Coches Mild-Hybrid - Hibridos Ligeros: ¿Un timo o funcionan?

Welcome to EXECUTIVE PRODUCER BRIAN OLEARY HYUNDAI IONIQ 6 ELECTRIC SEDAN SPIED TESTING IN GERMANY "Hyundai reportedly took the Ioniq 6 back to the drawing board for some last minute design changes. We therefore don't know if the final production interpretation of the model will look like this prototype or if it will even more closely resemble the stunning Prophecy concept that previewed it." asks InsideEVs: "while previous prototypes were spotted with cameras instead of regular side mirrors, these newer prototypes featured the latter. Hyundai is building the Ioniq 6 on it E-GMP dedicated electric vehicle platform and thus it will surely share many components with the Ioniq 5. However, the largest available battery will be bigger than the Ioniq 5's 72.6 kWh pack and it could be closer to 100 kWh (with around 300 miles of range), according to some rumors." VOLKSWAGEN REVEALS PHEV PLANS WITH >100 KM RANGE ""In the course of a presentation of its current plug-in hybrid models, Volkswagen has given an outlook on its upcoming PHEV strategy. A new generation of plug-in hybrid drives is expected to be used from 2023." says electrive :"the battery capacity and thus the electric range are to increase significantly – the latter to around 100 kilometres.  Volkswagen's PHEVs will in future have a fast-charging option with a CCS connection, enabling significantly faster charging processes than with the existing single-phase onboard chargers with only 3.6 kW charging power. Media reports indicate that the AC onboard charger could also be upgraded. From the 3.6 kW single-phase mentioned at the beginning to 11 kW three-phase" Read more: https://www.electrive.com/2021/09/29/volkswagen-reveals-phev-plans-with-100-km-range/ VW WASTES NO TIME JOSTLING FOR GERMANY'S NEW POLITICAL PARADIGM "On Monday morning, the man who prevailed in Germany's race to succeed Angela Merkel as chancellor called on potential partners to join him in a new government as soon as possible. Olaf Scholz, of the center-left Social Democrats, appealed to the environmentally minded Greens and pro-business Free Democrats to back a three-way coalition following his narrow victory in Sunday's election." reports Bloomberg: "Just a few hours later, Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess took to Twitter to sketch out the car giant's vision for a new government. His 10-point wish list includes calls to expand renewables, curb coal, raise the price of CO2 and scrap subsidies for gasoline and diesel fuel. VW's CEO openly trying to speed up the demise of the internal combustion engine would have been unthinkable only a few years ago. the SPD has repeatedly called on the industry to be more ambitious when it comes to phasing out the combustion engine. The party was instrumental in denying the industry's request for a scrapping bonus for older gasoline and diesel vehicles at the height of the pandemic last year." POWER CUTS MAY STIFLE CHINESE DEMAND FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES "China's power cuts could put a dent in the booming electric vehicle (EV) sector as the suspension of charging stations in parts of the country keeps some battery-powered cars off the roads, analysts said." according to South China Morning Post: "The power blackouts in more than 10 provinces across the mainland are likely to further sap drivers' appetite for EVs in regions where their take-up is already low. “In northeast China, electric cars have been greeted with a lukewarm response for many years,” said Zhang Fan, a car insurance broker in Jilin province. “The power cuts could further siphon off buying interest in electricity-powered vehicles.”" https://www.scmp.com/business/china-business/article/3151085/chinas-switch-financing-overseas-renewable-energy-projects CHINA'S CARMAKERS ARE MAKING CHEAPER ELECTRIC VEHICLES "As the world enters the era of the electric vehicle (EV), are we about to see a sea change in the identity and makeup of Europe's streets?  The quality, and, more importantly, the affordability of Chinese EVs is becoming a situation that is harder for European manufacturers to ignore with each passing year, and it could be just a matter of time before the market becomes flooded with imports from China." says Euronews.com: "According to a report from automotive data analysis firm Jato Dynamics, the average price of a new electric car in China since 2011 has fallen from €41,800 to €22,100. While China's significant manufacturing capabilities have never been in doubt, the question was whether it would be able to innovate to the same degree as its Western counterparts. That question has been answered in the form of their batteries and the technology they are able to implement inside their vehicles (although parts of the industry are still subsidised by the Chinese government)." Hello again! It’s Easter. A time of rebirth and renewal. A time to dig out those old sound clips that you previously considered unworthy of broadcast and to attempt to give them new life. In this re-edited version of our bumper episode on car culture, Nick and Gavin once again discuss cars, magazines, films and advertisements that evoke the spirit of driving and car ownership. In this version, we ask: - Why can’t either of us say ‘patented’? - Who is more drunk (in the studio, not in the car) – Nick or Gavin? - Will Gavin get shot down for the manner in which he attempts to praise Bertha Benz? (Answer: almost certainly) - Did we ‘enjoy MG’ a little too much? - Which is the worst car advert (indeed, the worst ad) ever? (Nick says, ‘Seat – Because them…us’) - What’s that buzzing noise? (Answer: Nick’s laptop fan) - Are John and Ian with us, and will we get the backing? - Would you want your car delivered by Kowalski and have you gathered that he drives very fast? - Is ‘Weekend’ about the hell of consumer culture or the sexiness of sitting on eggs? - Is greed good, and will all have our own trains in the future? - Is Nick’s new car more boring than a Honda Jazz? At least it’s not a Nissan Note….

