Hollie Girouard, proprietor of Ton's Drive-In and Ton's Downtown joins Discover Lafayette in partnership with Eat Lafayette to discuss her family's multigenerational success in the restaurant business. While Hollie is known for her dedication to Ton's, she is also well-known for her athletic prowess, having been a volleyball player for teams at ESA and UL - Lafayette, the latter of which she graduated from with a degree in Graphic Design. She is a third-generation proprietor of Ton's, following in the footsteps of her hardworking grandparents and parents. Hollie knows the restaurant business inside and out, having grown up in it and working from a young age, as soon as her grandmother gave her permission to clean tables and help out doing whatever was needed. Ton's in Broussard is beloved for its classic American and Cajun comfort food, including fried chicken, hamburgers, and regional favorites. Hollie's grandparents, Rosemary and Alton Girouard, originally opened Ton's in May of 1963. At that time, Rosemary left her job at a downtown Lafayette dress shop to run the restaurant full time. Alton stayed on working for the Lafayette Hardware Store (located then at the corner of Vermilion and Buchanan in downtown Lafayette) during the day, joining Rosemary in the evenings at the restaurant. Their children, Karl and Yvette Girouard, also worked at Ton's, and when Karl married Hollie's mom, Juanita, in 1973, she became an integral part of the family business. Rosemary and Alton Girouard. Hollie Girouard describes her grandmother as "a business woman. She was the heart and soul driving the restaurant. It was her dream." As Ton's attracted more business in the decade after its founding, the restaurant expanded in 1973 to a new location across the street in Broussard in what had originally been Bonin's Bar. Hollie shared that when her grandparents were remodeling the space to accommodate their new restaruant, they paid for the demolition work by giving the beautiful oak bar in Bonin's to the contractor as a payment for services. "The original oak bar is somewhere in New Orleans," says Hollie. The new Ton's restaurant was equipped with a drive-thru window, the first in Lafayette Parish, and also offered indoor dining and outdoor seating. Ton's has maintained many of its original menu items offered from its first day of operation. The chili, seasoning blend, and hamburgers which attracted avid fans still taste the same to someone visiting after forty years away. Hollie says the original pizza pans are now used as pot lids. And many of the employees' families have worked at Ton's over the years; Danielle, the general manager and head cook at the Broussard location, is a third generation employee as her grandmother, Edna, worked with Hollie's grandmother in the early days. Regina, Danielle's mother, worked with Hollie's mother, Juanita, in Ton's second generation of operations. Yvette, Alton, Rosemary, Juanita (holding Hollie) and Karl Girouard. Eat Lafayette honored Ton's Drive-In as it celebrated its 60th anniversary of successful business operations. Pictured are Hollie Girouard along with her parents, Karl and Juanita Girouard. Hollie calls herself "a glorified errand girl, running back and forth between the restaurants. I take my cues from the general managers!" Both restaurants source their food as local as possible, and Hollie says, "The crawfish are always being within 10 miles of the restaurant. We grow things in the garden." The top seller is the burger and plate lunches at the Broussard location have the same rotation each week as people expect the continuity. So on Tuesday, you can expect to see calf liver and onions as a plate lunch option, with the usual classic comfort foods offered each day. Catering is offered and Ton's provides food for sports tournaments, as well individuals looking for great comfort food. "Miss Laura," who has worked at Ton's since before Hollie was born,

Miss Laura joins us today as we share all the deets on Ella's FIRST homecoming experience! We then discuss this whole concept of allowing our kiddos with disabilities to participate in all extracurriculars. OR should I risk it and see them totally enjoy themselves!? I certainly cannot answer that for anyone, but I can cheer you on if you decide to participate or have your kiddo participate. In this month's Miss Laura's Corner... Miss Laura reflects on books and movies that have expanded her beliefe in Body Positivity this month. From Landwale by Jes Baker, The Body is Not an Apology, by Sonya Renee Taylor and attending a showing of the movie Fattitude. For more details on this and many more blogs created by Miss Laura and our hosts at www.bcbcpodcast.com
