Quality Control in the Local Flower Supply Chain

This episode is all about quality control in the local flower supply chain.  To share some insight on this topic, Katy Beene, market manager for the Seattle Wholesale Growers Market joins us. Founded in 2011, the Seattle Wholesale Growers Market is really a frontrunner in the local wholesale cooperative model that has inspired so many flower collectives like the Philadelphia Floral Guild.  With 18 growers, thousands of florist customers, and an annual sales volume topping 2.5 million, the SWGM is moving a lot of stems!  To help educate their growers and foster consistent quality across all their products, they compiled and published a Floral Standards book.  You can purchase that book here from SWGM or we have it for sale at the Philadelphia Floral Guild.  Right now there's lots of buzz in the industry about tariffs.  Florists may be wondering if they can really trust local growers to provide the quality and the volume they are used to with imports. We feel strongly that product from the Philadelphia Floral Guild is higher quality than most imports. And, as you'll hear in this conversation with Katy, local farmers are working hard to meet demand for more volume.  Local is growing and we are excited to serve you! -- This podcast is brought to you by the Philadelphia Floral Guild, a collective of flower farms in the mid-Atlantic region selling together to florist and other wholesale buyers. We help you elevate your design work and manifest a better tomorrow with locally-grown stems.  Visit philadelphiafloralguild.com to learn more and follow us on Instagram @phillyfloralguild for regular inspiration.  Sign up for our newsletter to stay up to date on what's in season, tips and tricks for design, and the latest episodes.  Not near Philadelphia but would like to source local flowers for your business?  Check out localflowers.org and rootedfarmers.com to find a flower farm near you.   What Can Locally Grown Stems Do For Your Floral Business? Less Shrink: Without the stress of a long ride in the global supply chain, our stems are superior in quality with much less breakage and far better hydration. Less Labor: Our growers do all the work of a studio assistant, stripping stems and making fresh cuts on stems that go directly into water and never leave a water source. This means you do not have to process anything! Less Trash: There are no boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, box straps, plastic sleeves, and all the other usual trash that comes with a flower delivery from the traditional wholesaler. More Inspiration:  Designing with the seasons sparks creativity.  No two weeks are the same.  More Community:  Workign with local growers is a very personal connection.  You'll grow your community every time you buy local.

Do you find yourself utterly confused about what the roles are for a wedding planner versus an event designer and a wedding coordinator at your venue? It may feel like your on-site wedding planner at your venue isn't doing their job - but IS it their job? Listen to this super informative episode to get to the bottom of things. Our host, Jennifer Stein, dives into this subject with master destination wedding planner JoAnn Gregoli from Elegant Occasions by JoAnn Gregoli. She's been planning weddings for 30+ years and had a lot to say about what each person does and (more importantly) doesn't do. She gives us the details on the differences of a wedding planner/coordinator at a venue and what their job responsibilities are compared to a hired outside wedding planner. She also discusses what an event or wedding designer will and won't handle for your celebration. By the end of the episode, you'll be totally informed and a lot less frustrated! Plus you'll hear some war stories from the OG destination planner herself. More about JoAnn Gregoli:Planning social events was a big part of JoAnn Gregoli's life upon graduation from college. After receiving her degree in Public Relations, she joined a PR firm where she planned events for many major corporations, as well as private events for corporate clients. By far, one of her most memorable and touching projects was assisting brides who lost wedding venues after the attacks on NYC on 9/11. With the assistance of The Knot and Brides magazine, she was able to relocate over 200 brides to new venues around the city. The Association of Bridal Consultants (ABC) awarded JoAnn the title of Professional Wedding Planner and she was appointed the New Jersey State Coordinator of ABC. She completed the ABC's Course and earned the distinction of Master Wedding Planner. She was also appointed the New York Metro Coordinator for the Association. And Gabrielle and her team are no exception. On today's show, I interview Jessie Khaira, a designer of luxury Indian weddings who got started in the industry 17 years ago when she decided to rent the chair covers she had bought for HER OWN wedding.Like many creative entrepreneurs, Jessie really struggled with confidence and under-pricing her services when she was getting started. But through strategic moves and mindset shifts, she has been able to establish herself in the luxury market and charge literally hundreds of thousands of dollars for wedding design. In the interview, Jessie shares:How she went from charging $20 for one-off centerpieces to six figures for the design of entire eventsThe “aha” moment that led to her doubling her rates overnight without losing businessWhy having higher prices actually made it easier for her to book clientsHow a conversation with a complete stranger helped her get clear on her nicheJessie's story is one of resilience, I know you'll love hearing her honesty, tough love, and contagious laugh.Find Jessie on Instagram or visit her website jessiekhaira.com.Follow me on Instagram and Facebook. Education is the key to making good decisions. It’s especially hard to think of everything when one is new at an activity. Indeed, sometimes one can’t help but get an uneasy feeling that they are forgetting something or that something hasn’t been fully thought out. However, with education and proper guidance, the bride becomes more certain about her wedding and makes good decisions. In the course of our respective carriers, Tobey and I have rather enjoyed helping couples and their families achieve successful events. In this podcast, we draw on that experience. With education in mind, Tobey and I have been defining terms relating to weddings. In episode 43 Wedding Definitions Part 1 we discussed the duties and responsibilities of a Wedding Director. In Episode 44 Wedding Definitions Part 2 we define the role a Wedding Coordinator plays in the success of an event. Here in episode 45 Definitions Part 3 we discuss what a Wedding Designer does and what a Wedding Producer is responsible for. By simply understanding these terms one can gain certainty in planning their own wedding and become comfortable in their own decisions. Indeed knowledge is power. And now please enjoy Wedding Designer & Wedding Producer. Wedding & Event Podcast Episode 45 Definitions Part 3. Sincerely, Eric Zimmermann Host of Wedding & Event Podcast 626-797-1795