Eventually millions of Ford and Lincoln vehicles will be powered by the Android Automotive OS, which means that popular Google apps and services such as Maps and Google Assistant will be built-in to the vehicle's infotainment system without having to sync a cellphone. " according to FutureCar: "The Android OS supports OTA updates, so Ford customers will always have the latest software installed in their vehicles. Ford vehicles will also feature Google Maps as the primary navigation provider. Google Maps is one of the company's most used apps and includes voice-guided turn-by-turn directions, real-time traffic information, automatic rerouting, lane guidance and more.  The open-source Android ecosystem also allows Ford and third-party developers to build their own apps that provide a more-personalized ownership experience for Ford customers."   We've seen this in Polestar 2 and Volvo XC40.   https://www.axios.com/ford-google-android-vehicles-6bb6d356-9343-4e77-9ccb-ca9e67373e15.html   https://www.futurecar.com/4395/Ford-&-Google-Plan-to-Reinvent-the-Connected-Vehicle-Experience-with-New-Android-OS-Partnership   VW CEO TELLS MANAGERS TO PREPARE FOR ‘SIGNIFICANT’ MARKET UPTURN "Volkswagen AG Chief Executive Officer Herbert Diess provided an upbeat outlook for the back half of this year even as Covid-19 and a global shortage of semiconductors is poised to hit first-quarter results." reports Bloomberg: "Europe’s largest automaker lost the top spot in global sales to Toyota Motor Corp. last year, but it sold more electric cars than Tesla Inc. in Europe and is escalating the world’s biggest push into purely battery-powered vehicles. VW will roll out the ID.4 crossover under its namesake brand in 2021 and add more versions of the Audi e-tron and Porsche Taycan models. The two luxury brands generate the biggest chunk of profits for the German industrial giant. VW expects to sell roughly 600,000 purely battery-powered cars this year"   And they're all profitable.   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-02-01/vw-ceo-tells-mangers-to-prepare-for-significant-market-upturn   GASOLINE IS BECOMING WORTHLESS "You still have to pay a couple bucks for a gallon of gas (more in California, as always), but automakers are discovering that gas-powered cars may be a liability that detracts from their valuations, instead of an asset that enhances values." according to Yahoo Finance: "New research from Morgan Stanley argues that traditional internal combustion engines—the mainstay of automobiles for more than a century—are destined to become money-losers as early as 2030. he Morgan Stanley analysis suggests market forces may now drive a move from carbon-fueled vehicles to electric ones, at least as much as government policy. The investing firm recently surveyed institutional investors on the value of internal-combustion technology at GM and Ford. Seventeen percent said ICE technology had no value or negative value today. Sixty percent rated ICE technology as slightly positive. But essentially all of the growth in powertrain adoption in coming years will be electric, while ICE powertrains are certain to decline. With investors viewing internal-combustion powertrains as a dying technology, there’s likely to be little new investment, with research dollars flowing instead to the electrification efforts investors value. That will speed innovation and lower costs."   https://finance.yahoo.com/news/gasoline-is-becoming-worthless-210636353.html   TESLA RECALLS 135,000 CARS AFTER PUSHING BACK AGAINST REGULATORS "Tesla (TSLA) is recalling 135,000 Tesla Model S sedans and Model X SUVs because their large center touchscreens can fail. Tesla had previously objected to a push to issue a recall from regulators, as it claimed that the problem wasn't a safety issue." according to CNN: "The recall applies to some 2012 through 2018 Model S and 2016 through 2018 Model X vehicles. Under the recall, which will begin on March 30, Tesla must notify owners of cars with the failure-prone touchscreens and replace a computer chip that controls the screen. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) considers this a safety issue because without a functioning center screen, drivers lose the display for the car's backup camera and controls for the window defroster and defogger., Tesla said in its letter to NHTSA that it will make the recall repairs for free and will offer a discount on upgraded screen hardware."   From NHTSA: ""We note that your report states that Tesla believes that this matter does not have a safety risk," read the letter, signed by Alex Ansley, chief of NHTSA's Recall Management Division. "In our view, this statement has no force or effect in terms of Tesla's obligation to undertake and complete the recall, and NHTSA does not agree with it.""   https://edition.cnn.com/2021/02/02/business/tesla-screen-recall/index.html   FIRST LOOK AT TESLA MODEL S AND X FRONT ‘MEGACASTING’ "A recently leaked image from the Fremont Factory has provided what could very well be the first look at the Tesla Model S and Model X refresh’s front “megacastings.” Provided that the leaked images are accurate, it would appear that Tesla’s updated flagship vehicles would feature some of the company’s most advanced casting technologies. " reports TEslarati: "Model S and Model X refresh features two castings in the front underbody and two in the rear underbody. This means that the flagship vehicles’ front underbody is now tied together by the dash and central underbody. The rear underbody, on the other hand, now features two castings linked together by stamped and welded aluminum. With such a system in place, there could be one megacast for each of the flagship vehicles’ wheels."