Damon also worked with the Coalition of Communities of Color, managing communications for Portland's successful 2022 city government reform measure and organizing record-breaking fundraising events to support racial justice efforts. They live in East Portland near Powell Butte and enjoys hiking, cycling, weightlifting, cooking, and performing in drag. Lina Blount highlights the role of interconnectedness and reciprocity in climate justice: “Our liberation is bound up in each other's, especially in climate work, because it's how ecosystems work.” Lina Blount is an organizer, trainer, and nonviolent action strategist who has been involved in environmental justice campaigns in the Philadelphia area for over fifteen years. She currently serves as the Director of Strategy and Partnerships with the Earth Quaker Action Team. Lina has previously worked with the Divestment Student Network and has extensive experience as a canvas director and anti-fracking organizer in Pennsylvania. She identifies as a Quaker and considers the Earth Quaker Action Team, her primary spiritual community. Andrew Schwartz, a passionate advocate for environmental and climate justice, currently holds the esteemed Director of Sustainability and Global Affairs position at the Center for Earth Ethics. Under his leadership, the Center has pioneered initiatives like the 2021 Faith + Food Coalition Dialogues and the 2022 Values, Culture, and Spirituality Consultation Series, aligned with the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. These programs have been instrumental in uniting global voices to champion environmental causes. With almost ten years under his belt, Andrew has collaborated with community torchbearers and governmental figures, forging multilateral alliances and bolstering environmental movements. His current role as the leader of the Climate Working Group for the UN Multi-faith Advisory Council further underscores his commitment to the cause.Before his tenure at CEE, Andrew's journey saw him at the helm of Bend 2030, a diverse coalition in Bend, Oregon. He also co-directed the Micah Challenge USA, striving to eradicate extreme poverty, and managed the Climate Reality Project, an initiative by Al Gore to shape pivotal environmental policies on climate change.A proud alumnus of Pacific Lutheran University and Union Theological Seminary, Andrew's fervor for environmental advocacy was ignited during his time at Union. This week we're replaying a classic episode where your hosts Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey interview Gilion Dumas of Dumas & Vaughn, LLC (https://dumasandvaughn.com/).   Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here to Rate and Review   Episode Details: Gilion Dumas, a partner at Dumas & Vaughn, LLC in Portland, Oregon, and an experienced litigator in child sexual abuse cases, explains how she successfully represented former Boy Scout Kerry Lewis, who was sexually abused by an adult Boy Scout volunteer multiple times in the early 1980s. From 1982 to 1984, Kerry was mentored by Timur Dykes, who admitted to a Bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints -- the organization that sponsored Kerry's Boy Scout troop -- that he had abused 17 boys before January 1983. Despite this admission, the church, the Boy Scouts of America organization, and the Portland-based Cascade Pacific Council allowed Dykes to remain involved in the organization and to work directly with children, failing to notify the parents of Boy Scouts, like Kerry, who unfortunately became another abuse victim following Dykes' admission. Through a groundbreaking use of the Boy Scouts of America's secret "perversion files" containing allegations of sex abuse within the organization, trial lawyer Gilion Dumas and her legal team were able to hold the Boy Scouts of America and local Cascade Pacific Counsel responsible for the abuse Kerry, who was 38 at the time of trial, suffered as a boy.  In 2010, a Multnomah, Oregon jury awarded $1.4 million in non-economic damages, assigning 60% of the negligence to the Boy Scouts of America, 15% to the Cascade Pacific Council, and 25% to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which settled before the trial began. In a separate six-week trial, a jury returned a punitive damages award of an additional $18.5 million against the Boy Scouts of America.  View/Download Trial Documents   Guest Bio: Gilion Dumas Gilion Dumas is a partner at Dumas & Vaughn, LLC in Portland, Oregon. She has substantial litigation experience, most recently representing survivors of child sexual abuse and sexual assault. She is known for her diligent advocacy and compassion for her clients, bringing legal savvy, clear communication, and common sense to the stressful and often confusing experience of civil litigation. Gilion knows her way around the courtroom, having tried many cases, both on her own and as “second chair.” She obtained a judgment of over $4.5 million for a young Oregon woman who was sexually molested as a child. She was also one of the trial attorneys in the 2010 child sexual abuse trial in Portland against the Boy Scouts that resulted in a $19.9 million verdict for the plaintiff.  Gilion is currently involved in dozens of claims on the West Coast and around the country against schools, churches, and youth-serving organizations that allowed children to be abused by employees or volunteers. She and her law partner Ashley Vaughn represent many alumni of Catlin Gabel, an elite private school in Portland, for claims of abuse dating back to the 1960s; over 60 men with claims in the Boy Scouts' bankruptcy; 12 men with claims for abuse in the Assemblies of God Royal Ranger program; and several cases involving adult women sexually assaulted by medical professionals.  