Hey, Heal Squad! We are joined by the real life ex-wife of the Wolf of Wall Street, Dr. Nadine Macaluso, and in this quick Heal in 10, she explains how trauma bonds form, why “high-functioning neurotics” often get stuck in toxic relationships, and how adaptive survival strategies from childhood like (people-pleasing or compartmentalizing) can end up keeping us trapped as adults. She also shares the truth about coercive control: it's not always visible, but it works by belittling, micromanaging, threatening, and breaking someone down until they lose their sense of self. And here's the empowering part, Dr. Nadine gives us the tools to start unwinding these patterns, from learning to say “no” to finally trusting that gut feeling we so often ignore. PLUS, we get into the science behind intuition, including the vagus nerve and how your body actually warns you of danger before your mind catches up. If you've ever felt “crazy” in a relationship or questioned your own instincts, this episode will remind you: your body knows the truth… tune in! -- HEAL SQUAD SOCIALS IG: https://www.instagram.com/healsquad/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@healsquadxmaria HEAL SQUAD RESOURCES: Heal Squad Website:https://www.healsquad.com/ Heal Squad x Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/HealSquad/membership Maria Menounos Website: https://www.mariamenounos.com My Curated Macy's Page: Shop My Macy's Storefront Prenuvo: Prenuvo.com/MARIA for $300 off EMR-Tek Red Light: https://emr-tek.com/discount/Maria30 for 30% off Airbnb: https://www.airbnb.com/ Briotech: https://shopbriotech.com/ Use Code: HEALSQUAD for 20% off Join In-Person Heal Retreat Waitlist! https://mariamenounos.myflodesk.com/heal-retreat-waitlist GUEST RESOURCES: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therealdrnadine/?hl=en Website: https://drnae.com/ Download the First Chapter of Dr. Nae's new book: https://heal.drnae.com/giveaway-book-a?utm_campaign=bf&utm_source=podcast&utm_medium=podcast&utm_keyword=book Book mentioned in the episode: https://www.amazon.com/Women-Who-Love-Psychopaths-Relationships/dp/0984172807 ABOUT MARIA MENOUNOS: Emmy Award-winning journalist, TV personality, actress, 2x NYT best-selling author, former pro-wrestler and brain tumor survivor, Maria Menounos' passion is to see others heal and to get better in all areas of life. Hey Heal Squad! We're back with Part 2 of our powerful conversation with Dr. Nadine Macaluso, psychotherapist, trauma expert, and former wife of the “Wolf of Wall Street.” Dr. Nadine breaks down the psychology of trauma bonds, what they are, why they're so hard to escape, and the real steps you need to take to leave safely. She explains how intermittent reinforcement keeps people stuck, why “love bombing” is actually manipulation, and how to spot the red flags of a pathological partner before it's too late. PLUS, we dive into the shame and self-blame survivors carry, how to reframe those beliefs with compassion, and why learning to trust yourself again is the key to healing. Nadine shares inspiring stories of women who not only left toxic love, but went on to build thriving lives and even find healthy love again. This episode will remind you that freedom, clarity, and joy are absolutely within reach. HEALERS & HEAL-LINERS Trauma bonds are designed to keep you stuck. Intermittent reinforcement, love bombing, and devaluation create a cycle that feels like love but is actually control. Love bombing is manipulation. Those over-the-top gifts, sweeping gestures, and declarations of “soulmate love” are tools to hook you fast. Dr. Nadine explains why true love builds slowly, while love bombing is a red flag that signals future coercion and abuse. Shame keeps survivors silent. Releasing self-blame and choosing self-compassion is the first step toward breaking free and healing. The healing shift comes when survivors reframe the story, release self-blame, and embrace compassion for what they endured. -- HEAL SQUAD SOCIALS IG: https://www.instagram.com/healsquad/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@healsquadxmaria HEAL SQUAD RESOURCES: Heal Squad Website:https://www.healsquad.com/ Heal Squad x Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/HealSquad/membership Maria Menounos Website: https://www.mariamenounos.com My Curated Macy's Page: Shop My Macy's Storefront Prenuvo: Prenuvo.com/MARIA for $300 off EMR-Tek Red Light: https://emr-tek.com/discount/Maria30 for 30% off Airbnb: https://www.airbnb.com/ Briotech: https://shopbriotech.com/ Use Code: HEALSQUAD for 20% off Join In-Person Heal Retreat Waitlist! https://mariamenounos.myflodesk.com/heal-retreat-waitlist GUEST RESOURCES: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/therealdrnadine/?hl=en Website: https://drnae.com/ Download the First Chapter of Dr. Nae's new book Book mentioned in the episode: https://www.amazon.com/Women-Who-Love-Psychopaths-Relationships/dp/0984172807 ABOUT MARIA MENOUNOS: Emmy Award-winning journalist, TV personality, actress, 2x NYT best-selling author, former pro-wrestler and brain tumor survivor, Maria Menounos' passion is to see others heal and to get better in all areas of life. Most importantly, she shares a roadmap for healing whether your heartbreak happens privately or with the world watching."Trust your gut and get curious," Dr. Macaluso advises. While approximately 70% of relationships don't survive infidelity, about 30% do—especially