Have you ever felt like you're doing all the right things, yet something still feels… off? What if your outer results are just a reflection of the energy you’re holding inside? In this soul-expanding episode, we explore the often misunderstood concept of vibrational frequency—and how it silently shapes your entire reality. You don't have to fake positivity or wait to “feel good” to create real change. You just need to become aware of where you are… and be willing to shift. This episode offers three powerful insights to help you elevate your energy and live in alignment with your highest self. Your Frequency Is a Mirror: We're not manifesting from what we want—we're manifesting from who we're being. Catherine shares a personal story of leading her team through a bold project that stalled, not because of strategy, but because of stagnant energy. Through a simple “vibe check,” everything changed. The takeaway? Your external world reflects your internal signal. You Don't Have to Feel Amazing to Shift: This isn't about bypassing emotions—it's about emotional truth with energetic intention. Using Dr. David Hawkins' map of consciousness, Catherine reveals how even small shifts—from fear to acceptance, or from doubt to courage—can unlock momentum and healing. Real transformation doesn't require perfection; it requires presence. Make Vibration a Daily Practice: Raising your frequency isn't a one-time fix—it's a way of life. Catherine shares her go-to practices for daily energetic hygiene: checking your emotional baseline, using intentional language, and calibrating collective energy in groups. These micro-shifts become the foundation for a more aligned, magnetic life. This isn't just an episode—it's an invitation to stop grinding and start resonating. If you're ready to step into emotional alignment and unlock your next level, this one's for you. You can watch the video of this episode on YouTube. Did you know there is a connection between loss of smell and Parkinson's disease? In fact, it may turn out to be a predictor of the disease up to 10 years before a clinic diagnosis of PD. Here are some interesting stats: · 100% of major brain disorders are associated with smell loss · 96% of newly diagnosed people with Parkinson's have lost some ability to smell · 70% of people living with smell loss don't know it until they are tested · 50% of people over the age of 60 may be living with smell loss I am fortunate to have spoken to a leader in the research of smell loss, Dr. Richard Doty. We had a fascinating discussion on smell loss and what it can mean for those suffering including a loss of taste which may lead to weight loss. Additionally, we chatted about the work the MJFF is doing with its landmark smell loss study through the PPMI program. Using Dr. Doty's scratch-and-sniff test, PPMI hopes to help scientists learn more about this risk factor for PD. I've taken it twice. I don't think I passed it. https://www.michaeljfox.org/smell-loss-brain-health-request-your-smell-test https://mysmelltest.org/mjffbsd https://sensonics.com/product/smell-identification-test/ https://www.dbsandme.com/en.html

Join the University of Washington Surgical Palliative Care Team for their final episode of this series — a dual journal review and clinical challenges discussion on assessing medical decision-making capacity. Using Dr. Paul Applebaum's foundational framework, the team outlines the four key criteria for evaluating capacity and brings the topic to life through two contrasting standardized patient scenarios. This episode highlights why capacity assessment is not only relevant but essential for surgeons navigating complex, high-stakes decisions. Hosts: Dr. Katie O'Connell (@katmo15) is an associate professor of surgery at the University of Washington. She is a trauma surgeon, palliative care physician, director of surgical palliative care, and founder of the Advance Care Planning for Surgery clinic at Harborview Medical Center, Seattle, WA. Dr. Ali Haruta is an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Washington. She is a trauma and emergency general surgeon and palliative care physician. Ali recently completed fellowships in palliative care at the University of Washington and Trauma and Critical Care at Parkland. Dr. Lindsay Dickerson (@lindsdickerson1) is a PGY6 general surgery resident at the University of Washington with an interest in surgical oncology. Dr. Virginia Wang is a PGY3 general surgery resident at the University of Washington. Learning Objectives: 1. Decipher the distinction between the terms “capacity” and “competence”. 2. Describe the four criteria for assessing medical decision-making capacity presented in Dr. Paul Applebaum's article “Assessment of Patients' Competence to Consent to Treatment.” 3. Apply the capacity assessment framework to real-world clinical scenarios in surgical practice. References: 1. Applebaum, PS. Assessment of Patients' Competence to Consent to Treatment. Join the conversation in our community at https://butjesusdrankwine.com/community. In this special episode, we got to guest-host Dr. Lee Warren's Spiritual Self-Brain Surgery podcast to discuss the first five of his 10 Commandments of Self-Brain Surgery—powerful principles that combine neuroscience and faith to help you overcome challenges and break free from the destructive patterns in your life, including alcohol use. We dive into the intersection of neuroscience and spirituality, sharing how you can take charge of your thoughts, emotions, and actions to create lasting transformation. Using Dr. Lee's commandments as a guide, we explore how you can change your brain by changing your mind. Commandments 1-5: 1️⃣ I Must Relentlessly Refuse to Participate in My Own Demise You're either building your brain—or breaking it. Every thought, feeling, belief, and action either propels you forward or holds you hostage. This commandment emphasizes the choice to embrace life with each decision, fostering a mindset of resilience and growth. 