This week, we've decided to cover a topic that's hugely underreported in the mainstream media: FGM. Yesterday was FGM Zero Tolerance Day, so you may have seen a (very small) flurry of articles about the topic - but this week's guests say that it needs to be covered all year round. FGM stands for Female Genital Mutilation - the deliberate cutting or removal of a female's external genitalia. It is currently documented in 92 countries around the world, the highest share in Africa - countries including Somalia, Egypt, Mali, Sudan and Ethiopia. It is also found in Asian and Middle Eastern countries, and in diaspora communities in the West. Over 200 million women globally have been subjected to FGM. This should be a media storm. But instead, there's near silence. So we've asked FGM survivors why the coverage is lacking, what they need from the media, and what we can do to help. Joining us is Dr Leyla Hussein, psychotherapist and award-winning international campaigner leading the fight against FGM, and Ifrah Ahmed, Somali-Irish humanitarian worker, activist, and founder of the Ifrah Foundation, a charity with the aim of the absolute abandonment of FGM in Somalia. A woman who was subjected as a child to Female Genital Mutilation has spoken to FRANCE 24 about the violence and torture she was forced to undergo. Leyla Hussein is a psychotherapist who now specialises in supporting survivors of sexual abuse. She grew up in Somalia, where she was subjected to FGM at the age of seven. It wasn't until she was living in London and gave birth to her first child that she realised what had happened to her. She spoke to us in Perspective as part of our coverage of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
Content warning: mentions of violence against women, rape, and assault. This episode was recorded just before the general election was announced! Register to vote here. This week, it was reported the number of Met police officers being dismissed reached a new peak. A police officer has been handed a guilty sentence for assault, after arresting and handcuffing a Black woman over an apparent bus fare evasion. And last year the Casey Review found the Met Police was institutionally sexist, racist and homophobic. Have we made any progress? And is reform possible? If one bad apple spoils the barrel... Joining Helena this week is GUEST HOST Coco Khan (Pod Save the UK) This week, we are joined by Patsy Stevenson - the campaigner, equal rights activist, and writer who was awarded damages by the Met Police after being forcibly arrested in 2021 at the Clapham Common vigil for Sarah Everard. We're also joined by Dr Leyla Hussein - psychotherapist and activist, specialising in supporting survivors of sexual abuse. She's the founder of the Dahlia Project, the first counselling service specifically for survivors of female genital mutilation (FGM), and the co-founder of Safe Spaces for Black Women. Plus, your round-up of the headlines through a Media Storm lens - we discuss the Government's new sex education proposals (have your say here), a failed crackdown on protesting, and a hidden climate headline you might have missed. One in three women will experience some sort of physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. However, women's rights experts have long argued that there are practical steps that can be taken to prevent and end the cycle of violence against women and girls - if only governments are willing to invest in them. In this episode, we'll hear from Rose in the DRC about her experience and Nisha talks to Dr Leyla Hussein, a renowned psychotherapist who provides support to survivors of sexual violence and is a global campaigner for gender rights. *A warning that this episode contains content you might find upsetting, including references to sexual violence and FGM* See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Every few seconds, a child's genitals are cut in Africa. Leyla Hussein was one of them... A psychotherapist who now specialises in supporting survivors of sexual abuse, Leyla has dedicated her life to raising awareness of FGM and supporting her fellow survivors. She is a self-proclaimed difficult woman with an incredibly powerful story to tell.

Media Storm presented by Mathilda Mallinson and Helena WadiaContent warning: Rape, sexual violence, FGMEpisode 1.3: Rape Justice: What happens to the 98%? - with Leyla Hussein and Gina MartinRead the transcript: https://mediastormpodcast.com/2021/12/15/1-3-rape-justice-what-happens-to-the-98/Authorities declined to reveal the true rape conviction figures in a Freedom of Information request by Media Storm, after we discovered that the reported numbers - which hit a record low in 2020 at 1,109 - are over-inflated. It follows Guardian revelations that 98% of rape investigations are dropped by police. But this is not an exclusively British problem. Judging by public data, US police drop 95% of rape investigations; Swedish 96%; Belgian 94%. So how do you begin to diagnose an issue that is so far-reaching? Media Storm sets off across the pond and back, sits down with national police and prosecution chiefs, and follows an unravelling battle in Parliament, to find out why the overwhelming majority of rapists walk free on our streets. We are also joined in the studio by Dr Leyla Hussein, women's rights activist and founder of Safe Spaces for Black Women, and Gina Martin, writer and the campaigner who made upskirting illegal. We discuss how the mainstream media depicts victims of sexual assault, how male-perpetrated violence litters our pop culture, and discuss the latest reporting on the case of Alice Sebold. Dr. Leyla Hussein went through her own Islamic divorce over 15 years ago, and has since spoken out about her marriage, her difficult divorce, finding happiness after divorce and ‘divorce parties'. In this episode, Kate and Leyla discuss the challenges surrounding her divorce, given her Somali and her husband's Kenyan heritage as well as why she thinks society should change the narrative around divorce through education and the promotion of healthy relationships. Leyla also discussed why she has chosen to host divorce parties as a form of celebration for her friends. Leyla is a psychotherapist, specialising in supporting survivors of sexual abuse. She is an international lecturer on female genital mutilation (FGM) and speaker on gender rights. She is recognised as one of the key experts on this issue globally and is a leading and award-winning international campaigner against all forms of violence against women and girls. Leyla founded The Dahlia Project, the UK's first specialist therapeutic service for FGM survivors. In 2020, she was elected as Rector of the University of St Andrews for a three-year term, making history as the first Black woman to hold the position. She currently works as the Global Advocacy Director and Deputy Team Leader for the Africa-led Movement to End FGM.