Background Body Positivity may seem to be a modern movement as the hashtags and Instagram ready photos and images threaten to take over your feeds on a daily basis. The fight for the freedom to love our bodies is older than the internet - going back as long as we have had our bodies. As long as there have been human beings coexisting in groups of 2 or more people there have been ongoing struggles and battles to decide the "best" way or "right way" to be. Historically the battles were not always about the same things. Our ideas of what the perfect body has changed over time. In earlier days it was about the body type that was most likely to survive being run down by a saber-toothed tiger - lean and fast or strong and bulky. In areas where food was scarce, it was a display of wealth or success to have a body that was plump. Long ago in China, it was a symbol of wealth and status to be able to maintain a woman whose feet were bound. In Japan, foot binding was also a practice, specifically for dancers and courtesans. What this means is - the ideal body, the idea of beauty, of body perfection is simply that - a picture. It is not a firm thing, written in stone. It is an ever-changing image - fluid with the times. Today's ideal bodies are described in many terms, including: Gender Identity Race Age Ability Size Hair color Ideal body types are perpetuated by the media, by our stories, by the books we read and by the nature of our lives. Around the world, there are vast ranges of what ideal bodies or beauty is defined as. https://gizmodo.com/photoshop-reveals-how-different-countries-see-body-imag-1724498667 Body Positivity versus Body Liberation There are two semi-parallel, semi opposing movements that can be designated under the body positive movement. Monkey and Miss Laura discuss these two movements in the first Monday Mumbling of August (this aired on August 6 - so check it out). The first is the Body Positive Movement. The second is the Body Liberation Movement. http://queerfatfemme.com/2016/08/29/body-liberation-activism-in-five/ A Brief History I am honestly not sure that anyone could create an accurate timeline of the different cultures globally, and their movement towards body positivity, body liberation, or body acceptance. We absolutely welcome anyone's input on actions that we have missed here. There have been many instances in history where things were done to create and attain an ideal body - that was later determined to be damaging to people in a physical or health or wellbeing manner - or that simply changed for other reasons. We are going to select just a few instances: Feudal Japan Foot Binding - https://heianjapanweb.wordpress.com/2016/10/17/blog-post-title/ This practice started in and around 1000 AD and continued through around 1750 AD. Foot binding originated in the tenth or eleventh century by dancers and courtesans. This was a practice where a young girl's feet were tightly wrapped. This usually caused the bones to break, thus causing extreme pain. There are many aspects to foot binding that relate or go back to social influence. Foot binding was first found to be generally accepted among the elite families. However, later this practice became more common and known throughout society. Mothers started the force this painful...
In our first podcast of August, we are thrilled to chat with Jessamyn Stanley. Miss Laura and the Madame got to sit down and chat with Jessamyn and learn a little more. Jessamyn Stanley is a yoga teacher, body positivity advocate, and writer based in Durham, North Carolina. Jessamyn uses high energy vinyasa flow as a way to move past mental and emotional barriers. Her classes provide a body positive approach to yoga which celebrates students' bodies and encourages them to ask "How do I feel?" rather than "How do I look?" when practicing yoga. About this episode... What a Summer Break...?!?! We sort of took a break and while we were not working as hard, we were working ever HARDER!!!... In this episode, the Professor, Madam, Miss Laura, and Monkey pull back the curtain and talk about everything we have been working on and things that are only making the BCBC show even better in the coming months.
In this episode... Recently Laura and Monkey attended a book reading of the play, The Rape of the Sabine Women by Gace B Matthias. It was dark, it was funny, it was touching, moving, and amazing... Listen to what Miss Laura thought... www.bcbcpodcast.com
In this episode... Miss Laura and The Madam talk about the definitions of sex, body, gender positivity and discuss the issues. www.bcbcpodcast.com
Another Nugget with Monkey and Miss Laura. What about Freedoms in the US and around the world. Just some things to consider. www.bcbcpodcast.com
In this episode... Monkey and Miss Laura talk about what it means when Hatred thrives Where Love is Silent. A lot has happened recently and we wanted to give people ideas on how to make their lives, the lives around them, and even ways to think about making a stand and helping others in areas they are passionate about.
