Keskustelemme sarjojen nimistä. Millaisia eri ratkaisuja sarjojen nimeämiseen käytetään, ja millainen merkitys nimellä on tarinalle, markkinoinnille ja lukijan odotuksille? Rowlingin transvastaisesta kommentista, koska ei tajunnut mihin se viittasi, ja pahoitteli sitä jälkikäteen - Sama kävi uudemmankin kerran - Joss Whedon - Buffy, vampyyrintappaja - Angel - Firefly - Whedon rankaisi näyttelijä Charisma Carpenteria muuttamalla tämän hahmon juonikaarta, kun tämä tuli raskaaksi ilman lupaa kesken kuvausten - Ja kaikkea muuta - Lani Diane Rich on miettinyt asiaa siltä kannalta, että TV-sarjoja tekevät kuitenkin sadat ihmiset, joten onko oikein heitä kohtaan julistaa sarja pannaan vain yhden näkyvän törttöilijän takia? Hänen mietteitään aiheesta voi kuunnella esimerkiksi Buffy-aiheisesta podcastista Still Pretty ja Sandman-aiheisen Endless-podcastin jaksosta It's About Power (S1.11 "Dream of 1000 Cats/Calliope") noin kohdasta 41:15 alkaen - Jakso 32 ja jakso 33, jossa puhuimme siitä miten Act-age-sarja lopetettiin, kun sen kahdesta tekijästä toinen syyllistyi rikoksiin - Rurouni Kenshinin tekijä Nobuhiro Watsuki sai vuonna 2018 sakkorangaistuksen lapsipornon hallussapidosta - John Lasseter sai lähteä Pixarilta - Braven ohjaaja savustettiin ulos Pixarilta, ja siksi leffasta tuli erilainen kuin piti - Animation Addicts -podcast - Takahiro Sakurai jäi kiinni siitä, että oli pettänyt kahta naista yhtä aikaa 10 vuoden ajan - Sakurai menetti roolin tulevassa Mononoke-elokuvassa - H.P. Locecraft oli kauhea rasisti, mutta toisaalta hän onkin jo kuollut 02:28:32 – LUKUJONOSSA: MY CUTE LITTLE KITTEN - My Cute Little Kitten - Milk Morinaga - Petterin tootti My Cute Little Kittenistä - Maaretin tootti My Cute Little Kittenistä - Jakso 12, jossa puhuimme Hana & Hina After Schoolista - Office lady -tarinoihin keskittyvä Syrup-yuriantologiasarja 02:42:50 – LUKUJONOSSA: VINLAND SAGA 11-13 - Vinland Saga - Jakso 3, jossa käsittelimme sarjaa edellisen kerran - Thorfinn - Knuut Suuri - Gudrid - Jomsviikingit - Leif Erikinpoika - Planetes, Makoto Yukimuran aiempi manga - Pitkä-Thorkell - Mi'kmaq-heimot - Maan lapset -kirjasarja - Ja siinä sitten kävi niin kuin kävi 03:13:39 – LOPETUS

With Mike as a known Kenshin fan, he tries to reconcile his love of the series and the sins of its creator and balance why he should and shouldn't care about it Mike Nicolas, James Austin, Kevin Ng, Mohamed Sharmarke, Geoff Greig Visit our website for more information and links: Website: animeroundtable.com Twitter and IG: @animeroundtable Email: animeroundtable@gmail.com Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/animeroundtable YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5U1yZNlQ1VYFH_fV26bYwA Discord: https://discord.gg/Dg38nRm3

When the Bourne Identity came out, everyone freaked out because the hand to hand combat was so good.  Fast Forward to 2011 and people are loosing their head over The Raid.  Fast forward a little more and John  Wick is now the gold standard in action movies - though I have to say I really enjoyed Nobody (handy episode link).  When it comes to sword fighting though, it went from Star Wars to Highlander to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and has slowly improved, but its not taken a jump forward.  Until now.Rurouni Kenshi is a leap...its a LAUNCH forward in sword fighting terms.  Its as close to real life anime sword fighting as we have right now.  Join me and geek out on the techniques used, the levels of fighting, the study of the choreography and how a character decision makes the movies fight so much better.Thank you.Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/kwawwpodcast)

Amanda and Jenn discuss cuddly YA books, friendships in fiction, nonfiction for LGBTQ+ allies, and more in this week’s episode of Get Booked. Follow the podcast via RSS, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Stitcher. Feedback Nervermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow (rec’d by Summer) The Emporium trilogy: Furyborn by Claire Legrand Rurouni Kenshi (manga) by Nobuhiro Watsuki; Moribito by Nahoko Uehashi; Keigo Higashino, Malice; Banana Yoshimoto, Kitchen; Hiromi Kawakami, Nakano Thrift Shop (rec’d by Kelly) Questions 1. Thank you for putting together such a great podcast! I listen to it every week. I am writing because my boyfriend and I are both avid readers and we want to read something together. The problem is we read very different genres.  