In this episode Alby speaks to the brilliant Leyla Hussein - a social activist and psychotherapist who is a founder and executive at numerous non-profit organisations, has a doctorate, an OBE and (finally) 12 fatwas to her name... With such rich personal and professional history, Dr Leyla OBE speaks through various different lenses in this episode. From her experience losing her father in her 20s (and not being allowed as a woman to attend the burial - the "kind of bullshit" she's fighting), to how she looks at the 12 fatwas against her, to how she approaches self-care for her grief and includes friends in those moments. This is a fascinating discussion, we hope you enjoy it
*Trigger Warning* This episode includes frequent reference to and discussion of child sexual abuse and assault. If you believe you may find that triggering or distressing, do listen to a previous episode. For those affected by any of what is discussed in the episode, you can find support links toward the end of the show notes. In this epsiode, Diggory and sex therapist mother Cate invite Dr Leyla Hussein OBE onto the podcast to talk about ‘FGM', otherwise known as Female Genital Mutilation. Leyla explains why FGM happens at all, the racist and sexist elements of societies' handling of FGM and shares staggering statistics that prove FGM is a global issue that we should all pay more attention to. Cate and Diggory also open up their mailbag to read out some sex and relationship questions from listeners like how can one feel more emotionally connected to their partner and whether it's unfaithful to masturbate after your partner has fallen asleep. Make sure you send in your sex or relationship questions to our accredited therapist Cate who will answer them on the pod! TRIGGER WARNING: Please be aware that this episode contains a detailed account of what Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) involves, which some listeners may find distressing. For more information on FGM, visit Dahlia Project. What is an activist entrepreneur? How does a traumatic experience impact your life and how do you deal with it 20 years on? Why is it so important to surround yourself with people that are honest, rather than just say what you want to hear? “We were these broken people trying to change the system.” Dr Leyla Hussein OBE wears many hats. She is best known as an activist around female genital mutilation; she is also an entrepreneur, a psychotherapist, and to use her own words, a ‘changemaker'. Leyla's conversation with Vladi and Nektarios explores how she has dealt with her emotional and psychological wellbeing at different points in her life. Leyla is incredibly honest and raw when she talks about the trauma she went through as a child (not knowing that what she had experienced was a form of abuse, until she was an adult), the stress and anxiety she has experienced and a lack of emotional support. We discuss the similarities between being an activist and a business builder and so much more. Leyla vocalises the importance of pleasure as a support mechanism, and affectionately talks about her ‘Support Bra' - the network of people she surrounds herself with, who will always speak the truth. You can find out more about Leyla's work by following her on Instagram @leylahusseinuk and @leylatherector, on Twitter @LeylaHussein @dahliaproject1 @SafeSpaces4BW @MagoolEndFGM or via her website. You are about to meet and get to know two extraordinary, passionate, committed women. Swiss filmmaker Barbara Miller* is the woman behind the powerful documentary #Female Pleasure. It follows five courageous women from different cultures as they struggle for justice and equality as they take charge of their own bodies. And one of those women is Leyla Hussein, a Somali-born, British psycho-therapist and social activist who was genitally mutilated at the age of seven. She has made it her mission to fight against female genital mutilation or FGM, as well as for the sexual determination of Muslim women worldwide. This is one empowering, moving, critically important conversation.
Leyla Hussein is a Somali-born psychotherapist and social activist who specializes in supporting young women and girls who have been victimized, usually through female genital mutilation. In this episode, we dive deep into the realities of FGM, how to shift it, and how she's managed to stay so positive and happy while seeing so much darkness. http://www.AdamRoa.com
In this episode Dr Leyla Hussein, OBE shares her journey of 17 years of being a campaigner to end FGM/C, the importance of support, inequalities of being a speaker and campaigner and why we are focusing on the the wrong thing by calling it FGM/C and why it's time to to call it what it is - a serious sexual assault against children.

