This student-led forum, the last in the 2024-2025 school year, offers an opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue about social media and political content.rnrnSocial media has accelerated to become the most preferred news source for teenagers and young adults. Across the board, research concludes that platforms including Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube drive youth consumption, often on the most contentious political issues. The resulting content has inspired many sides of debate, including proponents and opponents of moderation, free speech, and fact-checking.rnrnThis student-led forum offers a rare opportunity to understand how new generations receive their news content. How does, and should, Gen Z critically analyze their political news feed? Is fact-checking a moderate approach to tackle misinformation or does it stifle free expression? Compared to legacy media outlets, in what ways are modern news and content sources better equipped to address the youth?

On November 22, 2014, just after 3:30 in the afternoon, a 12-year-old boy was shot by a police officer outside of the Cudell Recreation Center. Tamir Rice had been playing with a toy gun, an airsoft replica that was missing the telltale orange tip. The officer shot Rice twice less than two seconds after getting out of the police cruiser which had not even come to a complete stop. Rice died from his wounds the following day.rnrnThis tragedy was seen by many to be part of an ongoing pattern of excessive force by the Cleveland Division of Police. In the intervening years, many reform efforts, including a consent decree and a new citizen-led oversight commission, have been attempted and implemented to not only reduce violence but also improve relations between police and the communities they serve.
In the 2nd youth led forum of the year, we will focus on how racial inequities in education are deeply entrenched in the American school system, affecting not just individual students but the broader landscape of educational achievement and opportunity.rnrnResearch shows that schools with higher concentrations of students from marginalized racial and ethnic groups are more likely to experience underfunding, overcrowded classrooms, and limited access to advanced coursework and resources. This systemic inequality can contribute to lower graduation rates and diminished college and career readiness across the board, impacting the ability of schools to produce well-rounded, critical-thinking scholars.rnrnAccording to a report by the U.S. Department of Education, schools serving predominantly minority students receive roughly $23 billion less in funding each year than those serving predominantly white students. These disparities not only hinder the academic potential of individual students but also compromise the overall quality of education in America, limiting the nation's ability to cultivate diverse, informed, and capable leaders for the future.rnrnThis forum will dive into the root causes of these inequities, their impact on students of all backgrounds, and what can be done to create a more equitable and inclusive educational system.

The mental health of teenagers has become a significant issue in America, and that's not just because of the pandemic we've endured. Parents, mental health professionals, and policy makers are concerned about how teens are managing the impact of social media, and the stress that seems to be built into the high school experience, in addition to larger issues shaping an uncertain future--the rise in gun violence, climate change, and the threats to democracy and civil rights.rnrnU.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy has made youth mental health a priority for his office, and in December 2021, he issued a public advisory urging a response. In a special live recording of his House Calls podcast, Dr. Murthy will interview author and clinical child psychologist Lisa Damour about her recent New York Times best selling book, The Emotional Lives of Teeenagers: Raising Connected, Capable, and Compassionate Adolescents.rnrnDr. Damour is also the author of two other New York Times best sellers, Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood and Under Pressure: Confronting the Epidemic of Stress and Anxiety in Girls. As "The Nation's Doctor" he holds the rank of Vice Admiral of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, commanding a uniformed service of over 6,000 public health officers.rnrnThis special recording of House Calls will include a live audience of parents of teens from across Greater Cleveland.
In 2021, Black women were mayors of eight of the 100 U.S. cities with the largest populations. It was a record number. In a November 2021 New York Times article about the rise of Black women mayors, scholar and voting rights expert David Bositis said, "This is the age of Black women in politics. This has been culminating for a long time."rnrnThis rise in Black women in elected positions can be attributed to community activism, changing demographics, targeted recruitment efforts, and increased support from major organizations. "Before, it used to be that Black women didn't run. They were the organizers and the campaign volunteers, but the men were the ones who were running for office," Sharon Wright Austin, a professor at the University of Florida, said in the same article. "But now you're seeing Black women not only organizing campaigns and working in communities but having the confidence that they can run for office themselves."rnrnIn Northeast Ohio, Black women lead three of our towns-Maple Heights, Richmond Heights, and Newburgh Heights-representing a combined total of more than 33,000 residents. Two of the mayors are the first Black women to lead their respective cities.rnrnJoin the City Club as we mark International Women's Day for a conversation led by Sheila Wright with Mayors Annette Blackwell, Kim Thomas, and Gigi Traore about the role Black women leaders play in our changing political landscape.