He likes historical books and books about leadership. Some of his favorite books are Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, Atomic Habits by James Clear, and Think Again by Adam Grant. I like romance, fantasy, and literary fiction. I am open to reading nonfiction but it’s kind of hit and miss for me. I got an ARC of Miseducated by Brandon P. Fleming and I really liked that. I’d be open to reading a self-improvement book with him because I think that might fit the bill.  Some of my absolute favorite books are The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin, Beach Read by Emily Henry, and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab. Thank you! -Jessica 2. I am in desperate need of some book recommendations. I’m usually a really big reader, but I’ve been in a bit of a slump lately and am hoping that you can help me. Problem is, I don’t really know what I’m looking for. I’m a teenager, so YA, and I really enjoy cuddly romance (I don’t like pining so the sooner the couple gets together the better) but I don’t like books that have romance as the whole plot (also, the romance doesn’t have to be male/female). I also like 1920s detective stories, sci-fi with ensemble casts, Good Omens-type books, and epic questing stories. I only ask that: it’s not SUPER heavy/dark, there is minimal pining, it isn’t a comic or graphic novel, and it is something that will hold an average teen’s attention past the first few chapters. And has a snarky side character that isn’t a human. Thanks a million! -Quinn 3. Thanks for a great podcast! I graduated college six years ago and find that the friendships I formed then remain my most intense to this day. I’m in close touch with these friends, but, as an international student who moved back to Europe after finishing my degree, have seen some of them in person only once or twice after graduation and others not at all. The nostalgia for the days when I could just knock on their dorm room doors is real!  Can you recommend books that capture the tight-knit nature of friendships formed during a formative period in one’s life in close quarters? Please nothing about friendships buckling under the stresses of adult life; as I say, we’re still close. I’m just looking for a comforting, intelligent read for moments when I particularly miss my friends.  -Luisa 4. Hey y’all, I want to get my Dad a book for Father’s Day that we can both read and discuss. He can be a bit of an *old white man,* and I’m looking for something that casually centers a non-white, non-Western culture and preferably has some strong female characters. He primarily reads Jack Reacher-style thrillers and the occasional high/epic fantasy when it falls in his lap (generally of the LOTR variety, basically still just about problematic white male Europeans). The Poppy War by RF Kuang is closest thing I know of to what I’m looking for but I’m hoping to find something I haven’t read before. I hope that the book can generate some conversation/thought about social justice issues today, but please don’t make me talk about explicit sex stuff with my Dad… -Caroline 5. Hey Book Riot! I wonder if you have any recommendations for a non-fiction (or fiction?) book for LGBTQ+ community allies? As in… I want to be able to explain things better if I get into an argument with a conservatively thinking person. Thank you!

It's the epic of our time, a saga in scope and size unparalleled by any other comic out there right now. And, after years of going "That's too long, no way" we've actually dived into One Piece. We share our queerpinions on: • Oda's art in terms of body horror, action, and depictions of women's bodies• Our thoughts on the series' villains thus far (TLDR: they suck)• Some very poor handling of themes in the Skypiea arc• The series' sense of joy, whimsy, and creativity• Roronoa Zora being a flaming f****t You can find the episode on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Podcast Addict! Content warning: We’re a fairly NSFW podcast that includes use of reclaimed homophobic slurs. Our discussion this week contains spoilers up through One Piece chapter 302 and the end of the Skypiea arc. Content-wise we touch on the series' hypersexualized renderings of women and girls, monstrous depictions of fat people, racial caricatures, imperialism, and poor handlings of plot points involving indigenous people and their conflicts with colonizers. We also briefly discuss Oda's relationship with Nobuhiro Watsuki and the charges against Watsuki regarding child pornography.