Is there any truth to claim that the mother daughter relationship is more fraught than any other dynamic? Psychologist Professor Terri Apter explains how conflict can help mothers and daughters renew their bond. Mother and daughter team Sally and Sarah Kettle advocate shared experience as a way to strengthen family ties, something they found while rowing across the Atlantic together for four months, and comedian Sindhu Vee talks about the unique features of a mother's expectations. We also hear how, despite the best of intentions, many mothers can disempower their daughters in order to thrive in a patriarchy. Author and women's rights activist Elif Shafak warns about the ways daughters are taught to blend in, especially in cultures which are more gendered. Dr Leyla Hussein has had first-hand experience of female genital mutilation, and explains how women have become the foot soldiers of a patriarchal system that promotes such practises. Writer and matriarchy scholar Vicki Noble describes how the mother daughter dynamic is different in societies where women wield power, and life coach Kasia Urbaniak, who teaches women the foundations of power and influence, explains what a mother can do to empower her daughter. At the age of 7, Leyla Hussein was a victim of FGM, Female Genital Mutilation, which is when the female genitalia is partially cut or totally removed and the remaining skin is sown together. In her participation in the College Freedom Forum 2018, she shares her horrible experience, some statistics, her awakening and the movement she has created to bring attention to this topic. 200 million girls and women from all over the world are at risk each year from undergo FGM, Hussein says. She herself became aware of the topic after her first pregnancy, where Jennifer Bourne, a nurse, explained her that the reason she was passing out every time she was examined was because her body still remembers the trauma. By the time this forum is actually finished 4,000 girls will undergo FGM. We are not talking about small numbers”. Her principal work as a psychotherapist is to create safe spaces for survivors of FGM. The Dahlia Project, a health advocacy project, is a counseling service where women realize that their experience is an abuse. FGM is not a cultural practice. FGM is fundamental to control women’s sexuality, to oppress women… It’s a process of grooming, that itself is another form of abuse”. FGM is a global issue. It happens in the US, Russia, Colombia, and Africa. Young people play a great role in this, she says, women must stand up and speak up. She introduces some of her fellow sisters that fight with her on a daily basis: Meron Estefanos, Deeyah Khan, Mona Eltahawy, Zineb El Rhazoui. The reason I do this work it’s because of my daughter. I want a world where every single girl can be free and safe. “ Don’t miss Leyla Hussein’s story and share this video to draw attention to FGM.
Leyla Hussein is a leading campaigner against FGM, which stands for “female genital mutilation.” She has lived in Britain for many years but started out in Somalia – where she herself underwent this brutal practice. When UK playwright Charlene James wrote Cuttin' It in 2014, she meant it to be the starting point for conversations about Female Genital Mutilation. Although illegal in UK since 1985, FGM is still being practiced on young girls. Cuttin' It toured a number of secondary schools in London and Birmingham for a month earlier this year. The play won the George Devine Award for Most Promising Playwright in 2015 and the Alfred Fagon Award for Best New Play in 2014. This time round, it was staged by the Young Court at the Royal Court Theatre in London. Romana Flello, the Young Court manager, felt it was important to raise awareness about the issue of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) as well as violence against women and girls. Furthermore, FGM is on the curriculum on the schools' programme. Each school visit involved a pre-show workshop followed by a post-show Q&A with the pupils led by Flello. Playwright Charlene James insists that FGM is not only practiced in Somalia even though the characters in her play are two Somali teenagers from Kismayo living in Britain. "This is not just happening in Africa, Indonesia or those far away places that we can just off from. It's happening in this country, in cities like Birmingham, London, Glasgow," says James. It was while watching a documentay by Leyla Hussein, the Cruel Cut that James first became aware of FGM. "This one [issue] just got to my gut really and I just felt like I needed to speak about it." Cuttin' It is also about the multi-layared identities of children of immigrants. Something James is familiar as her parents came from Jamaica to settle in Birmingham. "You are trying to assimilate into a country that your parents weren't part of. You want ot embrace your culture but you might not fit in. I think it was important to show how do you have those dual identities and how you are juggling that. There is that clash which I think is really interesting of how those two marry together and FGM is one of those things" explains James. She is a prominent, fearless, and also, frankly, delightful campaigner against this. With Jay, she talks about different angles of FGM. You know what class of people she has taken the most flak from? White liberal women. Treat yourself to this... Source

Nimko is the co-founder of Daughters of Eve - alongside Leyla Hussein - a non profit organisation, that works to advance and protect the physical, mental, sexual and reproductive health rights of young people from female genital mutilation practising communities. They recognise that (FGM) is a form of gender-based violence. Daughters of Eve believe that young people need to be supported holistically and work with women and girls and give them specialist support. In 2014, Daughters Of Eve received an award at the Red Magazine Woman of the Year awards for their work. They were also placed sixth in the Woman's Hour Power List. We recorded this is quite a busy coffee shop in Notting Hill and Nimko shares a lot about her life and work. We chatted for well over an hour so I’ve split this episode into 2 parts so this is the first part. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