Families and medical professionals have long understood the importance of continuity in behavioral healthcare. Too often, treatment of mental illness, substance abuse, and other harmful addictive behaviors is a fragmented experience, handled by separate providers and relying on hospitalization or law enforcement during times of crisis. When treated in such a disjointed manner, patients, who often have additional health issues, can find it more difficult to access treatment and improve their health. Coordinating the organization and delivery of services can help communities respond more effectively and improve health outcomes.rnrnThis integrated approach is even more critical as Ohio faces a dire combination of an ongoing opioid crisis, the effects of the covid pandemic, and a worsening shortage of healthcare workers. The covid pandemic not only exacerbated these issues, but added to rates of depression, anxiety, and addiction, as people dealt with the resulting grief, uncertainty, and disruption of life. The effects were particularly acute on the young and on historically underrepresented communities.rnrnIn his State of the State address this spring, Governor DeWine identified improvements including school programs and Medicaid reform but, while noting "it still is not enough," called for increased services and treatment in order to build "community capacity for care."rnrnThis forum launches the City Club's series on behavioral healthcare and looks at how close we are to creating a true continuum of care here in northeast Ohio. Where are the gaps and what can be shored up?

Procrastination is the thief of time.'nnWhile Mr. Micawber became a widely quoted character for pronouncing the proverb' procrastination is the thief of time,' he was hardly original. In reality, the phrase is an adage created by English writer Edward Young. nnYoung wrote a 10,000-line poem known as 'The Complaint' or 'Night-Thoughts on Life, Death, and Immortality or simply 'Night-Thoughts.' In this extensive poem, the poet muses over death over the courses of nine' nights,' i.e., nine sections.nnYoung's use of the proverb 'procrastination is the thief of time' goes beyond caution against putting things off. Instead, the poet suggests that time wasted procrastinating one thing is time wasted doing nothing of any consequence. nnIt goes to say that if we delay filling our taxes by arranging our spices alphabetically, the fact remains that we should have done something of far more importance. nnHow Does the Proverb Describe 'Procrastination'?nnEdward Young describes a procrastinator as someone who procrastinates in doing things at the right time and finds themselves in situations where they had little time to complete the task.nnTypically, people procrastinate because:n•tThe task is long and complicated. n•tThe activity is tedious and not important. n•tThey prefer doing their pleasurable activities.n•tThey have a careless attitude and believe that nothing wrong will happen if they miss their deadline.n•tThey are over-confident and think that they have enough time/competency to complete the task. n•tThey do it as a result of peer pressure and fear mockery or ridicule if they hand in work early. n•tThey do it due to pure laziness.nnWhy is Procrastination the Thief of Time?nn'Procrastination,' deferring a task or putting something off, is the 'thief of time' because you waste time by delaying tasks. nnThis hypothesis potentially embraces two meanings: you are wasting time when you could have accomplished what you need to achieve. And that all procrastination is time-wasting.nnLet's discuss the top common examples of procrastination:n•tSomeone who spends several days thinking about starting an essential assignment, thus they have to rush to finish work in a hasty and stressful manner.n•tA person who wastes months before approaching the person they're romantically interested in, thus missing their chance to enter a relationship with them. n•tSomeone who wastes years before starting a project they're passionate about, thus struggling wSupport the show

What many professionals don't know is that your habits also have a direct impact on your productivity.nnRegardless of how well you plan out your long-term and short-term goals, ensuring that every activity is carried out effectively and efficiently while rejecting distractions and intrusions, is an important step.nnWhen running a business, it is easy to ignore the small habits that bite into your time. The assumption that taking a few minutes every day to indulge in these small habits won't affect your general productivity is a dangerous notion for busy business professionals and entrepreneurs.nnThe value of these negligible minutes adds up to a significant number of hours that can be felt weekly, monthly, and even yearly. When studying the efficiency and productivity of the year, the collective minutes or hours allocated to these small habits could have been utilized effectively to improve your business' performance.nnLet's explore 5 small habits that secretly affect your productivity.nn1. Failing to Plan Your DaynMany times, you may want to wing it. Take the day as it comes. When thinking of facing your daily challenges by writing it out and planning ahead with specific time blocks, you may choose to forgo this part of your day and attend to activities as they come.nnThis small habit