2️⃣ I Must Believe That Feelings Are Not Facts; They Are Chemical Events in My Brain Emotions are signals, not truths. They're data, not destiny. We discuss how to honor your feelings without being controlled by them, and how to act on what's true, even when your emotions are telling you something different. 3️⃣ I Must Believe That Most of My Automatic Thoughts Are Untrue Your brain's default mode is not designed for joy or truth; it's built for survival. This means that many of your automatic thoughts are unreliable. We dive into how to challenge these thoughts and train your brain to align with your true mind—moving from survival mode to thriving. 4️⃣ I Must Believe That My Mind Is in Charge of My Brain This is a game-changer. You're not a victim of your neurochemistry. You can actually change it. We explore how taking control of your mind allows you to access hope, healing, and peace. Mind-over-brain is key to lasting transformation. 5️⃣ I Must Believe That Self–Brain Surgery Is Not a Metaphor; It is the Mechanism of Transforming My Life Self-brain surgery is real—it's not just a metaphor. Your thoughts are like a scalpel that can cut out toxic patterns and implant healthier ones. This principle is grounded in neuroplasticity and aligns with biblical renewal (Romans 12:2). We share how this concept works in both science and Scripture. Key Takeaways: How to stop sabotaging your own growth and choose life with every thought and action Why emotions are signals, not truths, and how to process them without letting them control you The importance of challenging automatic thoughts and rewiring your brain for joy and truth Understanding mind-over-brain control and its impact on your life The power of self-brain surgery and how it leads to true transformation Scripture Reference: Romans 12:2 – "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." We hope this episode inspires you to take charge of your thoughts and actions, and ultimately, to live a life free from the destructive patterns that hold you back. Ever wonder why you snap or shut down with the person you love most? In this powerful episode, hosts Robert and Sharla Snow kick off a multi-part series exploring how trauma—big or small—shapes our closest relationships. Through the lens of brain science and a moving client story, they unpack how unhealed wounds from the past can “hijack” your marriage, driving conflict or disconnection. Using Dr. Dan Siegel's hand model of the brain, Terry Real's wise adult vs. triggered self framework, and Pia Mellody's concept of the adaptive child, they reveal why we “flip our lid” and how trauma fuels those moments. The episode centers on Ethan and Lilly, a couple whose 25-year marriage was transformed when Lilly faced her childhood trauma with courage. This is a story of healing, hope, and rediscovering the US in your relationship. Tune in to learn how to spot your own triggers and start bringing your wise adult self back to your marriage.Key Takeaways Trauma's Lasting Impact: Big “T” trauma (like abuse) or small “t” trauma (subtler wounds) can make it harder to stay emotionally regulated, causing you to “flip your lid” and react from a triggered, younger self rather than your wise adult self. Flipping Your Lid: When stress or conflict overwhelms your upstairs brain (prefrontal cortex), your downstairs brain (limbic system) takes over, shifting you from an *us* consciousness to a *me* vs. *you* mindset, disrupting connection with your partner. The Adaptive Child: As Pia Mellody explains, the adaptive child is a coping mechanism formed in childhood to protect you from pain. While lifesaving then, it can become maladaptive in adult relationships, as seen in Lilly's anger-driven reactions to Ethan. Healing Is Possible: By naming and addressing trauma (e.g., through techniques like Time Line Therapy and inner child work), you can shift from reactive patterns to relational, wise adult responses, as Ethan and Lilly did through vulnerability and mutual understanding. Ask the Key Question: Inspired by Terry Real, ask yourself, “Which version of me is showing up?” Recognizing when your triggered self is in charge is the first step to choosing connection over conflict. Coming Up: Next week, we'll explore small “t” trauma—quieter wounds that still shape how you love and fight—and share tips to spot your adaptive child and bring your wise self online.Dive Deeper: Resources Mentioned Want to explore the concepts and tools from this episode? Here are the experts and resources we referenced to help you deepen your understanding of trauma and relationships: 1. Dr. Dan Siegel – The Hand Model of the Brain The Developing Mind: How Relationships and the Brain Interact to Shape Who We Are (3rd Edition, 2020) Dr. Siegel's accessible explanation of the brain, including the “flipping your lid” concept, helps you understand emotional regulation in relationships. Website: https://www.drdansiegel.com/Free resources, videos, and courses on the hand model and interpersonal neurobiology. Relevance: Used to explain how the prefrontal cortex (upstairs brain) and limbic system (downstairs brain) interact when trauma triggers emotional reactivity.2. Keith Miller)Mellody's work on the adaptive child and childhood trauma's lasting effects shows how early coping mechanisms impact adult...