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-model-x-refresh-megacast-first-look-photos/   LYNK & CO ZERO EV INTERIOR TEASER "Geely's Lynk & Co has just released a new teaser of the interior of its upcoming high performances and long-range all-electric model - Lynk & Co Zero. We must admit that it looks cool. There is a dashboard display that reminds us of the one in Ford Mustang Mach-E, and a 15.4" central touchscreen that, on the other hand, reminds us of the one in Teslas." says InsideEVS: "The Zero EV is expected on the Chinese market in the fourth quarter of this year, as the first model based on the Sustainable Electric Architecture (SEA). The specs will be really strong, including:0-100 km/h (62 mph) in less than 4 seconds. long-range of more than 700 km (435 miles) - under the NEDC test cycle"   https://insideevs.com/news/484189/lynk-co-zero-interior-teaser/   PUSH TO GO ELECTRIC COULD WIPE OUT JAPAN’S CHEAP MICROCARS "Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga pledged last year to decarbonize Japan by 2050, with plans to ban the sale of new gasoline-only vehicles by the mid-2030s. That’s created a dilemma for Honda Motor Co., Nissan Motor Co. and other makers of compact cars, with the added cost of technology making them less affordable for buyers." says Bloomberg: " Prices for electric-vehicle battery packs fell 15% from 2019 to 2020, whereas plug-in hybrid packs only fell 5%, according to BloombergNEF. Hybrid pack prices didn’t change significantly. The worst scenario for Japanese kei makers is that affordable electric cars from China will enter the market and lure kei customers, Miyao said. SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Co.’s four-seater hatchback Mini EV has become a best-seller in China and is one of the cheapest on the market, costing less than $5,000."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-01-31/push-to-go-electric-could-wipe-out-japan-s-cheap-microcars   NISSAN NOTE E-POWER ORDERS MORE THAN DOUBLE THE MONTHLY TARGET "Orders for the all-new Nissan Note e-POWER have surpassed 20,000—more than double the compact car’s monthly sales target—since it was released in Japan in late December. (Earlier post.) Equipped with Nissan’s e-POWER electrified powertrain, the fully refreshed Note went on sale on 23 December with a monthly sales target of 8,000 vehicles. As of 1 February, Nissan has received orders for 20,044." says Green Car Congress: "e-POWER comprises a high-output battery and the powertrain which is integrated with gasoline engine, power generator, inverter and a motor. In conventional hybrid systems, the wheels are driven by an electric motor and a gasoline engine. However, in the e-POWER system, the gasoline engine is not connected to the wheels; it simply charges the battery. And unlike a full EV, the power source is the engine, rather than just the battery."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2021/02/20210202-epower.html   NORWAY’S BEST EVER JANUARY AT 81% PLUGIN ELECTRIC VEHICLE SHARE "Norway, the world’s leading nation in the electric vehicle transition, saw 80.7% plugin share in January, significant growth from the 64.4% of a year ago. The overall auto market was up 7.7% in volume year-on-year, with the country’s bestsellers being the Audi e-tron and Peugeot e-2008." says Dr Max Holland for Clean Technica: "January’s combined plugin result of 80.66% comprised just over 53.0% full battery electrics (BEVs) and just over 27.6% plugin hybrids (PHEVs), a slight swing toward PHEVs from full year 2020’s contributions."   "Strong volume by the Peugeot e-2008, the Volvo XC40 and Polestar 2 saw them join the Mercedes-Benz EQC and Nissan LEAF in the top 6 positions in January"   https://cleantechnica.com/2021/02/02/norways-best-ever-january-at-81-plugin-electric-share/     NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK Have you seen the social media meme of putting two photo’s side by side and titling them ‘how to started’ and ‘how it’s going’. Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 7th March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Formula E on terrestrial free TV this weekend, Hong Kong race to be screened live by BBC2.   CARLOS GHOSN RELEASED ON BAIL "An an unusual move in Japan, former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn was released on bail Wednesday after 108 days in jail, according to a report in Automotive News." Says Green Car Reports: "Ghosn, who is known as the father of the Nissan Leaf for his work championing the car's production, was arrested in November on charges of allegedly misusing company funds and underreporting his compensation for 10 years. In Japan, criminal suspects are routinely held without bail, and prosecutors can file new charges against jailed suspects to extend their detention, as they had with Ghosn."   “I am innocent and totally committed to vigorously defending myself in a fair trial against these meritless and unsubstantiated accusations,” he said in a statement following his release.   