Trauma can be life-changing, devastating, and difficult to heal from if not addressed quickly. But trauma can also reveal hidden traits within us that may lead to positive and mind-blowing transformations, especially for those with an entrepreneurial mindset. Mark Monchek is our resident cohost and, as the Founder and Chief Opportunity Officer of Opportunity Lab, he is the perfect entrepreneur to walk us through today's topic, and he begins by defining ‘trauma' as we have come to understand it here on The Other Side of Potential. We discuss how trauma can be a catalyst for unlocking hidden potential, why successful entrepreneurs are often unhappy in life, and what Dr. Spano's guided meditation taught her about the importance of reestablishing our divinity. About Think Fast Think Fast is a mini-episode featuring 10 rapid-fire questions. Think Fast Questions What is your favorite podcast? Revisionist History If you had a superhero name, what would it be? Grace What qualities do you think makes a great leader? Curiosity, compassion, and awareness. What is the most important skill of the future? Being conscious and understanding the interdependence of our planet and the ecosystem. What part of the future are you most optimistic about? The ability for people who have similar values to collaborate and co-create together. What is your definition of success, and has it changed over time? Success to me is going to bed every night, feeling grateful for the day, feeling i did the best i could, and being able to know what i could do better the next day. What negative experience in your life are you most happy that happened to you? My wife and I bought our first home. Six days after we moved in, somebody tried to burn it down. They came in days after they stole hand carved fireplace mantles stainless windows, my bike, TV. We move back in to this house with no heat, no hot water, no alarm system, no electricity, no plumbing and no kitchen. And so I understood gratitude of the neighbors giving us food helping us figure out what we could buy. We didn't even know anybody in the neighborhood. People brought us things just out of the compassion of their hearts. I understood the interdependence of things and also less dependent on material things. We had few dollars in the bank. We just gotten married a year and a half ago; this was our dream house. We had to really see the bigger picture and understand grace at that deeper level. I'm very glad that happened to me and me it made me a better person. What is one thing everyone listening to this episode should go and do today? Talk to strangers. Talk to people in your Uber. Talk to people at the cashier. Talk to people in a bank line. Understand that everybody is a soul. Just like you, everybody is a human being that deserves respect. Most people actually want to talk and once they do, you can find out brilliant, amazing things and you might find out somebody may becomes your long lost friend or your wife or your business partner. What advice would you give to someone who is feeling stuck or unsure about their career path? Quiet minds go deep. Ask yourself what am I here to do? Why am I here on Earth right now in this lifetime? Wait until you get the answer. It might not happen immediately. But if you keep asking that question and understand that you you are loved, no matter what you do, if you can start from the point of view of unconditional love the same way you would want to love your child love yourself, then the question doesn't become so stressful. The Infinity Gauntlet gives the holder the ability to snap their fingers and make anything their mind can imagine into reality. Here's the catch though: it generally costs the wearer who snaps their fingers their lives. I have this gauntlet, and I'm offering it to you. What would you want to happen? The world becomes sustainable because we all understand the sacredness of life and are the responsibility we have to all living things. What kind of business do you want to run? What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind? What kind of life do you want to live? Each one of us can choose how we operate in the world, and the way we choose to operate can no longer just be based on our own personal desires. We need to all be conscious of how our actions affect the people around us and the environment that sustains us. Enter the concept of conscious business. Being in the business world is challenging, and it's so easy to get trapped in the hamster wheel of endless to-do lists and meetings and high levels of stress. But when was the last time you actually took a moment to think about the “why” behind all of your actions? It is undeniable that the world of business, and the world in general, is vastly different from what it was even just a few years ago, and that fact necessitates a new way of thinking and doing and being. Gratitude, collaboration, and learning are foundational to conscious business and in this week's episode, Mark Monchek is back in the co-host seat for an eye-opening discussion about what it takes to shed the self-centered (unconscious) approach to business that is so common in the Western world and to embrace a leadership style that will make the world a better place. What you'll learn about in this episode:Mark explains the meaning of conscious business.Examples of conscious innovations. Why it is easier for small businesses to pivot towards more sustainable, ethical business models than it is for big businesses. The two key questions that Mark asks his clients who are interested in becoming more conscious business owners. How Opportunity Lab helps entrepreneurs build the businesses they really want to be building.Understanding interdependence: the first step in conscious business. Factors that separate conscious leaders from unconscious leaders. Why outcome matters so much more than output.Opportunity Lab's approach to optimizing and inspiring workforces. Why gratitude, collaboration, and learning are the three pillars of conscious business.Transcript: HereAdditional Resources:Mark Moncheck on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/markmonchek/ Mark Monchek on Twitter: https://mobile.twitter.com/markmonchek Opportunity Lab: https://opplab.com/ Opportunity Community: https://opplab.com/opportunity-community/ Opportunity Lab on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-opportunity-lab/ Opportunity Lab on Twitter: https://twitter.com/opplab?lang=en Sharon Spano:Website: sharonspano.comFacebook: facebook.com/SharonSpanoPHDInstagram: instagram.com/drsharonspano/LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/sharonspano/Book: thetimemoneybook.comContact: sharon@sharonspano.comTwitter: twitter.com/SharonSpanoThe Other Side of Potential Podcast: sharonspano.com/podcast/

