In 1989, Cameron Crowe's Say Anything became an iconic 80s romance that captured the awkwardness and sweetness of young love. The story follows Lloyd Dobler, a charming high school grad unsure of his future but knows he wants Diane Court, the smart yet emotionally distant valedictorian. This isn't your typical romance—Lloyd isn't the usual leading man, and Diane isn't the stereotypical love interest. Instead, the film subverts expectations to deliver a heartfelt, unconventional love story that still resonates today. Join Tim Williams and guest co-host Bethany Wells as they dive into this classic on the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast! Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: Lloyd and Diane's school appears to be based on The Lakeside School, a very prestigious private school in Seattle. But in the film, the school is called Lakewood and has a rooster, not a lion, as its mascot. The dojo featured in this movie was also used in "The Karate Kid" (1984). Fox gave the green light for producers to adapt "Say Anything" into a single-camera TV sitcom that would have taken place 10 years after the movie's ending. But the show's creators never bothered to ask original writer/director Cameron Crowe if he was interested. Once Crowe heard about the project, he was dismayed and expressed on Twitter that he had no involvement "except in trying to stop it." John Cusack also cried foul about the project; the backlash from the fans was too much to overcome, so the project was canceled.Sources: Wikipedia, IMDB, Box Office Mojohttps://www.pajiba.com/seriously_random_lists/mindhole-blowers-25-facts-about-say-anything-that-are-neither-bought-sold-nor-processed.phphttps://www.mentalfloss.com/article/73152/14-surprising-facts-about-say-anythinghttps://awardswatch.com/say-anything-at-35-how-a-boy-a-boombox-and-a-dream-turned-into-a-timeless-classic-retrospective/https://www.slashfilm.com/1497085/only-major-actors-still-alive-say-anything/Some sections were composed or edited by ChatGPT We'd love to hear your thoughts on our podcast! Back from the New York Premiere of The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Jay gives a brief talk about humanity before answering viewers questions about his experience on the “Pink Carpet.” Before diving into the ups and downs of his premiere experience, Jay visits, as usual, the apostle Paul and discusses what Paul has to say about our humanity and also talks about how we can live a life that is based in reality - where we can recognize the hypocrisy in our own lives and the things we do to fill the ‘lack within us.' He discusses the idea of “falling short” and how the need for grace is actually good news! - Then after a brief technical hiccup, Jay engages with viewers to discuss the music his sister Tammy made for the movie and how proud he is of her and how it encouraged him to not give up. He gives us the rundown on meeting Vincent D'Onofrio, shares how Jessica Chastain became his Lloyd Dobler, and tells us about a moment where he lived his truth. Also, how he drank a ton of Diet Coke…and maybe might have stolen a prop from the movie, but shhh, don't say anything. Tread Perilously's annual Star Trek month continues with a rare visit to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Unfortunately, it's for one of the program's worst hours: "Let He Who Is Without Sin..." Dax and Worf's vacation to pleasure planet Risa is disrupted by Bashir, Leeta, and Quark deciding to come along, Worf's bad attitude, and the extremist Essentialist Movement who believe places like Risa are making the Federation "soft." When Worf reads one of their pamphlets, he conflates his current personal problems with Dax as an element of the phantom menace proposed by the Essentialists. Will he help them cause ecological harm to the galaxy-famous vacation world? Erik is stunned to discover Gerd Shockley is, indeed, in the episode as the leader of the Essentialists. A scene of The Emissary and Odo chatting at the Replimat leads to a surprisingly long digression. The Duras Sisters start an OnlyFans page. The Warriors gets praised while its unfortunate Director's Cut gets panned. Worf's behavior leads to a discussion about jealousy and negative emotions. Lloyd Dobler's Disease gets outlined and Justin once again lauds Cobra Kai. He also reveals one of the reasons for this DS9 episode failing while still holding his favorite Star Trek TV writers accountable. Gerd's opinion of Bajor becomes clear and Erik declares Ross from Friends is the only other character who could screw things up as badly as Worf does here.