Why don't I feel like praying? Because when I pray, I say the same old things about the same old things. There is nothing wrong with praying ABOUT the same things. The issue is SAYING the same things about the same things. One remedy to our frustrated praying is to pray the Bible. Using Dr. Donald Whitney's method outlined in his book, "Praying the Bible," Pastor Paul presents this method in this sermon on prayer.
Many of us tend to judge our most intense or unpleasant emotional responses which only increases their intensity by piling on shame. How might he/she be trying to help, although in an unhelpful way? How might recognizing the various moments that comprise your complex emotional system help you feel less consumed by them? Consider an area in which you typically feel guilt. Using Dr. Allison's discussion on conditioned guilt as a guide, what emotions might your guilt be masking? What is the difference between numbing and self-soothing? How might learning to name your emotions without judgement help you become more aware of what is occurring within you? This episode begins an equipping series on improving our study of the Scriptures through contextual understanding. Using Dr. Craig Keener's helpful guide, The Bible in Its Context: How to Improve Your Study of the Scriptures, we begin to examine the pitfalls of building beliefs and understanding based on proof texts and word studies alone. Join us as we through contextual reading unravel the apparent contradiction between Romans 3:28 (one is justified by faith apart from the works of the law) and James 2:24 (a person is justified by works and not by faith alone).

Trauma can be life-changing, devastating, and difficult to heal from if not addressed quickly. But trauma can also reveal hidden traits within us that may lead to positive and mind-blowing transformations, especially for those with an entrepreneurial mindset. Mark Monchek is our resident cohost and, as the Founder and Chief Opportunity Officer of Opportunity Lab, he is the perfect entrepreneur to walk us through today's topic, and he begins by defining ‘trauma' as we have come to understand it here on The Other Side of Potential. We discuss how trauma can be a catalyst for unlocking hidden potential, why successful entrepreneurs are often unhappy in life, and what Dr. Spano's guided meditation taught her about the importance of reestablishing our divinity. We also learn about the need to reexamine how spirituality plays out in the secular world. Be sure to tune in for the next steps you should follow if you are ready to embrace your superpowers. What you'll learn about in this episode:Mark Monchek reiterates our definition of trauma. How trauma can be the catalyst for hidden superpowers to be revealed. Why many thriving entrepreneurs don't experience the joys of their success. Using Dr. Spano's experience with her late son, Michael, as a case study for how trauma can transcend into superpowers. How revealing your superpowers starts with a guided meditation. What Dr. Sharon learned from her short meditation about her spirituality. Why we need to redefine “abundant impact”/”social entrepreneurship” and reassess how spirituality shows up in the secular world. A call to action for listeners who are ready to unleash their superpowers. Using Dr. James Sire's book, The Universe Next Door, Monique and Dr. Joe Miller discuss different major worldviews, how they differ from the historic Christian Faith, and why Christianity serves as the most hopeful lens to view the world. ***WORLDVIEW SERIES*** In this special livestream series, Monique is joined by Dr. Joe Miller to discuss the major worldviews. They use Dr. James Sire's book, The Universe Next Door, as the foundation for their discussion. We all have a lens by which we view the world, a worldview. As Christians, viewing the world through a distinctly Christian lens is important, but this can be difficult. Each worldview answer major life questions: what does it mean to be human, what is the meaning of reality, what is the meaning of history, how is knowledge obtained and what is knowable? Living in a religiously pluralistic society, we can unintentionally borrow from non-Christian worldviews.

