We're back with another Recruit Reflection, and we're especially excited about this one because it's the first time we're featuring someone who went through the recruiting process but ultimately decided to step away from gymnastics to focus on academics. This week, we're joined by Leah Fontaine, a member of the Class of 2025 from Capital Gymnastics. Fontaine was a Level 10 gymnast for six years and spent time on the elite track during her younger years. She had dreamed of competing in college gymnastics for as long as she could remember and took six official visits when the recruiting period began. However, around that time, she began dealing with an ankle injury and faced the challenge of recovering while maintaining the interest of college coaches. After much reflection, she made the difficult decision to walk away from the sport to focus on her future. Georgetown University was one of the schools Fontaine had been interested in, although it doesn't have a gymnastics program. She was only able to consider it seriously after stepping away from gymnastics. Since leaving club gymnastics, she has embraced new opportunities — including starting a nonprofit organization and participating in high school gymnastics during her senior year. Olas de frío y calor elevan muertes por problemas cardiovascularesPara hablar de este tema nos acompañó el Dr. Carlos Ponte, Cardiólogo. Miembro de la Junta Directiva de la Sociedad Venezolana de Cardiología.Las olas de frío y de calor disparan el riesgo de muerte en las personas con Problemas Cardiovasculares, Ictus, Insuficiencia Cardíaca y #Arritmias, según una investigación publicada en Circulation, la revista de la Asociación Americana del Corazón.El estudio recuerda que, desde la década de 1960, las tasas de mortalidad cardiovascular se han reducido mucho gracias a que se han identificado y abordado los factores de riesgo individuales como el tabaco, la inactividad física, la diabetes tipo 2 o la hipertensión arterial.Por cada 1.000 muertes cardiovasculares, descubrieron que: los días de calor extremo supusieron 2,2 muertes adicionales; que los días de frío extremo representaban 9,1 muertes adicionales; y el mayor número de muertes adicionales tuvo lugar en las personas con insuficiencia cardiaca (2,6 muertes adicionales en días de calor extremo y 12,8 en días de frío extremo).Una de las claves para evitar que el calor nos afecte es hidratarse bien, incluso aunque no se tenga sed. Debemos hacerlo varias veces al día. En caso contrario podemos sufrir una sensación de cansancio, leves mareos, cifras bajas de presión arterial o taquicardia, seguido de contracturas musculares o calambres, que son los síntomas de la deshidratación. Ante la aparición de cualquiera de estos síntomas, la primera recomendación de los especialistas es hidratarse.

We're continuing Season 3 of our Recruit Reflection series with Anika Most, a rising sophomore and member of Kent State's 2025 regular season MAC championship team. Anika always dreamed of becoming a Division I gymnast, but her recruiting journey wasn't easy. She faced a lot of rejection early on because she was a bit behind skill-wise at the time. Still, she never gave up. She kept working hard in the gym, held down two jobs to pay for training, and stayed persistent with coaches — eventually finding her home at Kent State. Anika is living proof that hard work and determination really do pay off. Olas potentes y constantes rompen en la playa de arena negra del valle de Pololū, una cala remota en la costa norte de la isla de Hawái. Rodeada de acantilados verdes y rocas volcánicas, esta escena sonora natural, grabada en audio espacial, ofrece un entorno inmersivo perfecto para dormir, concentrarse o relajarse.

