This episode we will discuss various embassies to and from Yamato during the reign of Takara Hime, with a particular focus on the embassy of 659, which occured at a particularly eventful time and happened to be extremely well-recorded fro the period by Iki no Hakatoko, who was apparently on the mission to the Tang court itself. For more, check out our blog post at: https://sengokudaimyo.com/podcast/episode-123 Rough Transcript Welcome to Sengoku Daimyo's Chronicles of Japan. My name is Joshua, and this is episode 123: Embassy Interrupted. Iki no Hakatoko sat in his room, gazing out at the city. It was truly an amazing place, filled with all kinds of people from around the world. And yet, still, after 9 months of confinement, the place felt small. Sure, there he hadwere visits from ranking nobles and dignitaries, but even the most lenient of house arrests was still house arrest. But that didn't mean that he had nothing to do. There were books and more that he had access to—many that had not yet made it to the archipelago, and some of which he no doubt hoped he could bring back with him. And of course, there was paper, brush, and ink. And then there were the experiences he and others had acquired on this mission to the Great Tang. From the very beginning the missionit washad been plagued with disaster when they lost half of their ships and company mission to rogue winds on the open seas. Now they were trapped because the Emperor himself wouldn't let them return home. They had experienced and seen so much, and that provided ample material for one to catalogue. As the seasons changed, and rumors arrived that perhaps his situation would also something would change soon, Iki no Hakatoko spread out the paper on the desk in front of him, dipped his brush in the ink, and began to write. He wrote down notes about his experiences, and what had befallen him and the others. He had no idea who It is unclear whom he thought might read it, and if he was intending this to be an official or personal record, but he wrote it down anyway. Hakatoko He couldn't have known then that his words would eventually be captured in a much larger work, chronicling the entire history of Yamato from its very creation, nor that his would be one of the oldest such personal accounts records to be handed down. His Itwords wwould only survive in fragments—or perhaps his writing was simply that terse—but his words they would be preserved, in a format that was still being read over a thousand years later. Last episode we finished up the story of Xuanzang and his Journey to the West—which is to say the Western Regions -- , and thence on to India, or Tianzhu, where he walked in the footsteps of the historical Buddha, studied the scriptures at the feet of venerable teachers, such as Silabadhra at the Great Monastery of Nalanda, and eventually wound up bringingbrought back hundreds of manuscripts to Chang'an to , which he and others be translated and disseminated, impacting Buddhist thought across East Asia. HisXuanzang's travels lasted from around 629 to 645, and he was still teaching in Chang'an in the 650s when various student-monks from Yamato arrived to study and learn from him, eventually bringing back his teachings to the archipelago as part of the Faxiang, or Hossou, school of Buddhism. Before that we talked about the visitors from “Tukhara” and “Sha'e” recorded in the Chronicles. As we noted, these peopley were morest likely from the Ryukyuan islands, and the names may have been conflated with distant lands overseas – but regardless, . Whether or not it was a mistake, this it does seem to indicated that Yamato had at least an inkling of the wider world, introduced through the continental literature that they had been importing, if not the direct interactions with individuals from the Korean peninsula and the Tang court. This episode, we're going to talk about some of the relations between Yamato and the continent, including the various embassies sent back and forth, as well as one especially detailed embassy from Yamato to the Tang Court that found itself in a bit of a pickle. After all, what did you do, back in those days, when you were and ambassador, and your country suddenly went to war? We'll talk about that and what happened. To reorient ourselves in time, we're in the reign of Takara Hime, called aka Kyogoku Tennou during her first reign, who had reascended to the throne in 655, following the death of her brother, Prince Karu. The Chroniclers would dub her Saimei Tennou in her second run on the throne. From the very beginning of her second reign, Takara Hime was entertaining foreign envoys. In 654, the Three Han of the Korean Peninsula—Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla—all sent ambassadors to express their condolence on the death of her brother, and presumably to witness her ascension. And in the 8th month of her reign, Kawabe no Maro no Omi, along with others, returned from Chang'an. He Kawabe no Maro no Omi had been the Chief Ambassador to the Tang on an embassy sent , traveling there in the 2nd month of the previous year. Originally he had been He was under the command of the controlling envoy, Takamuku no Obito no Kuromaro, but Kuromaro who unfortunately died in Chang'an and so Kawabe no Mari no Omi took over his role. That same year, 655, we know that there were about 100 persons recorded in Yamato from Baekje, along with envoys of Goguryeo and Silla. These are likely the same ones we mentioned back in episode 117 when 150 Baekje envoys were present at court along with multiple members of the Emishi. Silla, for their part, had sent to Yamato a special hostage , whom we know as something like “Mimu”, along with skilled workmen. Unfortunately, we are told that Mimu fell ill and died. The Chronicles are pretty sparse on what this meant, but I can't imagine it was great. After all, the whole idea of sending a hostage to another nation was as a pledge of good behavior – the idea being that the hostage was the idea that they werewas valuable enough that the sending nation wouldn't do anything too rash. The flip side of that is if the hostage died, Of course, if they perished, the hosting country lost any leverage—and presumably the sending nation would be none too pleased. That said, people getting sick and passing away was hardly a hostile action, and likely just considered an unfortunate situation. The following year, in 656, we see that Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla again all sent ambassadords were all sent to offer “tribute”. The Chronicles mention that dark purple curtains were drawn around the palace site to entertain the ambassadors—likely referring to the new palace site at Asuka no Wokamoto, which probably was not yet fully built out, yet. We are given the name of the Goguryeo ambassador, Talsa, and associate ambassador, Ilchi, in the 8th month, Talsa and Ilichi, with 81 total members in the Goguryeo retinueof the embassy. In seeming response, Yamato sent an embassy was sent to Goguryeo with the likes of Kashiwade no Omi no Hatsumi as the Chief Ambassador and Sakahibe no Muraji no Iwasuki as the Associate Ambassador. Other names mentioned include We also see the likes of Inugami no Shiromaro, Kawachi no Fumi no Obito—no personal name is given—and Ohokura no Maro. We also see thea note in the Chronicles that Yamato ambassadors to the quote-unquote “Western Sea”—which seems to refer to the Tang court, but could possibly refer to anything from the Korean Peninsula west—returned in that same year. The two are named as Saheki no Muraji no Takunaha and Oyamashita no Naniha no Kishi no Kunikatsu. These are both families that were clearly involved in cross-strait relations , based on how they are frequently referenced in the Chronicles as being associated with various overseas missions. but However, we don't seem to have clear evidence of them when these particular individualsy leavingft on this mission. “Kunikatsu” mightay refer to an earlier ambassador to Baekje, but the names are different, so that is largely just speculation. In any case, Uupon their return, they are said to have brought with them a parrot. This wasn't the first parrot the court had seen—that feathery traveler had arrived in 647, or at least that is the first parrotinstance we have in the written record -- . Aand that one came from Silla as part of that embassy's gifts. Continuing on, in 657, The following year there was another group of ambassadors returned coming from the “Western Seas”, in this case coming back from—or through—Baekje. Thisese wasere Adzumi no Muraji no Tsuratari and Tsu no Omi no Kutsuma. The presents they brought back were, of all things: one camel and two donkeys. And can you imagine bringing a camel back across the sea at this point? Even if they were using the larger ships based on continental designs, it still must have been something else to put up with a camel and donkeys onboard, animals that are not exactly known for their easy-going and compliant nature. Speaking of boats, we should probably touch on what we *think* they were usinghas been going on here. I say *think* because we only get glimpses of the various boats being used in the archipelago, whether from mentions in or around Yamato, archaeology, or artistic depictions, many of which came from later periods., and wSo while it is generally assumed that they the Yamato were using Tang style vessels by the 8th and 9th century, there does not appear to be clear evidence of exactly what kind of boats were being used during the early earlier periods of contact. A quick note on boat technology and navigation: while travel between the Japanese archipelago and the Korean Peninsula, and up the Yellow Sea, wasn't safe, it would have been possible with the vessels of the time. Japan sits on the continental shelf, meaning that to the east where the shelf gives way to the Pacific Ocean with the Phillippine Sea to the south, the waters are much, much deeper than they are to the west. In deep waters, waves are not necessarily affected by the ocean floor, meaning they can build up much more energy and require different kinds of technology to sail. In shallower areas, such as the Sea of Japan, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea or the Korean Straits to the west of the archipelago, there's more drag that dampens out the wave effect – it's not that these areas are uniformly shallow and calm, but they are calmer and easier to navigate in general. Our oldest example of boats in the archipelago of any kind are dugout canoes, . These are logs that are hollowed out and shaped. , and tThese appear to be what Jomon era populations used to cross to the archipelago and travel between the various islands. Though they may be considered primitive, without many of the later innovations that would increase stability and seaworthiness—something I'll touch on more a bit later—, they were clearly effective enough to populate the islands of the Ryukyuan chain and even get people and livestock, in the form of pigs, down to the Hachijo islands south of modern Tokyo. So they weren't ineffective. Deep waters mean that the waves are not necessarily affected by the ocean floor. Once it hits shallower water, there is more drag that affects larger waves. This means that there can be more energy in these ocean waves. That usually means that shallower areas tend to be more calm and easier to navigate—though there are other things that can affect that as well. We probably should note, however, that Japan sits on the edge of the continental shelf. To the west, the seas are deep, but not nearly as deep as they are to the east, where continental shelf gives way to the Pacific ocean, with the Philippine Sea to the south. These are much deeper waters than those of the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, or the Korean Straits. The Sea of Japan does have some depth to it, but even then it doesn't compare in both size and depth. All this to say that travel between the Japanese archipelago and the Korean Peninsula, and up the Yellow Sea, were all things that were likely much easier to navigate with the vessels available at the time, but that doesn't mean that it was safe. Later, we see a different type of vessel appear: . This is a built vessel, made of multiple hewn pieces of wood. The examples that we see show a rather square front and back that rise up, sometimes dramatically, . There are with various protrusions on either side. We see examples of this shape , and we've seen examples in haniwa from about the 6th century, and we have some corresponding wooden pieces found around the Korean peninsula that pretty closely match the haniwa boat shapesuggest similar boats were in use there as well, . Nnot surprising given the cultural connections. These boats do not show examples of sails, and were likely crewed by rowers. Descriptions of some suggest that they might be adorned with branches, jewels, mirrors, and other such things for formal occasions to identify some boats as special -- , and we even have one record of the rowers in ceremonial garb with deer antlers. But none of this suggests more than one basic boat typevery different types of boats. In the areas of the Yellow and Yangzi rivers, area of modern China, particularly in the modern PRC, the boats we see are a little different. They tend to be flat bottomed boats, possible evolved from which appear to have been designed from rafts or similar . These vessels would have evolved out of those used to transport goods and people up and down the Yellow and Yangzi rivers and their tributaries. These boats y had developed sails, but still the boats wwere n'ot necessarily the most stable on the open ocean. Larger boats could perhaps make their way through some of the waves, and were no doubt used throughout the Yellow Sea and similar regions. However, for going farther abroad, we are told thatcourt chronicles note that there were other boats that were preferred: . These are sometimes called the Kun'lun-po, or Boats of the Kunlun, or the Boats of the Dark-skinned people. A quick dive here into how this name came to be. Originally, “Kunlun” appears to refer to a mythical mountain range, the Kunlun-shan, which may have originated in the Shan-hai-jing, the Classic of Mountains and Seas, and so may not have referred to anything specific terrestrial mountain range, ally. Italthough the term would later attach be used to describe to the mountain chain that forms the northern edge of the Tibetan plateau, on the southern edge of the Tarim Basin. However, at some point, it seems that “Kunlun” came to refer to people -- . Sspecifically, it came to refer to people of dark complexion, with curly hair. There are Tang era depictions of such people, but their origin is not exactly known: it might . It is thought that it may have have equally referred to dark-skinned individuals of African descent, or possibly referring to some of the dark-skinned people who lived in the southern seas—people like the Andamanese living on the islands west of modern Thailand or some of the people of the Malay peninsula, for example. It is these latter groups that likely were the origin, then, of the “Kun'lun-po”, referring to the ships of the south, such as those of Malay and AsutronesianAustronesian origin. We know that from the period of at least the Northern and Southern Dynasties, and even into the early Tang, these foreign ships often , which were often plyingied the waters from trade port to trade port, and were the preferred sailing vessels for voyages to the south, where the waters could be more treacherous. Indeed, the Malay language eventually gives us the term of their vessels as “Djong”, a term that eventually made its way into Portuguese as “Junco” and thus into English as “junk”, though this terms has since been rather broadly applied to different “Asian” style sailing vessels. So that leaves us with three ship types that the Yamato court could have been using to send these embassies back and forth to the continent: . Were they still using their own style of native boat as seen on haniwa,, or were they adopting continental boats to their needs? If so, were they using the flat-bottomed boats of the Tang dynasty, or the more seaworthy vessels of the foreign merchants?. Which were they using? The general thinking is that IMost depictions I have seen of the kentoushi, the Japanese embassies to the Tang court, depict them as t is generally thought that they were probably using the more continental-style flat-bottomed, riverine vessels. After all, they were copying so much of what the Sui and Tang courts were doing, why would they not consider these ships to likewise be superior to their own? At least for diplomatic purposes. I suspect that local fishermen did their own were keeping their own counsel as far as ships are concernedthing, and I also have to wonder about what got used they were using from a military standpoint for military purposes. Certainly we see the Tang style boats used in later centuries, suggesting that these had been adopted at some earlier point, possibly by the 650s or earlier. Whatever they used, and while long-distance sailing vessels could Sailing vessels could be larger than short-distance riverine craft, this was not a luxury cruise. , but