“What can I do to create more belonging?” is a question that we should all be asking ourselves in a world where many workplaces are virtual, and screens are (inadequately) replacing real human connection. The loneliness epidemic has been on the rise since 2013, and the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated it multifold, so it's time that we do something about it. During today's episode, Mark Monchek joins us for a discussion around what a sense of belonging at work looks like, the benefits of it, and how we can all go about finding it, no matter what kind of work environment we are in. Loneliness has become a habit, and the best way to break a habit is to develop new ones.Creating a sense of belonging all starts with forming connections with other people, and there are so many different ways that organizations can facilitate those connections, from “lunch and learns” to meditation clubs to book signing events. Today our expert guest is Mark Monchek, an outstanding man with a powerful story. He's the founder and Chief Opportunity Officer of the Opportunity Lab, a strategy consulting firm focused on conscious growth and the author of #1 Bestseller “Culture of Opportunity,” where his tools on how to grow during an age of disruption are more relevant today than ever before. Everybody finds their purpose in life at different points. Some people are born with it, but most people find it out through a crisis. Mark's life trajectory was set, primarily, by three tragedies. His parents got divorced when he was very young, and from that point on, they never talked to each other about their two kids, which wound up being deeply traumatic for Mark. The second happened in 1981, when Mark and his wife bought their first house only to have an arsonist burn it down six days later. And the third happened in the 2008 recession, when an associate stole a large amount of money from his business, throwing Mark into a deep and dark depression. Luckily, he recognized the support he received during this dark period, and he was to find the opportunity in that tragedy to move forward. He realized that his purpose was to serve companies that wanted to grow consciously and because they deeply care about their customers, their employees, and the communities they serve. Building a conscious mindset within your company starts with compassion. Get into a conversation with whoever it is your serving, whether it's a customer or an employee, and find out what really matters to them. Mark's Culture of Opportunity process breaks down into these key parts: Define the results that you stand for and that give you pride. Make sure there is a balance between financially-driven and purpose-driven results. Find the team of people who are going to take you to this next level of sustainable growth. This team must be filled with a diverse set of people both inside and outside of the organization. Look for the ways that other companies are serving their customers or employees that you find exciting or innovative, whether they're in your industry or not. We are all in this life together, and we don't have to sacrifice that fundamental truth for business success. In fact, the best way to succeed is to create a culture of opportunity for all.   The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “One of the misbeliefs I had that led up to this depression was that I was alone in my dark feelings and in these painful thoughts. That kind of came from my childhood experience where, I think, my parents felt that they were alone. When I realized I wasn't because of the people that supported me through that terrible period, and I began to understand the importance of interdependence. We do nothing in our lives alone. We don't go to the bathroom alone. We don't eat alone. People think that they are independent, but everything you do depends on someone else.”   --   Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. Give your attention to what you would like to put in the world. This also applies to drawing out the best out of people, and aligning them with those characteristics. It is Mark's goal to help companies unlock the resources in your ecosystem. He believes that this pandemic has challenged our reality and opened people to ideas like conscious and sustainable business practices. This has also changed the relationship between employer and employee. Many people, particularly millennials, now refuse to work for a company that does not care for them and are convincing the older generation to follow suit. *Segment 2* Sam and Mark talk about what is needed to work in the new world. Working from home has connected and empowered employees, they are in more control of their environment. People are even changing their environment and buying new homes, living with their parents, changing their scenery. Some of these people move to be safe, or because they are freed from the constraints of a commute and have more options for housing. Productivity is increasing but people are having challenges setting boundaries for themselves. Boundaries that were once set for them by their commute, their workspace in the office, and the people surrounding them *Segment 3* Sam talks about how he began to structure his work environment at home. Mark notes that rituals allow us to be grounded in our day. Mind, body and spirit. He recommends that his clients create a ritual from themselves. One of his clients simulates a fake commute before and after he works in order to keep him grounded. By setting your intentions in the morning and processing it later, it becomes easier to separate your days. Mark has noticed growing diversity within companies. He is not sure whether it is due to the public protest and discussion that is taking place, or due to the fact that geographical boundaries created new opportunities for recruitment. Mark has seen the benefit that diversity can have on a company. *Segment 4* This pandemic has been unpredictable, many did not expect the impact that it would have. Mark believes that it is due to how connected we are, even though we did not fully realize it before. It is important to understand your place as a citizen as the world, accepting the reality that others live in, and collaborating to share resources. Mark accepts that life will not immediately return to normal when the pandemic ends. Accommodations will need to be made in order to make everyone feel included. Rather than a return to normalcy we must create an inclusive future.