when the betraying partner can truly acknowledge the pain they've caused without defensiveness. Drawing from both professional expertise and personal experience, she offers hope to anyone feeling shattered: "Healing is a process and it's not linear. It's one step forward, two steps back, and you're worth it."Ready to understand betrayal trauma and begin your healing journey? This episode provides both compassionate insight and practical tools for rebuilding trust—in others and in yourself. Week 3 of Sean “Diddy” Combs trial and Laura and Lisa Bilyeu dive into the powerful testimony of Capricorn Clark, who described the fear, threats, and intimidation she witnessed and experienced including the threat to Kid Cudi, and Diddy's calculated use of staff to control and retrieve Cassie. Laura explains the DASH Risk Assessment Model and how it is used to decode coercive control, stalking behaviors and credible threats to harm and/or kill. Dr. Nadine Macaluso unpacks the psychological aftermath of coercive control and the devastating impact of trauma bonds. Laura debunks Stockholm Syndrome, how women's trauma and survival responses are different to men's as well as what happens when violence is normalized and abuse becomes routine. Laura and Dr. Nadine bring clarity to how abuser's use shame, fear, and manipulation to entrap victims. They analyze the courtroom testimony from Deonte Nash and “Mia,” as well as one of the most common things abuser's say after a violent attack and how grooming and boundary erosion sets the stage for physical and sexual abuse. Finally, Laura and Lisa address the defense's request for a mistrial and the implications of that move, while sharing resources to better understand coercive control and risk. This episode is a vital listen. The courtroom isn't just a stage for justice - it's a lens into systemic patterns of abuse, gaslighting denial, and accountability. Listen now and share this episode with someone who needs to hear it and gain critical insights that empower you to spot the red flags and demand true accountability in a system that too often fails survivors. This week on From Mrs. to Ms., we're joined by the remarkable Dr. Nadine Macaluso, aka Dr. Nae—a licensed marriage and family therapist, trauma expert, and author of Run Like Hell: A Therapist's Guide to Recognizing, Escaping, and Healing from Trauma Bonds. As a 22-year-old, Nadine was swept up in a fairy tale romance with Jordan Belfort, the infamous "Wolf of Wall Street," played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the hit movie. Their eight-year marriage started with extravagant gifts, romantic dinners, and lavish parties, but soon turned into a nightmare filled with infidelity, narcissistic abuse, and uncontrollable addiction. Nadine, like so many others in toxic relationships, remained trauma-bonded—believing her love could save him—until the pain became unbearable. At 30, Nadine made the courageous decision to leave Jordan, pack up her children, and start over in Los Angeles. Through intensive therapy and deep self-reflection, she not only healed but discovered her passion for helping others break free from similar cycles of abuse. By 39, she returned to school and later earned her PhD in Counseling and Somatic Psychology, becoming an industry expert in narcissistic abuse, trauma bonds, and complex PTSD. In this powerful conversation, Dr. Nae shares her personal journey from a trauma-bonded marriage to finding healing, purpose, and ultimately, love again. She breaks down what trauma bonds are, why they're so hard to escape, and the steps you can take to reclaim your authentic self. Whether you're navigating a difficult relationship or simply curious about the psychology of toxic dynamics, this episode is filled with valuable insights and hope. Don't miss this heartfelt discussion with a woman who turned her pain into power and is now helping countless others do the same. Episode Summary: In this eye-opening episode, Dr. Nadine Macaluso, renowned therapist and trauma expert, shares her journey of overcoming a toxic relationship with "The Wolf of Wall Street" and explains the dynamics of trauma bonds. Together, we explore how these relationships form, why they're so difficult to leave, and actionable steps for breaking free and rebuilding your life. Dr. Nae offers profound insights, practical strategies, and hope for anyone trapped in a trauma bond. Key Topics Covered: 1. Dr. Nadine's Personal Journey Married to the infamous “Wolf of Wall Street,” Jordan Belfort, and the realities behind the glamour depicted in the movie. Her experience with love bombing, coercion, abuse, and the eventual breaking point that led her to leave. How her journey inspired her to become a therapist specializing in trauma and toxic relationships. 2. What Is a Trauma Bond? A toxic, dysfunctional relationship characterized by power imbalance and cycles of intermittent reinforcement (e.g., love bombing followed by abuse). Key conditions: One partner seeks control while the other becomes emotionally attached despite the harm. The confusing mix of highs and lows that keeps people trapped in these relationships. 3. Recognizing a Trauma Bond Signs of a trauma bond: self-sacrifice, self-abandonment, and rationalizing abusive behavior. The importance of radical acceptance and recognizing the reality of the relationship. Dispelling the myth that the victim is at fault for the abuse. 