conditions on board were not necessarily a luxury cruise. From later accounts we know that they would really pack people into these shipspeople could be packed in. It should be noted that individual beds and bedrooms were a luxury in much of the world, and many people probably had little more than a mat to sleep on. Furthermore, people could be packed in tight. Think of the size of some of these embassies, which are said to be 80 to 150 people in size. A long, overseas journey likely meant getting quite cozy with your neighbors on the voyage. So how much more so with a camel and two donkeys on board a vessel that was likely never meant to carry them? Not exactly the most pleasant experience, I imagine – and this is not really any different than European sailing vessels during the later age of exploration.. So, from the records for just the first few years of Takara-hime's second reign, we see that there are lots of people going back and forth, and we have a sense of how they might be getting to and from the continent and peninsula. Let's dive into Next, we are going to talk about one of the most heavily documented embassies to the Tang court, which set out in the 7th month of the year 659. Not only do we get a pretty detailed account of this embassy, but we even know who wrote the account: as in our imagined intro, , as this is one of the accounts by the famous Iki no Muraji no Hakatoko, transcribed by Aston as “Yuki” no Muraji. Iki no Hakatoko's name first appears in an entry for 654, where he is quoted as giving information about the status of some of the previous embassies to the Tang court. Thereafter, various entries are labeled as “Iki no Muraji no Hakatoko says:”, which This would seem to indicate that these particular entries came are taken directly from another work written by Iki no Hakatoko and referred to as the “Iki Hakatoko Sho”. Based on the quoted fragments found in the Nihon Shoki, itthis appears to be one of ourthis oldest Japanese travelogues. It , and spends considerable time on the mission of 659, of which it would appear that Iki no Hakatoko was himself a member, though not a ranking one. Later, Iki no Hakatoko would find himself mentioned in the Nihon Shoki directly, and he would even be an ambassador, himself. The embassy of 659 itself, as we shall see, was rather momentous. Although it started easily enough, the embassy would be caught up in some of the most impactful events that would take place between the Tang, Yamato, and the states of the Korean peninsula. This embassy was formally under the command of Sakahibe no Muraji no Iwashiki and Tsumori no Muraji no Kiza. It's possible In the first instance it is not clear to me if this isthat he is the same person as the previously mentioned associate envoy, Sakahibe no Iwasuki—but the kanji are different enough, and there is another Sakahibe no Kusuri who shows up between the two in the record. However, they are both listed as envoys during the reign of Takara Hime, aka Saimei Tennou, and as we've abundantly seen, and it wouldn't be the first time that scribal error crept in. has taken place, especially if the Chroniclers were pulling from different sources. The ambassadors took a retinue with them, including members of the northern Emishi, whom they were bringing along with them to show to the Tang court. TheThey also embassy ttook two ships—perhaps because of the size of the retinue, but I suspect that this was also because if anything happened to the one, you still had the other. A kind of backup plan due to the likelihood something went wrong. And wouldn't you know it, something did go wrong. You see, things started out fine, departing Mitsu Bay, in Naniwa, on the 3rd day of the 7th month. They sailed through the Seto Inland Sea and stopped at Tsukushi, likely for one last resupply and to check in with the Dazai, located near modern Fukuoka, who would have been in charge of overseeing ships coming and going to the archipelago. They departed from Ohotsu bay in Tsukushi on the 11th day of the 8th month. A quick note: Sspeedboats these were not. Today, one can cross from Fukuoka to Busan, on the southeast corner of the Korean peninsula, in less than a day. The envoys, however, were taking their time. They may have even stopped at the islands of Iki and Tsushima on their way. By the 13th day of the 9th month—over a month from leaving Kyushu behind -- , the ships finally came to an island along the southern border of Yamato's ally, Baekje. Hakatoko does not recall the name of the island, but o On the following morning, around 4 AM, so just before sunrise, the two ships put out to sea together to cross the ocean, heading south, towards the mouth of the Yangzi river. Unfortunately, the following day, the ship Iwashiki was on met with a contrary wind, and was driven away from the other ship – with nothing known of its fate until some time afterwards. Meanwhile, the other ship, under the command of Tsumori no Muraji no Kiza, continued on and by midnight on the 16th day, it arrived at Mt. Xuan near Kuaiji Commandary in the Yue district, in modern Zhejiang. Suddenly a violent northeast wind blew up, and p. Tthey were saileding another 7 days before they finally arrived at Yuyao. Today, this is part of the city of Ningbo, at the mouth of the Qiantang river, south of Shanghai and considered a part of the Yangzi Delta Region. This area has been inhabited since at least 6300 years ago, and it has long been a trade port, especially with the creation of the Grand Canal connecting between the Yangzi and the Yellow River, which would have allowed transshipment of goods to both regions. The now half-size Yamato contingenty left their ship at Yuyao and disembarked, and made their way to Yuezhou, the capital of the Kuaiji Commandary. This took them a bit of time—a little over a month. Presumably this was because of paperwork and logistics: they probably because they had to send word ahead, and I suspect they had to inventory everything they brought and negotiate carts and transportationfigure out transportation., since Tthey didn't exactly have bags of holding to stuff it all in, so they probably needed to negotiate carts and transportation. The finally made it to Yuezhou on the first day of the 11th intercalary month. An “intercalary” month refers to an extra month in a year. It was determined by various calculations and was added to keep the lunar and solar years in relative synch. From Yuezhou, things went a bit more quickly, as they were placed on post-horses up to the Eastern Capital, or Luoyang, where the Emperor Tang Gaozong was in residence. The Tang kept a capital at Luoyang and another to the west, in Chang'an. The trip to Luoyang was long—over 1,000 kilometers, or 1 megameter, as it were. The trip first took them through the Southern Capital, meaning the area of modern Nanjing, which they entered on the 15th day of the month. They then continued onwards, reaching Luoyang on the 29th day of the 11th month. The following day, on the 30th day of the 11th intercalary month of the year 659, the Yamato envoys were granted an audience with Emperor Tang Gaozong. As was proper, he inquired about the health of their sovereign, Takara Hime, and the envoys reported that she was doing well. He asked other questions about how the officials were doing and whether there was peace in Yamato. The envoys all responded affirmatively, assuring him that Yamato was at peace. Tang Gaozong also asked about the Emishi they had brought with them. We mentioned this event previously, back in Episode XXX117 , how the Emishi had been shown to the Tang Emperor, and how they had described them for him. This is actually one of the earliest accounts that we have describing the Emishi from the Yamato point of view, rather than just naming them—presumably because everyone in Yamato already knew who they were. From a diplomatic perspective, of course, this was no doubt Yamato demonstrating how they were, in many ways, an Empire, similar to the Tang, with their own subordinate ethnicities and “barbarians”. After answering all of the emperor's questions, the audience was concluded. The following day, however, was something of its own. This was the first day of the regular 11th lunar month, and it also was the celebration of the Winter Solstice—so though it was the 11th month, it may have been about 22 December according to our modern western calendars. The envoys once again met with the emperor, and they were treated as distinguished guests—at least according to their own records of it. Unfortunately, during the festivities, it seems that a fire broke out, creating some confusion, and . Tthe matters of the diplomatic mission were put on hold while all of that went on. We don't know exactly what happened in the ensuing month. Presumably the envoys took in the sites of the city, may have visited various monasteries, and likely got to know the movers and shakers in the court, who likely would have wined and dined them, inviting them to various gatherings, as since they brought their own exotic culture and experiences to the Tang court. Unfortunately, things apparently turned sour. First off, it seems clear that the members of this embassyy weren't the only Japanese in the court. There may have been various merchants, of course, but and we definitely know that there were students who had come on other missions and were still there likely still studying, such as those who had been learning from studying with Master Xuanzang, whose journeys we mentioned in the last several episodes. But Wwe are given a very specific name of a troublemaker, however: Kawachi no Aya no Ohomaro, and we are told that he was aa servant of Han Chihung, who . Han Chihung, himself, is thought to have possiblymay have been of mixed ethnicity—both Japanese and ethnic Han, and may . Hhe may have traveled to the Tang court on or around 653. , based on some of the records, but it isn't entirely clear. For whatever reason, on the 3rd day of the 12th month of the year 659, Kawachi no Aya no Ohomaro slandered the envoys, and although . Wwe don't know exactly what he said, but the Tang court caught wind of the accusations and found the envoys guilty. They were condemned to banishment, until the author of our tale, none other than Iki no Hakatoko himself, stepped up, . He made representation to the Emperor, pleading against the slander. , and tThe punishment was remitted, . Sso they were no longer banished. However, they were also then told that they could no't return home. You see, the Tang court was in the middle of some sensitive military operations in the lands east of the sea—in other words they were working with Silla to and invadeing the Kingdom of Baekje. Since Yamato was an ally of Baekje, it would be inconvenient if the envoys were to return home and rally Yamato to Baekje's defense. And so the entire Yamato embassy was moved to the Western Capital, Chang'an, where they were placed under individual house arrest. They no doubt were treated well, but they were not allowed to leave, and . Tthey ended up spending the next year in this state. of house arrest. Unfortunately, we don't have a record of just how they passed their time in Chang'an. They likely studied, and were probably visited by nobles and others. They weren't allowed to leave, but they weren't exactly thrown in jail, either. After all, they were foreign emissaries, and though the Tang might be at war with their ally, there was no formal declaration of war with Yamato, as far as I can make out. And so the embassy just sat there, for about 9 months. Finally, in the 7th month of 660, the records tell us we are told thatthat tThe Tang and Silla forces had been successful: . Baekje was destroyed.. The Tang and Silla forces had been successful. News must have reached Chang'an a month later, as Iki Hakatoko writes that this occurred in the 8th month of the year 660. With the Tang special military operation on the Korean peninsula concluded, they released the envoys and allowed them to return to their own countries. They envoys began their preparations as of the 12th day of the 9th month, no doubt eager to return home, and left were leaving Chang'an a week later, on the 19th day of the 9th month. From there, it took them almost a month to reach Luoyang, arriving on the 16th day of the 10th month, and here they were greeted with more good news, for here it was that they met up once again with those members of their delegation who had been blown off course. As you may remember, the ship carrying Iwashiki was blown off-course on the 15th day of the 9th month in the year 659, shortly after setting out from the Korean peninsula. The two ships had lost contact and Tsumori no Muraji no Kiza and his ship had been the one that had continued on. Iwashiki and those with him, however, found themselves at the mercy of the contrary winds and eventually came ashore at an island in the Southern Sea, which Aston translates as “Erh-kia-wei”. There appears to be at least some suggestion that this was an island in the Ryukyuan chain, possibly the island of Kikai. There, local islanders, none too happy about these foreigners crashing into their beach, destroyed the ship, and presumably attacked the embassy. Several members, including Yamato no Aya no Wosa no Atahe no Arima (yeah, that *is* a mouthful), Sakahibe no Muraji no Inadzumi (perhaps a relative of Iwashiki) and others all stole a local ship and made their way off the island. They eventually made landfall at a Kuazhou, southeast of Lishui City in modern Zhejiang province, where they met with local officials of the Tang government, who then sent them under escort to the capital at Luoyang. Once there, they were probably held in a similar state of house arrest, due to the invasion of Baekje, but they met back up with Kiza and Hakatoko's party. The envoys, now reunited, hung out in Luoyang for a bit longer, and thus . Thus it was on the first day of the 11th month of 660 that they witnessed war captives being brought to the capital. This included 13 royal persons of Baekje, from the King on down to the Crown Prince and various nobles, including the PRimiePrime Minister, as well as 37 other persons of lower rank—50 people all told. TheThese captives y were delivered up to the Tang government and led before the emperor. Of course, with the war concluded, and Baekje no longer a functioning state, while he could have had them executed, Tang Gaozong instead released them, demonstrating a certain amount of magnanimity. The Yamato envoys remained in Luoyang for most of the month. On the 19th, they had another audience with the emperor, who bestowed on them various gifts and presents, and then five days later they departed the Luoyang, and began the trek back to the archipelago in earnest. By the 25th day of the first month of 661, the envoys arrived back at Yuezhou, head of the Kuaiji Commandery. They stayed there for another couple of months, possibly waiting for the right time, as crossing the sea at in the wrong season could be disastrous. They finally departed east from Yuezhou on the first day of the fourth month, coming to . They came to Mt. Cheng-an 6 days later, on the 7th, and set out to sea first thing in the morning on the 8th. They had a southwest wind initially in their favor, but they lost their way in the open ocean, an all too commonall-too-common problem without modern navigational aids. Fortunately, the favorable winds had carried them far enough that only a day later they made landfall on the island of Tamna, aka Jeju island. Jeju island was, at this point, its own independent kingdom, situated off the southern coast of the Korean peninsula. Dr. Alexander Vovin suggested that the name “Tamna” may have been a corruption of a Japonic or proto-Japonic name: Tanimura. The island was apparently quite strange to the Yamato embassy, and they met with various residents natives of Jeju island. They, even convincinged Prince Aphaki and eight other men of the island to come with them to be presented at the Yamato court. The rest of their journey took a little over a month. They finally arrived back in Yamato on the 23rd day of the fifth month of 661. They had been gone for approximately two years, and a lot had changed, especially with the destruction of Baekje. The Yamato court had already learned of what had happened and was in the process of drawing up plans for an expedition back to the Korean peninsula to restore the Baekje kingdom, and pPrince Naka no Oe himself was set to lead the troops. The icing on the cake was: Tthe reception that the envoys received upon their return was rather cold. Apparently they were had been slandered to the Yamato court by another follower of Han Chihung—Yamato no Aya no Atahe no Tarushima—and so they weren't met with any fanfare. We still don't know what it was that Tarsuhima was saying—possibly he had gotten letters from Chihung or Ohomaro and was simply repeating what they had said. Either way, the envoys were sick of it. They had traveled all the way to the Tang capitals, they had been placed under house arrest for a year, and now they had returned. They not only had gifts from the Tang emperor, but they were also bringing the first ever embassy from the Kingdom of Tamna along with them. The slander would not