has a much larger impact on your productivity than you can even begin to fathom. This is because by failing to plan your day ahead, you cannot organize and prioritize your daily activities; therefore, not being as productive as you can and need to be. nnThis leads to overwhelm, postponed tasks, lack of focus, multiple intrusions, and distractions that greatly affect your productivity and overall efficiency.nn2. Continuously Checking Your EmailsnEmailing is one of the preferred choices of communication amongst businesses and their clients, partners, and suppliers alike. Due to its ability to instantly search and receive messages, emails remain a trusted mode of communication to keep you informed at all times.nnThe challenge business professionals face with emails is that continuously checking emails has become a habit that chews away at a lot of your very valuable time. Sometimes, you can spend hours searching and refreshing your emails and responding to emails and messages. Doing this continuously has a negative impact on your productivity.nnThough it is important to be informed, utilize an important time management skill like time blocking to help you check your emails and function at an optimal level. Section an hour or a few minutes of your day to check your emails. This can be done either once in the morning, around 11:00, is what I recommend, and then around 4:00pm to be on top of your inbox. nnDoing this helps you focus on more important tasks and significantly improves your productivity.nn3. Checking Social MedianSocial media is now more than a way to view memes, gifs, and videos. It has transformed into a platform that benefits businesses at every turn, when managed properly.nnAs an entrepreneur, you may be handling your social media by yourself.nnThe only challenge with this is that checking your social media can be a slippery slope, as you might already know. You may open any of your platforms to reply to a message or just to take a look at your insights or performance for a minute.nnThis can quickly devolve into hours of watching funny videos, liking posts, and jumping from page to page, and one attraction to another.nnInstead of doing this, simply turn off all your social media notifications and put your phone out of sight. When you do this, you can focus on the most important high payoff tasks you have to handle to move your business forward.nnStrictly follow the allotSupport the show
[[:encoded, "We are all looking for ways to streamline our efforts at work – after all, who doesn't want to get more done in less time? The idea of working smarter and not necessarily harder is not a new concept. It is one that the business and self-help industries have spent years tackling through thought leadership and research. nnUnfortunately, many people falsely assume that smart work can completely override the need for hard work, which simply isn't true. It takes hard work to learn how to work in a smarter fashion. It takes hard work and discipline to implement new business strategies and perspectives. nnIt is only when working hard and working smart find a symbiotic relationship that true power in business productivity and effectiveness are found. With that said, I'm going to talk about 3 principles that you need to implement in order to strike a beautiful balance between the two.nn1. Delegate Non-Essential TasksnnThis one should be a no-brainer, but time and time again people get stuck in the rut of doing things that aren't the best use of their time or their talents. Outsourcing mind-numbing or repetitive tasks can be an immediately effective and a smart way to free up your workday time, so that you don't have to work so hard to complete everything on your, probably lengthy, to-do list.nnIf you could cut that list of daily obligations from 10 things to 6, would you find yourself less stressed and with more bandwidth to truly pour your heart and soul into your day's workload? Chances are good that that answer to that question is a solid, “yes!” But yet so many people refuse to let go of those things that someone else could easily handle.nnPerhaps it is because of a need to feel in control, or worry that the person handling those tasks would not do it properly. Regardless, if you put in the hard work upfront of hiring the right person for the job the first time around, you will be saving yourself an incredible amount of time down the line. nnDownload a Free Delegation List Sample Exercise to help you identify more activities to delegate, by going to https://www.accountabilitycoach.com/delegation-list-sample/.nn2. Avoid the Siren Call of Multi-TaskingnnWhile multi-tasking tricks our minds into believing we are getting more things done at one time, we are actually just taking longer to accomplish small tasks, while simultaneously overloading our brains and producing subtle levels of stress that our bodies struggle to release. nnScientifically speaking, our brains are not even wired to do multiple things at once; they are just really, really good at switching back and forth quickly, fooling us into thinking we're being hyper-productive.nnIf your goal is to work smarter and not harder, then you will need to re-evaluate how you look at the effectiveness of single tasking. By focusing solely on one activity at a time, you will not only be more likely to do the task with excellence, but your brain will