4. Breaking Free from a Trauma Bond The importance of having a plan before leaving: gather financial, legal, and personal resources. Learning to “wear the mask” and act normal while preparing your exit. Why reaching out for support and building resilience in a safe community is critical. 5. Rebuilding Your Life After Leaving Turning the focus inward: rediscovering who you are, addressing developmental trauma, and strengthening your self-worth. The role of self-care, therapy, and community in stabilizing after a trauma bond. Embracing the healing journey as an opportunity to create a life you love. 6. Dr. Nae's Advice for Healing Abuse is never the victim's fault, and healing is possible for everyone. The importance of recognizing the impulse to heal and following it step by step. Building new neural pathways to replace patterns of shame and self-blame with empowerment. Key Takeaways: Trauma bonds are rooted in control and manipulation, not love. Recognizing the reality of the relationship is the first step to breaking free. Healing requires a plan, support, and the willingness to prioritize your self-care and growth. The power to rebuild your life lies within you, and a brighter, healthier future is possible. Was I In A Cult? is not your typical cult podcast. Hosted by writer/comedian Liz Lacuzzi and documentary filmmaker Tyler Measom, the duo bring you first-hand stories from real cult survivors— each episode infuses humor, heart, and hope into tales that can otherwise be dark. And the guests have not only survived, but transformed their darkest moments into stories of strength. As cult survivors themselves, Liz and Tyler aim to humanize the cult experience. Give it a listen… it may just leave you asking yourself “Wait… was I in a cult?!” -- Dr. Nadine Macaluso joins us today to discuss our first of its kind on this show… a cult of one. Who exactly was her cult leader? None other than “The Wolf of Wall Street,” her ex-husband, Jordan Belfort. In the movie adaptation of Jordan's book, “The Wolf of Wall Street,” Dr. Nadine was portrayed by Margot Robbie and had no say in how her life was portrayed. Well, today Dr. Nadine is here to share the truth behind her picture perfect life. On the outside she had beauty, wealth, the doting husband, and two wonderful kids. But today she shares the truth about what was going on behind closed doors: the isolation, the loss of self, the abuse, the control, the manipulation and the gaslighting that kept her in a haze of confusion and pain. But, like every guest on this show, she shares the moment she finally found the strength and courage to walk away for good. Now a respected therapist, Dr. Nae emphasizes the importance of therapy in her healing process and destigmatizing the experiences of victims of cult leaders or pathological lovers. A Brooklyn gal at heart, Dr. Nae is as real as they get and was an absolute joy to have on the show. *** Listen to Was I In A Cult?: https://www.wasiinacult.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. We never expect—much less want—to find ourselves caught up in abusive relationships or toxic dynamics such as trauma bonding or gaslighting. In fact, traumatic bonding, which involves abusive power and control coupled with cycles of intermittent reward and punishment, can create or worsen serious mental health issues including anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. Sadly, many of those affected—largely women—become stuck in abusive relationships due to low self-worth, shame, and deep fears of stigmatization. Today, we're joined by trauma expert and former wife of The Wolf of Wall Street, Dr. Nadine Macaluso, who will be sharing her vast expertise on destructive relationships, narcissistic abuse, coercive control, and other emotionally manipulative behaviors. As Dr. Nadine notes, "In abusive relationships, we often forfeit the self for the sake of the relationship identity." Listener discretion is advised as this episode contains sensitive information related to trauma, abusive relationships, and abusive dynamics. As a 22-year-old, Nadine never could have understood what she was committing to when marrying Jordan Belfort, the fraudulent stockbroker infamously known as the Wolf of Wall Street.Their eight-year marriage began as a fairytale, filled with romantic dinners, expensive gifts, and lavish parties. But once they were bonded, Jordan's ‘mask' began to slip and acts of infidelity, narcissistic abuse, insatiable greed, and uncontrollable drug addiction became Nadine's living nightmare. Nadine naively believed that their connection was real, and that her love could save him, so she remained trauma-bonded until the pain of their relationship became too much to bear. It would be decades before she realized her story resembled thousands of other women's relational experiences.https://drnae.com/about-dr-nadine-macaluso/ To View This Episode- https://youtu.be/3zC6b7Qyw-4 #WolfOfWallStreet #RunLikeHell #Podcast #WhoKnewInTheMoment?

Famously played by Margot Robbie in The Wolf of Wall Street, Nadine recalls being love bombed by ex husband Jordan Belfort, their tumultuous relationship, and how it all led to her work as a therapist specializing in dealing with narcissistic partners. She shares red flags and some basic tools for navigating abusive relationships. And of course, you know we had to cover and factcheck some of the iconic scenes from the movie. This is a juicy one.