stand. And so they did what anyone would do at the time: They apparently appealed to the Kami. We are told that their anger reached to the Gods of the High Heaven, which is to say the kami of Takamanohara, who killed Tarushima with a thunderbolt. Which I guess was one way to shut him up. From what we can tell, the embassy was eventually considered a success. Iki no Hakatoko's star would rise—and fall—and rise again in the court circles. As I noted, his account of this embassy is really one of the best and most in depth that we have from this time. It lets us see the relative route that the envoys were taking—the Chronicles in particular note that they traveled to the Great Tang of Wu, and, sure enough, they had set out along the southern route to the old Wu capital, rather than trying to cross the Bohai Sea and make landfall by the Shandong peninsula or at the mouth of the Yellow River. From there they traveled through Nanjing—the southern “capital” likely referring, in this instance, to the old Wu capital—and then to Luoyang. Though they stayed there much longer than they had anticipated, they ended up living there through some of the most impactful events that occurred during this point in Northeast Asia. they And that is something we will touch on next episode. This is part 2 of a 2-part series on the Hands-Off CEO podcast, where you'll hear host Mandi Ellefson being interviewed by Ross Mayfield, a copywriter and marketing strategist on her team. In this episode, Mandi and Ross share some of the more vulnerable stories and experiences they haven't shared on the podcast before. They dispel the myth of the "seven-figure lifestyle business" and discuss the truth about what it really takes to become a hands-off CEO, including the impact this shift can have on your financial stability and your overall lifestyle. Key ideas discussed include: Many people start a business with the goal of making a decent salary and having a stress-free life. However, the concept of a lifestyle business can be problematic, as being a business owner can be stressful and demanding. You can become so consumed with running the day-to-day operations of your business that you miss out on opportunities and experiences, and even miss vacations. [1:58] To enjoy greater freedom and a better lifestyle, CEOs must commit to expanding and developing their team. [4:29] The missing component for CEOs of lifestyle businesses who want more freedom is implementing accountability structures. [07:29] Mobilizing a team based on their goals and aspirations is key to freeing up the CEO from hands-on management and allowing for growth at higher levels. [09:12] Build an inspiring vision that people can be a part of. People will only do something if they want to do it, so simply paying them more money will not motivate them in the long run. [12:50] “I think that if you don't have someone that's bought into your vision, don't even consider them,” Mandi advises listeners. “It doesn't matter how good of an applicant they are.Tthey're not bought into what you're doing. They're never going to fight for your vision. They're never going to be part of it. Just keep looking.” [14:39] To attract and retain top talent you need to build a world-class culture that inspires people to work for your company for reasons beyond just money. To do this, you must prioritize employee well-being and satisfaction. [20:33] How John, Barry, and Finn were able to enjoy a happier lifestyle by embracing the hands-off approach. [21:23] “We need to be able to have that ability to be able to step back and have this business to continue, generate income for ourselves, income for everyone on our team, and not have to just completely pause it or shut it down or any of those things when life does happen,” Mandi remarks. [34:30] KEY QUOTE: "The reason why you can generate more growth in the business is because it's not directly tied to your time. That's how you remove yourself as the bottleneck to growth, and it allows you to create that next-level lifestyle that you really want and the reason why you started the business in the first place." - Mandi Ellefson Resources: Mandi Ellefson on LinkedIn | Email | Twitter Ross Mayfield Episode 65 - How Shifting From Freelance To CEO Added $1M Of Growth To This Startup Consultancy with Josh LaMar and Marcelo Chinellato Hands-Off CEO

This is Garrison Hardie with your CrossPolitic Daily NewsBrief for Friday, October 28th, 2022. I’m on my way to Boise to see my mom as we speak, but first, I figured I should get you the news heading into the weekend! https://thepostmillennial.com/facebook-fined-25m-for-breaking-washington-state-election-law?utm_campaign=64487 Facebook fined $25M for breaking Washington state election law Facebook’s parent company Meta was issued a $25 million fine Wednesday for violating Washington state's campaign finance laws. According to court documents, King County Superior Court Judge Douglass North found Meta to be in violation of Washington’s political disclosure law 822 separate times between 2019 and 2021 and issued the maximum possible fine for each instance, which totaled up to $30,000 per violation. Meta was also ordered to "come into full compliance" with the state's election transparency laws within the next 30 days as well as pay the attorney's fees for the case, which Ferguson has requested be tripled for a total of $10.5 million. The final total will be decided by North at a later date. According to The Seattle Times, the state’s election transparency laws, which have been in place since 1972, require ad sellers to "disclose the names and addresses of political buys, the targets of such ads and, the total number of viewers of each ad.” The judge found that Meta had intentionally violated the standards. Washington Democrat Attorney General Bob Ferguson said "that he had "one word for Facebook's conduct in this case – arrogance." He told the Times, "It intentionally disregarded Washington's election transparency laws," Ferguson said. "But that wasn't enough. Facebook argued in court that those laws should be declared unconstitutional. That's breathtaking." Ferguson originally sued Meta, then still known as Facebook, for violation of the 1972 transparency laws in 2018 for $200,000. In response the company said they would stop selling political ads in the state rather than comply with the law. Ferguson filed a second lawsuit against the company in 2020 after a report revealed that the company was still selling political ads which were out of compliance with state law. According to the Times, the company said that the laws "unduly burden political speech" and were "virtually impossible to comply with." In a motion filed in July, Ferguson wrote that Meta had failed to respond to multiple inspection requests regarding political advertisements on its platform in Washington between 2019 and 2021 and after several complaints were filed to the state Public Disclosure Commission, the Executive Director of the agency Peter Lavallee referred the case to Ferguson in September 2021 for potential legal action. This spring, Meta filed a motion asking the court to strike down the regulations for commercial advertisers which was denied by North in September. https://www.dailyfetched.com/lori-lightfoot-demands-5-pay-rise-as-chicago-crime-rates-spiral-out-of-control/ Lori Lightfoot Demands 5% Pay rise as Chicago Crime Rates Spiral Out of Control Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot proposed giving herself a 5 percent annual pay increase despite mounting criticisms of soaring violent crime in her city. Lightfoot currently takes home an annual salary of $209,915, but the Mayor now demands an increase of up to 5 percent each year. The ordinance announced on Wednesday it would give Lightfoot, city clerk, and treasurer access to a pay increase each year. This would mirror the process used by aldermen who are already eligible for the pay rise. “To be clear, the ordinance that was introduced today would put the Mayor, the city treasurer, and the clerk in line with all the other elected officials regarding a cost of living increase,” Mayor Lightfoot said. The pay increase comes as violent crime in Chicago have increased by 37 percent since last year. Shootings in the city are up from the previous weekend when nine murders and 31 victims were reported. There have been a total of 2,313 shooting incidents reported in 2022. Last weekend, a total of 51 people were shot in Chicago, with some 11 victims dying in the 43 separate incidents – nine of the victims being juveniles. In 2022, 49,433 more crimes were reported in Chicago than 35,746 in 2021. Lori Lightfoot vowed to tackle the city’s crime rates after she was sworn into office in May 2019, but up to now, she has failed. The Chicago mayor also made a massive U-turn on her proposal to cut $59million from the Chicago Police Department’s budget amid the defund the police’ protests in the summer of 2020. Despite Lori Lightfoot denouncing the ‘defund the police’ movement, Chicago’s police union has since issued a vote of ‘no confidence in the Mayor. These amendments will expand the 2013 law, which banned the dissemination of "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations" to children, expanding it to include those 18 and older, according to the Associated Press. Lawmakers in the Duma voted unanimously to approve the amendments, but still faces the upper house of Russia’s parliament, the Federation Council, before it can be signed into law by Russian President Vladimir Putin, France 24 reported. New provisions in the amendment set out to ban "gay propaganda" for all Russians, not just minors, in advertisements, the internet, media, literature, and cinema. Also set to be banned is "propaganda of pedophilia." The amendments would also look to ban the "denial of family values," and seeks to stop propaganda that could "cause minors to desire to change their sex." Foreigners found in violation of the law could face expulsion. https://newsbusters.org/blogs/business/joseph-vazquez/2022/10/27/soros-gave-176m-lefty-group-pushing-facebook-tiktok-censor Soros Gave $17.6M to Lefty Group Pushing Facebook, TikTok to Censor So-Called Election Disinfo Another group heavily financed by liberal billionaire George Soros is joining a growing network of organizations he funds calling on Big Tech to do more to censor so-called election “disinformation” before the midterms. Leftist group Global Witness released a co-authored piece of propaganda disguised as an “investigation” with New York University’s Cyber Security for Democracy team (C4D) whining that Facebook and TikTok weren’t censoring enough. The group’s Oct. 21 press release on its report, headlined “Facebook and TikTok fail to block deceptive ads with blatant US midterms disinformation,” claimed its “experiment” was engineered to “determine how well social media platforms are living up to their promises to stop disinformation that can destabilise democratic processes.” Soros’ Open Society Foundations gave Global Witness $17,657,000 between 2016 and 2020 alone. The group has offices in London, Brussels and Washington D.C. The group complained that TikTok “approved 90 percent of ads featuring misleading and false election disinformation” while Facebook allegedly “approved a significant number of similarly inaccurate and false ads.” Global Witness Senior Advisor John Lloyd tried to drum up fear about a supposed threat to “democracy” if Big Tech companies didn’t up the ante on their censorship operations: It is high time they got their houses in order and started properly resourcing the detection and prevention of disinformation, before it’s too late. Our democracy rests on their willingness to act. Multiple media outlets like The New York Times and The Hill gobbled up and regurgitated Global Witness’ talking points without mentioning the group’s financial ties to Soros: The New York Times: “TikTok failed to stop most misleading political ads in a test run by researchers.” The Hill: “TikTok, Facebook failed to remove ads spreading election misinformation: report.” Fortune: “TikTok let through 90% of ads spreading baseless claims around U.S. midterms, new report finds.” Associated Press: “Report: TikTok bad at culling US election misinformation ads.” The Guardian: “‘We risk another crisis’: TikTok in danger of being major vector of election misinformation.” Global Witness, however, praised YouTube for its obsession with censoring election content while still finding room to suggest it doesn’t go far enough in censoring election content in Brazil. Could that be because Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro is an ally of former U.S. President Donald Trump? Bolsonaro is currently in the middle of a highly contested election against leftist and disgraced former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio “Lula” Da Silva. I’ve got requests from my coworkers on this one: Our behind the scenes all-stars here at CrossPolitic Anna Hadfield, and Neil Alcomendras. By the way ladies he’s still single… I’ll go ahead and start with Neil’s request… and that is Anderson Silva will be fighting Jake Paul in the ring this weekend… For those that don’t know, Anderson Silva is one of the more decorated fighters in mixed martial arts. He is a former UFC Middleweight Champion and holds the record for the longest title reign in UFC history at 2,457 days. This started in 2006 and ended in 2013 and included a UFC record 16 consecutive victories in that span. Now a lot of people think Jake Paul is a joke, but my friend Neil, who knows a thing or two about fighting, says Paul is actually a solid boxer, and an athlete… but… the fight may reportedly be in jeopardy… https://www.badlefthook.com/2022/10/27/23426896/paul-vs-silva-arizona-commission-meet-regarding-anderson-eligibility-fight-boxing-news-2022 Jake Paul’s fight with Anderson Silva on Saturday is in at least potential jeopardy, as the Arizona Boxing & MMA Commission will meet this evening about the event, following remarks recently made by Silva that he’d been knocked out twice during training camp. The 47-year-old Silva said in an interview that was released this week — but reportedly actually took place a month ago — that he’d been knocked out twice in sparring leading up to the fight, and the Arizona commission told ESPN’s Marc Raimondi that they will “review additional documentation submitted” by Silva Silva has said he “misspoke” in the interview, noting that English is not his first language, and also that he was joking. But a misspoken joke could threaten what is a major money event for himself, Paul, and Showtime Sports. The most likely outcome, just at a wager, is that the fight will go on unless Silva — or Paul, for that matter — failed a medical examination from the commission. It would seem pretty hard to prove that he wasn’t simply joking or that he didn’t just use the wrong words. But it’s a situation where the commission have to at least review the issue officially, too. If the fight does happen — and we’ll know by tonight if it’s going ahead or not, with the official weigh-in set for tomorrow morning — then the fight is on! Alright, time for the other item. Anna’s family, and little brother’s specifically, are big time Eagle’s fans, and the Philadelphia Eagles are doing incredibly well this year. They’re undefeated at the moment, with a perfect 6-0 record. They also just traded for a talented, and veteran defensive lineman in Robert Quinn. According to The MMQB's Albert Breer, the Bears are picking up $7.1 million of Quinn's remaining salary for this season. In turn, the Eagles will pay Quinn a shade over $700,000 for the duration of the campaign. Quinn, 32, has had a quiet season for the Bears, posting one sack, three quarterback hits and eight tackles in seven games. It's a far cry from his 2021 season when he notched 18.5 sacks. Dating back to 2018, however, Quinn has rotated mediocre sack totals with big seasons: 2018: 6.5 sacks in 16 games 2019: 11.5 sacks in 14 games 2020: Two sacks in 15 games 2021: 18.5 sacks in 16 games Depth on the edge became a major need for the Eagles after Derek Barnett was lost for the season with a torn ACL in September. But folks it gets better… The next four quarterbacks the Eagles are scheduled to face have 12 career wins.T They have 49 touchdowns and 41 interceptions, lifetime passer ratings ranging from 66.7 to 87.0 three wins this year and three career wins over winning teams. If the Steelers, Texans, Commanders and Colts continue with their current starting quarterbacks, the undefeated Eagles over the next four weeks will face rookie Kenny Pickett, who’s thrown two TDs and seven INTs in his first three career starts; Davis Mills, who’s won three of 17 career starts; Taylor Heinicke, who’s played for three fewer NFL teams (five) than career wins (eight); and Sam Ehlinger, a 6th-round pick who’s never thrown an NFL pass. So, yes, the Eagles appear to be wins over Pickett, Mills, Heinicke and Ehlinger away from a 10-0 record. This coming off a win over Cooper Rush in his sixth career start. Those quarterbacks will be facing a pass defense that through seven weeks is No. 1 in the NFL opposing passer rating and yards allowed and No. 2 in completion percentage and sacks.
