Hal Leonard, the world's largest sheet music and music education publisher, and music innovators Muse Group, launch MuseClass, an assignment, grading, and music content platform set to transform instrumental teaching (grade 6-12) in the U.S. MuseClass allows music educators and band directors to share, collect, and grade assignments on an easy-to-use platform, which also contains a curated library of educational content. Students receive assignments through the MuseClass app (available on iOS, Android & Chromebook), and can submit their progress as video or audio recordings, or upload worksheets.  One notable MuseClass feature is AutoGrade, the AI-powered practice tool. This pioneering technology listens to a student's performance and provides immediate feedback on timing and pitch, even for polyphonic instruments like piano or guitar. The tool can inspire students to repeat their practice sessions, or a teacher can set an AutoGrade challenge as an assignment. At launch, MuseClass includes free digital content from Hal Leonard's iconic Essential Elements, the gold-standard curriculum for bands and strings in the U.S. now available in concert with next-generation digital tools for the first time. The content library is set to rapidly expand in the coming school year with pedagogical scores and method books drawn from Hal Leonard's exclusively licensed, premium arrangements — current titles span everything from Taylor Swift and The Beatles to John Williams and Disney soundtracks. Teachers can also compose their own exercises or worksheets with MuseScore Studio, Muse Group's award-winning, intuitive notation software. The platform is completely free for all schools until August 1 2025 and will continue to be developed with close feedback from music educators. In year two, MuseClass remains free for teachers, with a $15.99 annual cost per student and custom offerings for school districts. MuseClass marks the first major release since Hal Leonard joined digital-content and technology leader Muse Group last year, with a shared vision to provide unparalleled access to the best resources to music makers worldwide. The new MuseClass reworks a Muse Group prototype, which is transformed with the addition of Hal Leonard's content catalog and unparalleled 70 years of experience collaborating with U.S. educators. The AutoGrade tool within MuseClass is the next step in the evolution of Muse Group's machine learning listening technology. In September 2023, the iPad app StaffPad launched ‘Piano Capture,' a feature that hears real piano performances and converts them into readable sheet music — technology recently spotlighted in Apple's M4 chiplaunch. In January 2024, the same capability was deployed in Ultimate Guitar's Practice Mode, extending this breakthrough technology to millions of digital music makers. Now in MuseClass' AutoGrade, a whole generation of young learners can enjoy the benefits of practicing and improving instrumental skills with AI-guidance. In the future, the MuseClass feature set and content library is set to expand based on the evolving needs of U.S. teachers — including print offerings for band leaders and Google Classroom integration. MuseClass software for Kindergarten to Grade 6 educators and for regions outside the U.S. is also coming soon.  MuseClass is available now, and completely free to get started in 2024. ‍

Introduction Hosts: MrX Dave Morriss We recorded this on Saturday May 20th 2023. We met in person again, and as before first visited the pub called The Steading where we had lunch. Then we adjourned to Dave's Citroen car (Studio C) in the car park, and recorded a chat. The region where we met is close to a village called Hillend, which led to the show title. Topics discussed ChatGPT: MrX did two shows in May using ChatGPT. He has used it more than Dave has. MrX has an iPhone and can use ChatGPT from it. He uses it as a source of information when out and about. For instance, to find out about the history of Musselburgh Harbour. MrX has also used ChatGPT to write experimental Python scripts. There is a TED talk by Greg Brockman, the inventor of ChatGPT. Discussion of the Call Annie app ELIZA the program that was written in the 1960s and simulated conversation well enough to convince people. Audacity/Tenacity audio editors: Web sites: Audacity and Tenacity. Audacity Wikipedia page MrX and Dave have both used Audacity for several years. Audacity was forked after it was taken over by Muse Group, and Tenacity was developed. However, it doesn't seem that there have been any releases on Tenacity to date. The most recent versions of Audacity have contained changes - in particular the way the audio project is stored has changed. Instead of a directory filled with various files there is now a single project file with the extension .aup3 which is a SQLite database. This was changed in March 2021 for Version 3.0. Previously Audacity stored the project as a file called .aup and a directory called _data/ containing sub-directories and files. MrX reports changes in the way multiple tracks are handled. Dave finds that the horizontal scrollbar has disappeared (which seems to be a bug). Dr John Campbell: YouTube channel During the COVID-19 epidemic the channel contained a lot of information about the SARS-CoV-2 virus, vaccines, disease, treatments, etc, which seemed to be helpful and well researched. At one point there was a lot of talk about Ivermectin as a drug that could help with the disease, but although this received no support from scientific research, it seemed to be receiving more and more exposure on the channel. From then on the quality of the content on the channel seemed to deteriorate, and it no longer seems trustworthy. Other sources have been critical, including Debunk the Funk with Dr Wilson The Doctor Who Exhibition: Dave met with Andrew Conway and Andrew's friend, and all went to the exhibition held at the National Museum of Scotland. The exhibition contained a lot of Doctor Who memorabilia, including some original props. MrX and the group that went to the exhibition have all watched Doctor Who over the years. All have lost interest at some point but then resumed, particularly after the show was restarted in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper. Discussion about the BBC Radiophonic Workshop where the Doctor Who sound effects were made as well as the signature tune. Also the Mellotron, a keyboard that played tape loops. Mechanical musical instruments: The Swedish band Wintergatan use mechanical instruments in their music and Martin Molin, a band member is responsible for some of them. He did a series on YouTube about mechanical instruments: Music Machine Mondays at the Museum Speelklok in Utrecht which is great to watch if you are interested. Dave also mentioned musical instrument museums in Berlin and Brussels. MrX mentioned a museum in Dalbeattie, a town in Dumfries and Galloway in the Scottish Borders. In the museum there had been a chance to play a barrel organ. YouTube channels: Dave: (Mentioned earlier) Debunk the Funk with Dr Wilson - the host, Dan Wilson, has a Ph.D. in molecular biology that covers bad science while making good science accessible. The channel focuses mainly on pseudoscience surrounding the anti-vaccine movement and COVID misinformation. Little Chinese Everywhere - Yan is a Human Geographer who studied in Switzerland. The first season was “The Longest Way Back Home (Switzerland to China)” where she travelled over land to China. She is now producing videos for season 2 about China itself. She plans to visit every province in mainland China and make videos. Dave mentioned the episode about Yanjin City in Yunnan. It is mentioned in Wikipedia as the “World's Narrowest City”, either side of the narrow Heng River valley, a tributary of the Yangtze. MrX: Ron Mattino - a channel dedicated to electronics, programming and engineering. Mentioned episode about the pins on a smartphone battery: Why do MOBILE BATTERIES have THREE terminals? A simple Explanation. Links Artificial Intelligence: ChatGPT TED talk by Greg Brockman Call Annie application ELIZA early chatbot Audio editing: Audacity web site Audacity Wikipedia page Tenacity web site Science misinformation: Dr John Campbell's YouTube channel Doctor Who: BBC Radiophonic Workshop Mechanical musical instruments: Music Machine Mondays Museum Speelklok Berlin music museum Brussels music museum Dalbeattie museum YouTube: Debunk the Funk with Dr Wilson Little Chinese Everywhere Ron Mattino

