Writing allows us to be visible. We write to say we are present in the world. Our lives and stories matter.Today on the Black Women Rising Podcast, we sat down with Chyrel J. Jackson and Lyris D. Wallace, avid lovers, readers, and writers of African American Literature. In this episode, these sisters talk about how they developed their love for reading and writing, their passion for the culture, standing in their truth through their writing, and so much more. Throughout this conversation, you can hear their love for writing and their love for one another.Key Discussion Points From This Episode Include:[00:02:31] - Developing the Love for Reading and Writing[00:05:38] - Sharing the Work With Others[00:09:39] - Passion for the Culture[00:12:47] - The Sister Give Their Top 3 People They Wish to Have a Conversation with From the Past[00:17:58] - Getting Into Poetry[00:21:34] - Inspiration to write[00:23:23] - Standing in Truth While Writing[00:25:42] - Doing One Thing Differently[00:28:44] - Choosing What to Believe About Yourself [00:38:15] - Poems: The Other Half of Myself/Impetus[00:45:11] - Advice For Other Writers[00:48:00] - Chyrel and Lyris' Take on Black Girl MagicChyrel J. Jackson and Lyris D. Wallace are avid lovers, readers and writers of African American Literature. They grew up in a Southern Suburb of Chicago, IL. Country Club Hills. As young girls they read Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, and Judy Blume novels. College was the real scholastic awakening introducing these two Literary Enthusiasts to the Literary works of theirgreat ancestors: James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou and others. These writers influenced Chyrel and Lyris so much. It only makes sense that they would now be writing in the Spirit of these ancestors. Giving a voice to social issues that plague our modern time.Their latest self-published works are books of poetry: Mirrored Images and Different Sides of the Same Coin. Both Books mirror messaging “no pun intended.” Ranging from a host of life topics: relationships, frayed familial dynamics, juggling life, single parenting, racism, etc. Some have said, our books are reminiscent of Harlem Renaissance revisited. Our anthologies of poems pair current social and living conditions with poetic verse. In this volume the sometimes darker sides and motives of human nature are also addressed.Where their first collection of poems Different Sides of the Same Coin revisited Harlem Renaissance and collided with 2019 social unrest, Mirrored Images rips off the bandages of human life experience. It forces one to see what most are happier pretending just does not exist at all. Broken, hurt people, hurt others. Spoken word is back and these literary writers take social justice and unrest to brand-new unchartered heights.Writing allowed Chyrel and Lyris to find their voice. Surviving a deadly pandemic, navigating life's rough waters, and continuing to stay true to themselves birthed their latest book Mirrored Images. Can magic be recreated for a second time? The sisters believe that it can. We write about what we know. Our experiences as black women are what we know well. Our writing is lensed from that intrinsically authentic experience.Connect with Chyrel and Lyris:Website: https://sistersrocnrhyme.com/ Link to All Other Platforms: https://sistersrocnrhyme.com/about/ Books: https://sistersrocnrhyme.com/read-our-books/ Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/BlkWomenRising)

