From funding and oversight to policy and support, Collin helps us break down the facts, bust common myths, and better understand how this federal agency impacts schools, educators, and students across the country. Where does inspiration come from when designing a font‽ There were plenty of answers to that question from this past week, from Beast of England's Acorn reminiscing about Acorn Computers to Clothilde Bouan's Niki, which delightfully reflects artist Niki de Saint-Phalle's extensive repertoire, to DS Type's Prelo Pro taking a cue from...its own Prelo family DNA. We also find that it is a Bold Decision to name your font True Serif and that Lexia from Dalton Maag could have added a few more genres to describe it and we still would have loved its panache. In this episode of the Learning Leadership Society Report, your Host LeiLani Cauthen speaks with Carrie Doom and Michele Pulver, both with Lexia Learning. With no holds barred, Cauthen lays it on the line, asking the team from Lexia, “Why is literacy at the heart of educational equity?” According to Pulver, “Literacy is at the heart of equity because it's the foundation of everything that we ask our students to do. 85 percent of what we present to students is based in text. Kids have to be able to read to participate in classroom activities, classroom instruction, and to be ready for college and career. We know that the educational landscape is not equitable right now. We know now, looking backwards at the pandemic; it shined a glaring light on the fact that access to technology is not equal.” Doom added, “having a high-quality educator, not by chance, but by design, is critical, knowing that best practices that are rooted in neuroscience and cognitive science in the way that we teach children to read, and teaching children to read is the key that unlocks the door to opportunities across their lifetime.” Don't miss this critical podcast: get the facts.

When entering our education system as an emergent bilingual, the nuances are everything. Especially if you have an eye towards equity. In this episode of The EduJedi Report, Host LeiLani Cauthen and her guest, Javier Ruiz, Education Content Specialist – English Language Development at Lexia Learning, discuss the growing awareness of equity as we serve our emergent bilingual students (historically known as English Language Learners), and a more culturally aware mindset for learning which includes multiple accents and dialects for superior learner self-identification.

In this episode of the EduJedi Report podcast, Host and Learning Counsel CEO LeiLani Cauthen talks with Kristie Shelley, Senior Director of Emergent Bilingual Curriculum at Lexia Learning about digital learning design that is heritage-relevant. Lexia English is a K-6 product that helps promote bilingualism or multilingualism. From day one, they approached the program with an asset model, which makes it unique, seeking to honor learners first and foremost. Studies indicate that teachers talk 80 percent of the time in the classroom. Lexia flipped the model because the only way to learn a language is to actually speak the language. In order to make this happen in an interactive atmosphere, they use a technology of the speech recognition engine. And to make the learner comfortable, Lexia allowed characters to use familiar accents, yet encouraged the learner to use Academic English, which showed in their writing and reading. The unique Lexia English program is finding huge success while removing the burden from disappearing numbers of ESL teachers, and the professional grade UI/UX design is blowing the doors off competitors' offerings.

In her career as an educator and administrator in DC Public Schools, Kerri Larkin worked through a variety of challenges that affected that community. In her new role, she intends to take those experiences to a wider population of students. In this episode, Kerri itemizes the lessons learned during the past two school years and divines some best-case scenarios.Lexia Learning, a Cambium Learning Group company, last month announced the appointment of Kerri A. Larkin to the position of Senior Education Advisor, Education Partnerships, effective immediately. Larkin will serve as a thought partner and advisor for school districts across the country as they design and scale specialized academic programs based on student strength and need. She will also serve as an advisor for Lexia team members.“The addition of such a strong special education leader to our team is part of Lexia's ongoing commitment to support the needs of school districts striving to help every student to read, write and speak confidently and proficiently,” said Lexia President Nick Gaehde. “Kerri has demonstrated a clear vision for individual and team development, program execution, strategic planning and student-centered outcomes. Her insights will be invaluable to our company and our customers.”Larkin comes to Lexia from the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) where she served as Senior Deputy Chief of Specialized Instruction for five years. During her tenure, she led the implementation, facilitation and monitoring of special education services for students from age 3 through 22. As a leader in a large urban district, Larkin and her team leveraged DCPS and national data to illuminate the urgency of institutionalized racism within the special education system in order to dramatically decrease its impact on children with IEPs and their families. As a result of Larkin's innovations regarding district staff's strategic collaboration, professional development and investment in evidence-based practice, students with disabilities made double-digit gains in reading and math on the NAEP assessments. In addition, those students also showed regular annual growth in proficiency on both Partnership for the Assessment of College & Career Readiness (PARCC) evaluations and the Multi-State Alternate Assessment (MSAA).Previously, Larkin served as the Director of Academic Programs for DCPS' Office of Special Education from 2011 to 2016. Under her, District of Columbia Comprehensive Assessment System (DC CAS) exam scores increased by 10 points in a single academic year. Between 2011 and 2015, students in fourth grade made the third largest gains in the nation. Students in eighth grade made the fourth largest gains. Before that, Larkin served as a DCPS master educator, a project director for the Literacy Cooperative Partnership at George Washington University, and a teacher at Anacostia High School in Washington, DC.Larkin said, “Every single student, every single day, has the ability to read, write and speak with confidence. I am thrilled to join a team that measures success in student access to evidence-based instruction, a team that is committed to deep, sustainable partnerships with teachers, schools and systems.”