Gilion graduated cum laude from Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, where she was an editor on the law review.  She is an active member of the state and federal bars in Oregon, Washington, California, and Idaho. She recently served on the Executive Committee of the Oregon State Bar's Litigation Section, is a former Chair of the Oregon State Bar's Business Litigation Section, and is a former President of the Oregon Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. This week, your hosts Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey interview Gilion Dumas (https://dumasandvaughn.com/).    Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here To Rate and Review   Episode Details: Gilion Dumas, a partner at Dumas & Vaughn, LLC in Portland, Oregon and an experienced litigator in child sexual abuse cases, explains how she successfully represented former Boy Scout Kerry Lewis, who was sexually abused by an adult Boy Scout volunteer multiple times in the early 1980s. From 1982 to 1984, Kerry was mentored by Timur Dykes, who admitted to a Bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints -- the organization that sponsored Kerry's Boy Scout troop -- that he had abused 17 boys before January 1983. Despite this admission, the church, the Boy Scouts of America organization and the Portland-based Cascade Pacific Council allowed Dykes to remain involved in the organization and to work directly with children, failing to notify the parents of Boy Scouts, like Kerry, who unfortunately became another abuse victim following Dykes' admission. Through a groundbreaking use of the Boy Scouts of America's secret "perversion files" containing allegations of sex abuse within the organization, trial lawyer Gilion Dumas and her legal team were able to hold the Boy Scouts of America and local Cascade Pacific Counsel responsible for the abuse Kerry, who was 38 at the time of trial, suffered as a boy.  In 2010, a Multnomah, Oregon jury awarded $1.4 million in non-economic damages, assigning 60% of the negligence to the Boy Scouts of America, 15% to the Cascade Pacific Council and 25% to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, which settled before the trial began. She has substantial litigation experience, most recently representing survivors of child sexual abuse and sexual assault. She is known for her diligent advocacy and compassion for her clients, bringing legal savvy, clear communication, and common sense to the stressful and often confusing experience of civil litigation. Gilion knows her way around the courtroom, having tried many cases, both on her own and as “second chair.” She obtained a judgment of over $4.5 million for a young Oregon woman who was sexually molested as a child. She was also one of the trial attorneys in the 2010 child sexual abuse trial in Portland against the Boy Scouts that resulted in a $19.9 million verdict for the plaintiff.  Gilion is currently involved in dozens of claims on the West Coast and around the country against schools, churches, and youth serving organizations that allowed children to be abused by employees or volunteers. She and her law partner Ashley Vaughn represent many alumni of Catlin Gabel, an elite private school in Portland, for claims of abuse dating back to the 1960s; over 60 men with claims in the Boy Scouts' bankruptcy; 12 men with claims for abuse in the Assemblies of God Royal Ranger program; and several cases involving adult women sexually assaulted by medical professionals.  Gilion graduated cum laude from Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, where she was an editor on the law review.  She is an active member of the state and federal bars in Oregon, Washington, California, and Idaho. This year marks the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in the United States. As we have seen over the past century and in even in recent months, many battles have been and remain to be fought to guarantee full and equitable access to the ballot. Women showed heroism and courage fighting in the front lines for suffrage a century ago, and Black, Indigenous, and people of color have continued to lead the fight since that time to gain equitable voting rights for all. Their actions serve as an example for what must still be done to secure voting rights.In collaboration with the Oregon Historical Society and in honor of this important anniversary, the Oregon Chapter of the Federal Bar Association is pleased to share with you a series of podcasts focused on the historical and ongoing fight for the universal and meaningful right to vote. On this unique episode of the Cameron-Brooks podcast, we interview an alumni about his journey with multiple sclerosis and his positive mindset in handling adversity. Kevin Byrne, a former Army Apache Helicopter Pilot, who transitioned through the Cameron-Brooks program in 2000, recently volunteered to be a guest on our podcast.  Kevin has a heroic story to tell.  This podcast is unlike any other we have done in 100+ episodes. At first, I thought we were going to discuss Kevin's career and transition and maybe he did as well.  However, as I studied his LinkedIn profile, I noticed something particular about his career.  He has not been working for the last 3 years.  As Kevin says, he is twice retired.  First in 2000, he medically retired from the Army due to Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis and again in 2017 due to the effects of the debilitating disease. In this podcast, Kevin tells his story on continually adapting to his life situation and handling adversity.  He says, "This disease will never stop and never quit, so neither will I."  