin and utopia, we recommend Darko Suvin’s “Locus, Horizon, and Orientation: The Concept of Possible Worlds as a Key to Utopian Studies” from the journal Utopian Studies. Hey, LaGrange!... So last night was kinda weird. I got a message on insta from a fan who wanted to meet up and talk about my transition from an “educator to a storyteller.” He happened to be 1/2 of the brains behind Humans of LaGrange, so I obliged. Never being one to miss an opportunity, I recorded the conversation. I intended it to be me interviewing a random LaGrange citizen for the first time in the history of the podcast, but it turned into something entirely different. After a brief introduction, I transitioned over to him because he wanted to ask me some questions and I never got control of the interview back! Obviously, I’m ok with it or you wouldn’t be hearing about it right now. I’ve often wondered what would happen if I was interviewed and didn’t have a written script in front of me, like I do right now. It turns out I repeat myself a lot. I liken it to a car stuck in the mud, rolling back and forth in the rut to get out. I need to sometimes repeat myself a few times to get my idea out. I’ve been assured it’s a common feature among survivors of traumatic brain injuries. So, I learned that I can do an interview. I learned that my charisma is somewhat coming back, with practice of course. And I learned that Hey, LaGrange! has a dedicated fan base. I’m excited for all those things! As a bit of technical issues: the interview was done outside Starbucks on the evening of 2/26/20, so there’s a good bit of road noise that’s coming from behind us. I also left the recording a bit more “raw” than usual; I didn’t delete the little conversations between questions and banter like I usually do. This was an artistic decision to fit the gritty feel of the background noise. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/HeyLaGrange/support

The project has been featured in dozens of international and local media, including Yahoo! Willie is currently the Stan Richards Professor in Creative Advertising at SMU's Temerlin Advertising Institute, where he teaches classes related to creativity and portfolio development. ABOUT THE WE ARE ALL HOMELESS PROJECT The WE ARE ALL HOMELESS project began in 1993 due to the awkwardness I felt when I’d pull up to an intersection and encounter a person holding a sign, asking for help. Like many, I wrestled with whether or not I was doing good by giving them money. Mostly I struggled with my moral obligations, and how my own choices contributed in conscious or unconscious ways to the poverty I was witnessing. I struggled with the unfairness of the lives people are born into, the physical, mental and psychological handicaps. In my struggle, I avoided eye contact with those on the street, unwilling to really see them, and in doing so avoided seeing parts of myself. That began to change once I began asking them if they would sell their signs. My relationship to the homeless has been powerfully and permanently altered. The conversations and connections have left an indelible mark on my heart. I still wrestle with personal questions regarding generosity, goodness, compassion, and guilt. And what it means to be homeless: practically, spiritually, emotionally? Is home a physical place, a building, a structure, a house? Or is it a state of being, a sense of safety, of being provided for, of identity? I see these signs as signposts of my own journey, inward and outward, of reconciling my own life with my judgments about those experiencing homelessness. weareallhomeless.org