become less burned out and you will have less stress built up in your system by the end of the day.nn3. Limit Yourself To A Few Top-Tier Tasks Per DaynnWe've all been there – staring down the barrel of a task list that is laughably long. The trick to harnessing a work-smarter attitude is to structure your week such that you are only taking on a few top-level projects each day. nnFor example, don't schedule back-to-back meetings on the same day you also schedule an important client presentation and have a looming project deadline. This is setting yourself up for failure at worst, and unnecessary stress at best. You are the only person in control of your schedule, so make it work for you and not against you! By looking at your week or your month and then evenly spacing out your big-ticket items, you are using wisdom to set you up for success.nnDepending on the type of work you do, you Support the show

[[:encoded, "You've probably read it all. You've opened multiple pages and tabs on the internet in pursuit of that crucial knowledge on how to create even better business goals, so you can accelerate your results.nnAs a business owner, your goals represent more than numbers on a scale. They serve as important milestones that motivate you and immortalize your contributions to your business, and to those you serve.nnWhen setting your goals, you have to pay attention to what your business stands for, what services or products you provide, who your target market is, how you hope to speak to that market, what solutions you want to provide, what milestones you want to set, and at what point to tick those milestones as complete.nnOther than these points, you should be ready to ask for help when your business needs it, hire valuable help, gain important skills, make tough decisions, and put in the work that'll help you achieve these goals.nnEven while doing this, you are not assured of the success of any of these goals. Some goals may make a comeback year after year because they are not attained. When goals make a comeback regularly, it is possible to get frustrated to the point of quitting.nnThat's why these seven tips for creating better business goals comes in handy.nn1. Rationalize the ResultsnBefore setting your goals, it is best to think about the results you want to achieve. Take a longer look into the future and be reasonable with your expectations. In a year, what do you want to have achieved business-wise? nnAre these goals what you truly want? Are they also important enough for you to commit your valuable time and resources to? Are they worth investing in?nnWhen you think of the results you want to achieve, you should have absolute confidence in the path you are about to set yourself upon.nn2. SMART Goals Are the KeynWhen creating better goals, you need to apply the SMART principles, which I'm sure you are familiar with. Your goals should be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time bound. nnSome people think their goals have to be ‘realistic.' Realistic is somewhat relative. I believe that setting a goal that may seem a bit out of reach or a challenge works to motivate most people even more. If you don't achieve this stretch goal, you will feel better because you will have achieved more than you would have originally set as a realistic goal. nnWhen your goals meet these principles, you have chalked off the greatest challenges that affect goal setting. Here, you can begin to outline the best business practices that'll make these goals a reality.nn3. Write Out Your GoalsnWhen creating better goals, it is important to write them all out. If you think they can and should be achieved in the time frame chosen, writing them out helps you put them into perspective.nnWhen you write out your goals, you can structure and amend them appropriately to make them better. Because they are laid out, you can see your goals in the biggest picture, see their challenges, shortcomings, and blind spots, which will help you restructure them to avoid failure and overwhelm from the onset.nnWriting your goals out also helps you focus on them daily. This is the best way to motivate yourself towards achieving them.nn4. Create an Action PlannPlanning without execution is a wasteful and time-consuming activity. To create better goals, you need an exact plan covering how these business goals will be achieved. nnThis plan can cover daily activities, weekly targets, client feedback, reviews, training, the marketing budget, marketing style, your target audience, success parameters, and many more.nnWhen you create an action plan, break it into small, bite-sized milestones to make it easier for you to achieve them. Creating an action plan for your goals creates a step-by-step guideline for ySupport the show