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1121916_japanese-judge-releases-former-nissan-chairman-ghosn-on-bail     SUPERCHARGER V3 CHARGES AT 1000 MILES PER HOUR V3 is a completely new architecture for Supercharging. A new 1MW power cabinet with a similar design to our utility-scale products supports peak rates of up to 250kW per car. At this rate, a Model 3 Long Range operating at peak efficiency can recover up to 75 miles of charge in 5 minutes and charge at rates of up to 1,000 miles per hour. Combined with other improvements we’re announcing today, V3 Supercharging will ultimately cut the amount of time customers spend charging by an average of 50%, as modeled on our fleet data.Supercharger stations with V3’s new power electronics are designed to enable any owner to charge at the full power their battery can take – no more splitting power with a vehicle in the stall next to you. With these significant technical improvements, we anticipate the typical charging time at a V3 Supercharger will drop to around 15 minutes.   On-Route Battery Warmup New Supercharging infrastructure isn’t the only way we are improving our customers’ charging experience. Beginning this week, Tesla is rolling out a new feature called On-Route Battery Warmup. Now, whenever you navigate to a Supercharger station, your vehicle will intelligently heat the battery to ensure you arrive at the optimal temperature to charge, reducing average charge times for owners by 25%.   This combination of higher peak power with V3, dedicated vehicle power allocation across Supercharger sites, and On-Route Battery Warmup enables customers to charge in half the time and Tesla to serve more than twice the number of customers per hour. Additionally, we are also unlocking 145kW charge rates for our 12,000+ V2 Superchargers over the coming weeks. By increasing the number of vehicles we’re able to charge at each Supercharger in a day, the investment we’re making in our network will go significantly further with every V3 station deployed. Paired with other savings, these efficiencies will translate to an increased pace of investment for Superchargers moving forward, with a continued focus on getting to 100% ownership coverage across all regions we operate.   We will increase Model S and X charging speeds via software updates in the coming months. V3 Supercharging will roll out to the wider fleet in an over the air firmware update to all owners in Q2 as more V3 Superchargers come online. Our first non-beta V3 Supercharger site will break ground next month, with North American sites ramping in Q2 and Q3 before coming to Europe and Asia-Pacific in Q4.   So we need to see all of this in the context of the Model Y, the Semi Truck and the Roadster.     PORSCHE TAYCAN DEBUT AND LAUNCH INFORMATION UNVEILED? “We may finally have some much-anticipated information about the Porsche Taycan reveal and deliveries.” “Porsche’s first all-electric car is coming, and many people are extremely excited about its potential. So much so, that orders are already sold out for at least the first year. Reports say that Porsche plans to build about 40,000 cars initially, however, it seems they’re all spoken for at this point. Hybrid Cars were apprised of some information on the Taycan EV Forum. The site came across a tweet from a user whose Porsche rep leaked some new details about the upcoming performance EV’s timeline.”   “It claims that the Taycan will be unveiled this coming September, with deliveries starting in January 2020. As Hybrid Cars points out, the Frankfurt Motor Show is in September, so this might be the case.”   Per my Porsche rep, Porsche has closed down its Deposit program for the US due to high demand, Sep 2019 unveil confirmed, 1mo prior to unveil build out for orders to open up, Jan 2020 deliveries   Dennis C. (@ClarkDennisM)   https://insideevs.com/porsche-taycan-debut-launch-information/amp/     KIA BRINGS E-SOUL TO EUROPE, UPGRADES NIRO HYBRID AND PHEV Kia used the Geneva International Motor Show as the platform to introduce the battery-electric e-Soul to Europe, as well as to reveal new upgrades to the Niro Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid. Every Kia vehicle on show in Geneva employs the brand’s mild-hybrid, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electric vehicle technology. The e-Soul makes its European debut with a choice of two electric powertrains. Now in its third generation, the Kia e-Soul’s new-generation battery packs—either 64 kWh or 39.2 kWh in capacity—are up to 30% more energy efficient than Europe’s current best-selling electric vehicle. The car is offered in Europe without the option of an internal combustion engine. The new e-Soul goes on-sale in select European markets from the end of the first quarter of 2019, sold as standard with Kia’s 7-year, 150,000-kilometer warranty, which also covers the car’s electric motor and battery pack.   ALL-NEW PEUGEOT E-208 LOOKS DYNAMIC IN GENEVA "The all-new Peugeot 208 with the all-electric e-208 version shown in Geneva in GT trim, raised a lot of interest. The new French subcompact brings to the table completely new dynamic styling." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "In the current specification – especially with the 50 kWh battery,  WLTP range of 340 km (211 miles) and 100 kW electric motor – it could be the tamer of the Renault ZOE, but there is one doubt. In several months, ZOE will get major upgrade in the form of a second generation version, which should make both cars at least competitive. Orders will be accepted from late summer 2019 on, while the launch is expected in the fall of 2019."   