Using Dr. Huebner's expertise and Laurie's characters, we reflect on the range of features that can show up in someone with autism spectrum disorder. Autism can look very different in different people, but there are common themes that can help us better understand this kind of neurodivergence. Seeing the strengths. Rather than pathologizing Monday's autistic characteristics, Laurie sees them as simple differences — and in some cases, as strengths. Getting to know someone with autism spectrum disorder (whether in fiction or real life) can help us better understand these differences.Imagining a better world. Laurie's book is set in an inclusive community that has been set up with a universal design to accommodate people of different abilities. "If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration." - Nikola TeslaIf I could have dinner with any person (dead or alive) - I've always wanted to sit across from Nikola Tesla. Let me tell you how I SCREAMED when I came across Matthew Rife, whose relative collaborated with Tesla to create technology in the 1920s which was used to address various health concerns!Something wild happened to Dr. Royal Rife's tech (you'll learn more about that in the episode), but now, Matthew has decided to take this 70+ year family secret and boldly bring it to the world so that more people have access to innovative wellness solutions. Because, we're electrical beings. Wouldn't it make sense to harness the electromagnetic fields found naturally on Earth to heal?Meet Matthew RifeAs a relative of Dr. Royal Rife, Matthew Rife inherited his Uncle Roy's proprietary journals, notes, formulas and blueprints. At a very young age, Matt was gifted with exceptional mechanical ability and took an interest in Dr. Rife's manuscripts. He quickly vaulted into learning more about mechanics, electrical and structural engineering, math, physics and theory creation.Using Dr. Rife's journals and all of the knowledge acquired through his studies, Matt took on the heavy task of resurrecting his uncle's machine – the REAL Rife Machine. Together with his business partner, Hunter Samakool, Matthew seeks to change the world, starting with transforming the health tech industry. He currently lives on the Gulf Coast and spends his free time fishing, being in nature, and focusing on humanitarian related projects. What you'll learn from our episode:The DIVINE way Matthew came into my life.Who Dr. Royal Raymond Rife is and how his therapeutic technology helps. Why he doesn't use the word "cure".Why Matthew is the first Rife in the family to step out of the shadows of secrecy with this world-changing tech. How he's protecting his research, formulas, and blueprints from being destroyed. How he's making his Rife Machines accessible.Nature, the frequency of love, and how we can absorb it.Healy technology vs Rife Technology. What Matthew was doing with his life before creating the Rife Machine. The heart-breaking catalyst that shifted Matthew onto this path. His vision for the future of our world and how he's doing his part. As an interior designer, nearly every conversation that starts a new project either begins with a series of excuses (why things are the way they are) or the realization that the clients just can't stay in the state they have been and need help getting to where they want to go. It takes a bit of self-actualization to realize that you need outside help to get to your desired goal. That is true in design as it is in virtually every other part of life. That doesn't mean that help has to be professional. It doesn't even mean it has to be a person. Shifting how you are thinking about any situation is the ONLY path forward. “If you correct your mind, the rest of your life will fall into place.” -Lao-tzu It was an act of trusting Divine guidance that brought Dr. Wayne Dyer into my life in the first place. If you are a fan of his like I am, you know the power of his words as well as the power of the thought behind them. The book, Excuses Begone! In this episode, I use the inspiration of this book as a springboard for this deeper understanding of excuses and they affect us far more than we realize. We journey through the 7 principles you need to master to move into an “excuse-less” way of living. Those principles are: Awareness Alignment Now Contemplation Willingness Passion Compassion I provide you with a formula for incorporating these principles as well as mantras you can use daily to shift the control of your life from your subconscious into your consciousness. Using Dr. Dyer's guidance system, we can practice these principles by starting small and allowing them to filter into our conscious (or waking) minds. Soon, they become the natural framework for working through much bigger tasks, dreams, and ideas. Be sure to stay to the end where I share with you the moment that these 7 principles showed up in real form as I was making the last notes on this podcast! This has been a tough week in the United States and while being interviewed on Tom Schimmer's[i] educational podcast on Monday that focuses on learning, leadership, and life, he asked me what keeps me up at night related to education, and my answer to him was “school shootings” since they don't seem to be going away. This was a day before the next mass school shooting would hit the news around the world. This has been a really tough week for everyone, in addition to the stress the world is already facing, and I'm sure those listening to this episode outside of the US can feel the turmoil, and have many questions. While I certainly don't have all the answers, I do have some thoughts that I think can provide some insight and hope for those who tune in. After this incident, while working on releasing our next episode, nothing felt right to me as I was writing, and so I figured the best solution was to take a break from our usual episodes, and think of ways that we could use this platform to amplify the voices left behind (like Chey and Pav have done do well)[ii] and highlight those who have been working in the trenches, to provide solutions for those impacted by the