This week I'm chatting with Caroline Zimmerman, Director of Data Products and Strategy at Profusion. Caroline shares her journey through the school of hard knocks that led to her discovery that incorporating more extensive UX research into the data product design process improves outcomes. We explore the complicated nature of discovering and building a better design process, how to engage end users so they actually make time for research, and why understanding how to navigate interdepartmental politics is necessary in the world of data and product design. Caroline reveals the pivotal moment that changed her approach to data product design, as well as her learnings from evolving data products with the users as their needs and business strategies change. Lastly, Caroline and I explore what the future of data product leadership looks like and Caroline shares why there's never been a better time to work in data. Highlights/ Skip to: Intros and Caroline describes how she learned crucial lessons on building data products the hard way (00:36) The fundamental moment that helped Caroline to realize that she needed to find a different way to uncover user needs (03:51) How working with great UX researchers influenced Caroline's approach to building data products (08:31) Why Caroline feels that exploring the ‘why' is foundational to designing a data product that gets adopted (10:25) Caroline's experience building a data model for a client and what she learned from that experience when the client's business model changed (14:34) How Caroline addresses the challenge of end users not making time for user research (18:00) A high-level overview of the UX research process when Caroline's team starts working with a new client (22:28) The biggest challenges that Caroline faces as a Director of Data Products, and why data products require the ability to navigate company politics and interests (29:58) Caroline describes the nuances of working with different stakeholder personas (35:15) Why data teams need to embrace a more human-led approach to designing data products and focus less on metrics and the technical aspects (38:10) Caroline's closing thoughts on what she'd like to share with other data leaders and how you can connect with her (40:48) Quotes from Today's Episode “When I was first starting out, I thought that you could essentially take notes on what someone was asking for, go off and build it to their exact specs, and be successful. And it turns out that you can build something to exact specs and suffer from poor adoption and just not be solving problems because I did it as a wish fulfillment, laundry-list exercise rather than really thinking through user needs.” — Caroline Zimmerman (01:11) “People want a thing. They're paying for a thing, right? And so, just really having that reflex to try to gently come back to that why and spending sufficient time exploring it before going into solution build, even when people are under a lot of deadline pressure and are paying you to deliver a thing [is the most important element of designing a data product].” – Caroline Zimmerman (11:53) “A data product evolves because user needs change, business models change, and business priorities change, and we need to evolve with it. It's not like you got it right once, and then you're good for life. At all.” – Caroline Zimmerman (17:48) “I continue to have lots to learn about stakeholder management and understanding the interplay between what the organization needs to be successful, but also, organizations are made up of people with personal interests, and you need to understand both.” – Caroline Zimmerman (30:18) “Data products are built in a political context. And just being aware of that context is important.” – Caroline Zimmerman (32:33) “I think that data, maybe more than any other function, is transversal. I think data brings up politics because, especially with larger organizations, there are those departmental and team silos. And the whole thing about data is it cuts through those because it touches all the different teams. It touches all the different processes. And so in order to build great data products, you have to be navigating that political context to understand how to get things done transversely in organizations where most stuff gets done vertically.” – Caroline Zimmerman (34:37) “Data leadership positions are data product expertise roles. And I think that often it's been more technical people that have advanced into those roles. If you follow the LinkedIn-verse in data, it's very much on every data leader's mind at the moment:  how do you articulate benefits to your CEO and your board and try to do that before it's too late? So, I'd say that's really the main thing and that there's just never been a better time to be a data product person.” – Caroline Zimmerman (37:16) Links Profusion: https://profusion.com/ Caroline Zimmerman LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/caroline-zimmerman-4a531640/ Nick Zervoudis LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nzervoudis/ Email: mailto:carolinez@profusion.com

Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts

This is the weekly newspaper column. When to decant 2-23-2022Newspaper readers and online followers know of my advocacy of decanting—pouring wine into a vessel to expose it to air to soften tannins and encourage wine to “open up” and become more balanced.Same time, decanting is not a panacea for flawed wines, often is unnecessary, and potentially can harm some wines. So, what is a wine drinker to do?Think of the inveterate inventor Thomas Edison. The holder of 1,093 patents had an unusual method of evaluating potential employees. He presented soup to the job applicant.Thomas Edison (goodfreephotos.com)Edison carefully observed when soup was served as part of a larger meal. If the job seeker immediately applied salt and pepper, he was rejected. If he tasted the soup first, he had an employment chance.Edison reasoned he did not want employees who relied on assumptions and preconceived notions. Edison believed a lack of curiosity and an unwillingness to ask questions and test a situation was not the trait of an inventor. How could you know if seasoning was needed if you had not first tasted the soup? And so it goes with wine and decanting. Pull the cork or twist off the cap, pour, give it a swirl, smell, and taste. If it is a little tight and tannic, give it some more swirls and a few minutes in the glass. If the wine still has not come around, pour the wine into a decanter and let oxidation do its thing. The majority of the value and mid-level wines you drink do not need to be decanted. If you buy multiples of the same bottle or have certain go-to wines you drink regularly, you likely know before opening which wines are fine on pop-and-pour and which benefit from decanting, especially if you experimented.Older wines may benefit from decanting to avoid gritty sediment in the glass, but such wines do not fare well with prolonged exposure to air. Decant and drink them right away.Decanting can do wonders for wine when needed. It is unnecessary when not needed.Tasting notes:• Plungerhead Old Vine Zinfandel, Lodi 2018: Profusion of ripe red fruits, 16% of which is parade of non-zin that gives this unexpected depth and complexity. $13-15 Link to my review• Sanford Rosé of Pinot Noir, Sta.