Also set to be banned is "propaganda of pedophilia." The amendments would also look to ban the "denial of family values," and seeks to stop propaganda that could "cause minors to desire to change their sex." Quinn, 32, has had a quiet season for the Bears, posting one sack, three quarterback hits and eight tackles in seven games.

You're working furiously, your five o'clock deadline is nearing, and the weekend is just around the corner.nnBut you've still got so much to do and less than an hour to finish. You silently curse yourself for not starting sooner. So, what happened? How did you end up running out of time? nnWell, there were hours you spent scrolling through social media, your multiple coffee breaks, re-reading emails, and completing tasks that you could've started later.nnProcrastination haunts all of us. We're all guilty of procrastinating and saying, 'I'll do it later,' or 'I'll start in a while.' But the negative impacts of procrastinating can steal dreams, cause missed opportunities, and even destroy lives.nnSome people are lucky enough to pinpoint their tendency to procrastinate and how much it holds them back. Let's discuss how procrastination can wreck your dreams and how you can combat it.nnThe Origins of the Procrastination is the Thief of Time nnOften, Charles Dickens gets the credit for coining the term 'procrastination is the thief of time.' However, the truth is that Dickens popularized the proverb by putting it into the mouth of Mr. Micawber. nnIn 1850, Mr. Micawber said, 'My advice is, never do tomorrow what you can do today. Procrastination is the thief of time.'nnWhile Mr. Micawber became a widely quoted character for pronouncing the proverb' procrastination is the thief of time,' he was hardly original. In reality, the phrase is an adage created by English writer Edward Young. nnYoung wrote a 10,000-line poem known as 'The Complaint' or 'Night-Thoughts on Life, Death, and Immortality or simply 'Night-Thoughts.' In this extensive poem, the poet muses over death over the courses of nine' nights,' i.e., nine sections.nnYoung's use of the proverb 'procrastination is the thief of time' goes beyond caution against putting things off. Instead, the poet suggests that time wasted procrastinating one thing is time wasted doing nothing of any consequence. nnIt goes to say that if we delay filling our taxes by arranging our spices alphabetically, the fact remains that we should have done something of far more importance. nnHow Does the Proverb Describe 'Procrastination'?nnEdward Young describes a procrastinator as someone who procrastinates in doing things at the right time and finds themselves in situations where they had little time to complete the task.nnTypically, people procrastinate because:n•tThe task is long and complicated. n•tThe activity is tedious and not important. n•tThey prefer doing their pleasurable activities.n•tThey have a careless attitude and believe that nothing wrong will happen if they miss their deadline.n•tThey are over-confident and think that they have enough time/competency to complete the task. n•tThey do it as a result of peer pressure and fear mockery or ridicule if they hand in work early. n•tThey do it due to pure laziness.nnWhy is Procrastination the Thief of Time?nn'Procrastination,' deferring a task or putting something off, is the 'thief of time' because you waste time by delaying tasks. nnThis hypothesis potentially embraces two meanings: you are wasting time when you could have accomplished what you need to achieve. And that all procrastination is time-wasting.nnLet's discuss the top common examples of procrastination:n•tSomeone who spends several days thinking about starting an essential assignment, thus they have to rush to finish work in a hasty and stressful manner.n•tA person who wastes months before approaching the person they're romantically interested in, thus missing their chance to enter a relationship with them. n•tSomeone who wastes years before starting a project they're passionate about, thus struggling wSupport the show

It was Friday the 13th, March 13th, 2020. I didn't know life would change. They told us we would be out of school For two weeks. At first, I thought it would be a good break. Little did I know things would Change so fast. I was in seventh grade,And I didn't think coronavirus Would be that big of a deal. I was wrong. Actually, I liked the idea Of us being out of school. I thought I wouldn't be doing any work, And I could chill. I was wrong. My gma had me up the first MondayChopping grass. It was so itchy. That was wrong. I had to do packets of schoolwork. They thought I'd be doing the work packet. They were wrong. Then they had us to pick up our Chromebooks And told us to be online by 8 a.m. Me and my friends thought it would be easier Doing schoolwork at home. We were wrong. Finally, I got out for summer. I thought I would be enjoying A break from school. I was wrong. My gma. Yep. She had other ideas. That first week we were back in the garden. Picking corn in that itchy grass. That was wrong, August came, and I thought I'd be back in school. I thought I would be able to experience All that was eighth grade. I was wrong. They put me in theater arts. We just watched videos. If people think that is a good way to learn, tThey are wrong. I did get to practice with the cheer team. I finally got to do something I actually wanted to do. That felt right. However, we didn't get to cheer at any ball game, And I didn't get to experience eighth grade formal. That was wrong. It is now a Wednesday in May, May 26, 2021. Nope, I had no idea How much life would change. They said it would be two weeks, But it's been a whole year and two months. Things that changed so fast Became things that changed for so long. First in the news, my apologies for the last several months with no episodes at all. I've got a ton of great episodes and a bunch of great content planned, but they may come sporadically for the next little bit while I'm dealing with some personal and family issues. But so much has happened with LinkedIn Ads since the last episode. So let's run through some of them. The first is the Twitter user @DannyGavin, who's a VP of Marketing for an agency. He brought to my attention when his rep sent him an actual document of the types of things that LinkedIn expects to be affected when iOS 14 rolls out. And of course, by this point, we already have iOS 14.5. But it's a cool graphic that I'll share with you. Then a few weeks later, one of my own account reps send it to me as well, but Danny gets props for getting it to me before my reps. So thanks for that. We're, of course going to have a whole episode all about the cookie-geddon and the effect on LinkedIn Ads. But for right now I'll just say LinkedIn has this available, ask your rep. And I'll go deeper into it in a future episode. Next, I want to point you to towards one of the best podcast episodes I've ever heard. So there's a podcast about Facebook ads specifically and it's called Next Level Facebook Ads Podcast hosted by Phil Graham. And specifically, the episode that I want all of you to go and listen to is Episode 196. How I'd spend $20 per day on Facebook Ads. The whole goal of of his podcast episode is just to talk about like running low budgets and testing. But what he ended up doing was showing a masterclass on how to approach testing and optimization, AB testing, how to strategically test through your your content. So I'll link to that in the show notes. I highly recommend going to listen to that episode, I absolutely could not have said it better myself. Then I was really excited by something I saw in my inbox. This been a couple months ago, but LinkedIn started sending out new emails with a subject line that says you have a new comment for review. This was back at the beginning of March of 2021. When I got my first one. And I was so excited by this because if you've talked to me about comment moderation inside of sponsored content, you've probably gotten an earful about how, how difficult it is, as a company to moderate and plan and understand the comments that are coming in. So with this one, some of our clients started getting emails that says, "hey, you got a new comment, click here to see it". Now there's a whole lot I wish we got with these emails. I wish it would give us like the text of the comment with, you know, quick actions like like or respond or something. But at least for right now, we're getting something. I'm sure this is not rolled out to all accounts yet, because I'm assuming I would get inundated with these on like an every few minutes basis. But at least some of our accounts did I think probably three or four accounts have access to this so far. So watch for that in the future. And I'm excited to keep watching LinkedIn roll this stuff out. Next, the company Metadata.io released their own benchmarks report from LinkedIn Ads. And I'll link to it in the show notes down below. But it's entitled What We Learned From $15 million in Spend on Facebook and LinkedIn. And you can see the data directly, they put it into like a nice Google Data Studio report. And they also say get the report. So definitely worth checking out in quite a few cases, the benchmarks that we see versus what Metadata sees are quite different. And I know plenty of the Metadata folks, and I have a good understanding of their strategy as to why we might see differences there. But it's definitely worth checking out to see what other people are seeing in the world of LinkedIn Ads. Okay, I wanted to highlight a couple of reviews for the podcast. Rudeboyj on Apple Podcasts says, "AJ, the hero of LinkedIn marketing, I love love, love AJ, his LinkedIn Ads podcast, so much valuable information and as an agency owner, this is the best place for me to get insider information, tips and tricks that LinkedIn won't tell you about directly. Amazing content. Well worth a listen. Kind regards, Rudy." Rudy, thanks so much for leaving such an awesome review for me. I really appreciate it. Then we have nandogevers from Apple Podcasts. Sorry if I mispronounced the the handle there. But they say learn from the best. "I listened to a ton of business podcasts, it is hit or miss. The LinkedIn Ad podcast might however be the best I've ever heard. No generic nonsense, but actionable points. Keep it up." Absolutely. Thank you so much. That's exactly why we create this. I love to share, okay, and I want all of you to go and leave a review to so that I can shout you out. I want to feature you here. So please let me know what you think of the show. Alright, with that being said, let's hit it. Okay, everyone, I'm super excited to have Phil Gerbyshak here. He is not only the VP of Partnerships for us here at B2Linked.com. He's also the chief Revenue Officer of Process and Results, his company, Phil, so excited to have you on the podcast, this is Phil Gerbyshak and tell us what's new in your world. Phil Gerbyshak 6:21 Oh, boy. So lots of stuff, AJ, with all the changes that's happening with the different ad formats and stuff. You know, LinkedIn is hotter than ever, especially for those self employed folks. And we're seeing a lot of action there. In my world, you know, a lot more engagement in some spots, less engagement and others, and automation still not working on LinkedIn. Funny, right? How that works, sending 1000 connections a day doesn't work. In fact, many of the groups that I'm in say that LinkedIn has shrunk that down to be 100 connections a week. So it's even more important to find the right people to start the right conversations so that you can possibly work with them. AJ Wilcox And we used to get something like 75 per day. So this is a big restriction. Phil Gerbyshak Yeah, yeah, for sure. Huge. AJ Wilcox Lots of people getting their profiles. temp band, I guess will say Phil Gerbyshak Yeah, or shadow banned are not able to send connection requests, or oh my gosh, right, you've reached a commercial limit, because all you do is search, search, search and you never add any value to the network. I mean, lots of things contribute to that, which I'm grateful for. I really think that's an awesome opportunity for all the relationship sales and relationship marketing folks that are listening to this podcast. AJ Wilcox 7:31 Oh, yeah. And we've talked before about the spam problem on LinkedIn, just from so many people doing it wrong. I'm usually not a fan of LinkedIn cracking down on things. But this is one I'm really glad they're cracking down on. Phil Gerbyshak Yeah, AJ Wilcox I obviously have you on here to talk about the sales side about Sales Navigator, about organic. Tell us about your background. Why are you the one that I brought on here? Phil Gerbyshak Well, you know, years ago, when LinkedIn was really infantile, and it was six degrees of Kevin Bacon, I get started with it. And I worked in financial services and my advisors would be like, hey, is this actually something that people actually care about the internet? And this is a long time ago, obviously. And I was like, yeah, I think so. I think so. Right? And I showed them how they could use it. And then, you know, over time, I quit my my day job as a VP of IT, working with financial advisors to learn technology, and moved into my own consultancy. And I started seeing, hey, LinkedIn is thinking about this additional offering that offers more search capability, more opportunity to kind of segregate between an organic user and a paid user, and offer just more and more power. So I started using it, you know, people started asking questions, I started coaching sales teams, I ended up being a VP of sales training at a software company in Tampa, Florida for about a year and a half. I mean, it just naturally happened. And it just totally makes sense. Because really, just about every day that I'm on LinkedIn, I'm looking at Sales Navigator, because I've got 14,000 connections, but I'm like, well, who I just want to focus on Who are those 100, 200, 500 people that I want to pay attention to this week, and Sales Navigator just makes that so much simpler. So I've trained a lot of self employed folks on how to leverage it. And I've been leveraging myself pretty much since Sales Navigator rolled out. AJ Wilcox 9:20 Oh, that's awesome. Well, so glad we got the Sales Navigator pro on here. So the big question I get from people, and I don't quite know how to answer it, which is, hey, AJ, you're the ads guy, but we've also heard about organic LinkedIn, and we know people are doing outreach and we've heard about Sales Navigator. And they asked, you know, what should we prioritize? What should we be doing with LinkedIn? What's your response there? How would you answer that? Phil Gerbyshak Well, the answer is all of the above. Organic Sales Navigator and sponsored for sure. When you think about organic everybody in the organization should be organically using LinkedIn. Should be building their network, should have a good profile, right, should be an ambassador for the organization, sharing content, you know, doing things just like they would in the office as an on matter of course, right? I mean, people want to work with you if you're a company that's welcoming, so be a company that's welcoming, right? I mean, be that way. Get all your employees using organic for sure. And frankly, there's a lot of things that are only available in the organic version of LinkedIn that show that you're not dead, right? Posting to LinkedIn, building your actual network, not just sending in mails, things like that. So organic, for sure. When we think about sponsored, that's the marketer side, that's the brand side, that's the opportunity to build brand awareness, and in many ways to make better offers that if your sales team made may or may not resonate all that well, because they're just kind of blasting it out there. They're not gonna, they're not going to really hone in on the exact target. Not that they mean to, I'll tell