https://insideevs.com/peugeot-e-208-debut-geneva-photos-videos/amp/   CURRENT BMW I3 TO GET REVAMP RATHER THAN ALL-NEW MODEL “The BMW i3 is entering its seventh year of production, but the electric car will continue to be produced with further updates planned. The BMW i3 will last beyond the usual seven-year model cycle and get further updates, according to the boss of BMW i Division." Reports John McIlroy for AutoExpress: "The electric city car recently received its second battery upgrade, taking the capacity to 120Ah (42.2kWh) and the real-world range to around 160 miles. However, speaking to Auto Express at the recent Geneva Motor Show, i Division chief Robert Irlinger said the latest battery tweaks would not be the last upgrades in the i3’s life - and stressed that the car is not bound by conventional life cycles."   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/bmw/i3/106240/current-bmw-i3-to-get-revamp-rather-than-all-new-model   NISSAN TO INTRODUCE E-POWER MODELS IN EUROPE Nissan unveiled the IMQ concept crossover, equipped with its award-winning e-POWER system, and announced it will launch the electrified powertrain technology in Europe. The technology will debut in European markets by 2022, Roel de Vries, Nissan corporate vice president, said at the Geneva International Motor Show. e-POWER has been a hit with consumers in Japan, where it’s helped make the Nissan Note the country’s best-selling registered car. Combining 100% electric motor drive with a gasoline engine that charges the battery, e-POWER cars give customers instant, smooth acceleration and excellent fuel efficiency. Introducing the technology in Europe will reinforce Nissan’s leadership in electrified vehicles in the region, where the Nissan LEAF is already the best-selling electric car. Building on the success of LEAF, e-POWER will be among a suite of new technologies coming to Nissan’s best-selling vehicles in Europe in the coming three years. By 2022 sales of electrified Nissan vehicles will increase five-fold, and by the end of that year will be double the market average.       COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 4th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   Before we start The Fourth Of July. In the USA I hope you’re enjoying some well-deserved time off, an Independence Day holiday with family, friends and fireworks. Can I just say on behalf of everyone over here 242 years ago, sorry about all that, we had a habit of taking things. And by things I mean countries.   TESLA IS OFFICIALLY BRINGING MODEL 3 IN EUROPE FOR FIRST TIME AT THE GOODWOOD FESTIVAL OF SPEED Fred at Electrek has AWESOME news for my UK listeners: "Tesla Model 3 has shown up in Europe in several unofficial events, but Tesla is now officially bringing the new electric car on the old continent for the first time this month." Early M3 are also being invited too join them. I'll see you there!   https://electrek.co/2018/07/03/tesla-model-3-official-europe-goodwood-festival-of-speed/     A SHOUTING ELON MUSK AND CHANGING RULES: INSIDE TELSA'S MODEL 3 SPRINT The reaction to Tesla's 5k model 3 achievement are coming in and CNBC goes for full drama: "A tense and short-tempered Chief Executive Elon Musk barked at engineers on the Fremont, California assembly line. Tesla pulled workers from other departments to keep pumping out the Model 3 electric sedans, disrupting production of the Model S and X lines. And weekend shifts were mandatory." They have a little more insight into those last few hours: "Leading up to Sunday morning's production milestone, Musk paced the Model 3 line, snapping at his engineers when the around-the-clock production slowed or stopped due to problems with robots, one worker said. Tesla built a new line in just two weeks in a huge tent outside the main factory, an unprecedented move in an industry that takes years to plan out its assembly lines, and said the tented production area accounted for 20 percent of the Model 3s produced last week." Tesla have made just shy of 50,000 Model S and X's in the first 6 months of a year they planned to produce 100,000. So all things being equal, no more no less, they'll do that too. "In the morning of Sunday, July 1, about five hours after the self-imposed second-quarter deadline had passed, the number 5,000 flashed on a countdown screen viewed by Tesla's Model 3 assembly-line workers. The Model 3 itself bore a "5,000" sign in its front window."   https://www.cnbc.com/2018/07/03/shouting-elon-musk-changing-rules-inside-teslas-model-3-building-spr.html   HYUNDAI CONFIRMS HYBRID AND PHEV FOR NEW SANTA FE The Hyundai Santa Fe looks like it's electrifying for the next model. "Likely to arrive in 2020, the company confirmed their flagship SUV will receive a full array of hybrid powertrains, ranging from 48V mild hybrid, to hybrid and plug-in hybrid." says Jonathan Musk for fleetworld.co.uk: "Although there is little detail to go on for the hybrid and plug-in hybrid Santa Fe models, the mild hybrid variant will be the first to market, joining a powerful 48V system to a 2.0-litre diesel that can add torque to the engine thus improving efficiency."   