About this episode... Miss Laura and Monkey are super excited to meet today with Eva Sweeney. Before we start we have a couple of notes to go over with you. First, this episode may have some longer pauses due to the communication styles - just be patient dear listeners - we promise it is worth it. Second, this interview is recorded over a speakerphone to accommodate Eva's needs so it may be a bit noisier than you are used to - again - it is still worth it! We did some things in the audio edit to minimize this but it still happens! And now, on to the show… Eva Sweeney is a gender queer disabled person who works as a sex educator and freelance writer. She writes a lot on topics around sex, disability, and queer culture. She is joined by her assistant, Cameron who voices for Eva. Eva would like people to know she is just a normal person and is not at all inspirational just for getting out of bed. Eva has cerebral palsy, which for her means she uses a wheelchair to get around and she speaks by using a laser pointer mounted to her head and a letter board. This board is read by whoever she is speaking to or her aide. She needs assistance with almost all physical functions. She is in control of her life - she just needs a little help. For this interview, she pre-wrote out the answers to many of the questions. For any follow-up questions, you will hear her aide help her as she uses the board to respond. Eva shares her ideas on maintaining a positive body image - and discusses how she does not conform to the "mainstream" and responds with "Fuck that - I am hot!". She is overflowing with self-confidence. As far as advice to people on maintaining a positive body image - Eva says "Just be yourself and don't give a fuck what other people think of you." One final message from Eva - "Just stay open minded." About Eva Sweeney Eva Sweeney is a 35-year-old genderqueer disabled female who works primarily as a sex educator and freelance writer. Her topics include disabilities and sex, gender, and queer culture. She is also the creator of the documentary, Respect: The Joy of Aides. She has been doing Sex and Disability workshops for 15 years and started doing this work because she found a huge lack of good sex positive information for people with disabilities. Eva wrote the book Queers on Wheels and has traveled the country giving workshops about Sex and Disability. She is also available for private consultations.Where to Find Eva... You can find Eva on O.School, on Facebook, and her new website: http://calendar.o.school/devops/detail/298/1515193200000 https://www.facebook.com/crippingupsexwitheva/ http://crippingupsexwitheva.com/ https://www.facebook.com/crippingupsexwitheva/
About this episode... Julie Christensen is back in this episode and chats with Monkey and Miss Laura about PTSD as a form of disability and why it may impact people in their health, well being and sexual sense of well being. To start, PTSD is defined as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. This is a mental health condition that is triggered by exposure to a terrifying event, even a life-threatening event. Symptoms of PTSD may include avoidance, hypervigilance, being afraid of things, nightmares, flashbacks re-experiencing things, and feeling disconnected from others and even from yourself. There are of course more symptoms - these are just a few. There is also a complex PTSD that results from years of exposure to unhealthy relationships or sexual abuse or other situations. Some people are aware they have PTSD, and many others are not aware, even having repressed memories of the traumatic events that lead to PTSD. About Julie... Julie Christensen is a licensed marriage and family therapist and a frequent flier with the BCBC show. Julie is a therapist at It's Possible Therapy who specializes in: Grief Trauma Mood Disorders Anxiety Disorders Spirituality Holy Fire Reiki Healing Contact Julie... It's Possible Therapy Julie Christensen, M.A., L.M.F.T Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist 3175 Sunset Blvd, Suite 107H Rocklin CA 95677 Phone/Text: 916-276-4354 Email: Julie@itspossibletherapy.com Show notes... Julie goes into a few ways to identify PTSD within yourself and within others. These are only a few possibilities - please note that this is in no way a stand-in for seeking professional assistance. When looking in a sexual context, Julie suggests that your partner may notice things if you are suffering from PTSD - lack of enjoyment, orgasm, response, and more. Monkey asked Julie about how someone can help a partner, friend, or loved one to identify and work with PTSD. She encourages communication between all the parties, offering couples therapy, taking online tests, and additional modes of communication. PTSD was formerly identified only as associated with military experiences - although now it is much more widely identified as a real and serious issue. There are a lot more tools to identify problems and to treat PTSD. Julie is a big fan of EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. EMDR is a psychotherapy treatment that was originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories by applying bilateral stimulation to release memories and help rewrite those memories. This can take those memories from a traumatic rating of 10 down to a 0 and remove the trauma associated forever. Other alternative treatments like LSD were addressed. LSD treatments were actually historically for...
