What I'm Reading: The Book of Charlie: Wisdom from the Remarkable American Life of a 109-Year-Old Man Book by David Von Drehle

It's Sunday. On weekends, I usually put the finishing touches on the upcoming episode. I won't say what it is; I'll let it be a surprise, but it's a really special conversation that made me think—you'll find out tomorrow. As I was recording the episode's intro, it dawned on me that it might be a good time to record this bonus episode. It's been on my mind for a while to share with you what I'm reading. Of course, I read books, newsletters, shareholder letters, articles, and more produced by my upcoming guests, but I also read beyond that. With certain persistence, luck, synchronicity, and serendipity, some of those reads will lead to new guest invitations and episodes. This week I want to share with you my thoughts on the The Book of Charlie: Wisdom from the Remarkable American Life of a 109-Year-Old Man Book by David Von Drehle. I already lined up his other books for future reading. I'll start with the writing style; I just love the way the author writes. It reminds me of how my brain works and how I like to collect information and learn. I picture an ever wider embrace; your arms go out to the sides, and you catch as much as possible, more than you thought. The spark of curiosity that starts with a singular bit of information, one idea, takes me on a wide and long-ranging journey. I return like an avid traveler with pockets, backpacks, duffels, and suitcases of memories, ideas, images, and observations—the heavier, the better. That's the image I have in mind, and the author delivers on that front more than any other right in can think of right this minute. He tells the true story of a neighbor he meets, a centenarian, Charlie White, who lives in Kansas City. He tells the story in a very unique way. We learn not only about Charlie's eventful, rich, challenging, and inspiring life but also about the big and small historical backdrop of the life he lived in a century that took us from horse carriages and early radio to space travel, social media, and video calls, and more. Charlie was a doctor and physician, and his profession has undergone an equal, if not bigger, transformation than the world around him. As a licensed pilot myself, I love open skies. Therefore, I had to appreciate the brief but important story of Charlie's marriage to a famous woman pilot, a legendary aviator who grew up with Amelia Earhart's accomplishments in the sky and lived a dream of her own. The author mentions Walt Disney, Ernest Hemingway, President Truman, and other historical figures whose paths crossed or overlapped with Charlie's. Without giving too much away, I'll tell you that you'll meet the prohibition-era gangsters, and you'll head out on an expedition to the Amazonian jungle. Beyond the story of one person, Charlie White, we learn about what it takes to live a good life, and David Von Drehle dives into psychology, philosophy, and science that propose an interpretation, explanation, and maybe even a blueprint for a life well lived. I'll drop a hint here that perseverance, optimism, and ingenuity can help as much as turning challenges and life's dead ends into opportunities and new vistas. There aren't many books I can't put down for a few days until I'm done; this one was such a book. If anything of what you just heard resonated with you, don't hesitate to pick up the book and send me an email sharing your thoughts. I don't know the author, but I'd love to meet him; I don't get anything in return for sharing my thoughts here; if you get the book, consider it a good friend's reading recommendation. It's just the opinion of one curious reader who couldn't keep it to himself, what an incredible read it was. I was so moved by the book that on this beautiful Sunday, I felt compelled to share it with you. Have a lovely afternoon, and tune in tomorrow for the regular Talking Billions episode. (don't) Waste Water!
WTF is Happening with Water Stocks?

(don't) Waste Water!

Video Version: https://youtu.be/8hjsmIyC9ggDiving into the world of water stocks is like riding a roller coaster that's mostly going down. Imagine putting your hard-earned money into companies that promise to clean water or make our water use smarter, only to find out later that your investment has shrunk big time! And the other way round: imagine you've worked decades to build a water company, and you're turning it public, and its valuation is only going down, and down, and even more down... I looked into 50-ish listed water tech companies to get to the bottom of what's happening with water stocks. It's not about pointing out any bad apples; it's about understanding a trend where even the companies that were supposed to be the next big thing in water tech are struggling to keep their stock prices from dropping. Why is this happening? It's not because these companies aren't trying to do great things for our planet. They are! But turning groundbreaking water technology into a successful business is a long and bumpy road. Plus, many investors jump in excited by the big promises but bail out when they realize it's not a quick win. This leaves these pioneering water tech companies in a tough spot. They need money to grow and make their technologies work on a big scale, but if their stock prices fall, getting that money becomes really hard. So, what can they, you, we do? We need to get smarter about investing in water tech. We need to understand that backing these companies is not just for a quick profit but for helping them build something that matters - which in turn, don't worry, will turn in money.#WaterStocks #WaterInvestment #WaterTech

His perspective on why the space is growing so quickly and the opportunities for the future is invaluable to advisors to get a better understanding of why the crypto space is not going away. As excited as I was to talk crypto and NFTs with him, the end of our conversation about what he wants from a financial advisor was amazing. Piedmont's market cap has grown 100X from $10M to $1B+ in 4 years as it has progressed early stage exploration with 19 drill holes on 500 acres in North Carolina to an expected definitive feasibility study this September & potential start of construction in early 2022. Piedmont CEO Keith Phillips discusses PLL's robust updated economic study, improved sustainability profile and near term strategic objectives both on financing the Piedmont Lithium Project in North Carolina and Piedmont's own consolidation/M&A endeavors in Quebec and possibly elsewhere. Time Index 0-2:00 - Intro - new scoping study reflects a near doubling of NPV to $1.9B, steady state EBITDA growing from $230M to $400M, 31% after-tax IRR and 3 year payback period. 2:00-6 - Sustainable Lithium Hydroxide Business - Independent LCA analysis by Minviro - the preliminary analysis shows 3 key metrics - water use/land footprint and carbon intensity - Piedmont is a stand out in all 3. What drives the numbers on all three? How is it possible for Piedmont's carbon intensity to be only a quarter of China? 6:15-8:15 - Innovative Hydroxide Technology Piedmont is using a “sulphate free” Metso Outotec process. What are the benefits of this over sulfuric acid roasting process currently used in China and planned for Australia hydroxide projects? 8:30-15:15 - Hydroxide vs. Carbonate, Price Premium - Why is Piedmont focused on lithium hydroxide rather than carbonate? - In a world of $100/t a ton carbon taxes we believe the 15t of CO2 per tonne of hydroxide difference with China will mean a $1,500/t premium for Piedmont - do you agree? - Will we see an even higher price premium in the USA given transport/logistics benefits such as lower inventory needs given close proximity and no risk of import duties? 15:15 - 23:45 - Bigger Production/Stronger Economics/Lowest Cost Global Hydroxide Producer - The scoping study outlines a near 50% increase in planned production - 30ktpa - presume this is on the back of the increased resource size? - Considering Carolina head grade of about 1.1% vs. the world's best hard rock deposit Greenbushes at 2%, how is it that Piedmont can be the lowest cost producer of hydroxide? 24:00 - 33:00 - Strategic Dialogues/Process - The 2021 study has higher price assumptions for SC6 and LiOH that are similar to current spot prices - are you seeing increased interest in off-take at pricing around the studies assumptions? - The Capex for the project has grown to ~$800M. What is the timeline for completion of DFS, full financing, financial investment decision, construction start? 33:00 - 38:00 - Piedmont as M&A Consolidator - Any update on Sayona/North American Lithium? - Do you see scope for further consolidation of hard rock projects and do you have any plans for additional project investments? - You have recently appointed Tier One global investment banks JP Morgan and Evercore.