events like we saw repeated this week. For returning guests, welcome back, and for those who are new here, I'm Andrea Samadi, author, and educator, with a passion for learning, understanding difficult concepts, and breaking them down so that we can all use and apply the most current research to improve our productivity and results in our schools, sports environments, and workplace environments. For today's episode, #218, and this week's Brain Fact Friday, we are going to look at how neuroscience can help us to understand what's happening in our world today, with some strategies that we can all use to move us from a world of chaos, towards hope. Now this episode feels right to me. Before we take a look at these brain-based solutions, getting a bigger picture overview of the events that occurred this week is important. The k12 school shooting database lists some charts and graphs that provide visuals of this issue documenting “each and every instance a gun is brandished, is fired, or a bullet hits school property (in the US) for any reason, regardless of the number of victims, time, day of the week.” There's a map that you can click on to see the incidents that have occurred by state[iii], and it's eye-opening. Click on the link in the show notes and see for yourself. There wasn't ONE state in the US that was exempt. You can see some that have less incidents, but country wide, you can see no one remains unaffected. There's also another graph that shows some of the most recent and well-known incidents next to ones we might not all know by name, all the well-known incidents highlighted in red. We can see Columbine in 1999 with 13 people killed, Sandy Hook in 2012 with 26, Sante Fe 2018 (10), Parkland, Florida, 2022 (17) and now Uvalde, Texas with 21 killed this week. I share these numbers and visuals as a way to show that what Mathew Portell said is right on the mark. Moments of silence aren't solutions. It's time to speak up. But what exactly do we say? How can we “Seek to Understand?” when things are so horrible and abnormal? Dr. Covey's timeless principles can help us all here. We must first Seek to Understand[iv], using Dr. Stephen Covey's Habit #5. How do we understand such difficult tragedies in our world? The Brain of a School Shooter: This takes me back to the work of American Psychologist, Dr. Daniel Amen[v], whose work looking at the brain through SPECT Image Scans[vi] (that looks at blood flow and activity in the brain—where he looks to make improvements and further balance the flow to improve brain function) his work and scans weren't widely accepted when he began years ago, but he now helps people who come to his offices across the country (from well-known sports athletes, to celebrities, to regular people) to look at their brain to get to the root of their health and wellbeing from the brain level. He's famous for saying “When our brain works right, you work right.” Dr. Amen focuses on “why” this behavior is occurring (Habit #5) as he explained on recent Instagram post that the brain of Kip Kinkel[vii] (the shooter from the Thurston High School Shooting in Springfield, OR, 1998) was shown to be “toxic, damaged, and dramatically under active.” Dr. Amen said it “was one of the worst 15-year-old brains” he has ever seen and reminds us that “we have to talk about brain function whenever behavior is so awful and abnormal” and that “if we understand why (his brain is this way—he thinks possibly lack of oxygen at birth) then we can do something about it, but “most people get medication without understanding their brain.” (Dr. Daniel Amen Instagram). Dr. Amen shows a healthy brain that is smooth, even and symmetrical, versus an unhealthy, under-active brain when he points to the brain of the shooter. The challenge with this strategy is that we don't have SPECT image scanners in our classrooms (or any brain scanners at all for that matter!) to pinpoint those with unhealthy toxic brains, so we could do something with this information. What the Future Holds: Prevention from Understanding Dr. Amen is working on making brain scans that he offers more accessible, which only the future will tell, and aren't immediate solutions but there is still a lot that researching the brains of people who are committing these crimes can show. Since a SPECT image scan would only work on someone who is living (since it measures blood flow and activity in the brain) they can also look at the brain of someone who has died, to see what can be learned. The Brain of NFL Player Aaron Hernandez Just by looking at a razor-thin slice of the brain of Aaron Hernandez, (who was a football player in the NFL who was arrested and convicted of the murder of Odin Lloyd, and ended up committing suicide in prison) it was clear that “his brain was riddled with stage 3 CTE, a neurodegenerative disease which has 4 stages and has been found in athletes like football players, boxers and soccer players who endure repeated concussions and other blows to the head. It's been associated with memory loss, cognitive dysfunction, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors.”[viii] While brain scans are not an immediate but a future solution, I thought about what else we could do as we reflect on the events that stopped us all in our tracks this week to give us some peace in the middle of this chaos. Dr. Amen says often that he's in the “helping business” showing that his brain is hard-wired for altruism. So How Can We Help Others With our Brain in Mind? Friederike Fabritus, a pioneer in the field of neurol-eadership, who joined us on EPISODE #27[ix] reminded me this week that “one aspect that is very important for our brain is purpose. When we help others and behave in altruistic ways, our brain is flooded with the happiness trifecta: dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin. These are instant well-being boosters.”[x] Doing good for others helps us to feel better! Research has shown that our brains are hard-wired for altruism and purpose.” Which brings us to this week's Brain Fact Friday. Did you know that: “Doing good for others helps us to feel better!” (Friederike Fabritius[xi], and from the research of a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, LA, Leonardo Christov-Moore[xii] that “our altruism may be more hard-wired than previously thought?”