About this episode... In our final nugget for the April monthly topic of Sex workers, Miss Laura chats with Michael - a member of the kink community, a Shibari rigger, and someone who has worked on photo shoots in and around the sex work industry for many years. He also identifies as a wolf in our barnyard - believing these animals to amazing, social, and are protective and loyal in their packs. He has always respected wolves - knowing they do what is best for their family. Side note: Shibari is intricate rope bondage using some traditional Japanese techniques and of course a few modern twists. Michael considers himself to be a part of the sex worker community through his rigging for photo shoots, creating promotional pieces for cam girls and others who are working, as well as someone who has dated and is involved with several people who work in that industry. He shares a few of his experiences with partners in the sex work industry. A commonly heard sentiment in many of our episodes across a range of topics, he cites that communication is a key in any relationship to making things work, especially when you are involved with someone working in the sex trade. He suggests that you need to be able to communicate clearly with them, especially since part of their job is to be intimate with others - to make sure you understand where you stand in their life and they are able to clearly communicate where you stand and what they need from you to support them. This is critical in dealing with any jealousy issues that can come up. A little about Michael... I've been a part of the BDSM community of the San Francisco Bay Area for a very long time. If you want background on my various kinks and fetishes, I can tell you that all of the stories will start with "So there was this girl..." I have been a shibari rigger, working with rope and using it to bring accentuate the beauty of the human form for somewhere around ten years, and have trained with Two Knotty Boys and with Midori. I've taught shibari classes. I've tied for photo shoots and had my rope work find it's way into a magazine or two (including a horror magazine) and onto the front page of the now unfortunately defunct zivity.com. Around seven years ago, "there was this girl" who had something of a fetish for hypnosis, and the erotic applications of it, so being quite smitten with her, as well as intrigued with hypnosis and fascinated with the human mind, I went off and got certified as a hypnotist. Well, the relationship didn't last, but hypnosis (especially its erotic and BDSM applications, but also the things that I could use it for to help those I cared about) kept my attention, became something of a passion of mine. I've gone so far as to seek certification as a clinical hypnotherapist. I help with a quarterly Goth/Industrial dance club and BDSM dungeon down in Santa Cruz California called "House of Nox". While my housemates are either spinning a set at the turntables, doing a tarot card reading, or perhaps playing with someone on the spanking bench or St. Andrew's Cross, I can be found with my portable suspension frame, 700+ feet of rope, and various toys, tying people up or working them over with a violet wand. I really enjoy...
We are just a few days away from the Creative Event of the Year!!! AFCI’s Creativation starts this coming week, where thousands of creative geniuses will descend upon the Phoenix Civic Center in my home town of sunny Arizona for a week long creative fun fest. Full of learning, new products, friends, laughter and Javi Hours. Plus, yours truly will be speaking at 3 of their education workshops on Thursday and Friday, which I am quite excited about. If you are going to Creativation this year, you definitely need to let me know so we can plan a fun meet up! I am already working on Lesley’s Junior Mint Stash and Miss Laura from Crafty Not Shifty is totally hooking me up with Galaxy Hot Chocolate! I just love my crafty British friends. My favorite part of Creativation is being able to actually hug the incredible people I have interacted with on social media over the years. It always surprises me that I actually have never MET them, because it feels like we have been friends for ages. It truly is a surreal experience that I cherish. If you are planning on going to Creativation this year or in the future, there a few things to take into account before going. Regardless of whether or not you have been before. First things first, WHY are you attending? Are you going to purchase items for your shop? Are you hoping to make connections with manufacturers? Do you want to learn more about the industry and how you can grow your business? Is this an excuse to hang out with friends? Are you trying to expand your business by getting your products in front of buyers? Do you have plans to increase your social media reach and become an influencer within the creative industry? What is your purpose? What do you hope to get out of the event? Have you set goals for yourself? Maybe you are going just so you can experience a Stamp Junkie Javi Hour. Or you are using Creativation as a hard deadline for your special So Suzy Peacock Tote from Simply Charming Bags. Whatever your reason, know your WHY! The reason your why is so important is to help direct you during the craze of the event. If you are just there for the sake of going, there is a good chance you will be disappointed and