you, right, as a sales guy, of course I mean to. But I'm not just connected to the right people, and frankly, putting it in front of them at the right time. Well, I can't always do that. I send out when I have time, not necessarily when is the best time or when LinkedIn knows that they're on. So sponsored, helps with that, and then Sales Navigator for the sales team, for those heavy duty recruiters. Absolutely. Sales Navigator is great, because all just about all of the search features that we use to target on advertisement on the sponsored side are available on Sales Navigator. So if you think about Sales Navigator, it's almost like advertising for one on one results. And sometimes if you already connected or your second degree connected, this is why you gotta use organic side and get connected, right? You can send a message hyperfocus that says, hey, AJ, are you interested in learning how to increase your revenue with LinkedIn advertising? And if he says yes, well, then we have a conversation here. And I can send a link to maybe sign up for that same webinar that the sponsored posts are, save the ad dollar, and sometimes get an even better target, but not always, because we're not always connected to everybody that could benefit from our products or services. AJ Wilcox 12:03 Absolutely. All right. So I may have jumped the gun a little bit. Can you define Sales Navigator for us? Like, what is the product, you've kind of told us a little bit about what it does? Phil Gerbyshak Sure. So LinkedIn Sales Navigator is their most premium sales solution. LinkedIn premium is an option as well, I would tell you that it's it's about 10% as effective as Sales Navigator, so I'd focus on Sales Navigator Sales Navigator is a separate sign up, it costs anywhere between $80 a month, if you go month to month, or $65 or so if you go out for a year at a time. And it is an awesome laser focus search tool that allows you to save leads and save people that you want to work with in different lists so that you can review them. And it allows us to see, oh, are there lead updates? Meaning did Phil's profile post anything new. Or account updates, did Process and Results, did B2Linked post anything new on LinkedIn. Have both of those things. And then it's also an opportunity to interface with the CRM, that's a more premium tool, but you can interface with Salesforce, or with Microsoft Dynamics and some of the other tools to interface so that you capture every interaction so that if I go on vacation, an agent needs to pick up my accounts, he can see that interaction, but only if the company pays for the team solution of Sales Navigator. AJ Wilcox Ah, okay, so this is like the power tool for sales folks. Phil Gerbyshak Absolutely. AJ Wilcox Yeah, cool. And I love this because between 65 and 80 bucks a month, that puts it at about twice the cost or maybe a little bit more than like LinkedIn premium, but it has so many more features that has basically like a little mini CRM. And anyway, that feels like a really, really good value to me. Phil Gerbyshak 14:00 I think so right? I mean, if your leads to close, right, if it takes you let's say 10 or 15 people to get there at $65 a month. And let's say that's all one of your sales people gets. Well that's $6.50 a lead. If you turn that into one meeting, which turns into one, SQL or MQL right, depending on how you target that. Well, heck, I think that's a pretty fair price. And your salespeople have to do outreach, right. I'd love to tell you that just marketing is enough, but it's not. We see all the time that folks that advertise with us, they may not have a great sales process at the end of that. And then they're like, Well, hey, people are magically spitting money at me. It's like, well, no kidding. If you don't have a sales process, it just, it frankly, doesn't work. So you need a sales team that's using that and you combine the two, right? It's like if you remember the old superfriends right wonder twin powers activate form of revenue. It's pretty cool. AJ Wilcox Perfect. Well, so we here at B2Linked, we do, obviously, a lot of advertising. And the strategy in our advertising is generally trying to get a cold audience from our ideal market to identify themselves and make it so we can start nurturing up and following up and starting a relationship. But I would gather that the approach with both organic and Sales Navigator as an extension could be quite different than how we're approaching it. So tell us about the difference in strategy and audiences there. Phil Gerbyshak 15:33 Sure, well, first of all, organic and Sales Navigator are really meant to be one to one tools, more than one to many tools, those certainly when you post something, your status, I mean, you're hoping your whole network sees it, you're hoping it goes viral, let's let's be honest here that that's the hope. But it's hard to know if it did anything valuable when you don't get any engagement. So what I would say is, if you think about using the organic side, and you post something, whoever then comments, whoever likes, whoever shares, whoever, you know, does something interacts, get some engagement, then the sales team should follow up with them and try to see there's an opportunity for a conversation. Well, on the sponsored side, we run an advertisement. And, you know, they might have never heard of the company before. But hopefully, you're posting something in the sponsored content that solves a problem or illuminates a problem. Or sometimes, you know, that offers a vitamin to make things even better for you. You know, those are the three reasons we run sponsored. And you're hyper focused on who you're talking to, right, you have that audience really dialed in, you've got those facets dialed in, but you don't know their name. So to personalize, you have to go Sales Navigator organic, because I have to see your name. But on the sponsored side, you're really more demographically targeting them plus some company size and things like that. So again, right, you have to think about, okay, organic is mass network. 5000 10,000 50,000 people, right, depending on how big you've grown your network, sometimes less. But then we've got the Sales Navigator, which is super targeted at an individual one at a time. And then the sponsored content, which is super targeted at the persona that we're having, but yet we don't know their name, who I love three prongs, all important. AJ Wilcox 17:27 So one thing we've noticed is that when we are running ads for a client, and the client is also like their sales team is engaged in in outreach, we find that they really supercharge each other. Like when someone has been seeing our ads for a month or two. They're a lot more likely to respond when someone reaches out. Because they're like, oh, I've heard of your company before you guys must be legit. Like, let's talk. Phil Gerbyshak Yeah, it seems so obvious when you say that, AJ but let's break that down. Right? Let's, let's talk a little smaller. Right? So I've never heard of your company before and you cold call me. And then I email you. And then I send you a LinkedIn inmail. And maybe I follow you on LinkedIn. And maybe you happen to find me on Twitter and maybe engage with you on Instagram and okay, so I email you. So I did 6, 12, 15, 20 touches, Still nothing. Now imagine instead, if they knew your business name, and they knew that you solve problems they do. Even if they don't know it. They know it right. It's here. It's here. It's in the back of their head. And they think Oh, interesting. So B2Linked does LinkedIn advertising. Oh, that's cool. And then me the sales guy calls up and says ring ring. Hey, AJ, Hey, buddy. I was wondering, do you, you know, do you need some LinkedIn advertising? And he might say no, I'm good. Or he might say, oh, yeah, I've heard of you guys. That's pretty cool. Well, again, supercharge those by combining streams, get them together because building awareness, though, that you don't really want to pay for awareness. It's important, right? I mean, you want to pay for results. Let's be clear. But that awareness is a nice byproduct of what happens for people who don't necessarily click the ad that you can't retarget that don't sign up for you because they're like, oh, I've heard of you. Especially if you do a good job of the company's marketing. It helps your sales team just so much. Oh my gosh. AJ Wilcox 19:16 Oh, yeah. And one thing I really wish LinkedIn would have taken across the finish line. A couple years ago, they had a beta, where a sales team could add leads in Sales Navigator. This was called Project Stereo, by the way, and as soon as they added it, they were tagging those leads, then the marketing team could pick this up for direct targeting. And so you could really target the exact individuals that the sales team cared about. And we had several clients who were part of the beta. It worked great. And then we heard that they sunset it, it was probably just too much work to upkeep Phil Gerbyshak Or it's super creepy, right? I mean, that's the challenge, right? I mean, sometimes we get super creepy I mean that that is sometimes a challenge. So I think that's why you have to do all of them even more because that Stereo project. It's interesting, right? If I just talk to you, and then I pop up, I mean, what do we Facebook here? Come on AJ? AJ Wilcox Sometimes I wish. Phil Gerbyshak Right. AJ Wilcox Alright. So obviously, the LinkedIn advertising is oftentimes handled by the marketing department. But we see that outreach, even handling of Sales Navigator is oftentimes over on the sales side. And there's a definite divide there. So when you work together with these strategies with these different effectively channels, how do you do that? And who owns what leads? How do you kind of heal the divide? Phil Gerbyshak 20:41 Sure. So if you think about sales development, and business development, that's a marketing function, and a backup sales function, meaning when I make a phone call, if I'm, you know, not shy about sharing my company name, I'm aiding in awareness of the company that I work with. Well, we might say, well, oh, that's Phil, that's marketing. Okay. But it's a phone call. So you might say, well, Phil, that sales? And the answer is it's both. So here's what you want to do, right? It to heal that divide is you need to meet together, you need to spend some time together and say, Hey, here's the 3, 5, 7, 10 campaigns, we're going to run. And sales team wants to run behind this. And as you're talking to people, you could just ask, Hey, have you heard about XYZ campaign? Now they might say no. And that's perfectly fine. Not a problem, right? But if they say yes, well, now we've got a conversation path. Now we've got something to do. And this is really important, because what gets measured gets repeated. Okay, understand this, right? So if you measure the fact that the sales team put in there, oh, yeah, they're aware of one of these 10 campaigns. Now, marketing says, oh, cool, right? We're, it's a marketing attributed lead. That's fantastic. The work we're doing is actually helping the sales team. But a lot of times, we worry so much that if marketing helped us, we're not going to get full credit for that deal, for that lead, for that conversion. That I'm not going to put it in there. I'm just going to say, Yeah, they were totally cold. And marketing might say, well, if I tell them, well, they're never going to tell me back. So why should I do that. So I want to encourage you, if you're, you're listening to this, even if you have a marketing team and a sales team of one each, to spend some time together, talk about those campaigns, really heal that. And then make sure that it gets measured, make sure that gets put into your CRM, make sure you know even if you have a simple CRM, like a spreadsheet, just put it in there. Oh, yeah, this customer heard about, and then gently let the marketing team know hey, by the way, gang, thanks so much. This week, six of our leads came through, and we're aware of that campaign that you had. Now they might not have clicked it, they might not have filled it out, they might not be in your CRM from the marketing side. But they absolutely should be from your sales side. And they can partner up because then you know what works. Now you got feedback. Now you keep that feedback loop going. Do more of what works, less than what doesn't, invest in the winners, ditch the losers. AJ Wilcox 23:18 I can't impress on everyone enough how important this is for marketers to play the sales enablement role. And for sales to play the marketing enablement role. That communication is absolutely crucial. Phil, something else you mentioned, that is really interesting to me. You mentioned how Sales Navigator has a lot of the same targeting criteria that ads do. So what that makes me think is me as the advertiser, I could go to the sales team, and I could say, hey, here is the exact way we're targeting here are the audiences we're going after. And then someone from sales could say, perfect, I'm going to go and run searches with exactly the same parameters. And that's how I'm going to start my outrage. Is there value there? Phil Gerbyshak Yeah, well, there's huge value there because you can set that up as a default search criteria. So you can search inside that universe. So let's say the marketing team is going to target you know, this much of the universe, they might target 100,000 people. Well, each salesperson might only really responsible. Say you got 10 salespeople, everybody's response for 10,000. How do you slice that up? Well, it could be by industry, so they add one parameter, industry. Okay, add another, location. Now, let's also not forget, and many sales people do, they broaden it out to everybody on LinkedIn, instead of shrinking it down first, and going first and secondary connection that people you already know. And the friends of people that you already know. I mean, folks, if I drop AJ Wilcox's name with a prospect that has heard of loves AJ Wilcox, they are going to open right up and we're going to get to have a real conversation about what's going on. On the other hand, I cold call and I pretend like I don't know AJ. That AJ is an oh, who's that? I don't know. Well, that's not going to open it up and it's gonna be harder. Now replace the word AJ Wilcox with your company name. Replace that with B2Linked, replace that with Process and Results. Replace that with your company name. And if they're aware of it, now they're going to open up. Oh, yeah, I've seen that. So you have to row together? Absolutely. And let's not forget, sales team can feedback. You know what, I appreciate that you gave me those seven criteria. But you know, what I found really helpful is when we include X, Y, or Z, you know, maybe it's people who've only been on LinkedIn, you know, less than 30 days or 90 days. Or maybe it's people who've changed jobs in the last, you know, in the last 90 days, something like that, that sometimes the marketers forget is available, so they can dial it in even more. Okay, here's a quick sponsor break. And then we'll dive into more on Sales Navigator, and specifically how we can make your job with this easier. Alright, let's jump into it here, Phil, tell me because there are a lot of people doing things really wrong on LinkedIn organically? What are the common mistakes that you see with organic? And then what are some of the common mistakes you see with Sales Navigator? Phil Gerbyshak 26:51 Well, with organic, a lot of your people look dead. They haven't posted in a while they haven't gotten any updates in a while they haven't done anything to their profile. And it still maybe lists their old job, it lists things that they're no longer doing. Or they don't take the time to even copy and paste the job description that you provided them. So work with HR to actually build out your team's profile, make sure that profiles are