The year 2020 sparked massive change in education as a result of the pandemic, equal parts highlighting innovative ways of teaching kids as well as the ways in which education has fallen short. Prior to this year, the way in which students in the U.S. are educated has remained steady over the past century. However, educators are now taking another look at what can be done to improve.rnrnAmong the many, necessary changes was the need to reach and stay connected with students. Glaring issues were immediately apparent once districts went virtual: in disenfranchised areas, enrollment immediately dropped. Student learning was impacted, with many missing an entire grade or more worth of learning. Lack of access to a computer or internet connection was a major culprit, as well as a lack of means for schools themselves to implement ways to stay connected with their students. Do you think big for your business? Do you look at where your business stands today and think, “this is good enough” or “what if I try something new and it upsets the successes I've attained?” Do you give yourself enough credit to allow yourself to dream big? nnRemember, not every big dream has to come to fruition of a “mission accomplished.” But, every big dream may have a kernel of an action step that will help you think outside the proverbial box and could potentially spark a new idea to do something you're currently doing better, faster, or at a higher level of income producing effect? nnHow Can Big Thinking Grow Your Business? nnTake a moment and ask yourself: What is your dream for your business? Do you want to be the next Amazon or Uber? Do you want to be the biggest XYZ firm in your city or part of the country? Are you looking to take your business nationwide or worldwide? nnDo you even allow yourself to have those big dreams? Many business owners, when asked, “What is the big dream for your business this year” will say: n1.tI'd like to bring in an additional $1,000 a month.n2.tI'd like to grow by 10% in clients and income.n3.tI'd like to outsource some of my tasks.n4.tI'll be happy to maintain the status quo.n5.tI hadn't even thought of a big dream… I'm just trying to maintain my current level.nnThis is what I call “expectation” thinking. You expect to stay where you are and that thinking leads to your getting exactly what you expected. What if you allowed yourself the audacity to say, “I'd like to grow my income by $5,000 a month” or “I want to exceed last year's sales by 50%”.nnWhat's stopping you? nnIs it because you're afraid to think big? What do you think would have happened if Henry Ford hadn't thought big? Would we have had automobiles? Every successful business started out as a small idea that was pushed to higher levels by an entrepreneur who thought big. nnBig, audacious goals don't have to become setbacks if you didn't achieve a 50% higher sales revenue. If you shot for 50% and achieved 30% isn't that a big win? It's certainly a bigger win than a 10% increase. Although if you'd considered a 10% increase you would likely have met that, but would it feel as good as aiming for 50% and attaining 30%? Probably not! nnHow can you become a big thinker in your business? nn1.tAsk bigger questions. When you think big, you aim higher. When you think big you push yourself out of your comfort zone and take a chance. It's exhilarating to take that leap. Ask yourself, “What would life and my business look like if I grew the business by 40, 50 or even 60% this year?” There is no harm in asking those bigger questions. In fact, the answer to “what would it look like” may be the motivating factor in your pursuing that big goal. nn2.tNetwork with like-minded big thinkers. If you surround yourself with entrepreneurs who are always asking, “what if” you may pick up their energy and start asking your own business “what ifs.” If you surround yourself with people who are happy to go with the path their business is on and not take a detour, you will likely be pulled down that complacent path. Involve yourself with big thinkers and you will feel more comfortable announcing your big goal! Find a mastermind group of big thinkers to help you, might be an option.nn3.tFind out where other big thinkers got their start. Did mega-companies like Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, or Uber start out as successes? What is the backstory – the origin story for those businesses? When you know the humble beginnings of mega companies, you may find the inspiration to think bigger yourself. If those company owners hadn't been big thinkers and pSupport the show

As an actual, noteworthy, and reliable point in the night sky, it's a significant symbol for guidance and achievement. nnConsider these examples. For centuries, ships relied on celestial navigation, guided by the North Star. In addition, the North Star offered hope and freedom for the enslaved during abolition. While you may not be crossing literal seas or lands, the idea of finding the North Star—your North Star—can highlight the value of goal setting. nnHaving a goal, no matter the size, is crucial for reaching success in any venture. Imagine attending a meeting or announcing a new policy without any idea of your end goal. Not only would that be confusing, but it would also slow down productivity—and possibly hurt the collective morale and trust of your team members. nnInstead, setting your sights on a goal, or North Star, offers you and your team a clear vision. Once you understand the significance of goal setting, you'll be able to set realistic and ambitious goals with ease. Let's explore four insights to shine light on the value of goals—and lay a clear path toward your North Star of success.nnInsight #1: Start with Clarity in MindnFirst, clarity for your goals is vital. If you don't know where your business is going, it's impossible to achieve real progress. And without a clear roadmap and explanation, a goal could appear unnecessary or out of place to your employees. nnFor example, you