Welcome to episode 499 of the Outdoor Adventure Lifestyle Podcast. Today, I'm talking with Casey Hanisko. Casey is a distinguished leader in adventure travel. She's the former President of the Adventure Travel Trade Association and an executive coach helping tourism leaders navigate change. Recognized among the "50 Most Important Women in Travel," she shares her expertise through media, speaking engagements, and her "Leading Naturally" newsletter. Show Notes Casey Hanisko Linkedin Guest Focus Instagram Adventure Travel Trade Association The Leap That Terrified Me More Than Any Business Decision (And What It Taught Me About Leadership) Ever stood at the edge of something terrifying—knowing the only way forward is to leap, but every cell in your body is screaming, Nope? That was me on a canyon swing in Interlaken. Spoiler: I needed a push. You think making high-stakes decisions in business is tough? Try standing on the edge of a 300-foot drop, debating whether plummeting into the abyss is a good idea. There's a moment in adventure—and in leadership—where hesitation creeps in. Your palms sweat. Your mind races. And sometimes, you need someone to give you that push. What Happened: I'd like to think I'm pretty fearless. I've hiked, biked, and paddled my way through some of the world's most stunning (and challenging) landscapes. But nothing—not rock climbing, not waterfall jumping, not even running a business—prepared me for the sheer terror of standing on the edge of a canyon swing in Interlaken. Picture this: I'm perched on the platform, strapped in, heart pounding. My entire executive team—yes, the people I work with—are watching. The guy running the swing looks at me and asks, “Need a push?” ABSOLUTELY NOT! I sit there for two full minutes, locked in a battle with my own fear. Every rational thought in my brain says, Just do it. But my body? Oh, my body says, Are you out of your mind?! Then, the guy places a hand on my back. Just enough pressure to remind me: I either take the leap myself, or I'm going anyway. And that was it. I went. Terrified. Screaming. And, once I hit the swing… laughing. Principle: That moment on the canyon swing? It's leadership in a nutshell. Leadership requires courage. Sometimes, you're at the edge of a big decision, knowing you need to move—but fear holds you back. Sometimes, you need support. That guiding hand (or well-placed nudge) from someone who sees your potential, even when you doubt yourself. And often, the thing you dread most? Ends up being the most exhilarating experience of your life. Whether it's taking the leap into a leadership role, starting that business, or stepping into unknown territory—you're going to feel fear. That's normal. The key is to recognize it, hold it, and move forward anyway. Transition: The problem is, most people let fear stop them. They overthink. They hesitate. They tell themselves they need more time, more preparation, more certainty. But here's the truth: the perfect moment? It doesn't exist. Too many outdoor entrepreneurs and leaders stall out waiting for the “right time” to make their next move—whether that's scaling a business, stepping into leadership, or launching that dream trip. That's Why: That's why, in this episode of The Outdoor Adventure Lifestyle Podcast, I sat down with Casey Esco—executive coach, adventure leader, and all-around expert on navigating uncertainty in business and the outdoors. She shares exactly how adventure can teach us to embrace risk, push through hesitation, and build the courage to lead (even when you're scared out of your mind). Call to Action: If fear has ever held you back from making a move—whether in your career, your business, or even your next adventure—you need to hear this episode. Because courage isn't about being fearless. It's about taking the leap anyway. #Outdoor Adventure, #Podcast, #Adventure Travel, #Leadership, #Coaching, #Outdoor Activities, #Nature, #Curiosity, #Camping, #Hiking, #Strategic Planning, #Storytelling, #Diversity, #Women Leaders, #Inclusivity, #Nature Inspired Coaching, #Outdoor Brands, #Business Strategy, #Personal Growth, #Passion, #Wellness, #Travel Experiences, #Adventure Community, #Outdoor Lifestyle, #Networking, #Conservation, #Adventure Stories

Get ready for a very special new episode, dropping FRIDAY, January 13th, with an exclusive interview with Supermodel and Life Coach Emme!    So, FRIDAY the 13th is actually your lucky day! Because your favorite personal stylist  Holly Katz, is expanding her focus on CELEBRATING WOMEN-OWNED BRANDS and WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS on the podcast - all year - this year!  #Yaaaaaasssss!    And who better to PUMP US UP with confidence and wisdom than our new BFFF (Best Fashion Friend Forever), than supermodel and fashion mold-breaker, EMME?!     After three decades empowering women and influencing (shapeshifting / disrupting) the worlds of fashion and beauty, Emme has all this experience and more to share!    We are all about Fashion Over 40 - and we mean, WAAAAAYYY over 40.  So, it is perfect timing that EMME sits down with Holly to talk about loving who you are - no matter what stage of life you are in.    LISTEN HERE!    About EMME:   Emme has been a trusted voice in the fashion, wellness, beauty, and news industries for more than 20 years, and she is widely regarded as a trailblazing social reformer for women's empowerment and positive body image. She is the founder of the True Beauty Foundation, whose mission is to enhance young people's mental wellness.     Emme's passion is to "feel extraordinarily free in our bodies and live our most inspired lives possible" as a TV personality, brand spokesperson, TV and podcast host, consultant, author, Revlon spokeswoman, keynote speaker, and creative director of her clothing lines (EMME®, mebyEMME®, and TrueBeautybyEMME®).    Emme was chosen twice for People Magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People," and Ladies' Home Journal named her one of the "Most Important Women in America" and one of the "Most Fascinating Women of the Year."     In 2018, Oprah Magazine dubbed her the "Godmother of the Full-Figured Industry." Emme is also a TEDx speaker. She has also been recognized as one of the "Women of the Year" by Glamour Magazine and one of the "25 Most Influential Women" by Biography magazine.     So, now you know that EMME is a BFD.  (If you need to Google that, then go ahead.) But this girl knows fashion. And she knows women's fashion over 40...and how to love living in your own skin after 40.   Join us for a delightful, enlightening and refreshing conversation about loving the woman that you are. Not what you see on Instagram. Not the one you see in photoshopped images in magazines. Not what the trends tell you to be.     In Emme's words:    “I love finding joy within the honoring of my body and all that it can do. I love being in fashion, being able to be involved in fashion and wearing trend-appropriate fashion. I was also an athlete growing up, so I love being out and about and being fit.”    Emme has written a book and done TV shows, and it's all around honoring the body, all the different shapes and sizes and colors and all that we are - and not listening to voices that dictate that “you should be this way, or you should be that way.”     “I don't want to feel like I am “less-than” every single step of my life. I want to feel infused with joy. That is it. It's an inward journey to tap in, tune in and turn on to that.”    “So, when you hear messaging on the outside, when you hear conversations around the dinner table, when you hear cocktail party discussions, or you see billboards and your image - or your friends' images - are not reflected in the ideas of beauty, just know that deep down inside, that if you're rocking your life and you're in it to win it, that's the best place to be, instead of trying to change yourself.”  EMME    MKAYYY, #PREACCHHH     For instance, one day, you might not have a big butt and then suddenly the trend is that you need to have a bigger butt.  So, you run out and try and get one.  Or, the next day you need to have a certain hairstyle, so blah, blah, blah. Don't spend time being something you're not.    From her early days in journalism to becoming the first plus-size supermodel to becoming a life coach, EMME's journey is one all women can relate to.     She has broken every rule and every mold that women have been forced to believe for decades – and then – she walked New York Fashion Week runway in her 50s for Chromat - in lingerie - no less!   (Or, very much less!) This is GIVING. US. LIFE.   Her inspiring, nurturing and thoughtful approach to being body-positive, to tapping into to her female super-powers and spreading human happiness, is just a beyond refreshing conversation to hear. You'll want to save this one.   Listen, review, SHARE and enjoy this soul-comforting episode wherever you get your podcasts.     FASHION CRIMES PODCAST  “The Best Fashion Friend You Never Knew You Needed!”    Hosted by your favorite personal stylist, Holly Katz!  www.fashioncrimespodcast.com

Derek Cross chats with Alice Moon about her bout with CHS;Alice Moon is a cannabis entrepreneur living in Los Angeles, California. Her career in cannabis started in 2011 as a trimmer and budtender. While working at a dispensary, Moon wrote edible reviews to help consumers make informed purchasing decisions. Her blog led to edible sales at the dispensary tripling. Moon quickly discovered that consumers with dietary restrictions had trouble finding edibles that suited their needs, so she spent 2 years working on a solution to this problem. In 2017 she launched Swallow, The World's Largest Edible Directory, which was coined “The Yelp of Edibles”. The web app helped consumers find the right edible for them based on dietary restrictions (vegan, gluten free, sugar free, etc), location, and reviews. Swallow was nominated Best Tech at the Dope Magazine 2017 SoCal Awards. Moon self funded the company and lacked the resources to scale and perfect the tech, so she ultimately shut down the company at the end of 2017. In 2018, Moon was diagnosed with Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome and had to cease cannabis use completely. This led to her shifting her career towards Public Relations and Event Production. In May 2018, she co-produced and co-hosted the California Cannabis Awards, which was the first cannabis event to be held at LA Live. From October 2018 to April 2019, Moon worked as Director of Public Relations for ParagonSpace, a coworking space for the cannabis industry. What type of thoughts would be going through your head at that moment? Would you be worried about outbursts of violence? As it turns out, thousands of Americans have been locked up for years for merely possessing a certain amount of cannabis at the time of their arrest. When Wanda James learned this was part of her brother’s story - she was filled with rage. Instead of letting her anger drive her to a negative place - she decided to harness that anger and turn it toward social justice. Today, Wanda is a champion and advocate for criminal justice reform and full legalization of cannabis across the nation.  When you look back on your childhood, what stands out? Do you remember all the things you had and special treats you received or do you remember the way you felt and the people who you grew up around? While you might think that children grow up with an acute sense of their family’s financial situation - the truth is - many never notice until adulthood. Wanda James remembers calling up her father while she was attending college to complain that she never realized that they were poor. Wanda’s father quickly corrected her and explained that they were often “Broke”, but they weren’t poor - poor is a mindset. Did you have a similar experience to Wanda’s childhood? How did you respond when you realized the financial situation of your family growing up?  Why would someone change gears and go from a successful career in the business world and restaurant industry and decide to work in an industry that the federal government still considers “Illegal.” To many, Wanda and her husband, Scott’s affinity for cannabis can as a surprise, and they were quickly warned that this foray into cannabis would destroy their career. Thankfully, the naysayers were wrong - Wanda and Scott’s businesses increased and expanded due to cannabis legalization in Colorado. Leveraging their experience as uses and advocates of cannabis, Scott and Wanda enjoy a loyal following as they continue the effort to see cannabis legalized nationwide. How did she go about creating her brand while working as a model? Has it gotten easier these days with social media?