disillusioned. Which is never fun. You could also inadvertently cause mayhem to someone else’s trip and that is just not cool. For example, Lesley Oman from Heffy Doodle is flying in from the UK for her very first Heffy Doodle Creativation booth in the hopes that she gets her stamp line in retail shops around the world. She has spent money on the trip, her booth and her goal is to sell her product. BUT let’s say that those people who are going just for the socializing, descend upon her booth and spend the entire weekend chit chatting with her. Lesley’s time is spent socializing with fans, instead of selling her stamps to buyers. The buyers are frustrated because they can’t purchase items for their shop, Lesley is disappointed because she didn’t make the sales she needed to justify her trip and Heffy Doodle customers do not benefit from their favorite stamps being in local shops. This scenario is a very real one and I have heard the frustration first hand from vendors as well as buyers. Not to say that the influencers, bloggers, fans and new followers aren’t important, because they are! They are what helps to drive demand, but there is a time and a place for everyone. And it’s up to you influencers, to be conscientious and courteous to the vendors and buyers. If you see someone with a buyer’s badge come up to the booth you are at, be polite and allow them to interact and talk with the people at the vendor booth you are in. With that being said, there is a time and place for everything and success is there for all. Which is why knowing your WHY is essential. I highly recommend taking the next few days and think about your WHY, write it down and think about how you can achieve the goals that come from your why. This will help you keep your focus and ensure that Creativation is a success for you and your purpose. If you have never been to Creativation, Thursday and Fridays are education days. It’s going to be a lot of learning, giddiness when you see your favorite crafting celebrity from afar and excitement when you meet your friends for the first time. This is also the perfect time to set up times to meet, have lunch, coffee, happy hours and dinners. Just be aware that some people are going to be so busy and absorbing all that Creativation has to offer that it may be hard to nail down a specific time. So, don’t become frustrated. Saturday, the doors open to the showroom floor and it is INSANE! Booths are packed, people are everywhere, everyone is trying to spy the latest “hot” item, phones are recording, pictures are being snapped and selfie sticks are out. A lot of vendors will have an opening day show special for buyers. If you are a buyer, use your Creativation app, plot out the booths you want to hit FIRST. Keep in mind they are going to be jam packed and busy, so plan your most important vendor first. Go directly to the booth, do not dawdle, just go. If you are there to mingle, socialize and make connections, I suggest you walk the whole floor, look at the booths, see what is going on and stay in background. Let the vendors and buyers have their moment. Check out the smaller booths, maybe the lesser known companies, who don’t have people in their spaces. See what they have to offer, take the pictures, post them on social media. Help get their message and products out there. By midday, things will start to settle down and this is your time to check out the new products, introduce yourself to your favorite companies, just a quick into. Keep it short, make your own personal notes of the products, people and companies that interest you for later on in the weekend. Sunday the showroom floor starts to die down a bit, especially in the afternoon. If you are there to make the connections and see your favorite companies, this is the best time to scoot in their booths, to get the selfies, to say hello. Check out all of the cool new toys, post pictures on social media, share what you are excited about. Monday, oh my! This is HEAVEN! The showroom floor is typically super chill and regardless of your reason for going, THIS is the day your magic will happen. Buyers, take advantage of the quietness to really talk to the vendors, to place your order, to go over marketing ideas with the designers and see what else they may have to help out your shop. Influencers, go back and reconnect to those companies you are interested in. Take pictures, post them on social media, tag the company, talk to them about guest designer spots or becoming an ambassador for them. Create a special photo album on your phone for your sample work so you can show them without having to zip past kid and pet photos. Make sure you take one of their business cards and send them an email to thank them for their time. If you took a selfie with them, include the photo in the email so they can put a face to the name. Things are crazy and everyone’s brains go to mush after the event. Don’t expect them to remember EXACTLY who you are. Help them out by sending the photo and a recap of what you spoke about. For the social butterflies, you can help everyone out by communicating your excitement. If you are talking to random people and new-found friends, tell them which companies are your favorite, the booths that are super cool and nifty new products that you saw. Post those on social media, tag the people and companies. The more exposure you give the event, vendors and people you