Manga Mavericks @ Movies Month is going strong! We’ve been posting new movie reviews on our Youtube channel every day and plan to do so for the entire month of May! These reviews will also be uploaded to our podcast feed just a few days afterward. I’ve just put up our Ghost in the Shell/Power Rangers podcast, a pairing of two remakes of beloved 90’s franchises that weren’t particularly well-received. Check it out and look forward to more new @ Movies podcasts popping up on our feed this month! Of course, @ Movies isn’t all we’re doing this month! We’ve got regular Manga Mavericks episodes planned too, just like the one you’re about to listen to! This week’s episode is kind of a back-to-basics affair. Both your regular Mavericks are present, there’s a normal amount of news to talk about, and we cover a few recent Jump Starts and one-shots to cap off the show! A pretty normal episode compared to the past couple of atypical entries. Honestly, the only thing that’s missing is a Bookscan list to talk about, but I’m sure we’ll have plenty to say about the next one. Before you listen to the show, I want to emphasize the content warning for the Gerard Jones story. There are some extremely graphic details we had to acknowledge that should be sickening to any sane human being. It made me physically ill when we were discussing it, and then again when I had to edit it. If you can’t stomach hearing about sexual violence towards children, then please, you are better off skipping that news piece because it is extremely upsetting. But hey, this isn’t a dour podcast by any stretch. I mean, we got to talk about loop theory, kaiju that can shoot lasers out of its arms, and a talking house that can transform into a giant mech! It’s irresponsible to ignore real-world problems to consume entertainment, but our discussion of these recent Jump Starts was a nice reminder of how valuable it can be to have a good manga to brighten up a bad day. Editor's Note, 2020: As a consequence of Nobuhiro Watsuki's charges being dropped (as discussed on this podcast), we've since reevaluated our feelings on Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro's own allegations and are less enthusiastic and supportive of him and his work. We still feel our discussion of Build King is worth sharing, but we wanted to note that our feelings on this comic and its creator are more complicated and critical now. We’re back baby! Manga Mavericks has been on a hiatus recently, but we’ve returned to end the year with a bang. That’s right, since 2017 is over, it’s time to look back at the last year of manga and highlight the best of the best. First we’ve got an hour and a half of news highlights from the past three months, giving our thoughts on some of the most important news stories we missed. Except for licensing news, because trying to recap everything Seven Seas has licensed this year would take a whole show in of itself. The podcast really grew this year as we tackled excellent topics like “The Future of Shonen Jump” and “The State of Shonen Sunday,” and we had guests from the manga industry on like Annaliese Christman and Jeff Ruberg. Manga Mavericks @ Movies debuted this year giving us a fun outlet to talk about movies with friends like Ethan and Jonathan, the latter of which also joining us for my favorite project we did this year – The Pokemon Adventures retrospectives. Not to mention we launched our Youtube channel early in the year, which finally surpassed the 100 subscriber threshold in November and continues to grow. It’s really incredible just how much we accomplished with the show this year even with our short hiatus, and we think 2018 is going to be an even better year for us. Then it’s time for David to actually watch anime for once: In This Corner of the World, Fate: Apocrypha, and Fate/stay night: Heaven’s Feel. And at the very end: a special call for our listeners to help defend Net Neutrality! Topics include: Who's That Pedophile?, Duke Nukem the Fate servant, and the fact that Phos from Land of the Lustrous is just Gem Akko. Send us feedback at podcast@anigamers.com! On this episode, Dennis, Eve, Han, and Karen are joined by special guest Bryan Newton, director on Rick & Morty and previously Teen Titans GO! plus host of the Animation Success Stories Podcast. Bit of a downer in the intro as we discuss Hiromi Tsuru's passing and Nobuhiro Watsuki's arrest. The discussion does pick back up as we discuss the banned from Toonami episode "Hot Springs Planet Tenrei" including the fashion choices, fan service, villain ineptitude, and just all in all silliness of it before we get into the three-episode finale. The big fights at the end, the reveal of the mysteries behind the Galactic Leyline and Melfina, ludicrous space ship combat! What will happen to the crew of the Outlaw Star at the end? Listen to our discussion, and feel free to add your own on social media or email, like listener Andrew. A special thank you for listening at the end of the episode! And who let that cricket in here?! Yo! Here’s how the story goes you find out. About a manga in Shonen Jump, there’s no doubt. The podcaster whose eye is on it he’ll say “I’ll be making a podcast, s’what I’m gonna be making!” So we set sights on One Piece, Eiichiro Oda’s monolithic manga that has been enthralling