strong. And then make sure that you tell your sales team, hey, here's content that you can share as often as you want. And don't forget, please add some of your personality. Because here's here's the truth, right? Everybody interacts more with you, if you're just talking about stuff, if you're talking just about work. If you're in a networking event, you're like, come on, man, that's horrible. So share some of that personality share some of the stuff outside of work. Yes, I understand marketers, you want them to push your webinar, your white paper, all that sponsored content. But don't forget to encourage them to be them selves. That's a big miss that I see with a lot of these folks on incomplete profiles or out of date profiles or dead profiles, and then not sharing enough. And then frankly, I'm going to give you one other big mistake on organic and then I'll shift to navigator and that is they don't connect with everybody inside the organization. I can tell you right now, most of your higher level associates on the team, whether they're whether you're a big company, and you have CEOs and C-stars, or whether you're a smaller company of an owner, it doesn't matter. You as the owner, as the C-star likely have more reach and more connections, then anybody in the organization. You should be sharing those with your sales team. your sales team should be able to see oh, look, AJ is connected to this person. I should mention AJ now they might not know AJ, because AJ might be willing to connect to anybody. Or AJ might be super tight with his networking and not connected anybody that he doesn't know. If it's the latter, and I drop AJ's name. The person's like, Oh, yeah, I saw AJ at this event or that event, or we work together at this thing, or we went to church, or we are part of this group, or that group. That is an opportunity for your sales team to immediately build rapport. But your executives, your leadership team has to connect to the sales team. Because otherwise, that's an opportunity lost. Okay, so what are some of the big mistakes with Sales Navigator? First, they set it up terribly. Or they don't set it up at all right? Then the marketing team doesn't give them any of the criteria. They need to be successful in that they just say, Oh, yeah, we'll just use a persona. Really, what's the marketing campaign that you're working on that you want me to focus on for this 30 days because I can change it. Sales Navigator is not static. So that's another big mistake folks make. They change their target, but they forget to change in Sales Navigator. Now that doesn't mean they change their profile, it could, in fact that encourage them to right to really focus on who are they trying to be a resource for, but they might forget to change our targeting which saves them or will cost them some keystrokes, every keystroke saved is one or two extra calls that can be made today, so that it's way easier to reach your quota. So they don't do that. The other thing that they don't do, they don't set it up, they don't change. The last thing they don't do is they don't actually save anything inside of Sales Navigator. Tthey don't save leads, they don't save accounts, they don't do anything with that stuff. And when you don't do that what happens is LinkedIn is automated, artificial intelligence doesn't help you. I think you should combine all these forces. You should throw them all in a blender and use them all. Because when you do them all, organic, sponsored, and Sales Navigator, marketing and sales can sing together and make beautiful music. And when you don't, well, you're almost fighting against each other. AJ Wilcox 31:05 Oh, yeah, I'd much rather be singing Kumbaya and fighting a sales department. What about measuring success, because on the advertising side, it's so easy to measure the success. If you're tracking your leads into your CRM, you can literally know at the individual ad level, what your cost per marketing qualified lead is or your cost per sales accepted lead or sales qualified lead, cost per proposal given, cost per close. And so we thrive off of the metrics. But when it comes to the organic, sometimes it's a lot harder to determine is what you're doing being successful. So how are you going to measure that success? Phil Gerbyshak Well, first, how many of the leads that are in the pipeline? Have LinkedIn profiles associated with them? If you're using Salesforce, if you're sing dynamics, many of them do just automatically. They pop up. But here's the thing, is your sales team actually doing anything with those? One of the things that you could use to measure success is LinkedIn's own social selling index. They're talking, they've talked for, actually, for at least the last three years,"We're doing away with the SSI score." I don't think they are, they might call it something else. Right? Because social selling is a total misnomer. That's a whole other episode. But social selling? Nobody sells on social, they sell with social, let's be super clear. Totally different episode, but just be aware of that. Okay, so how do you measure that right? Is your team is their SSI score? Are they looking at profiles, you can see that, again, if you have an organizational account, you can see are they viewing profiles? Are they doing searches? Are they investing their inmail? Right? Are they actually taking those inmails? 20, 30, 50 emails a month. And are they sending them? That is almost like a direct line to the right person that they're wasting? Imagine if you provided them with 1000 direct dial phone numbers of every person that they want to talk to him of their ideal target customer, and they didn't call them and instead, they're like, oh, well, I didn't know that was valuable. Come on. So sales team, use your inmails. Use your inmails. So you measure those and then you measure some of that engagement. Did they did they put anything back into the CRM? Because otherwise, what happens is, the salesperson keeps the connection, it never makes it to the CRM, and there's never any connectivity, and you just wasted $80 a month because you can't measure anything. So that's how I would do that. And then again, you know, periodically look at their profiles. Don't just use LinkedIn's SSI score, but actually look at them. Right? Spend some time every quarter train, retrain your sales team, get them hey, what are some best practices? What are you doing? How has this helped you get them to share that I would say at least a quarter, probably once a month, though. Just don't do it at the end of the quarter and the end of the month, because you want to tick off a salesperson forced them to get quota. And then don't let them work at the end of the quarter because they're busy on training. Don't do that. AJ Wilcox 34:06 Great. Great point. Yeah, let the sales guys fly free for the last week of every month. All right. So if someone wants to get started with advertising, obviously, like listening to this podcast is a great place to start. But if you want to get started on the organic side, Phil, can you tell us like what are some simple things, some simple steps that you can use to get started? Phil Gerbyshak 34:27 Sure. So first, I can't get dressed before you get busy. Get your profile up to speed. First, most important thing, second, get connected, right? Connect to the people that you know that you need to know that you want to know. Third, get sharing, share some content, get some stuff out there. And fourth, do it every single day. Real simple process there. Just four little steps, get dressed before you get busy, get connected, get sharing, and then get out there more often. AJ Wilcox Great. And then what about Sales Navigator? If someone's listening to you? And they're like, yes, this would be the ideal step for my organization. How do they get started with Sales Navigator? Phil Gerbyshak Sure. So we're going to put a link here in the show notes for you so that you can get a free 60 day trial. If you've never used Sales Navigator before. Sign up, that seems obvious, but sign up, right actually input your credit card information and sign up. Secondly, set it up, like actually go through and be mindful about that stuff. You might have to partner with the marketing team, you might have to ask yourself, whatever that is, and then show up, get there all the time be frequent. Again, just like on the organic side, you can't expect Sales Navigator is just going to work magic for you if you don't work the tool. AJ Wilcox Beautiful. Okay, so it sounds like a lot like running a company that runs LinkedIn Ads is already hard enough. And it's a little bit scary, a little bit daunting to think about okay, great strategies, I need to add these onto my plate. How can people get started without losing all their hair? And you know going crazy? Phil Gerbyshak 35:57 Oh, my gosh, yeah. You know, I mean, some some people believe bald is beautiful. And that's perfectly cool, right? I'm great with that. But you know what, we created just a little course, for you the Sales Navigator jumpstart for busy business owners and teams, it is really simple. If you sign up by the fourth of June, we're gonna make it just $97. If you sign up for that, it's $147. But it's gonna be some zoom calls, just like any other meeting that you're used to where you can ask them questions, but it'll be facilitated by yours truly, we're going to go through that. And we're going to share lots of stuff. So that's the Sales Navigator Jumpstart for those busy business owners, for those self employed folks, and for salespeople. AJ Wilcox Can give us a little sneak peek on what's going to be in the course what people are going to actually learn. Phil Gerbyshak Yeah, absolutely. So first, you know, you're going to learn a little bit more about what is Sales Navigator some of the ways that I've used it, I'm going to share with you, we're gonna talk about some best practices for setting it up. So you can be successful, right from the jump, super important, what you use it for, how should you use it, some of those tools who should be responsible for this? Sometimes you might send one of your sales people and they might say, Well, you know what, this isn't really for me. So let's talk about that, we're going to talk about some of those things that you're going to discover. We're also going to talk about augmenting navigator with advertising and advertising with navigator. So if you've got some ads that you're running, you can send your sales team with that. We're going to show you some of the things that people do wrong when I actually do use it. And then some of those daily habits so that you can actually maximize your efforts and get the jumpstart you need so you can actually use Sales Navigator as a lever instead of just one more expense. AJ Wilcox And a little sneak peek I'll be making a guest entrance on the topic about the ad side about how to use Sales Nav and sponsored ads together so anyway, I hopefully that doesn't push anyone away. Who's this best for? Is this for sales teams? Is this for business owners? Is this for individuals? Who is gonna get the best use out of it? Phil Gerbyshak 37:59 Yeah, well first you know self employed folks right they're responsible for making them rain a lot of times, driving the business for their for your business. So if you're a busy self employed business owner you should certainly attend. If you're a sales team and each person on that team has a individual Sales Navigator license well that's another great opportunity to take part of this and if you're responsible at all for lead generation or revenue generation, you're someone that definitely could benefit from this Sales Navigator jumpstart. AJ Wilcox Okay, awesome. And even if you don't make the early bird $147 for all this information is a total no brainer. So I would highly encourage everyone to check it out. We're talking here about the kind of what masks most people are wearing today, which are either at least two ply, reasonably well fitting cloth face masks, or garden variety off the shelf. They're called surgical masks, but I've worn actual surgical mask was caught cost five times as much and fit better. So they're not really surgical masks. They're more like clinical use masks that you can buy fairly cheap but places everywhere from Harbor Freight to Walgreens or whatever. You can buy them lots of places, but they're called surgical masks and they're made of the same kind of material. That's the kind The stuff we're talking about lightweight, all over the place can get them anywhere these days, garden variety masks, somebodies respiratory droplets of the size that can carry viral particles, or that can carry flu particles or the carry cold viruses, or that carry a whole bunch of other sensitive viruses that only biologists bother to memorize all the names for.Tthey catch the respiratory droplets that carry those, when you exhale, they catch them with somewhere between 65 and 85% efficiency, depending on the specifics of the masks. So most effective when they're catching stuff coming out of the breathers, respiratory tract. But also, they're stopping something like 60% of incoming particles that are already in the air that somebody less careful has exhaled at is bringing it inGo to Beans, Bullets, Bandages & You by clicking HERE!
People who know me know I am a Christmas fiend.I like to get my tree up early, I have the festive spirit running through my veins from about late October onwards. I once got my tree up before November even hit and after I posted it to Instagram I had radio stations ringing me up wanting to interview me about it. That’s when I realised I must be some kind of freak. But I see this year more and more people are doing it, more and more people are getting into the festive season early, tree up, decorations underway, people are already Christmas shopping.Except me. It’s midway through November and I still haven’t done it.My boss asked me the other day if I was alright: what was happening, why wasn’t my tree up?The answer is, 2020.What a year. It’s been exhausting: are we not all completely spent and still a bit topsy-turvy and upside down?Or is that just me? Lockdowns, elections, this global pandemic sweeping around freaking everyone out, this year has felt unusual to say the least. Most would argue that’s the perfect excuse to get a tree up and put a bow on it and call it quits. It’s perhaps why so many are racing to the end of the year by getting the trees up early. So I’m under pressure, it’ll have to go up this weekend.Luckily it’s not a real tree because they’re not up for sale yet. Tthey should be, given the rate at which everyone seems to be racing round spending money. From the record and rising house prices to the crazy auction sales of art, to the mad dash to buy boats, people seem to have money to burn.I hope all this is good for the economy and boosting it the way it should, but it needs to go the distance to make a real impact. Short term stimulus is good, it’s certainly good for mood and confidence, but it needs to go beyond a post-lockdown sugar rush.I talked this week to the head of the NZ Hospitality Association, she said there’s buzz back in the cafes and restaurants in some places, but not others. CBD’s are struggling, some smaller towns are struggling. Suburban cafes in big centres may well be booming, but it’s got to spread wider than that to benefit everyone.Likewise the housing market, an agent told me the other day that all this reportage of a booming market is actually having a chilling effect on some buyers who are put off, who believe that it’s just too crazy to even bother trying to get in at this stage. So, our recovery may well be a game of two halves, much like the rush to celebrate Christmas is.There’re those of us who’ve got the tree up already and are surrounded by tinsel, and others of us who’re wondering when we’ll get the energy to drag the tree out of the garage.