Since she was a little girl, Veronica Howard of Veronica Howard Events, has been a planner and coordinator at heart. She absolutely LOVES planning parties. Give her an occasion and she will start planning immediately. Ideas are endless and she strives to exceed expectations. Every detail matters, NO detail is too small! "I have planned a number of events and celebrations for friends and loved ones. I finally decided to make a career out of it. I have learned that if you are passionate about what you do, it’s not work. Creativity, Organization, Perseverance, Resourcefulness and Communication are qualities I was blessed with and learned along the way.My experience working for close friends lead me to fine tune my skills. I graduated from Coastal Pines Technical College with an Associates Degree in Culinary Arts. During my last semester, I was offered a position as a Personal Chef for a private family in Sylvania, Ga. There, I met some amazing people which subsequently landed me another position with Tasteful Temptations. I met and worked with the Owner and Executive Chef of Tasteful Temptations, Brian Justice. I worked for Tasteful Temptations as a Chef for a year and then transitioned into my dream position of Event Coordinator. The experience I gained was astounding. In my 2 1/2 years of working with Tasteful Temptations, I consumed myself with learning everything about the industry. I attained practical skills, exposure and met some incredible connections and vendors. During my time at Tasteful Temptations, I realized some demands are lacking for our Beautiful Golden Isles. Those demands inspired me to venture out and launch my very own company. My personal goal is to celebrate you! Weddings, Baby Showers, Bridal Showers, Birthday Parties, Engagements, Retirement Parties or Promotions. I love making people feel special. I absolutely love providing a WOW factor with jaw dropping elements to continue to surprise my clients along the way. Keep it simple. You're trying to pull off a very specific theme or you have a million wedding style ideas that you can't narrow down. Trends Pinterest has released their 2018 wedding reports and we are here to share them with you! PINTEREST REPORT Style Hair Food Décor Destinations ***LISTENER QUESTION*** We want to have a very traditional, Southern wedding. Are there any Southern traditions that I'm forgetting? We want to show his family from up north southern charm and hospitality and demonstrate how great it really can be down here, and how kind and loving people can be here. What are some good ways to incorporate southern hospitality into the whole experience? Here are a few southern traditions that we found some of which we thought was the norm throughout. Groom's Cake-was usually a fruitcake but now it is usually chocolate for an alternative to the wedding cake that is usually vanilla or yellow cake or does a bleeding armadillo cake ala Steel Magnolias. Your Aunt Weezer would be proud. Bridesmaid Luncheon-every southern girl knows that we ladies like to lunch so host a bridesmaid luncheon for some great time with your MOH and Maids. House Party-In addition to bridesmaids, some brides designate a "house party" of friends and family who attend all bridal activities (shower, bachelorette party, etc.) and help out with ceremonial duties on the big day, like overseeing the guest book. Pounding Party-For this housewarming party of sorts, friends and family give the newlyweds pantry staples like flour, sugar, butter, and eggs by the pound.