fans worldwide for over 20 years. To help us commemorate this hardy occasion, we brought aboard Sam Leach, a shipmate over at the One Piece Podcast, to help us make merry over our One Piece memories. During the course of our three hour reminiscence, we’re reminded how through it all - through all the troubled times, through the heartache and through the pain - we know that One Piece will be there to stand by us, just like we know we’ll stand by it. We are on a cruise, and have been for the last twenty years. No matter how much longer this journey may last, know that there is always room for you if you want to be our friend and join this adventure with us. Together we will find everything that we’re looking for. So come aboard and bring along all your hopes and dreams! Being a One Piece fan will satisfy them like no other manga will. Oh, and we talk about news for a bit too. It was a pretty great month for manga in North America! Lots of Bookscan representation, Berserk was finally made available digitally, and there were some great licenses from Viz Media at Comic Con! Back in Japan there was a controversy over Yuna of Yuragi Manor that we spend quite a bit of time dissecting, and probably will come back to as a broader discussion topic on fanservice down the line. It was pretty fortuitous that the One Piece live-action tv show was announced the week we recorded this so we wouldn’t have an awkward transition between topics! Editor's Note, 2020: This podcast was recorded before the revelations about Nobuhiro Watsuki and the subsequent failure to prosecute him for his crime. As a consequence of the Watsuki situation, we've since reevaluated our feelings on Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro's own allegations and are less enthusiastic and supportive of him and his work. We still feel our discussion of his comic essay about Eiichiro Oda is worth including, but we wanted to note that our feelings on this comic and its creator are more complicated and critical now. This podcast is very much a product of its time, and we humbly ask you to keep this in mind as you listen to it. It’s time for another episode of All-Comic Presents: Manga Mavericks Presents: Manga Fights sponsored by Geoff Martin Art Sales (not really)! Operating in the same fashion as Screen Junkies’ Movie Fights, Manga Fights features passionate manga fans debating it out over manga-related several topics both intriguing and insane. With the Manga Mavericks as your hosts, intelligent conversations, heated arguments, and unintentional comedy is always sure to abound! To honor the recently concluded Shonen Jump action manga Toriko, the Mavericks enlist their friend and fellow Shonen Jump podcaster Maxy Barnard of Friendship! Effort! Victory! to debate the series with them! LumRanmaYasha faces off against Maxy on 10 Toriko-related topics, each one hungering to take the crown of world's nerdiest Toriko fan. Will Maxy be able to out-eat two-time champion Lum? Or is Lum's thirst to win as bottomless as their reservoir of Toriko quotes? Find out as the boys debate about who the best character in Toriko is (spoiler: it's Midora), whether Toriko diminished in quality after the time-skip, if Jesse Eisenburg would make a good Toriko, and a whole bunch more! Editor's Note, 2020: This podcast was recorded before the revelations about Nobuhiro Watsuki and the subsequent failure to prosecute him for his crime. As a consequence of the Watsuki situation, we've since reevaluated our feelings on Shimabukuro's own allegations and are less enthusiastic and supportive of him and his work. We still feel this episode is worth sharing, but we wanted to note that our feelings on this series and its creator are more complicated and critical now. This podcast is very much a product of its time, and we humbly ask you to keep this in mind as you listen to it. ...And boy was it ever big! Lots of hot and exciting news came out of AE this year, and this week your titular mavericks, Colton and Sid, run down each juicy bit of licensing news and other cool stuff looming on the horizon. But that's not all! We also discuss some other fresh developments, from the revamped Shonen Jump website, to Kodansha re-licensing former Del Ray titles for digital distribution, and perhaps the biggest news of all, Bleach finally actually decisively definitively inexorably assuredly honest-to-god totally ending soon! For reals this time! Lastly, we answer a Q&A asking us why we love* Rurouni Kenshin, leading to a pretty passionate discussion that's not to be missed! NOTE: The character whose name I keep forgetting in the Kenshin discussion is Kujiranami. Also, he has a cannon for a hand, not an axe. Not sure how I mis-remembered something like that. ^^, *Editor's Note, 2020: This podcast was recorded over a year before Nobuhiro Watsuki was arrested for possession of child pornography. As such, please keep in mind that our opinions of Watsuki and Kenshin have soured since the recording of this episode, and we no longer stand by much of what we said about them here. Enjoy the show, and follow us on twitter at @sniperking323 and @lumranmayasha. If there’s something you want to ask that’s too big to tweet, drop us a line in the comments below, or e-mail us at mangamavericks@gmail.com! Thanks for listening!