Well we have been following the narrative of Joseph and we have watched Joseph go from basking in the privileges afforded to the favorite son of a doting father to an object that is auction off at a slave market to the highest bidder. We have watched his brother strip his coat from his body like skin from an animal. And that began a process by which his entire identity was just as violently stripped away from him. His language was stripped, culture stripped, values, name, reputation, influence, position stripped. He was truly naked - body and soul. If ever there was circumstances where you could say you were justified in being bitter, resentful and angry - circumstances where you’d be entitled to a bit of self-pity and depression it would be this. Imagine the confusion and loneliness in Joseph’s mind as he tries to make heads or tails of why all this happened. Is God even real? What did I do to deserve this? Joseph could have forever been imprisoned in these dark lonely walls of self-pity and feeling sorry for himself. God delivered Joseph from that mental prison. Joseph was able to trust God such that he not only was able to exist, but he thrived. He rose and became a blessing in Potipher’s house. And if you didn’t know better, it would sure seem that the rags to riches story is complete. Joseph has risen to a position of prominence in the house of Potipher. That’s a significant accomplishment. Potipher was a wealthy captain in Pharaoh’s army and probably had dozens and dozens of slaves. I know the English rendering captain of the guard doesn’t sound that impressive. The same title given to the Babylonian general who destroys Jerusalem in 2 Kings 25. Joseph is no longer doing manual labor. He’s administrating, managing, organizing. He has authority. He is respected. The text says Joseph was an attendant to Potiphar. That word ‘attendant’ is used to describe Joshua’s relationship to Moses. In other words, Joseph was not just a personal assistant. He was the COO of a major business, of the whole estate. I’m guessing that his lifestyle and influence as a slave in Potipher’s house far exceeded his lifestyle and influence as a shepherd in Palestine. The rags to riches story is complete. Joseph has arrived. Right? Put a bow around it. The end. But the story is far from over. In fact we are just getting started. The the screws are going to be turned in on him in ways he never could have dreamed. It’s not going to be pretty. And this stage two of testing begins with temptation. Now when you think Potipher’s wife and temptation you are likely thinking sexual temptation and that is there for sure - in spades. But it’s much more sophisticated as we are going to see. In fact, as we build out the temptations that surround the sexual temptation, it helps us to understand why sexual sin is so powerful and how to overcome it. Definition of Temptation Let’s begin with a simple definition. What is temptation? Temptations are like fishing lures. Picture a big juicy worm threaded on a sharp hook. To a fish, it looks really good, but there are really bad hidden consequences. That’s an enticement to do something harmful. And as we read the text, there at least 6 ways in which Joseph is tempted and so we’ll identify those lures that drift by and then talk about how Joseph avoided them. Now the first lure, the first temptation comes at the end of verse 6. Where’s the temptation there? That just sounds like a blessing. Well, be careful what you wish for. Being beautiful can be a curse. Well curse me. No. Think about it. Everywhere Joseph went, he was liked. He was liked by his father. He was liked by Potiphar and in this text we will see that he is also liked by Potiphar’s wife. And your saying, “Man, I hate people like that.” Ah! You see, you’ve demonstrated the curse of beauty. It is not fun to be hated simply because of your gifts. Isn’t that what Joseph’s brother’s said. Joseph’s dad’s favorite. He is handsome. Joseph got all the muscles, the height, the wavy hair, the charm, the athletic ability, the administrative ability. And did Joseph’s brother’s like him for that? They envied him. Being the object of someone’s jealousy is not fun. And it’s for no fault of your own? How can I apologize for being born? It’s actually not easy being extremely talented, extremely beautiful, extremely smart, extremely wealthy, extremely athletic. People envy you. People become jealous of you. You become, as in Joseph’s case, the object of someone else’s desire. Okay, so there’s a temptation for onlookers not to envy, but what’s the temptation for Joseph? The temptation is to believe it - to believe that because I have the currently in-style desirable traits that I am superior to those who do not have such traits. The Temptation is to believe that because you have wavy hair, because you have the muscles, because you have the beauty, academic ability, social talent, wealth that you are superior to others who do not. It is true that being handsome and beautiful will open many doors of opportunity, but in swinging wide, we better beware because many of them will close behind us and lock us into prison’s much worse than prison we thought we were in. And that much worse prison is the belief that you are better than others. Why is it a prison? Because then your value and worth is chained to those identity markers. And soon as that happens, you are living on borrowed time. You are valuable only SO LONG AS YOU are beautiful, athletic, successful, etc. but the second you lose those things, you are yesterday’s news. And so the prison is running from the drooling monster of time who runs at a pace you can barely outrun but the problem is he never tires and you do. Eventually he will catch you and gobble you up and you will be worthless. Time will ensure that one day you will not be beautiful, not successful, not athletic, not powerful….it will win. It’s tempting to believe that we are superior to others because we possess gifts they want. After all, it wasn’t even my idea. Others believe it and told me about it. Even our enemies believe it which is why they are jealous. If even my worst enemies believe it, it must be true. Because you want to be like me, that proves that I have more value than you. And there’s an incredible temptation to lord that over others - to subtly remind others of the valuable things you so effortlessly possess. Man, there is an allure of thinking oneself superior. BUT JOSEPH REFUSED THE BAIT! Here comes the second temptation. I’m focusing on one aspect of this sentence. The way the text captures this is perfect. After a time, his master’s wife ’cast her eyes on Joseph.’ When Joseph was first taken into captivity, he was a boy. He was just 17. He wasn’t even done developing as a man. He was in a low position. But as he aged. As he learned the language. As his form filled out, Potiphar’s wife began in her mind to look at him differently. At first it’s nothing overt. It’s subtle. It’s a second glance. It’s a slightly longer than normal glance. It’s being caught staring from across the room when you think nobody’s looking. At first it’s like, “Oh, there’s that new Cannanite slave. I hate it when Potiphar drags in these inarticulate slaves. What’s his name? Joseph. Okay. But then as he grew, oh, there’s Joseph… He’s kind of cute.” And maybe she starts picking him for certain slave related chores because he’s pleasant to be around. SHE WANTED HIM. And it’s nice to be wanted isn’t it. As Potiphar’s wife comments and remarks and peers at Joseph, this temptation, at least at first, is not appealing to Joseph’s sensuality. It’s actually appealing to his insecurity. You see beneath the sensual desire, is a soul desire. It’s among the most basic needs of the human being to be wanted. We all want to be wanted. To be wanted is flattering to our vanity. To be wanted is proof to our egos that we have worth. To be wanted silences our self-condemning consciences Yes, it’s sexual but it’s first spiritual. When there is a vacancy of worth, identity, value then we open ourselves up for sexual sin. This is so often the crack in the foundation that leads to adultery. A woman stops feeling loved, valued and cherished by her husband. She stops feeling wanted and then someone else expressed interest and desire and it’s over. Now if Joseph was in a vulnerable position of needing to be wanted, just think how influenced he would be by Potiphar’s wife’s advances. Joseph, dang. You got some rippling muscles. Joseph, my. Love the cheek bones and the washboard abs. Joseph, love your deep blue eyes. Joseph, wow. Your sandy hair is so seductive. I like your dark complexion. Who isn’t just totally flattered by that? Just to be wanted. Now the story is a girl wanting a guy. But the temptation works in reverse just as well if not better. What girl doesn’t want to be wanted by the eyes of some man. And there is all sorts of temptations that surround being wanted in this way. If I wear a modest swim suit, or modest clothing, well, nobody is going to look at me. Nobody is going to want me. I see the way they look at the girls with low shirts, tight pants or bikinis. So I want to be wanted in that way. It’s a temptation for a woman to dress this way, is it not? Or maybe it’s the type of photo you choose to post. It’s just slightly revealing, slightly seductive, just a bit edgy. It’s nice to get the comments, “You look great!”" from your girl friends and it wouldn’t be a bad thing if I got a little trolling admiration from some of the guys. If you have a figure that is attractive, well, then I want to capture the eyes of men so that I can feel like I have value and worth. Women, please. Don’t fall for that. Don’t sell yourself so cheaply. Dress for Jesus Christ, not for the shallow fulfillment of lustful men. The lust of men will never fulfill you. Once they get what they want they will spit you out and move on and you will have just barely tasted of the love and security you so desperately crave and then you will be left with nothing but the painful hook. Nothing in the text indicates that Joseph was fishing for this kind of attention but he is noticed nonetheless. The temptation for Joseph is to allow the attention of Potiphar’s wife to fill his soul. Taking the bait is the simple act of enjoying the attention, wanting the eyes to fall on you, wanting the attention to come your way again. If a man, woman, girl, boy enjoys the attention, the hook is set. You’re going to end up in the frying pan. To allow that deep desire to be wanted to be satisfied by the lust of fickle people will destroy your soul. It’s alluring to simply be wanted BUT JOSEPH REFUSED THE BAIT! Here’s the next one. Now there’s something that’s not apparent here in the text until you look a little closer. What’s the temptation being referenced? She says, lie with me! And then you look at Joseph reasoning against this seductress. I’m not seeing any temptation other than the obvious sexual temptation? That’s because he’s speaking from the position of someone who’s already won. Joseph is refusing the allure of power. Everything he says, is speaking from a man who has chosen to not use his power and influence and authority for his own benefit. Joseph is in a position of power. He’s got the trust of Potiphar. He’s got the respect of the other slaves. He’s got influence. He’s got authority to make decisions. A lesser man without character might have reasoned exactly in the opposite direction. You could imagine the exact same circumstances presenting themselves to another person, and he looks at them and he sees opportunity: I’m in charge. My master doesn’t concern himself with anything in the house. He’s entrusted everything to my care. He holds nothing back from me This is about as perfect as it gets! I am powerful enough to get away with this. I have enough autonomy in my life that nobody will question me. I have achieved that station of life such that I can be alone for long periods of time on business trips or alone in my hotel and nobody could ever question me. I am powerful enough to get away with it. The question for powerful people is always, “How am I going to use that power? Will I use it for myself or God?” Joseph speaks from a position where he has determined to use his power for God alone. Do you use your power for selfish gain or God glorifying purposes. Let me give you an example. My mom was a realtor for many years, back when you could buy 100 acres in Eagle for the cost of snowcone. And she really stood out in the market because she wasn’t working for people. She was working for God. People would call her up and say, "Hey, I want to make an offer on a house. She would look at the house and say, ‘you don’t want that house. They would say, yeah I do. No you don’tThey would look at her flabergasted. I’m ready to give you a large commission and you are refusing. Why would you do that?’ Because it’s not a good house. And she would list the reasons. She was in a position of power that she could have used for her benefit but she was working for God not for a commission. Joseph was working for God. Joseph could have seen his position of power as a means to his selfish end. After all the suffering I’ve been through, I deserve a little something for myself. And I’ve worked hard for this position of freedom and autonomy. Do you know that self-pity is one of the largest drivers of pornography. I’ve got it so hard. Nobody knows how difficult my life is, how much I have to absorb. Nobody knows how difficult my wife is. Or in Joseph’s case, nobody has any idea how difficult it is not having a wife, not having an outlet for sexual fulfillment. I deserve some relief. Joseph could have thought down these paths. I’m the big shot now. I’ve got the power and I’m tired of always serving other people. I have the POWER to do something about this problem. It’s time to finally use my position for my own benefit. That’s a real temptation. BUT JOSEPH REFUSED THE BAIT! But we are only on temptation #3. Here’s the next one that attacks him. There’s at least three temptations in this verse that I can see and I’m sure there’s more than that. I’m keying in on one phrase in verse 10. Joseph refused to lie with her, yes, but it also says, he refused to be with her. Make no mistake. Joseph was lonely. He was all alone and there was nobody to help him bear the burden of his sorrow. When a man is lonely, there’s nothing like the softness of a woman to give you sympathy and make you feel special. Man, I’m so sorry. You are an amazing person to have survived what you did. There’s nothing like the soft voice of a woman to say, “You really have a hard job. I’m so proud of you. Great job Joseph. I’m impressed.” There’s nothing like the velvet voice of woman to dribble in a a little respect. I am sure Joseph longed for intimacy because he was lonely. And sex is one of the best short term solutions to loneliness. It’s designed by God to create intimacy. I’m quite sure that Potiphar’s wife didn’t start out by grabbing him by the collar. It was much more subtle, much less brazen, and honestly, much more attractive. Just be with me. You don’t have to work today Joseph. Let’s just hang out at Starbucks. Let’s just enjoy life together. You’re always so deadly serious. Joseph, “Have you been thinking about me?” Joseph, “I’ve been thinking about you. I just like being with you. You make me feel special. You satisfy in me that craving to be close to someone. Hey just sit on the couch with me. It’s not going to hurt anything. I don’t bite.” And do you not think this would be attractive to Joseph? Do you not think his soul was lonely for companionship? BUT JOSEPH REFUSED THE BAIT! But we are still not done. Let’s look at another temptation in the text. What do we mean by this? This temptation happened day after day. Day after day after day a slow drip that just wears away at a person’s resolve. It’s one thing to resist temptation once or twice or three times. But it’s another thing entirely to resist temptation indefinitely, never yielding but always being presented with opportunity. And there is a temptation to yield not for the pleasure but to simply silence the tormenting voices inside your head. If I yield it will all be over. The Navy Seals have a famous training called hell week. And that tortourous week includes laughable amounts of exercise, exposure to cold, minimal sleep and deprivation of pretty much every sort. As the week wears on, you are just mentally, emotionally, physically exhausted. Under those conditions, your body is just screaming. Please stop. You just want it to be over. And it can all be over if you walk up to a bell in the center of camp and ring it. And once you do that, you can take a shower, the pain stops, you can go to bed; it’s all over, but you are also out. That’s how sustained temptation sometimes feels. Your reward for resisting temptation is just more temptation, more torture. It’s not like there is an end in sight. It’s not like you can just attain some level of resistance where suddenly these thoughts and images and desires just go away. We just want to silence the voices in our head that are screaming at us. And caving is what you want to do simply to silence the noise. Don’t you think Joseph felt this way? Of course he did. Man, just the repetition is wearing away at my resolve. I only have so much in me. How long did this go on? Weeks, months, years? And clearly it’s growing in intensity. Joseph, it can all be over, if you just yield. BUT JOSEPH REFUSED THE BAIT! Now I want to talk directly about the allure of sex as pleasure. I’m sure potiphar’s wife was beautiful. I’m certain of it. What wealthy powerful person doesn’t magnetically attract the most beautiful people in society? Of course she was beautiful. Joseph was handsome and well-built. I’m sure Photiphar’s wife was beautiful and well-figured. And to a young single man, a virgin, the height of his sex drive, this would have been very difficult. It would have been pleasurable to catch her eyes. She knew how to use them. The way she dressed. What she chose to reveal. The way she moved. It must have all been quite seductive. But the reason I saved the allure of pleasure to the very end is to help us remember that sex is almost never about pleasure exclusively. It’s a very complex in it’s relationship to our deeper needs for power, respect, intimacy, security. We are complex creatures and everything is connected. We have biological desire for food and even physical necessity for it but that’s only a small reason we eat. Many of us eat for very complex psychological reasons. We eat for social reasons. We eat to take the edge off depression. Sexual intimacy is similar. It satisfies the desire to be wanted. There are elements of power involved. There is closeness and intimacy. There are physiological factors. There are pleasure factors. Pleasure is a powerful motive. Sex from the standpoint of desire is among the most powerful biological drives we have. It’s why it’s used in advertising with great affect. So you have all these psychological factors in the background. And the reason this is important to mention is because Joseph won this battle before it even started. The opportunity presented itself, but all these other areas of his life were settled and determined long ago. Conversely, the man who would have fallen here, would have lost the battle long ago. It is said that the man who falls into adultery doesn’t fall very far. One compromise after another after another and that final step is just the next logical small progression. Sure the attack is full on sensual. If he had managed to this point to stay at arm’s length from the woman, he no longer was now. Now he’s within the orb of her perfume. Now he can see her exactly as she is, he can feel her. But