https://fleetworld.co.uk/hyundai-confirms-hybrid-and-phev-for-new-santa-fe/   NISSAN'S E-POWER TECHNOLOGY IS ANNIHILATING THE TOYOTA PRIUS IN JAPAN There's a hybrid technology not so populate in USA and Europe but doing big business in Japan. There's an ICE but it's there as a generator and the battery always drives the wheels, but on the downside there's no plug socket, so you rely on gas to charge the battery. Is that an EV as fossils are the only fuel? Nissan call it an electrified vehicle because it's the same experience as an EV but with a much smaller 1.8kWh, and therefore lighter, plus cheaper battery. It's in the Nissan Note and soon the Serena family van. It can do just 1.7 miles before the battery expires. Seeking Alpha says: "Given its hybrid nature, environmental consciousness may somewhat hinder adoption of the e-Power technology in Europe and China but it's unclear how European and Chinese governments will react to Nissan's technology. we are taking for granted that California's ZEV Mandate provides a loophole for e-Power technology just as it does in the case of the range-extended version of the BMW i3." The note is already Japan's best-selling car with more buyers wanting e-power it's soon to dethrone the mighty Toyota Prius. Would you buy one? You'd still have to fill it up all the time. You do get more miles as it's technically more efficient to run the ICE as generator. Is this technology which is going to be outdated by the time battery prices drop?   https://seekingalpha.com/article/4185100-nissans-e-power-technology-annihilating-toyota-prius-japan-can-also-threat-tesla-lithium   VW ENDS GERMAN DIESEL FLEET RENEWAL SUBSIDIES "Volkswagen Group let its diesel fleet renewal program in Germany expire at the end of June, a company source said, deciding against extending it for a third time" reports AutoNews.com: "While some of the highest discounts were initially offered on cars equipped with alternative drivetrains such as full-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles, over time VW Group focused its incentive more on replacing old diesels with new ones."   http://europe.autonews.com/article/20180703/ANE/180709926/vw-ends-german-diesel-fleet-renewal-subsidies   TOLL DISCOUNTS OFFER ONE MORE REASON TO GO ELECTRIC In Ireland, "Drivers of electric and plug-in hybrid cars will pay a reduced fee on toll roads across the country from today" says Michael Cogley for The Times: "Those driving full electric vehicles will only pay half the toll rate while those using plug-in hybrids will get a reduction of 25 per cent. Drivers of fully hybrid cars, which rely on petrol or diesel to generate their initial energy, will receive no saving under the scheme."   https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/toll-discounts-offer-one-more-reason-to-go-electric-vwfcc8p2n     AUSTRALIAN FAST-CHARGERS SMASH EV “RANGE ANXIETY” ON AUTOBAHN Yesterday I was bashing Australia a bit for not having more solar and using that to power EV's considering they have all the sunshine. So let me redress that with some praise. Sophie Vorrath at RenewEconomy: "Electric vehicle drivers on Germany’s Autobahn can now recharge their car batteries almost as fast as filling up a petrol tank, using Australian made technology. Brisbane based EV infrastructure company Tritium said on Tuesday it had exported and installed 12 of the most powerful electric car chargers on the market to a site in Germany" The IONITY project is installing 350kW charging goodness.   https://reneweconomy.com.au/australian-fast-chargers-smash-ev-range-anxiety-autobahn-38364/   SWEDENS JULY 1 STEEP VEHICLE TAX HIKE SPARKS LAST MINUTE JUNE CAR SALES FRENZY "Significant increases in annual vehicle taxes, particularly for vehicles with high CO2 emission came into effect July 1 this year. These tax hikes for higher polluting cars in particular were at the root of Junes car sales bonanza" says AID with a view to how it will affect EVs: "Perhaps most significant, the one-off subsidies for low-emission electric (BEV) and plug-in-hybrid cars have changed. In short, starting July 1 this year, buyers of new zero-emission BEVs will get a SEK60,000 (5,800) purchase bonus. The bonus is paid six months after first registrations."   http://www.eagleaid.com/AID-Newsletter-preorder-1813preview-a-Swedens-steep-vehicle-tax-hike-sparks-last-minute-June-car-sales-frenzy.htm   TOURIST TAX TO FUND ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING STATIONS Mallorca is a beautiful island off the coast of Spain which Mrs Lee and I love to visit because of the sunshine and a chance to practice our terrible Spanish. But I never many see EVs. Now it turns out I may be helping pay for them! 500 rapid chargers will be installed using 10 million Euros of funds from tourists. A new policy will halt the sale of new diesel vehicles from 2025 and petrol fuelled cars from 2035 as the island moves to electric.   GRIDSERVE® ANNOUNCE UK-WIDE NETWORK OF ELECTRIC VEHICLE “FORECOURTS OF THE FUTURE” Here in the UK: "GRIDSERVE’s national network of Electric Forecourts™ will offer significantly more high power charging points than are currently available at most UK petrol stations, and a totally new customer-focused charging, retail and services offering". Toddington Harper, chief executive of GRIDSERVE, said: “Our plan is to deliver for electric vehicle charging what Amazon has done for shopping online – make it simple, price competitive, and a great customer experience”. The team is currently exploring relationships with landowners, developers, investors, EV manufacturers, fleet managers and retailers.   WHAT’S DRIVING OIL COMPANIES TO BUY ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING FIRMS? org has more thoughts on the recent purchase of Chargemaster by BP: "News of the Chargemaster acquisition comes less than a year after rival Shell shared plans to acquire NewMotion, a charging station company with more than 30,000 installations across 25 European countries. Other big oil and gas firms exploring alternative energy technologies include ExxonMobil, Chevron, and Saudi Aramco. Saudi Arabia’s largest commissioned solar power plant sits today in a parking lot at Aramco’s headquarters in Dhahran. And last year, it was reported that the national oil company was considering an investment of up to $5 billion in the renewable energy sector."     