I read and blather about "The Economics of the Gift", an essay I wrote for an interdisciplinary conference and book on "Gift Giving and the 'Embedded Economy' in the ancient world". Part of a planned multi-part series on "reading old stuff I wrote and seeing how much I cringe". Full essay is HERE Ties in with - Profusion data podcast Christmassy special - EA forum post: seeing the effects of your donation From the essay abstract: This essay broadly considers gifts, giving, and gift economies, modern and pre-modern, from a mainstream (and behavioural) economics perspective. I present a selective survey of the literature focusing on six key points: 1. Commercial transactions sustained by reputation are not easily distinguishable from gift exchange economies; 2. Gift-giving allows the giver to accumulate goods that cannot be purchased commercially; 3. When the giver retains some use, experience, or control over the gift, she shares in the consumption of it; 4. Considering behavioural issues such as regret aversion, gift-giving may offer overlooked efficiencies that may balance out the deadweight losses from ‘inadequate gifts'; 5. Aggregate (anonymous) giving can be an important signal of overall group identity and character; 6. Historical modes of ‘giving under pressure' offer insights for modern public policy and philanthropy --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/david-reinstein/message

This week on Down the Garden Path podcast, landscape designers Matthew Dressing and Joanne Shaw take a look at salvias and speedwells, the colourful and resilient staples of the perennial garden. Tune in and learn more about how to include salvias and speedwells in your garden. Perennial Salvias (also known as “sage”) are a must-have for the garden border, blooming early summer to autumn! Planted in the spring, these aromatic beauties are great for cutting and beloved by bees and butterflies. They are drought-tolerant, too. Surprisingly, they are in the mint family and also related to the kitchen herb, garden sage. They grow well across many zones and are available in different shades of purple, pink and white. As an added bonus, they stay upright without splitting in the center. Matt and Joanne discuss: The growing conditions: soil, temperature, zones, lighting and watering Blooming: type, when and for how long and the colours Use and value to the perennial garden Cultivars of note for each plant The Color Spires and Profusion series from Proven Winners. Speedwell (Veronica) is an easy-to-grow perennial with long tall spikes of small petals in different shades of blue, purple, pink, or white. Speedwells are a little shorter than salvias and some varieties are even prostrate, offering more of a ground cover. Matt and Joanne discuss: The growing conditions: it grows best in full sun and best be deadheaded to extend bloom The Magic Show series from Proven Winners Enjoy past perennial Down the Garden Path podcast episodes: Intro to Perennials Perennials: Peonies Perennials: Groundcovers Perennials: Ornamental Grasses Perennials: Attracting Beneficial Insects Shade: Beyond the Hosta About Your Hosts Each week on Down The Garden Path podcast, professional landscape designers Joanne Shaw and Matthew Dressing discuss down-to-earth tips and advice for your plants, gardens and landscapes. This podcast interview focuses on product innovation that has the power to help marketers to build the meaningful relationships with the right companies. My guest is Riaz Kanani, Founder and CEO of Radiate B2B.Riaz is a mix of marketer, technologist and entrepreneur who worked with cutting edge technologies throughout his career, whether it be the nascent flash/java video space in the early 2000s to combining email, mobile and social media marketing technologies in 2008. Throughout it all, he’s used data as the backbone behind these technologies to better understand how people behave and use these new approaches. In that journey he founded 6 companies and worked for IBM, Lyris, Alchemy Worx and Profusion. He’s also a mentor at Techstars.Today he’s helping to build a better way to do B2B Marketing that increases both average contract values and the speed of closing contracts. And this resonated with me, and hence I invited Riaz to my podcast. We explore what’s broken in marketing automation and why the answer is in choosing a different approach, not in more tools. We also discuss what it takes to succeed in B2B software, and what decisions and mindsets are fundamental to stand out. Here are some of his quotes:It became really clear when talking to those companies that we've become in the b2b or business marketing space, very reliant on content and events to drive lead acquisition, nurturing, email marketing obviously as well. Basically, we were all reliant on exactly the same things, and b2b marketing would become homogenous. And the only way to stand out was really to be doing better creative. And I think that's a marketer’s worst nightmare.I felt that there had to be a better way.The more I looked at it, the more I realized that if you were building a marketing automation company today, you wouldn't build a platform that looked anything like the marketing automation platforms that exist today.During this interview, you will learn four things:That there’s no nice handbook that tells you exactly what’s going to happen with your software business: so, to succeed it’s your duty to hire people that can think on their feetWhy your marketing will become exponentially better if you start thinking about the world as being a list of companies that you build relationships withHow defensible differentiation can be created by blending a strong product with an irresistible business model. That your decision how to position yourselves in a space can create a significant problem around your messagingFor more information about the guest from this week:Riaz KananiWebsite Radiate B2B See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Professor Frank Romano found out the consequences of non-violent protesting against the destruction of this village. Professor Romano explains beautifully in this 2 1/2 minute video. For background info on Khan al-Ahnar, take a look at these articles from the Israeli newspaper, Harretz: "Everything You Need to Know About the West Bank Bedouin Village at the Eye of a Diplomatic Storm," "In Unusual Move, Israeli Army Arrests French-American Law Professor in West Bank" and "Why Did Israel Handcuff and Deport a French-American Law Professor?"