it’s all reactionary at this point. There’s not time to think. And because of all the right decisions made to this point, he did exactly what he should have done: he ran for his life! BUT JOSEPH REFUSED THE BAIT! How Joseph Crushed Temptation Now, how did he do this? Let’s get serious. Listen, the only reason temptation works is because of deception. Nobody would ever fall for temptation without deception. What fish would ever choose to bite a hook with a worm on it if he knew what would happen next. Is the enjoyment of that dinner bite worth becoming a dinner bite for some fly fisherman. Certainly not! But the bait works because you can’t see the hook. It appears so, so different. You can imagine a young fish looking at that bait ball and thinking, man I’ve never seen a worm so juicy. I didn’t even know they made them that big. That’s the most delicious looking thing I’ve ever seen. But he hears in his head the voice of his mother or father saying, “Son, if you ever see a worm that looks so beautiful, so delicious so SEDUCTIVE that you think it can’t be true, run for your life. It will kill you.” And he inspects it from all angles. How can that be bad? These old fish, they don’t know anything. The are always so negative and crusty. They don’t even have instagram and snapchat. How could they possibly know what’s bad. And they go for it and end up on a plaque in someone’s bedroom. A temptation is simply an enticement to do something that is harmful to you. The power of temptation is in it’s ability to deceive. So to overcome temptation it’s all about uncovering the deception. Here’s the first deception to uncover. We are deceived into believing that we are strong. We are not strong. It seems like we are really strong. But in reality we are very weak. Don’t tell yourself that you can someone handle it. You can’t. You are a sucker. You are impulsive and immature. When you know that you are - weak, vulnerable, a wimp, you will do things to ensure that you stay away from danger. If you know you have bad balance, you won’t get near the edge of the cliff. If you think you have good balance but actually have bad balance, then you’ll be dead. Don’t even mess with temptation. The [Welsh] proverb says, “He who would not enter the room of sin must not sit at the door of temptation” If you struggle with going to the beach because of all the immodest swim wear, don’t go. Why put yourself in that situation? If you know your weak that guard your eyes. If you know you will tempted on you computer, then don’t lock it down. The eyes are the gateway into our souls. Be careful little eyes. If you think you can handle it, you will fail. Why? Because what will happen is you will begin to nurse sin at the level of the imagination, a place that nobody else can see. I’m just going to extract some pleasure just thinking about it. It won’t hurt anyone. I can handle that. But you can’t handle it. You had no idea how weak you were. It’s like the guy who thinks he can handle drugs. You can’t handle even a little bit. It will hook you and you will be reeled in to death. Run. Run for your life. You can’t handle a train barreling down on you. You can’t handle an attacking Grizzly. You can’t handle a mountain lion.Run for your life! Every year in Yellowstone, some guy gets gored or run over by a Bison. He looks slow and innocent. Let me just get a bit closer. It’s why the Bible’s recommendation for dealing with sexual sin is flee! We are told to stand firm for the faith. We are told to defend the faith… But when it comes to sexual sin we are told to run for our lives! If you don’t obey this verse (at the level of you MIND), your body is already defiled. The decision is already been made. The only thing that is missing is the occasion. And because we’ve already gone down the road so far that all we need is the occasion, and once the occasion arises, we are done. So first deception to uncover, “I can handle it.” No you can’t. Here’s the second deception to uncover. We are deceived into believing there is no hook. There is a hook. It doesn’t seem like it. It doesn’t seem like there will be any consequences at all. Where? All I see is delight! But the hook is very sharp, very powerful, and very deadly. The consequences of sexual sin are very real. And because they are very well documented, we should all put into our minds, that sexual sin in any form is not an option. Don’t even toy with it. Don’t dabble with it. Don’t be like the fish…man, I wonder if there really is a hook in there? Just believe it, close down mental discussion and resolve it in your mind. Those people who I know who have been most successful in overcoming sexual sin all think about it in the exact same way. It simply is not an option. Don’t make disobeying God in this way something that comes up for discussion. Let’s take a vote on it. What are the pros and cons? There are only cons. Why would I do this? It’s poison. It’s a land mine. I’m not going to play flag football in an uncleared mine field. It’s just not an option. Now here’s why that is so important. There is a world of difference, psychologically, between something that is nearly impossible and something that is actually impossible. Winning the lottery is nearly impossible.. Statistically speaking it’s about 1 in 300 million. Your many times more times more likely to get hit by lighting and get attacked by a shark and get in both a plane crash and a car crash consecutively than winning the lottery. And yet people happily say, “You can’t win if you don’t play.” If it’s even the slightest possibility, that minuscule chance has toyed with the imagination of so many and destroyed thousands and thousands of lives. Because it’s possible it controls your imagination. Conversely, if it’s not an option, if it’s impossible, if you’ve closed down discussion, ratified it, made it an unalterable policy, then it cannot control your imagination. You don’t just crave owning the country of Spain. That would be cool, and you might even start dreaming about it if it were possible, but it’s not possible. No human could ever do that. It’s not an option. So it occupies zero space in your brain. This by the way, is the way you silence the torture of daily temptation. You may think, God that’s not fair that you just keep torturing. Day after day he has to entertaining Potiphar’s wife’s proposition. No, he doesn’t have to entertain it day after day. He entertains it once and then kills it. It’s a non option. He slayed it. My mom, bless her soul, my entire life lived on pop corn, coffee and carmel. But then she got diagnosed with cancer. And that changed her diet for good. She gave up coffee, sugar and eats kale, green beans. If you believe your only chance to live is by eating healthy, guess what, you’ll eat healthy. If you believe you might get lucky and you can eat unhealthy and still live. Well then of course you will cheat. We all do. Here’s the third deception to uncover. We are deceived into thinking that we can improve on God’s design. It sure seems like we can improve on God’s design. I mean this sure seems like a pretty old sexual ethic. Do we really need to listen to this stuff? Isn’t there a way we can update this to be more compatible with the modern moral appetite. It sure seems like if we obeyed to the letter of the law here, that obeying God isn’t worth it. I’m not sure God is really worth all the suffering involved in denying myself. It doesn’t seem like he is. But here’s the truth. Nothing in this worth more than the smile of God. Do you see that Joseph trusts God’s design. My master doesn’t deal with anything in the house anymore. The only thing he cares about is his food, and he’s kept nothing back from me except you because you are his wife.” In other words, he says, “There is a rightness about sexual intimacy staying in the bed of a husband and wife, and I understand it.” That’s the way it’s designed and who am I to question God’s design. Oh, come on Joseph. What’s your problem? Do we really need to be so principled about all this stuff? Isn’t there a way we can update your religion to be more compatible with the modern moral appetite. It may seem like sexual freedom and God are compatible. Sexual sin and God are not compatible. There are not many ways to build spiritual intimacy with God and others. There is one way and it is the only way. Do you hear it in Joseph’s voice, “How could I do this great evil and sin against God? I love the smile of God so much…how could I ever do anything to dismiss his gaze.” You want to know what’s way, way, way better than any sexual experience? Closeness with God. Now you want to know why this last point is so important? Because you can appreciate your own weakness and even fear the hook to some degree, but when the right opportunity comes you’re still a goner. Because you are only motivated by not doing something in a negative sense. You aren’t motivated by doing something positively. There’s no carrot. Listen, if your only concern is getting caught or spoiling your reputation then you are done. If the only thing that is stopping you from looking at pornography, or having an affair is that you fear consequences or don’t have the opportunity, well, the opportunity is going to come. For Joseph the opportunity came. She comes and she grabs him: “She caught him by his cloak.” But opportunity changed nothing for Joseph, because lack of opportunity isn’t what was preventing him. It was love of God and that doesn’t change when opportunity presents itself. If the only thing that is stopping you is circumstances, then you will fail. No question. Just wait. Potiphar’s wife will find you alone and seize you by the cloak and you are gone. You want to know why? Because you really want her to grab you. You want her to steal you away. And you want to lay the blame on her. It wasn’t my fault. It was her fault, but that’s exactly what you wanted. We may think we merely respond to outward temptations that are presented to us, but the truth is our evil desires are constantly searching out temptations to satisfy our insatiable lusts. When Joseph came to Egypt, he could have said to himself. Sweet, they have a different sexual ethic. Look at all these women throwing themselves at me. I can get used to this. “Hey, spring break! Spring break forever! Joseph was absolutely decisive in his refusal because how could he sin against the God he loved so deeply? The most powerful deterrent to sin will always be love for God. Thomas Chalmers wrote an article that really changed my life. It’s entitled, the expulsive power of a new affection. Most people think self-control works like this. You look in your heart, and you have all these desires, and you say, “These desires are going to get me into trouble? So I must suppress them. Self-control.” That’s not what happens here. Joseph is not looking inside to suppress his desire for her. He’s looking outside to enhance his desire for God. He was satisfied in Jesus. And because he was satisfied, he could respond from a position of great strength. What does he say? What is his ultimate argument against doing this? He says, “This is a sin against God.” The smile of God upon me is the most precious thing in the world. How could I jeopardize that? A Final Word on Forgiveness. Now, in a room this size, there is undoubtedly a lot of guilt. I haven’t been like Joseph. I’m more like Potiphar’s wife than Joseph. Listen, this is the glory of the gospel. What makes you righteous is not your sexual purity. What makes your righteous is Jesus Christ. And accepting his righteousness will cause your soul to leap to such heights, it will cast your eyes to heaven and catch the gaze of Christ, such that you will live a sexually pure life. Joseph was not perfect and he certainly would have failed and asked God for forgiveness. We know that. But we see a man who, overall as a whole, was victorious because he was so enthralled with the beauty of God. So no matter how many times you’ve failed, messed up, disappointed someone, there is forgiveness in the cross of Jesus Christ. You may have to deal with the consequences of your choices for the rest of your life, true enough. But you are forgiven. You can receive the smile of God upon your life not because of your righteousness, but because of HIS righteousness given to you. So I want to pray a gospel pray that applies to everyone in this room who wants to follow Jesus Christ. If you are a believer, it applies to you. If you are an unbeliever who wants to become a believer it applies to you.
COMMENT:I’ve never been a fan of polls.I find them to be very unhelpful for democracy. Actually they’re worse than that. Tthey deeply undermine democracy. They reduce the competition of ideas and beliefs and principles to a ranking game without analysis or cogent thought. They are lazy journalism which is why they are supported by media outlets. It’s easier to write about someone’s popularity and how it has plunged or rocketed than it is to investigate the policies that person represents. They have no context and so they mislead.Parties enjoying a high poll number can see their supporters become complacent. Their opponents can be convinced to give up because what’s the point? Parties riding high can attract votes simply because of a human desire to be on the side of the winners. So as everyone always says. There’s only 1 poll that matters so let’s just have that one. Give the world some mystery. Let’s find out on the night of September the 19th.Meanwhile, last Sunday I had brunch with a respected QC. The conversation naturally truned to the globe and Covid. He said that he regrets Covid’s rise because it detracts from the real crisis facing humanity which is climate change. So I asked him what sort of crisis that might look like.He said that the first impact of climate change on humanity will not be from the climate changing but from humans fighting each other. As a lawyer he is already seeing businesses preparing to minimise their exposure. To move the liabilities.Insurers wanting to increase premiums or refuse insurance. He’s seeing developers preparing briefs in case developments are flooded or profits diminished by droughts that should have been expected by regulatory authorities.Activists looking to sue the super polluters. He said it doesn’t matter if you believe in climate change or not, this will happen.Meanwhile he has seen little concrete change of behaviour or energy use that will prevent it growing in importance. So while Covid has distracted us from the looming challengers there’s no way they’ve gone away. And with many economises struggling the carbon fires that provide the energy to grow are being ramped back up.
Making a career change at 50 isn't something you should do on a whim. It takes planning and savvy networking to create the right encore career in the non-profit sector. Our guest on this podcast, Betsy Werley, of Encore.org, made such a transition to an encore career to the not-for-profit world herself after a successful business career. And she's helped many people make smart transitions to second careers. We discuss with Betsy: What led her to pursue an encore career in the non-profit sector Why the missions of The Transition Network and Encore.org attracted her What the transition was like coming from the corporate arena into the non-profit world The benefits - and challenges - of second act careers How volunteering helps pave the way The biggest obstacle many people face in landing the right non-profit role Her advice for people considering a move into a non-profit encore career What resources people should tap into when considering a career in the non-profit sector Betsy joins us from New York City. _____________________________________ Bio Betsy Werley is Encore.org’s Director, Network Expansion. She has dedicated this phase of her career to building the encore movement and making later life a time of opportunity and contribution. Betsy moved to the nonprofit sector in 2005, as The Transition Network’s first Executive Director. She led that organization through a growth phase from one chapter to 12. Her encore transition was profiled in Marc Freedman’s The Big Shift and Kerry Hannon’s What’s Next? In her Transition Network role, she was a founding member of Coming of Age New York City and the Encore Network Steering Committee. Betsy joined Encore.org in 2013 as an Innovation Fellow, expanding connections between Encore.org and on-the-ground programs in the US and around the world. Betsy spent the first 26 years of her career as a corporate lawyer and a business executive at JPMorgan Chase. She served as a long-time board member and President of the Financial Women’s Association, and in 2002, launched a mentoring program for Baruch College undergraduate women business majors. In 2017 she received Baruch’s Community Partner Award for her leadership of that program. Betsy has also been honored as the 2019 recipient of the PSS Impact Award for Leadership in Positive Aging. Betsy is frequently quoted by the media and invited to speak on issues related to older adults as assets in society. _______________________________________ Wise Quotes On Networking "I think people should always be aware - and people should always think life is long and thee people around me now are people with whom I want to maintain a positive relationship with. And to know that at some point they would think of you if they are looking for something - and you would think of them. And sometimes, I think people don't realize how big a network they have already. So your dentist is in your network. Your doorman is in your network. That guy who sells you your car is in your network. So with that specific message of 'Here's what I'm looking for', those are all networks that you can tap. So I think one challenge for a lot of people is that they are shy about leveraging their networks and saying to people, just for the heck of it,'I hear something, I wonder if you have any advice for me. So really talking to people and learning how to leverage the networks that they actually have. It's pretty diverse." On Volunteering "You can certainly start out getting involved in volunteering in Board work while you are continuing to do your day job. In fact, I strongly recommend that to anyone I talk to as they're looking ahead at a future career in the non-profit sector - so they can make connections. Tthey can build credibility, they can learn what they like and what they don't like. And that will stand them in good stead at a time when perhaps they can afford to transition to the non...

There are some myths floating around for years about your hand and shoe size for example, fellas, that might just be false advertising...or about "good" boot-knocking has to last a long time (guess who says it's a myth that it DOESN'T?) They weren't delicate, but it was ridiculously funny.

Last time on Life of the Law we presented Unequal Protection - Part 1, the story of Warren McCleskey’s unsuccessful appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. McCleskey argued that his death sentence by the state of Georgia had been prejudiced by the color of skin and that he had not been given equal protection under the law as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. Walking into the prison, I was the first one. I walked in and his lawyers were walking toward me. I was looking at them and I said, 'What’s wrong?' They said, Tthey denied him.' And I just dropped to the floor. Just screaming and crying and like, they didn’t even take time to think this through. They really gonna kill my dad. -- Carla McCleskey This week, we present Part 2 of Sarah Marshall’s report on Warren’s McCleskey’s life after the Supreme Court ruling and his execution on September 25, 1991 by the state of Georgia.
