[spp-player]Gail Straus is mostly retired, meaning that in addition to volunteer work, she remains open to the occasional client project. In 2021, Gail joined the Communications Team at AARP Illinois as a volunteer. She also serves on the Board of Directors for Guest House Chicago, donates time and expertise to the Moran Center for Social Justice in Evanston, is on the Ambassadors Advisory Committee to Steppenwolf Theater Company, and volunteers for the Taproot Foundation.We asked, “How did you become involved with AARP-IL?” Gail was clear of her intent to use her expertise and skills in an organization which would recognize her value as a volunteer. AARP IL's Director of Communication was delighted to tap into her experience. As an active volunteer member of the communications team, she brings insight into connecting marketing and outreach strategies to the most effective communications vehicles. They've invested in building the capacity of schools from kindergarten through college to create welcoming, inclusive institutions that foster the sense of belonging needed to support student success. So when they looked for solutions to increase the participation of Hispanic students in Catholic schools, they proposed outreach, engagement, and communication strategies that went beyond traditional scholarships. ENERGY IN ACTION - EPISODE 072 The Navigation Project Lauren Kopsick and Ivy Braun are the founders of the Healthcare Navigation Project, formerly known as Parent It Forward. This is the first independent public healthcare literacy and life care project for all youth as they transition to adult care. They share their advice for transitional planning after pediatric care. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Can you share what The Healthcare Navigation Project does? We consist of five modules which includes basic healthcare navigation, navigating specialty healthcare, advocating for mental health, let's talk pharmacy and customer care and the future of healthcare. The program starts with basic healthcare navigation-- learning the 27 keywords you need to know and will teach you about developments and changes so patients and families are informed and they can share information with their doctors. This module also teaches patients how to pick a physician, about body language and telephone skills. A script is provided to call a physician's office so they know what questions they need to ask. In another module, we practice calling pharmacists and learning about medications and how to get them. In another module, we call 211, which is the keeper of every service for a state. What are the five guiding principles for advocating? If it doesn't make sense to you, it probably doesn't make sense and you shouldn't stop until you can make sense of it. 2. People are people-- good, bad and indifferent, and you don't have to engage with someone who makes you feel uncomfortable. 3. Research, research and more research. 4. Never give up anything once you have it. 5. The Patient Centered Medical Home. Have you presented to rare disease groups? We are working with the Taproot Foundation which acts as a recruiting firm for nonprofits. They're helping us with a program that will be in January 2023. Patients and users of healthcare are the customers of the healthcare system, so if you're unhappy with a service, you have to push it forward. This week, we invited on PBNM directors John Gagliardi and Judi Bryan to discuss their reasons for going plant-based. Following his own health transformation, John's goal is to educate and inspire others to do the same. John Gagliardi brings not only years of experience in traditional and new media, but also firsthand knowledge of the benefits of plant-based nutrition. In addition to creating and managing content for well-known catalogs and e-commerce sites, he has actively supported numerous non-profit organizations through his work with the Taproot Foundation, a volunteer organization that provides pro bono marketing services to NPOs. Following decades of eating the Standard American Diet (SAD) and experiencing a number of health issues and ballooning weight as a result, it came as a rude awakening when the documentary Forks Over Knives appeared in Judi's queue on Netflix and she decided to watch. Not only did she choose to follow the dietary recommendations in the film, but one by one she saw her health issues vanish…and over the course of about a year, so did 85 lbs. A self-described “jack of all trades, master of none”, she's been able to put in place and still manages the majority of systems we use at PBNM, both public-facing and internal. However, it was found that their broader networks have been decimated.  According to an MIT article, traditional mentoring has been proven not to be terribly effective while mentoring that is based on relationship building reaps better results. Mentoring usually doesn't tend to work well because the workplace is asymmetrical.  When you are looking to make a big change, not just build a x million dollar company, but rather be an integral part of lots of people's lives you need venture capital to get there. The only way you scale as a venture backed business is by building systems and by building a team. As a CEO, you must be the person who plays a major role in defining the vision, creating the company culture and allocating the resources strategically.  