[xiii] Besides, Dr. Amen, who is helping us to “understand” why people behave in abnormal ways, we also have people in the world who take this understanding to another level by actually doing something about the problems that they see. This leads me to highlight the work of Darryl Scott, the father of Rachel Joy Scott, the first student killed at Columbine High School, who founded Rachelschallenge.org that focuses on his daughter's life, with this legacy, not her death. Darryl Scott has spoken to over five million people in live settings around the world, not counting the millions he has spoken to through programs such as Oprah, Larry King Live, CNN, and the Today Show. He has authored or co-authored five books, and meets with politicians and educators regularly concerning issues of school violence. I highlight Darryl Scott in this episode (even though there are others taking a stand to end violence in our schools) but I had the chance to hear Darryl Scott speak when he keynoted at a School Counselors Conference in Arizona in 2018 and it was an event I will never forget. While he talked about the importance of safe schools, and provided a timeline of the shootings that occurred after Columbine, he took us all back to the person who created education in the United States in the first place, Horace Mann.[xiv] Scott reminded us about The Principles of the Father of Education, one being the importance of making education “inclusive” for all children. He asked us to all think about where we are today with helping all students feel safe in our schools, making us all think to where US education began in the first place. For this week's Brain Fact Friday where “doing good for others makes us feel better” and that we are “hard-hired for altruism” I hope that we can all think of how we can move forward, with understanding, and go the extra mile to help others in need. We might not be able to solve all the world's problems at once, but doing a little bit every day to help others can make an incredible ripple effect on the world. I know we all know how to do this, and look for the ones who don't stand out in the crowd to help. While writing this episode, my alarm went off, and I had to pick up my youngest from her last day of school. While I was driving her home, there were two kids walking home up the side walk. One kid, looked like the older sister and the other, the youngest was much farther behind. It's now close to 100 degrees out in AZ, so you get the picture. The little one walking behind dropped a folder of papers all over the ground, and her older sister didn't even notice. She kept walking and the two girls were now really far apart. I'm writing this episode and super sensitive to this poor kid who just wants to go home, and now here papers are everywhere, so I stopped the car, and helped her to pick up her papers. I don't think I'll ever forget the look she gave me when she said “Thank you” as she ran up the street to join her sister. We all have a story like this—maybe you've helped someone walk across the street, or you've shown your kindness in some other way, but now we all know that are brains are wired to help others in this way, and to do more of this moving forward. Review and Conclusion To conclude this week's Brain Fact Friday, where we are looking for solutions to the problems we see in the world, we went back to Dr. Daniel Amen's work where SPECT image brain scans could help us to understand “why” terrible things can happen in the world (Using Dr. Covey's Habit #5 of Seek to Understand First) but until the research catches up with every day practice, we can all remember that: “Doing good for others helps us to feel better and that our brains are hard-wired for altruism and purpose.” When we find that purpose, like Darryl Scott, who founded Rachel's Challenge, this can improve our well-being while our message goes on to impact millions more around the world. Keep our eyes open for those who could use our help, and take action when you can. We can all make the world a better place, and our brains are hard wired to do this. I hope this weekend that you surround yourself with those you love, and that you think of ways that you can help others around you, as we do have the ability to make change over time, awhich does require action, not silence. See you next week. There have been many advances in the field of cancer in recent years, and overall, people with cancer today are living longer than ever. Despite that, it is understandable that cancer still invokes fear in people. Trust is at the heart of all relationships, and the one with your doctor is no different. “The most important thing is to have a doctor who can reassure you when something is nothing and investigate when it's not.” Using “Dr. Google” to learn more about symptoms is a double-edged sword. Listen to this enriching episode where we have discussed the paradigm change in cancer treatment. We hope it adds value to your life. See you soon. Jai Hind

History was made as Ketanji Brown Jackson was confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court on April 7th. Soon to be Justice Jackson, is constantly, and will continue to be under the scrutiny of the public eye. Arguably more so, based on her gender and race in comparison to the others that have come before her. What does this mean for her husband, Dr. Jackson, a white man? How can we work to understand the oppression that comes from being in an interracial relationship? This week on the podcast, Shaunna and Lisa discuss second-hand oppression, and what it means to be an ally. Further, they dive into how allyship is hindered based on the expectation of perfection. Using Dr. Jackson and the First Second Gentleman, Doug Emhoff as examples, they dissect the spaces that these men must navigate as white spouses to women of colour, and how they act as allies to their wives and children.