Campus Greensboro Director Lizzy Tahsuda sits down with one of the winning teams from the inaugural Next in FinTech: Community Challenge. Teams of college students from across North Carolina were asked to come up with financial technology solutions to two pressing problems, one from Cone Health and the other from Piedmont Business Capital. Thanks for joining us! This episode is sponsored by Truliant Federal Credit Union Visit Truliant here --------------------- Today's host is Lizzy Tahsuda, the Chamber's Campus Greensboro Director. --------------------- 00:58 - Lizzy starts the episode by introducing the exciting Next in FinTech Challenge and sharing details on what the challenge encompassed. A total of 24 student teams with 85 students participated in one of two challenges: one for Cone Health around tele-health access and one for Piedmont Business Capital around minority business resources. Lizzy is joined today by the winning team of the Cone Health challenge, Greensboro College students Richard, William, Lexia, and Natalie! 2:40 - Lizzy asks the students what got them to participate in the challenge. Richard explains that it was encouraged by their professor to get some real world, professional experience with companies and build their resume. William shares that the challenge was appealing because it's a prevalent, real world problem that Cone Health is dealing with, especially during COVID. 4:40 - Lizzy invites the team to share the solution they created to tackle Cone Health's technical problems. Richard details how they addressed technical literacy issues using bot technology, as well as addressing hardware concerns to build a long-term solution, by suggesting the creation of “check up kiosks” at community points so people with access issues are able to utilize tele-health resources. 6:53 - Lizzy discusses another important factor of the student teams' success - their Success Squad, made up of community volunteers! The students explain how their Success Squad mentors were an integral part of how they were able to craft a great challenge project that ultimately won them the competition. 9:00 - Lizzy asks the students what they learned about FinTech and if it's sparked an interest for them in the FinTech industry. They agree that the concept of FinTech was unknown to them before this challenge, and being involved in the workshops helped them gain an understanding of the industry and possible career paths. 10:45 - The challenge included four different industry-led workshops that went more deeply into specific aspects of FinTech - Design Thinking, A.I. and big data, blockchain and cryptocurrency, and the Future of FinTech - and the students expressed how much they learned through those workshops. 12:17 - Lizzy inquires about the one piece of advice the team would give to other students who might participate in a challenge like this. The students encourage their peers to jump on these types of opportunities, to meet and communicate often with your team, to work independently and collaboratively to see what you come up with, and use your network to build the best knowledge base that you can! 13:25 - Lizzy asks the students for their final thoughts on the challenge and the experience. Natalie appreciated the range of participants from different schools across the state, the access that they gained to community and Cone Health leaders, and Lexia expressed an appreciation for the challenge itself, as it is a very practical and applicable real-world problem that affects so many people. --------------------- Learn more about the Next in FinTech Challenge: https://campusgreensboro.org/next-in-fintech/ Watch the Next in FinTech Awards Ceremony (and the student teams' videos) here: https://www.facebook.com/events/2744168269189726/ --------------------- Remember to subscribe for new episode notifications each week.