COMMUNITY New members of the EV gang on YouTube   You can listen to all previous 169 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Hello and welcome to the Friday 15th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   MORE JAGUAR I-PACE REVIEWS Do you remember a week or so ago, the first batch of I-PACE reviews hit the net from the largest video and magazine channels. Now it seems the next wave of website this time have had their time in the car, as it seemed another set of reviews all appeared today.   Starting with Seth writing for Electrek, one of 20 writers at the event: "I noticed that I was one of the only folks with any EV experience. While its 240-mile 400HP AWD electric drivetrain certainly screams SUV, its actual body shape, internal space and ride make it feel more like a sedan. If anything, it feels closest to a Tesla Model 3 inside, especially with its glass roof, but that’s beyond a stretch. Jaguar has beautiful and tasteful buttons, knobs and a small screen while Tesla’s spartan interior UI is simply a large touch screen with two simple knobs on the steering wheel. The official charging rate of the I-PACE is 100kW but I was told that a future OTA software update could push charging to over 110kW, closer to 120kW No one is going to mistake the I-PACE for a Tesla unless they are fresh out of ideas and need some clickbait." I'm sure if you tune into the Electrek podcast there will be a lot of chat about it. Engadget: "One of the most important addition is support for over-the-air updates. While a majority of the features in the I-Pace are cribbed from other Jags and Land Rovers, this one is clearly borrowed from Tesla. Musk's company set a precedent with its OTA updates and it's good to see other automakers following suit. Consumers are used to seeing their other tech devices update without having to visit a service center, there's no reason the biggest computer they own shouldn't do it as well." ArsTechnica: "The Jaguar I-Pace might just be the most significant new car we'll drive this year. Heat management was a key concern, and there are actually three separate cooling systems: one for the cabin, one for the battery, and a third just for the control electronics. The batteries are happiest at between 30C and 40C. Under the European WLTP cycle, the I-Pace has been rated at 400km of range. The more accurate EPA test the US uses hasn't been completed yet, but Jaguar says you should get at least 240 miles from a full charge. As with every other EV we've tested, you can change the I-Pace's regenerative braking setting between high and low. Set to high, you can really drive it with just the accelerator pedal, as it will decelerate with a vigor when you lift your foot (up to 0.4G in fact). Active Sound Design. Set to Calm, the car's speakers will, in addition to playing music or the radio, add some active noise cancellation to increase the serenity of your journey. But you can also go a different route by setting the slider to Dynamic. This augments those normal EV sounds with a bit more oomph as you floor it. I'm hard pressed to describe the sound, which falls somewhere between a turbine and a growl. Sure, it's artificial, but it's also kind of awesome."   https://electrek.co/2018/06/14/jaguar-i-pace-review-the-240-mile-luxury-sport-utility-is-everything/ https://www.engadget.com/2018/06/14/2019-jaguar-ipace-review/ https://arstechnica.com/cars/2018/06/forget-about-that-tesla-the-jaguar-i-pace-is-the-most-compelling-ev-yet/     RENAULT INVEST IN EV PRODUCTION "Renault will invest more than 1 billion euros ($1.2 billion) to increase electric vehicle production capacity in France and add new models, the carmaker said on Thursday" according to Reuters: "The Zoe production line in Flins, west of Paris, will double its maximum output with the battery-powered subcompact’s next upgrade, the company said in a statement, and its northern Douai factory will tool up to build electric cars on a new architecture shared with Japanese affiliate Nissan." Renault Chairman and Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn: "“The acceleration of our investments in France for electric vehicles will increase the competitiveness and attractiveness of our French industrial sites”. The Cleon plant will triple its electric motor production capacity, while Maubeuge in eastern France receives tooling investment for the next Kangoo van including its electric version, Renault said.   http://europe.autonews.com/article/20180614/ANE/180619840/renault-will-invest-1-billion-euros-in-french-ev-production   RENAULT JOINS E-VIA FLEX-E FAST-CHARGING PROJECT Meanwhile, Electrans has more news on Renault as they've: "partnered with a number of European utilities and international car makers to join the E-VIA FLEX-E project, an initiative to expand high-power charging facilities across the continent." "The extra-urban network will comprise high-power stations with a capacity of between 150kW and 350kW, located along motorways and expressways. Alongside Renault and Enel, partners include EDF, Enedis and Verbund, Nissan and Ibil, a Spanish company which specialises in EV charging services." Autonews go on to say: "the E-VIA FLEX-E network will join that of the EVA+ (Electric Vehicles Arteries) project, also co-financed by the European Commission, which will support 180 fast charging points (Fast Recharge Plus) built over three years along Italian extra-urban corridors. The first 40 Fast stations have already been installed along the Rome-Milan route, among others. Italy alone expects to install 7,000 stations across the country by 2020, doubled to 14,000 this by 2022."   