Mirrored Images From Amazon: "Two sisters and authors are back with their follow-up sequel Mirrored Images. This is where their story in Different Sides of the Same Coin left off. In this poetic adaptation Chyrel J. Jackson and Lyris D. Wallace attempt to navigate the pouring rains of life conditions as they tell their tale in poetic contemporary modern verse reflecting on present day social and political events facing the Black community. In this heartrending collection of poems, the sisters further deal with life as it unfolds as they try to arrive to a collective center of peace and understanding. Mirrored Images is a written meditation about people's sometimes darker actions and motives. We journey with these ladies as they honestly tackle racism, frayed familial dynamics and embracing a sister bond that has proven to be impenetrable. This time around Blues is the preferred backdrop of their gripping tale. Prepare to be wowed beyond expectation as these writings and poems deliver more of everything you loved in book one while remaining authentically true to their soulful and riveting narrative as Black women. Where their first collection of Black Expression revisited Harlem Renaissance and cashed with 2018-2019 social unrest. In Mirrored Images they rip the bandages off human life experience and force you to see what most are happier pretending just does not exist at all. This podcast interview focuses on product innovation that has the power to help marketers to build the meaningful relationships with the right companies. My guest is Riaz Kanani, Founder and CEO of Radiate B2B.Riaz is a mix of marketer, technologist and entrepreneur who worked with cutting edge technologies throughout his career, whether it be the nascent flash/java video space in the early 2000s to combining email, mobile and social media marketing technologies in 2008. Throughout it all, he’s used data as the backbone behind these technologies to better understand how people behave and use these new approaches. In that journey he founded 6 companies and worked for IBM, Lyris, Alchemy Worx and Profusion. He’s also a mentor at Techstars.Today he’s helping to build a better way to do B2B Marketing that increases both average contract values and the speed of closing contracts. And this resonated with me, and hence I invited Riaz to my podcast. We explore what’s broken in marketing automation and why the answer is in choosing a different approach, not in more tools. We also discuss what it takes to succeed in B2B software, and what decisions and mindsets are fundamental to stand out. Here are some of his quotes:It became really clear when talking to those companies that we've become in the b2b or business marketing space, very reliant on content and events to drive lead acquisition, nurturing, email marketing obviously as well. Basically, we were all reliant on exactly the same things, and b2b marketing would become homogenous. And the only way to stand out was really to be doing better creative. And I think that's a marketer’s worst nightmare.I felt that there had to be a better way.The more I looked at it, the more I realized that if you were building a marketing automation company today, you wouldn't build a platform that looked anything like the marketing automation platforms that exist today.During this interview, you will learn four things:That there’s no nice handbook that tells you exactly what’s going to happen with your software business: so, to succeed it’s your duty to hire people that can think on their feetWhy your marketing will become exponentially better if you start thinking about the world as being a list of companies that you build relationships withHow defensible differentiation can be created by blending a strong product with an irresistible business model. That your decision how to position yourselves in a space can create a significant problem around your messagingFor more information about the guest from this week:Riaz KananiWebsite Radiate B2B See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Do you know what it means to be a big beautiful woman? When I met Twyla Turner, my first thought was that she had this big bright personality. She laughed with her eyes and she stood out in a room. One of the cool girls.I mean look, at one event we attended together, a male cover model saw her and thought she was so beautiful that he asked her to do a photo shoot with him, pool-side. I took the pictures! So, yeah, there's that...is my jealousy showing?!This is a short excerpt from Twyla's most recent book, Rock the Curves, "Lyris almost chuckled to herself at how brain-washed everyone was in Lala Land. She loved her full body. She thought is was beautiful. Strong and capable. And anyone who didn't see it was drinking the kool-aid." I love this!As Twyla and I chat about body image, world travel and multi-cultural Romance, I shared with her how much her characters reminded me of my own childhood. She and I may have traveled the world in different packages, but our conversation showed me just how similar we all truly are in this world. We might believe ourselves to be different and, yes, in many ways we are, but in so many ways we're very similar. A part of be believes if Twyla and I had grown up in each other's shoes our experiences would be so different, but then, we wouldn't be us. It would've been super cool to have known her when I was younger, we would've set the world on fire because, I think, we both would've figured out a lot earlier in life that we're both beautiful women, regardless of the package.Join us, and don't forget to follow my #YouTube channel.

Our guest on this episode of the Early Accountability Podcast is Lyris Green, a DJ in the Atlanta area. Early on, her dad instilled and encouraged in her a love for music that has remained a passion throughout her life, even when it was not her profession. After her father’s passing, Lyris grew in her relationship with God and she felt that it was time for her to leave her job in public service to be a DJ full-time, grounded in her faith. She now knows that she is exactly where she needs to be, and she constantly speaks affirmations to herself in the midst of the ups and downs of life. By cultivating her God-given gift in the area of music, Lyris is able to give that gift to the world and be confident in her role as a female in the industry. She urges others to pursue their passions with confident faith and make the best decisions for themselves, trusting that they can do anything they set their minds to. Topics Covered in this Episode: • Having the courage to pursue your passions • Following the leading of God and your intuition • Being confident as a female in a male-dominated industry

Pacific (Grove Press) Tom Drury's depictions of the stark beauty of the Midwest and the futility of American wanderlust have earned him comparisons to Raymond Carver, Sherwood Anderson, and Paul Auster. His new novel, PACIFIC, marks a triumphant return to the characters that launched his career two decades ago in the fictional Grouse County, Iowa, the setting of his landmark debut, The End of Vandalism. When fourteen-year-old Micah Darling travels to Los Angeles to reunite with the mother who deserted him seven years ago, he finds himself out of his league in a land of magical freedom. He does new drugs with new people, falls in love with an enchanting but troubled equestrienne named Charlotte, and gets thrown out of school over the activities of a club called the New Luddites. Back in the Midwest, an ethereal young woman comes to Stone City on a mission that will unsettle the lives of everyone she meets—including Micah's half-sister, Lyris, who still fights fears of abandonment after a childhood in foster care, and Micah's father, Tiny, a petty thief. An investigation into the stranger's identity uncovers a darkly disturbed life, as parallel narratives of the comic and tragic, the mysterious and everyday, unfold in both the country and the city. A portrait of two disparate communities united by the restlessness and desperate hope of their residents, Drury's haunted souls, adrift between promise and circumstance, reveal our infinite capacity to “get in and out of trouble in unexpected ways” and still find a semblance of peace at the end. "As in his previous masterful novels, Drury weaves carefully metered sentences, deeply felt scenes, and struggling characters into an endlessly entertaining tapestry of human comedy and small-town living."—Jonathan Fullmer, Booklist “Reading Pacific makes me once again fall in love with Drury's words, and his perception of a world that is full of dangers and passions and mysteries and graces.” —Yiyun Li Tom Drury's fiction has appeared in The New Yorker, Harper's, and Mississippi Review. He is the author of The Driftless Area, The Black Brook, and Hunts in Dreams. Drury was raised in Iowa and lives with his wife and daughter in California.