Dear caregivers of kids who have been through really messy and hard stuff,We are so grateful for you - the way you show up for the kids in your lives even when you feel lost with how to best support them, when their behaviours look so overwhelming, and when you start to wonder if things can get better. Relationship trauma takes a long time to heal from, and when a young, vulnerable child is in an environment that for whatever complex reasons can't be present for and responsive to their innate needs for security, it can feel like the resulting wounds might be too hard to repair. When you are in a parenting role with a child who is relearning how to trust their adults, their expressions of their trauma, fear and mistrust can feel insulting, personal, and unsafe for YOU. We know this and we understand. We're here to get real about the impacts of attachment trauma but also to provide models of understanding about what we can do to give our futures their best chance. Humans are shockingly resilient. Let's stay open to surprises, particularly when parts of us are convinced there's no way through to healing. Renae is a Registered Clinical Counsellor and parent (both biological and adoptive) and she uses the P.A.C.E approach - a model developed by Dr. Daniel Hughes which Renae refers to as a "game changer" both personally and professionally. Today she'll walk us through what P.A.C.E. means, how and why it works, and she's even agreed to come back for a bonus episode in follow up to this conversation which will serve as a "lab" of sorts. I'll provide her with some situations and scenarios that come up with kids who have had relationship traumas in their past, and she'll demonstrate how the P.A.C.E. approach would sound like in response. If you want to check out Renae's work, you can find her information HERE.To read more about Dr. Daniel Hughes' approach, go to his website http://www.danielhughes.org/And if you want to learn more about complex trauma and brain development, we'd encourage you to listen to our previous podcast episode {S8E6} with Dr. Chuck Geddes, which you can listen to HERE or wherever you listen to Parenting in the Trenches. If ever there was a deep trench of mud, it's parenting kids who have a history of trauma. We want you to have support and resources to stay well and to help your child find healing. Holding steady with you,Karen

Living with lung cancer is never easy, but finding your lung cancer tribe with other patient advocates can help newly-diagnosed patients harness the power of their own voice in treatment. Hear from LCFA's group of patient advocates about how they got connected through patient groups that helped them learn how to navigate the lung cancer journey. You'll also hear from lung cancer specialist Dr. Raymond Osarogiagbon of Baptist Cancer Center in Memphis, who shares his hopes for the future of lung cancer treatment. Guests: Dr. Raymond Osarogiagbon of Baptist Cancer Center in Memphis, Tennessee LCFA Speakers Bureau members Terri Conneran, Linnea Olson, Ivy Elkins, Yovana Portillo, AJ Patel, Montessa Lee, Gina Hollenbeck, and Frank McKenna Show Notes | Transcription Patients Voices Can Change the Shape of Research In lung cancer research, the patient’s voice matters. Patient advocacy can shape research and can impart to the research community the sense of urgency patients deal with every day. “Patients may not realize just how powerful their voice can be in their own lung cancer treatment plan or in helping others through their journey.” - Kim Norris There has been a real change in lung cancer research that's just happened over the last 10 years or so. When Kim Norris, LCFA’s co-founder and President, first got into lung cancer patient advocacy years ago, the treatments available and the survival rates were not encouraging. Now, there's so many reasons for newly diagnosed patients to be hopeful. Although 5, 10, even 15 years doesn't sound like a long time, in lung cancer research, it's an eternity. More new treatments have been approved in the past five years than have been approved in the last 20 combined. And new discoveries are continually happening at such a rapid pace that is sometimes hard to keep up with them all. Thoracic oncologist Dr. Raymond Osarogiagbon is encouraged by the power of the patient's voice to explain what it means to be living with lung cancer. “We are making a lot of progress in lung cancer, and that is true. And that progress has come very quickly. It seems like literally every few weeks, every few months, there's a new groundbreaking discovery.” LCFA’s Speakers Bureau Discuss Finding Their Tribes At this year’s annual get-together (held virtually) the LCFA’s Speakers Bureau talked about the power of finding your tribe, finding lung cancer patients who share the same experience, and sometimes even the same biomarker. This shared experience often helps newly diagnosed patients find their own voice to advocate for the best treatment plan. As more people are living longer, healthier lives with lung cancer, many find meaning in advocating for others, helping newly diagnosed patients know the right test to get, and the right questions to ask to be part of their own treatment plans. How Patients and Their Tribes Use Their Voices Some turn their advocacy into activism, lobbying for increased lung cancer funding, and raising awareness of lung cancer as the number one cancer killer. Terri Conneran is very actively using her voice by serving on lung cancer advocacy boards, working on events, supporting various foundations, and maintaining a voice for lung cancer patients online. “Those of us in the lung cancer community are living with this silent