Psychology is the biggest economic driver of value. Most successful companies leverage psychology and neuroscience to grow. A good example is Facebook.  The use of psychology to grow businesses has a dark side where businesses can negatively impact and manipulate their customers. Effectively, it almost makes businesses into drug dealers. Regulation is needed to keep the psychological influence of companies under control. In buddhist belief, you are taught to let go of attachment. The concept of legacy can be an attachment. Getting too fixated on legacy may prevent you from focusing on your happiness.  Removing fear from our environments helps us build more meaningful and stronger relationships.  The biggest driver of economic value in 2021 is leveraging psychology to capture the market: “There is a tremendous opportunity, which we've seen across every sector,  to innovate and capture more market by meeting the human need for meaning, the human need for these positive psychological attributes in the market but also exploiting the negative ones...which is the dark side of this whole industry” -  Aaron Hurst (17:57)How does your business leverage psychology to capture the market? Purpose has become more and more a key concept for modern organizations: type ‘Purpose in American business’ into Google, and you’ll get 1,740,000,000 responses, for example. But how real is it? Is it the same as CSR, or giving corporate money to a good cause? And, crucially, what’s its connection—if any—to L&D? Mike Wood is pleased to welcome Aaron Hurst to this week’s show. Aaron is the founder of Imperative, a SAAS platform that helps people understand their purpose. He and Mike chat about how investing in relationships makes work more meaningful. From Volunteering to Pro Bono Work Aaron launched the Taproot Foundation to change volunteerism. Through his foundation, people contributed their professional skills pro bono, instead of just volunteering time. Aaron soon recognized that people were using their pro bono work to get fulfilment in their lives. The challenge, he realized, was how to make work itself more meaningful. He founded Imperative as a solution to this problem. His company created a purpose assessment to help people uncover what brings purpose to them. Imperative also launched a peer coaching platform to help employees align and grow with their organizations. Relationships Matter 150,000 persons have completed the purpose assessment, Aaron says. While just knowing your purpose increases your odds of being fulfilled, Aaron understood that there was still a need for a model to help people live out their purpose on a daily basis. He saw that people who find their work meaningful tend to have good relationships with their peers, a network they can rely on for support, learning and growth. Imperative’s platform allows employees to build those relationships with their peers. Mike agrees that it’s the people you work with who make you stay at a company.  Mental Health Issues Aaron cites statistics that show that 50% - some researchers say up to 75% - of millennial turnover is tied to mental health issues. This is due in part to the fact that many people do not have strong relationships. Mike comments that first jobs are usually a big let down from the lofty expectations of college. “You can get a little bit depressed right out of the workforce,” he says. Social media can add to the depression, especially when you see everyone “living their best life on Facebook” and your life cannot compare. Mike says that we all need to have a supportive network at work to lift us up together. Investing In Relationships Even when your job seems menial, you find it purposeful when you have a great relationship with your peers. Aaron says that if you focus on relationships, it feeds everything else. Today we're interviewing Aaron Hurst, the co-founder & CEO of Imperative, and the author of The Purpose Economy. Aaron has been wired to challenge the status quo from a very early age. He sees opportunity and potential in every direction, and by his own admission is a bit of a troublemaker. During Aaron’s childhood, he moved around a lot and, as a result, he developed the important skill of pattern recognition, a trait that has served him well throughout his entrepreneurial efforts. Early in Aaron’s career, he founded the Taproot Foundation, a pro-bono community of professionals who volunteered their time and expertise to helping mission-driven nonprofits with the marketing, PR, and other important services they need to achieve maximum impact. This community blossomed into a $15 billion marketplace.  Perhaps the most interesting takeaway was the power of purpose that emerged. Aaron would constantly hear about the sense of meaning the participants would feel from helping the nonprofit community. This theme continues today; Aaron and his team at Imperative are focused on unlocking and measuring the power of purpose inside of organizations, not only for the organization, but helping the individual employees inside of organizations to connect their individual purpose to the purpose of the organization. In 2014, Aaron published his book, The Purpose Economy, which predicts the next economic wave will be known as the Purpose Era.
