By now you’ve heard the phrase creator economy. It includes everyone from TikTok stars to Twitch streamers and adult-content creators on sites like OnlyFans. According to one report, more than 50 million people around the world consider themselves creators, and it’s become the fastest-growing type of small business. “The influencer marketing industry is projected to be over a $20 billion business in the next couple years,” said Taylor Lorenz, who covers tech culture and online creators for the New York Times. She's also the author of the forthcoming book “Extremely Online: The Rise of the Online Creator and Creation of a New American Dream.” “For so long, it was really, really, really hard to build tech products for influencers or creators … because tech executives and tech investors really thought of it as a niche market, right? Now, obviously, there’s so many creators, the pandemic kind of pushed everyone online and the industry is, you know, reaches a sort of a maturation point where it makes a lot of money. And so you see the Silicon Valley investors kind of rushing in.” Today, we’re doing the numbers on the creator economy and discuss how it’s not only changing the business world, but also changing how people think about democracy, misinformation, the anti-vaccination movement and, ultimately, whom people trust. MJ (Mary Jane) Grant shares with us how being a proud CODA (Child Of Deaf Adults) defined her life purpose – translating and interpreting the human heart. For MJ, being a CODA wasn't “pain” or “struggle,” but the world is not set up to support deaf people. People would call her parents dumb, and now caring for her mother with dementia, she's risen up to share the very real experience and challenge with others in a documentary. She will open and break your heart and show you how to persevere with joy, grit, and purpose. You will LOVE her and this episode! It's a fact that no one is exempt from going through tough times. More often than we'd like we find ourselves dealing with really difficult situations than can be frustrating and unfair, making us feel powerless. But even though most of us may fall into these negative ways of feeling, we ALSO can find truly meaningful gifts hidden among the adversity. In this episode, MJ and I laugh (she's become a good friend), we cry, we dish on joy and rollerblading and all things to rise up from trauma. Born to two Deaf parents in Sanford, Maine, MJ is a lifelong learner who excels in the daily work of connecting others while opening hearts along the way. She is a proud CODA (Child Of Deaf Adults) and a native user of American Sign Language (ASL), who grew up with a passion for connection and skillful, nuanced communication. MJ has learned, loved and thrived through every chance encounter with the individuals she has met along the way. Her joyful, intuitive nature reflects a warmhearted tenderness and instinctual resilience that emerged early in life and led to a career as a professional sign language interpreter. She has worked with Deaf communities across the U.S. while managing her company, Mary Jane Grant Sign Language Interpreting Services, in between moments of happy chaos at home. In recent years, MJ walked alongside her father, who passed in 2019, after his battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy while being the primary caregiver for her mother who is living with dementia. According to South Korea’s Ministry of Unification, there are more than 30,000 North Korean defectors living in the South. The lack of access to North Korea makes defectors one of the few windows to what life is like in the secretive regime. As a result, the defectors and their stories have become a hugely valuable commodity in South Korea’s popular culture and media. There are a number of popular reality TV programmes starring North Korean defectors. Hyun-joo Yu is one of the most established stars on Now on My Way to Meet You, a popular and long running variety programme. The show features emotional North Korean defectors sharing their stories and performing to dramatic music. At the same time, the South Korean celebrity guests provide commentary and sometimes jokes. Meanwhile, on the Internet, dozens of North Korean defectors have gained popularity through live streaming, telling stories about their lives in the North on YouTube and Instagram. These defector-celebrities, like 21-year-old Nara Kang, are mostly young, attractive women. In this episode, we’re joined by the founders of two innovative U.K.-based companies, cold brew coffee and oat milk brand Minor Figures and non-alcoholic brewery Infinite Session, who detailed their respective strategies for winning at home and abroad. Launched in 2014, Minor Figures is known for its super-premium beverages, pastel packaging and playful illustrations. The brand is widely available in the U.K. and has a significant foothold in Australia along with a small, but expanding, presence in the U.S. In our interview, co-founder Stuart Forsyth spoke about why he describes the package design as an “exercise in restraint,” and why Minor Figures takes a brand-first approach to marketing. He also discussed how the company is leveraging the U.S. coffee community to build awareness and distribution, and how it’s managing growth in three global markets. Later in the episode, we sit down with Chris Hannaway, the co-founder of Infinite Session, which was launched in 2018. The brand has won acclaim and built a loyal following in the U.K. for its full-flavored beer and lighthearted marketing. In our interview, Hannaway spoke about his background in non-alcoholic beverages and the creation of Infinite Session. Walburga “Dolly” Oesterreich was unhappy in her marriage. She and her husband, Fred, were financially successful, but Dolly was bored. One day, Dolly told Fred that her sewing machine was broken. She asked him to send one of his repairmen to fix it. Fred sent 17-year-old Otto Sanhuber. When Dolly answered the door, she was wearing stockings, a silk robe, and not much else. It was the start of a lengthy affair. But when her neighbors asked questions, Dolly was in a pickle. How could she keep cheating on her husband without anyone finding out? Then Brandi tells us about Sharon Kinne, whose life is shrouded in suspicion and mystery. Sharon was just 16 when she met 22-year-old James Kinne. The couple got married quickly, but their happiness didn’t last. On March 19, 1960, James was shot dead in their Independence, Missouri, home. Who could have done it? Sharon had the answer.