Cocos Island, in the eastern Pacific, was rumored to hold buried treasure worth millions of dollars, but centuries of treasure seekers had failed to find it. That didn't deter August Gissler, who arrived in 1889 with a borrowed map and an iron determination. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll follow Gissler's obsessive hunt for the Treasure of Lima. We'll also marvel at the complexity of names and puzzle over an undead corpse. Intro: In 1875, Frederick Law Olmsted warned his son of the dangers of unchecked pussycats. Dogs were formerly so common at church services that "dog whippers" were employed to manage them. Mike and Julian talk being nice, easily accessible to strangers, and Julian tells more about his day with Snoop Dogg. The 100th word is PROFUSION which somehow led into the diving into a classic joke, Julian and Mike coming up with "John Whoops", and for the first time in 100 episodes, the guest gets upset about the word. TUNE IN TO FIND OUT WHY (clickbait).   Thank you to all of our loyal framily members, our new ones, and our soon to be LISTENS.

Zecharias was the first person to hear that Jesus was going to be born, and his response was to praise the Lord for His "tender mercy". He understood that God was offering clemency and forgiveness to all people, even though mankind had rebelled against Him. This fact should change our lives, and we put ourselves on the "witness stand" by asking hard questions to evaluate how we are responding to God's mercy.

Selective Aortic Arch Perfusion - Summary by: Jim Manning Selective Aortic Arch Perfusion (SAAP) is an endovascular-extracorporeal perfusion resuscitation technique designed specifically to treat cardiac arrest. SAAP involves the blind insertion of a large-lumen balloon occlusion catheter into the descending thoracic aortic arch via a femoral artery.  With the SAAP catheter balloon inflated in the thoracic aorta, the heart and brain are relatively isolated for resuscitative perfusion through the SAAP catheter lumen with an oxygen-carrying fluid (such as blood, hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier or fluorocarbon emulsion). SAAP promotes restoration of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) by the heart while protecting the brain from further ischemic insult. SAAP can be used to treat both hemorrhage-induced traumatic cardiac arrest and medical, non-traumatic cardiac arrest. In traumatic cardiac arrest, SAAP provides the combination of (1) thoracic aortic balloon occlusion for control of hemorrhage below the diaphragm, (2) rapid volume replacement in hemorrhage-induced hypovolemia to restore normovolemia and (3) perfusion of the heart and brain in an effort to achieve ROSC. SAAP also allows titration of small doses of intra-aortic adrenaline or other medications to achieve ROSC. In medical cardiac arrest, SAAP catheter balloon occlusion of the thoracic aorta limits the distribution of oxygenated perfusate toward the heart and brain. Since medical cardiac arrest patients are not typically hypovolemic, SAAP with an exogenous oxygen-carrier is a volume loading intervention that can only be used for a short time period (5-10 min). If ROSC is not achieved with the limited volume of exogenous oxygen-carrier, femoral venous access during initial SAAP infusion allows venous blood withdrawal for continued SAAP support to promote ROSC without further volume loading (autologous blood SAAP or, essentially, aortic arch ECMO). Intra-aortic adrenaline and anti-reperfusion agents can also be used. Even if ROSC is not rapidly achieved, SAAP serves as a bridge that limits hypoperfusion until cannulation for full body ECMO can be achieved.