wouldn't choose a random number of sales as your goal without taking the time to research what makes the most sense for your firm's success. Nor would you ask your employees to waste time in unnecessary meetings or to duplicate work processes. If you're setting up a product launch, though, you'd ensure your item sells well by clarifying how to get those sales. Start your goal-setting process by clarifying the steps needed to get where you're going.nnInsight #2: Determine Direction and DetailsnNext, having a sense of direction when goal setting is crucial. Imagine a child's birthday party with a piñata: blindfolded youngsters swing wildly in hopes of breaking open all the candy. While this is fun for a celebration, it's not the way to set goals! nnMaking sure you're heading in the right direction with goal setting is key—instead of swinging wildly in hopes of getting it right. Knowing the what, why, and how of a goal points you in the right direction—and your sense of direction increases as you focus on the specifics. So, rather than setting vague goals that generalize your vision, you'll want to aim for specific figures, dates, and other details. nnInsight #3: Build in a Margin for ErrornThird, you need a margin for error. If you're a free thinker, having clear, specific goals laid out may feel like painting yourself into a corner. But look at it this way: no matter the goal, you'll likely run into some obstacles you weren't expecting. As a business owner, you're navigating economic, cultural, personal, and even perhaps political landscapes that could impact your business in ways you couldn't anticipate. nnThis is why leaving a margin of error is so critical. When done expertly, goal setting leaves room for the unexpected. Instead of feeling blocked in, try to see that wiggle room as a pressure valve, similar to a “rainy day” fund. Allowing a margin for error means there's room for exploration and spontaneity.nnInsight #4: Increase Your MotivationnFinally, motivation matters! Mindtools describes the power of setting goals as having “long-term vision and short-term motivation”. While this is the case for many goals, it's worth aspiring toward goals that build your motivation—from start to finish. nnAchieving your goals doesn't neceSupport the show
[[:encoded, "Today we are talking about 6 Ideas for Creating New Opportunities by Getting Rid of Limiting Beliefs.nnAccording to the laws of physics and aerodynamics, a bumble bee can't fly. So…try telling a bumble bee that!nnIsn't it wonderful that bumble bees don't possess human traits? Because if they did, in all likelihood, we would live in a world devoid of flowers and honeycomb and the simple delights of bumble bees productively going about their business in our garden.nnWhy? Because we human beings have a knack for getting caught up in limiting self beliefs, so it follows that the bulk of us would simply accept the word of the scientific community and not fly because we've been told we can't! nnAnd like the imaginary void that would be created without the ingenuity of bumble bees, we create huge voids in our life by accepting self-limiting beliefs.nnOur beliefs about ourselves, those around us and the world at large affect who we are and how we behave. Beliefs are merely thoughts, that with a little encouragement and repetition from our over-active minds, transform into facts. Or so we are led to believe. nnOnce we have formed a self-limiting belief, we continue to pursue evidence to prove that our belief is real. These beliefs are backed up by our self-talk, providing further evidence to back up our negative thoughts.nnHow many times have you caught yourself saying:nn•tI knew I'd be no good at this.n•tThis always happens to me – I'm hopeless.n•tI'm always the unlucky one.n•tI'll never be any good at anything. n•tI can't ask for referrals.n•tI'm not built for following a calendar.n•tI can't seem to stop letting things distract me.n•tI have to spend too much time on lower priorities because they need to get done.nnLimiting beliefs are self-perpetuating; the more we believe something to be so, the more our actions reflect that belief, and the more the resultant failure to achieve what we originally set out to do reinforces the initial limiting belief.nnSo, how do we break the vicious cycle of self-limiting beliefs and create more positive outcomes?nn6 Step Plan to Break the Cycle of Limiting BeliefsnnThe first step in breaking the cycle of self-limiting beliefs is recognizing that the belief exists.nnThis can often be difficult because many of our limiting beliefs stem from early childhood experiences, or are so deeply ingrained into our psyche that we aren't consciously aware of them.nnFor example, you may have been told over and over as a child that you'd “never amount to anything” because you didn't get your homework in on time.nnOver the ensuing years, you've lived a mediocre life, settling for whatever life has thrown at you because you don't believe you are capable of anything better.nnSo, let's look at a series of exercises that will disprove your long-held belief and create a whole new world of opportunities.nn1.tWrite down your self-limiting belief. Writing is an integral part of the process because it shifts your focus from the maze of random thoughts associated with the right side of the brain to the more analytical, logical left hemisphere.nn2.tUsing the above example, the self-limiting belief might be: “I will never amount to anything.”nn3.tDescribe the self-talk that is associated with the belief: “I am useless.” “I am a waste of space.” “I don't deserve to be successful.”nn4.tRecord all the limitations your belief creates: “I am unfulfilled.” “I get no enjoyment from life.” “I am frustrated by my inability to get ahead.”nn5.tWrite down the new positive self-talk that opposes the self-limiting belief: “I am capable of great things.” “I can be successful.” “I am a good person.”nn6.tImagine yourself with the new positive belief and describe your feelings when you think about it: “I feel happy and content with my life.” “I feel posiSupport the show