Una familia en el pueblo de Magdala debe de confrontar situaciones difíciles. La esperanza está en en el hijo con un talento especial que debe abandonar el pueblo, alcanzar el éxito, y sacar a la familia del hoyo en que están. En el otro lado del mudo, la producción de una película tiene problemas económicos, pero un negocito podría salvar todo y generar dinero. Ambas historias se entrelazan en la cinta de Horacio Alcalá, Sobre las Olas.Entre los clichés clásicos del cine mexicano tenemos o las historias de whitexicans chilangos, o los pueblos mágicos en donde el folclor muestra historias hasta por debajo de las piedras. En el caso de Sobre las Olas conocemos la comunidad de Magdala, que por su cercanía con la luna, tiene la peculiaridad de que las personas que vienen de fuera pierdan sus capacidades cognitivas y tomen decisiones cuestionables. En este lugar, la vida en el rancho, sigue la cotidianidad, por lo que cuando Ángel (Eugenio Rubio), la joven promesa, es apoyada para salir del lugar para que se desarrolle como músico, se tiene un evento especial. El problema de la cinta es que jamás vemos el talento, ni porqué su familia es capaz de endeudarse para apoyarlo, ya que es incapaz de hilar dos notas musicales sin que le den ataques de algo que nadie sabe qué es. Ante las deudas, su padre debe fingir su muerte, pero a su madre Gloria Zamora (Ángeles Cruz), no le importa ya que "Dios proveerá". Poco sabría ella que por azares del destino llegaría un extranjero al lugar, con dinero que estafó a alguien más, y  las circunstancias harían qeu con ese dinero ella se convertiría en nueva rica, quien despirlarrará, se convertirá en "la emperatriz de Magdala", y hasta tendrá ceremonia de coronación en el evento más importante del pueblo, en La Noche de las Barrigas, en donde los mundos se entrelazan, los muertos regresan y todo se perdona. La cinta padece de cosas similares a Abracadáver al ser barroca en ejecución y planteamiento, mezclando demasiados elementos aderezados con un pseudo realismo pseudo mágico vistoso pero poco sustancioso. Los conflictos están ahí, pero sus consecuencias y desarrollos se olvidan. ¿El hijo con talento? Al final es solo otro personaje de fondo. ¿La producción de una cinta que hace que tres personas salgan de España rumbo a un pueblo mágico perdido en México? Pretexto para poder hablar de dinero. ¿Las personalidades de los personajes? Desdibujadas y son más cartones desechables a pesar de tener potencial para desarrollos densos. ¿Estética visual? Muy bonita, eso que ni qué, pero temina siendo más betún que pastel, con harta azúcar, y listo para una audiencia diabética. ¿Qué es lo que los realizadores querían contar con la historia? Es una gran pregunta ya que no se termina de mostrar. Nuestra narradora, una Trinidad Zamora (Alejandra Herrera) es incapaz de explicarnos y solo está ahí para dar exposición al principio y al final para ser el instrumento mágico que creará una pócima para que los habitantes del pueblo olviden lo que pasó. Algo, que como el amigo Ernesto Diezmartínez dijo en sus comentarios, es deseado por la audiencia, para olvidar lo que vió en pantalla. La cinta se exhibirá este martes 10 de junio en Cinépolis VIP Midtown, el miércoles en el Cineforo y el viernes 13 en el Museo Cabañas, en le Patio de los Naranjos, acá en el Festival Internacional de cine en Guadalajara.

We're continuing Season 3 of our Recruit Reflection series with Heather Parker, a redshirt sophomore at Central Michigan University who began her college career at the University of Georgia. One of the top athletes in the class of 2023, Parker suffered an injury during her freshman season that led her to reevaluate her path. She ultimately transferred and found her home at CMU, where she recently wrapped up the season as a Mid-American Conference team champion.Our goal with this series is to bring more transparency to the recruiting process and highlight the variety of paths and outcomes student-athletes experience. With June 15 just around the corner, the class of 2027 will soon be able to speak with college coaches. We hope this series sheds light on the highs and lows of the journey and provides reassurance to those feeling uncertain about what lies ahead. Through these athletes' stories, you'll see that everyone ends up where they're meant to be—regardless of the obstacles they faced. Avery Neff just wrapped up her freshman season with the Utes, where she earned four All-American honors and was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. Avery also won the Big 12 title on beam and was a regional champion in the all-around and on vault. She accomplished all of this despite suffering two serious ankle sprains in the third week of the season.