meet, the more successful it becomes. Be the excitement! Build the enthusiasm! Share the epic coolness you find! Creativation has so much to offer to so many and it is a wonderful excuse for companies to come together and meet the people who have been on their design teams over the years. This was definitely my favorite part of going, being able to give Martha Lucia a huge hug, seeing Stephanie Ackerman, being surprised meeting Jenny Johnson, scaring the living daylights out of Kymona Tracey, shopping with Jennifer Loftfield, plotting with Justine Hovey and laughing uncontrollably with Josefine Fourage. Meeting in person the women who helped build So Suzy Stamps. If you are a stamp company and you are meeting your design team for the first time, make the time to say hi. Even if it is just for a moment, hug them and tell them how important they are to you and your company. It may not always be possible, but if you can see about getting together for a group photo. This may be nearly impossible with everyone’s schedule, but I really wish I had done this in the past. Let’s face it, this may be one of the rare opportunities a lot of you are in the same room together. Justine Hovey put together a special Facebook Group for people who are attending Creativation this year as a way to find out who all was going and schedule times for people to meet up. If you are going and would like to join the group, we will have a link in the show notes or you can search for it under Stampers going to AFCI/Creativation. It’s a great way to find out who is going in your craft circle before the event instead of after! Plus, it will be the easiest and fastest way to find out where and when Javi hour will be! I was so excited to learn that Miss Dayna is flying in from Hawaii for Creativation and she was asking what to do on her long flight to the mainland and I am going to recommend that all of you take some time this weekend or on your flight to Phoenix, to think about your Why, write down the reason you are going to Creativation, what your goals are for the event, make a list of people who you would like to meet and try to schedule some time with those on your priority list. It's going to be a fun filled time and for those of you going, I can’t wait to see you!! Until next time, this is Suzanne, and you have been listening to the So Suzy Podcast. Happy Stamping!

Beginners. On Mondays, Domini has her music class after her normal preschool curriculum. It is an extra class that has been added on to the end of the morning, so children can learn a few things about the world of music. She has enjoyed it immensely this year. There are only a few children in the class, but they are all buddies, and they have certainly learned a lot. The teacher, Miss Laura, told us that the last day of class would be party day. Parents were invited to join in the fun and to see what the children had learned during the year. We sat in the sunny playing area of the school while teacher Laura got out all the goodies from her basket: cookies, apple juice, instruments, cards, and colorful scarves. She had everything planned. The children started by parading around, waving the scarves to a certain beat. Then she read a story about a bear which rhymed. Musical notes came next. And finally, the children told us about composers. We finished off the party with juice and cookies while we sat in the sun and chatted. Unfortunately, teacher Laura won't be back next year. I'm sure Domini will miss her. Grammar notes. Preterite: to sit (sit, sat, sat), to get (get, got, got)* american = gotten, to tell (tell, told, told). Exs: He sat and waited for the train, but when it came, he had fallen asleep. I finally got the shoes I wanted. I had to wait until the end of the season for them to go on sale. I told him to be careful with the china. Well, there's another plate in the bin! Advanced. My calendar has lots of check marks. They have been put there by my children who are counting the days until the long, long vacation starts. In many schools, teachers are wrapping up their classes and giving parties for the end of term. My daughter, who is still in preschool, had a party the other day. I was lucky enough to attend. It was an unusual party, a music party. She has been doing a music class once a week in her little preschool called Seeds. The curriculum was called Music and Me ABC. Each week the teacher read them stories that had something to do with music. They would move and dance to different types of music, and learn about music symbols, rhythm, and even composers. Sometimes, when I would turn up to pick up my daughter, they would still be finishing up the class. At the end of each class, they sing a "goodbye" song that has a great beat. Each child would be sitting on the floor, cross legged, swaying to the music, and singing along with the teacher. They would also have a special treat most weeks of being able to take home a percussion instrument. Great for the kids, - not so great for the parents! Grammar notes. Useful vocabulary and phrases: to count the days, curriculum, to turn up, to finish up. Exs: I am counting the days until the ballet. I can't wait to see it! I am not very pleased with the school. It's curriculum is old fashioned and limited. We were waiting at the restaurant for almost an hour! She turned up as we were leaving! Please finish up the dessert. It won't keep until tomorrow.