As you're quickly becoming aware, We, in our little Ashtanga Yoga Land, have a culture. This word stems from the Latin meaning “to cultivate or to toil over.” And, this cultivation of the soil, slowly became a cultivation of the mind. This is were we get the word ‘cult' from... which is to say, “cultivated, or inhabited.” In a way, our work in yoga, leads our mind to become inhabited. We become Self-possessed. Without really sitting down to talk with Casey Palmer before now, what we noticed immediately, is that we share a common experience and culture. In fact, meeting him in this podcast was like meeting a family member, a twin, a lost older brother. Something akin to when Arjuna meets Karna for the first time and recognizes him immediately. Casey is a ‘Gen-Xer' — a punk, ‘Do-It-Yourselfer.' Fiercely independent and skeptical of hierarchies and monetization of that which is pure and authentic. You see, we Gen-Xers often adhere to this ethos in spite of ourselves — we're armed and ready to cut off our nose to spite our face. Why do we do this? Well, let me introduce you to Lloyd Dobler. The quote from the movie, Say Anything, “I don't want to produce anything sold, bought or produced” is so woven into the fabric of our personality that Harmony and Casey didn't even register it as a pop culture quote (and really, what could be more Gen-X?) - It is simply who we are. As the Buddha says “Nothing is permanent, except change” Please sit and listen to a fascinating discussion on a number of different topics like the culture in Mysore, holding multiple frames of consideration for Pattabhi Jois, growing up in Alaska, leading a yoga community as as an anarchist collective, and whether we can really hold onto anything for more than a passing moment in time. Or as Lloyd Dobler, our fearless Gen-X archetype says, “I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. I just want to love your daughter, and I think Kickboxing might be the sport of the future.” As we all now know… Lloyd's vision has come true. For insights delivered to your inbox beyond the spoken word, subscribe to our MoneyNeverSleeps newsletter right here on Substack. Top soundbites include: Pete's description of "the Trilogy" in the context of Elaine's career: "Your experience with the innovation lab at Citi, then onto Currency Fair, and then starting PocketWire I likened to someone going from Cadbury, then onto Butler's and then Godiva on the path to a chocolate addiction - you’re spending more of your own money but it just tastes so good." On Elaine's past experience working in an innovation lab: "One thing we did a lot of in the innovation lab was look at startups and the startup ecosystem and the startup mentality and how you can replicate that in a large company, which is really hard to do. There’s much more to startups and being agile than just saying I’m going to put a scrum or an agile framework around how we do things." On her move into Starling Bank: "The trilogy - everything I had built upon with Citi, CurrencyFair and Pocketwire - is what opened the door into Starling for me." On her experience so far with Starling Bank: "It’s been an absolute baptism by fire. We’ve gone from writing policy and procedure and designing what the bank would look like in Ireland to just doing it by answering customer queries at two in the morning for the UK business. This is really helpful to us when we go live because I’m dealing with customers on the front line and getting real issues that are even more compounded by the pandemic. " On her analogy between the London Underground and big bank technology: " The rest of the world above the ground is modernising and the tube is trying to serve passengers and run on this old network of tunnels, and while they’re upgrading it’s hard to make that complete change because it’s just so far down underground and so complex." Random links include: Pete's opening reference to Lloyd Dobler and a clip from Say Anything as an analogy to the circuitous startup conundrum of product, customers and funding. Don and Chuck may disagree on which John Cusack movie stands as his best, but one thing is for sure: both films can teach us a lot what does and doesn't belong in a healthy relationship. As an added bonus, hear Chuck rail against Rob Gordon's repugnant personality! Lloyd Dobler would be disappointed, Rob. There's 80's fashion, man-perms, Reebok Pumps and Lloyd Dobler's trench coats; 80's drinks (kamikazes!); 80's music icon Prince, and the story of Dave's first mugging before one of his concerts in Detroit. We also cover the true greatness of the Bad Boys, how they were so much more than just a nasty, defensive team, how they were ROBBED of a third title in Game 7 against the Lakers, and how, even after all these years, they should have shaken hands after being vanquished by the Bulls. There's also NFL and Georgia Bulldogs draft talk, Kim's high school connection to the Bulls dynasty and Ally's fabulous new catch phrase.

We’re here to swoon over the awkward, scruffy stray puppy charm of Lloyd Dobler and rip his evil, misogynist twin Rob Gordon to shreds. It’s fascinating watching these two movies back to back; while Cameron Crowe gives us high school love in its purest, most earnest form, Cusack and his writing partners find no redemption for Rob, a total villain and wretched man who learns nothing in 2 hours and change. Say Anything is a pretty impressive directorial debut for Cameron Crowe. Not only does it establish all of the hallmarks we now associate with his films, it also does so with more confidence than you usually see with a lot of first-time directors. Crowe's not taking his awkward first steps as a filmmaker. He pretty much hit his stride right out of the gate. Which is not to say there aren't aspects of this that seems a little awkward in retrospect. One of us had never seen this before and so there were a lot of things the other two had always taken at face value that were suddenly being called into question. Topics include: Crowe's process of finding his films during the editing process and the pros and cons of that approach, the backlash against characters like Lloyd Dobler in the current cultural landscape and whether or not he's a deserving target, our humiliating break-up stories, your most elaborate romantic gestures, real life retweets, and much much more!