NISSAN COULD BRING EPOWER TO EUROPE One of the regional variations around the world is the ePower drivetrain Nissan use in Japan. It first appeared on the small minivan Nissan Note and in both 2017, and in Q1 of this year, it's Japan's best selling vehicle. In fact 70% of all Note's are driven by ePower. And now Nissan is contemplating bringing ePower to the European market. Nissan could just move forward with pure electrics, after all they have the World's most popular EV in the LEAF which have 300,000 on the roads. But all car makers have more than one eye on the impending European CO2 targets which come into force from 2020, and are based on the emissions of the entire fleet of cars you sell. But what is ePower? It's most similar the range extender tech in the BMW i3 which everyone understands but it's subtly different. The car comes with a small gas engine which can work in it's optimal rev range all the time so it's most efficient, and works as a generator to charge a battery. You never plug it in because there is no plug. “We can do a 48-volt mild hybrid, or we can do a plug-in hybrid, but what is most interesting right now is the success we have had with ePower technology,” Ponz Pandikuthira, vice president of product planning, told Automotive News Europe.“ePower in Japan makes more money than Note made before we launched ePower. It’s an economies-of-scale thing,” he said. “It’s a very favorable equation. That is why we need to invest in this technology and bring it to markets outside of Japan.” Nissan has said it will bring ePower to the U.S., likely as an option on higher-end vehicles. The technology also will form a big part of Nissan’s electrification of the Infiniti line-up in 2021. Even though you put dinosaurs into it and not electrons, it's up to 15% more efficient than a diesel under the new WLTP testing. I think this is very interesting technology, and could strike a chord with buyers as Toyota are doing the groundwork with their advertising campaigns for their soft hybrids, but telling buyers they sell electric cars which charge themselves. Perhaps as a stop gap, i can see this technology working. And the fact it's so much cheaper for car makers makes me think they might try to push it - as the battery always drives the wheel plus the battery is smaller. However saying that, and looking at the rapidly changing economics of batteries, i can see it being a technology which ends up not being needed. If the costs keep coming down, at cell level and battery pack level, pure EV's will be cheaper than any other form of propulsion.   EVGO UPGRADES MORE THAN 20 FAST CHARGERS EVgo say they're making the electric vehicle charging experience as easy as possible for all drivers, and today's news is that they have added additional capacity at 21 California stations, meaning EVgo's network can power even more EVs. All of their new chargers have dual-standards, both CHAdeMO and CCS Combo at each station. 10 in San Francisco, 5 in San Diego, and 6 in L.A. Cathy Zoi, CEO of EVgo says "The old world is changing, and EVgo is rapidly expanding our network of over 1000 public fast chargers across the US so that more Americans can choose a better way to drive." CCS Combo connectors are used by the Chevrolet Bolt, BMW i3, and numerous other existing and forthcoming EV models from North American, European, and Asian auto manufacturers. CHAdeMO connectors are commonly used by the Nissan LEAF, Kia Soul EV, and (with an adaptor) Tesla vehicles. The 21 station upgrades from EVgo throughout California now have the capabilities to charge EVs using either CHAdeMO or CCS Combo connectors at both chargers. Find our more at evgo.com   GRID CONFIDENT OF MEETING EV DEMAND, SAYS MINISTER In the UK, let's get onto the subject of whether driving an EV will melt the grid and send us back to the dark ages. "The electrification of road transport will only result in a 10 per cent increase in demand for electricity by 2050, according to a government minister." and reported by UtilityWeek: "Richard Harrington told the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) select committee that National Grid had expressed confidence about the ability of the power networks to cope with the mass switch over, at the recent first meeting of the government’s electric vehicle (EV) task force." Richard Bruce director of energy, technology and innovation at the Department for Transport, said that the UK already had ‘one of the best public infrastructures in Europe’ for charging points with around 12,000 already installed, including 400 in the last 30 days alone.   COMMUNITY   From Ryan Hoffman: “The other day, you mentioned VW hadn't been fined in Europe for the emissions scandal. Hopefully, the link below works, looks like the Germans lowered the boom on Vee Dub. Forgive me if I'm incorrectly remembering what you said, I didn't go back to the show notes or re listen to the podcast. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-44474781. Also, there's a conference here in Portland, OR next week. I'm not affiliated with it in any way but perhaps a quick shout out to the listeners here in the Northwest could generate some interest as well as some reports back to you on the event. https://evroadmapconference.com/” “The public prosecutor issued an administrative order against Volkswagen on Wednesday, imposing the maximum penalty of €5m, and then €995m for the “disgorgement of economic benefits”. This refers to repayment of profits accrued through illegal or unethical means.” Can you help spread the word about electric cars?