Qual será o futuro do Audacity? Apple Podcasts Drama Continues

Welcome in, I'm Jon Gay. I try not to cover the same topic in consecutive weeks, but I had to start with an update on the biggest story in podcasting right now - the disastrous rollout of the changes to Apple Podcasts.  And just to check....yup.... you can STILL hear Steve Jobs rolling over in his grave.Personally, I've had no issues with the Apple Podcasts Connect dashboard - under either of the two accounts I use it with.  But I think I'm one of the lucky ones - every podcast newsletter I get is littered with horror stories of folks who can't get in, can't add new shows, or can't get new episodes to show up.  Also, according to PodNews, Apple Podcasts is no longer taking your info straight from your RSS feed.  Instead, they are crawling your show, the way Google does with a website.  But while other podcast apps check every few minutes, it appears Apple only crawls every two hours or so, which has resulted in a delay of new episodes showing up, even for subscribers.  Just to be safe, I recorded this on Wednesday and set it for a Thursday midnight release, so hopefully you have it by the time you wake up on Thursday. Here's the explainer from PodNews: https://podnews.net/article/apple-podcasts-new-episodeSpeaking OF show notes, you may not see them this week - particularly if you're listening in the new Apple Podcasts.  Those aren't showing up correctly either.  You will see them, however, if you're listening in Spotify, Google Podcasts, or if you're watching or listening at  JAGinDetroit.com.  Frustrating. As I mentioned last week, Apple was first in to the podcasting space, and they got fat and lazy as a result.  As the space blew up over the past year they though, "We'd better make some changes."  Looks like the bugs weren't worked out before the big launch, and now, sadly, it's messing with people's livelihoods.  Do better, Apple.  Do better. With all the news last week about paid subscription models from Apple and Spotify, no news from Google.  They seem to be taking the opposite approach.  They are moving at a glacial pace, but seem to try to get it right before releasing anything new.A new "um removal" service is online - Cleanvoice claims to use AI to remove "ums" and "uhs" from your audio.  The website is Cleanvoice dot AI, if you wanna give it a try.  It's been my experience that AI isn't as smooth an editor as a real human being, but I'd be curious how it works if you try it.  Again, CleanVoice (all one word) dot AI. As far as the real human editors, some news around popular free audio editing software Audacity this week.  A company called Muse Group claims to have bought Audacity.  Now the program is free and open source, so it's not clear what the Muse Group actually owns besides the trademark, according to PodNews.  But it could mean better support for the app?  Stay tuned.  Again, that's the AUDACITY app, not to be confused with AUDACY, the new name of the second biggest radio station owner in the US, who thought Audacy would be a better app name and website than...oh i dunno....RADIO DOT COM.While corporate radio continues to corporate radio...Podcasting is  continuing to grow in all areas:  Nielsen, the company that does ratings for TV, radio, and lots of web stuff, has launched a Podcast Ad Effectiveness tool to measure the success of ads: https://www.nielsen.com/us/en/press-releases/2021/nielsen-launches-podcast-ad-effectiveness-to-measure-digitally-inserted-podcast-ads-in-real-time/And on the content side:  A podcast is coming from Chelsea Handler (an advice column). Pop duo The Chainsmokers are launching a singing competition via podcast on Audible in the near future.  And the Tribeca Film Festival in New York will include podcasts this year. Finally, I'm planning on attending Podcast Movement in person this August in Nashville.  If you're on the fence about going, they've got a cool program where you can buy the Virtual Ticket, then upgrade and pay the difference if you decide you'd go in person this summer.  https://podcastmovement.com/featured/pm21-virtual-attendance-southeast-meetup-tour-and-more/