It was the legendary civil rights leader and human rights advocate John Lewis who famously said in his autobiography Walking with the Wind: A Memoir of the Movement, "I believe in freedom of speech, but I also believe that we have an obligation to condemn speech that is racist, bigoted, anti-Semitic, or hateful."rnrnThis year, the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage and The City Club of Cleveland raised the question of how freedom of speech has not only amplified voices of change, but voices spreading misinformation, untruths and hate as well, in their respective annual essay contests.rnrnIn their 13th Annual Stop the Hate(R) Youth Speak Out & Youth Sing Out Contest, the Maltz Museum specifically raised the question of how students have chosen to be agents of positive change when experiencing acts of injustice, racism, bigotry, or discrimination.rnrnIn the 2021 Free Speech Essay Contest, the City Club asked students what they would do in order to ensure the misinformation, extremism, and violence often spread on social media doesn't threaten the balance of free speech and democracy.rnrnJoin us as the contest winners share both their experiences with hate speech and their views on free speech in the 21st century.
The lack of public comment at Cleveland City Council meetings has been a source of resident anger and frustration for decades. Except for a brief time in the 1920s and 1930s when the city was under a city manager form of government without an elected mayor, Cleveland City Council has not routinely held a space for public comment in its regular meetings. This is in stark contrast to other Ohio cities like Columbus, Akron and Youngstown, all of which allow residents to provide live public comment at their city council meetings. Cuyahoga County Council also permits public comment.rnrnClevelanders for Public Comment is a growing grassroots coalition comprised of dozens of organizations, elected leaders, candidates for office and residents of all 17 wards. They have conducted research, drafted an ordinance, and are urging City Council to act quickly in implementing a public comment period in 2021.rnrnThis forum will consist of a moderated conversation featuring Jessica Trivisonno, author of the proposed ordinance, and two City Council members who are in support of its adoption. Following the conversation, there will be 30 minutes of a simulated public comment session.rnrnAnyone interested in participating will have up to three minutes to make a comments about any matter that concerns the legislative, administrative, or public affairs of the city. Commenters are also encouraged to make comments on how to best invest the $541 million in stimulus funds slated to come to Cleveland from the American Rescue Plan. Individuals can sign up to make a comment by completing the Mock Public Comment Form at cle4publiccomment.com or by e-mailing cle4publiccomment@gmail.com.

As the nation begins to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, we're learning that the availability of child care, decisions regarding when to safely re-open schools, and the broader workforce are inextricably connected.rnrnWhile child care professionals were initially lauded as essential employees at the start of the pandemic, their prioritization declined as time passed. Statewide lockdowns, the closing of schools and in-person learning, and the dramatic increase in the number of parents working from home or not working at all resulted in the shuttering of many child care centers, some permanently. It is estimated that up to 40 percent of child care centers will never reopen after the pandemic subsides.rnrnThis situation has and will continue to disproportionately affect women. With schools closed and limited options for safe and affordable child care available, women have dropped out of the workforce. According to the National Women's Law Center, women have accounted for 55 percent of the net 9.8 million jobs lost since February 2020. The lack of high-quality, affordable early care and education has been a barrier to women's employment and advancement for decades. Now, if current trends are left unaddressed, we risk exacerbating existing inequalities and reversing decades of progress toward the creation of an inclusive economy for women and people of color.rnrnWe're at a critical point in our state - and our nation's - history. The decisions made in the near term will impact child care providers, working women, businesses that employ parents, and our children, the future of Ohio's workforce. Join us as two local leaders discuss efforts underway in Northeast Ohio to address the child care crisis.