disease growing within us and we need to give it a voice. If I can help one person, my goal is met.” - Terri Conneran Ivy Elkins has completed Advocate Training through the American Association of Cancer Research. She then created and moderates two Facebook groups – close to 500 members strong – where they share information regarding clinical trials and treatments. Their primary goal is to work as a group to get the attention of lung cancer researchers. However, simply finding a support group is an excellent first step. The Importance of Finding Your Lung Cancer Tribe Members of the LCFA Speakers Bureau share what it means to be living with lung cancer. Some advocates use their anger, frustration, and sadness as motivation for their advocacy. Frank McKenna thinks it's important that lung cancer patients stay involved in things like helping other people. “Even if we don't personally reach out and need that help, I think so many people rely on our experiences and they reach out to us. It's just, I think it's been very rewarding to me when somebody says you've been a godsend because you've given me this information, I can't get it anywhere else.” Voicing the Pros and Cons of Using “Dr. Google” Kim Norris agrees that finding and connecting with other lung cancer patients is much easier today. Patient groups can help them find the right questions to ask and the right test to have done. “Thanks, of course, to a quick Google search. But it helps to know what you’re searching for. Searches like lung cancer survivor stories or KRAS patient groups will generally lead to useful and actionable information that can help patients connect to others going through the same experience, as advocate Terri Conneran learned.” Terri Conneran’s doctor told her to stay off of Google because she's going to see nothing but bad news. Connecting with a local lung cancer group, she learned more about individual biomarkers like EGFR and ALK. This knowledge led to her questioning her doctor regarding biomarkers and the discovery that her cancer has the KRAS biomarker. Speaker Ivy Elkins did a Google search, even though her doctor warned her against that. But she looked for blogs and other people experiencing similar life situations. Yovana Portilla also did a Google search looking for “lung cancer support group” to find other people that have been through this before me for advice along her lung cancer journey. Other Ways To Advocate for Lung Cancer Research Not all lung cancer patients can devote unlimited time to reading journal articles, understanding clinical trial design, and communicating effectively with scientists and physicians. However, there are some effective ways to advocate right from your home. Build a network of support with family members, friends, community members, and fellow advocates living with lung cancer. Find an online community. There are more specific communities advocating for specific lung cancer biomarkers. These are some of the biomarker communities our Speakers Bureau participate in: EGFR Resisters ALK Fusion Facebook Group ALK Positive The ROS1ders KRASkickers There has never been a more important time for the U.S. to invest in medical research. Thanks to bipartisan support in Congress, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has received significant funding increases for the last six years. Monitor important legislation for lung cancer research. On the National Cancer Institute website there are summaries of legislation proposed affecting federal health policy. This page is updated as relevant legislation is introduced. Then contact your Congressional representatives. Ask them to make sustained funding for lung cancer research a national priority starting with funding important lung cancer research policies currently up for legislative approval. This is the first of six lessons that were a summarization of our long Life of Christ study (which took 8 years the first time taught and 12 years the second time). We did something unusual - we studied all four gospel accounts (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) together, chronologically. Using Dr. A. T. Robertson's "Harmony of the Gospels," we took Christ's earthly life one step at a time. One lesson we would be in the Gospel of John; the next lesson in Luke or Mark; sometimes there are events covered by all four gospel writers and sometimes only one was inspired by the Spirit to include an event or a sermon. These six lessons serve as a type of "Jet-Tour" through this long study - so hang onto your hats as we cover a lot of territory!

A Labour MP has criticised a "silly" Wall Street Journal opinion piece telling incoming US First Lady Jill Biden to stop using 'Doctor' at the start of her name. In the op-ed published over the weekend, author Joseph Epstein argued Jill Biden should drop the honorific because she is not a medical doctor but rather earned a doctorate in education. Epstein wrote that her use of the title "feels fraudulent, not to say a touch comic."The op-ed drew ire on Twitter from Biden staffers, supporters, those with doctorates and journalists including at least one from the Wall Street Journal.Biden holds two Master's degrees and a Doctorate in Education.Dr Deborah Russell told Heather du Plessis-Allan that those who have a PhD are entitled to use the honorific. "There is a time and a place for it. I would never use Doctor in the context of getting my bills paid or something like that." She says that in Parliament, a medical doctor or someone with a doctorate is entitled to use the title. Russell says that most people understand the difference between a medical doctor and a doctorate.LISTEN ABOVE