With this motto, he started a non-profit "Never Stop, Never Quit" to to raise money for larger/national organizations intent on finding a cure for, and managing the devastating effects of, multiple sclerosis. Prior to his "second" retirement, Kevin worked in Corporate America for 17 years in a variety of procurement and supply chain roles and organizations.  During this time, he also served on various non-profit boards such as the Oregon Chapter of National Multiple Sclerosis Society and West Point Society of Oregon.  Most significantly, he started blogging as an outlet to express emotions battling this disease.  He then turned those blogs into writing books and has written 5 books to include My MS and E which he wrote with his daughter, Eleanor.  All proceeds from his books support the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. From Kevin's website, here are his harsh realities: • There is nothing on the market today with the ability to cure my multiple sclerosis or send it into remission. • It is debatable whether or not my current medications are slowing the progression of my MS, giving me an extra year when, before, I only had a month. • There is no known way to recover function I have lost, or will lose, due to the damaging effects of my MS. • There is no way to predict, identify, or isolate early-onset MS, and eradicate the disease before it affects the next generation. • Not yet… Overcoming those realities are our dreams; the only possibilities for realization come in the form of research and development. Our guest today shares with us her personal story of how she did abandon the titanic and forged for herself a successful path to professional sanity. Kathleen M. Brown, MD, obtained her medical degree from the Eastern Virginia School of Medicine and practiced dermatology and internal medicine for several years in Maryland.  In 1997, she and her family moved to the coast of Oregon to join a multi-specialty group of which she was a partner in the group until mid-2011.  This group was a good fit but the administrative and financial burdens of the system were increasingly taking a toll on her enjoyment of medicine. After passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, she saw that continuing to stay within an insurance-contracted system would make her style of medical practice impossible.  In July, 2011, with help from her husband, Jack, she opened a direct pay Dermatology practice with a transparent fee schedule.  Within a month of opening she had a full schedule and a restored sense of professional satisfaction. Prior to the PSU position he taught 14 years at George Fox University, a small private liberal arts college in Newberg, Oregon and 23 years teaching in area public high schools. Mr. Vandehey received his Bachelors of Art and Bachelors of Music from the University of Washington, and a Masters of Teaching Music at Portland State University. Mr. Vandehey is a Past-President of the Oregon Band Directors Association and serves as chairman of the Adjudication Training Board of OBDA. He served for two years as the Band Liaison to the Oregon Schools Activity Association. He has served twice on the Oregon Music Education Association’s Board as Band Chair and served on the OMEA Executive board as President in 2005-2006. In 1993 Mr. Vandehey was the State, Regional and National recipient of the ASBDA- Stanbury Award for Outstanding Young Band Director. In 2000 he was inducted into the Band World Legion of Honor by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. Also in 2000 he was named one of Oregon’s top ten Music Educators by the Oregon Music Educators Association in the Teaching Music Magazine. In 2002 Mr. Vandehey received the Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association. He is a founding member of the Oregon Chapter of Phi Beta Mu, and in 2006 was inducted into the Northwest Bandmaster’s Association. Mr. Vandehey was named the Oregon’s Outstanding Music Educator in 2010 by the Oregon Music Educators Association. Mr. Vandehey is married to Kristin, his wife of 40 years and they have two daughters, both of whom are educators.

Brian Cone has been an automotive enthusiast since his grandfather gave him three model cars, including a 1958 Edsel, at the age of three. He was a Steering Committee Member of the Portland Art Museum’s Allure of the Automobile-Cars in the Park show for BMW. He is the Events Coordinator for the PDX Mini Club, Logistics Manager for the Oregon Festival of Cars and Events Coordinator for the BMW CCA Oregon Chapter. Brian is an example of how being an active club member and helping create events for automotive enthusiasts is a great way to enjoy the camaraderie of fellow car lovers. Brian is also the BMW Corral coordinator for this weekend’s Forest Grove Concours taking place at the Pacific University campus east of Portland, Oregon.

auGi is how he spells his name, it's not a typo, and yes, I believe he is cool enough to not only pull off one name but spell it however he wants. auGi is a man of many talents… Dare I say a Renaissance man. He's a musician, a comedian, a graphic artist, a writer, a performer, he’s traveled the world and he's one helluva storyteller. He has written and performed his own one-man show, called SexyNurd, about his life’s desire to be a rock star commingled with his experience with MS.  auGi doesn't have MS but his experience runs deep as his mom lived with it for 34 years and it is in her memory that he brings all his amazingly wonderful talents to the MS cause.  auGi is the Vice President of Marketing and Events for the Oregon Chapter of the MS Society. As you’ll hear, he literally changed his career and his life’s direction because he doesn’t want others to suffer with MS like his mom did.
