The conversation takes a turn into Edward's use of dreams and work have been a method of disconnecting from his present situation and being. We resolve with a wonderful breakthrough as Edward get's a new perspective on where he is in life. Our Deep Dive this week pairs nicely with our check in. Jason relates his story about his employment history. His views determined decisions about staying where he was, finding a new job, and what jobs to pick. The discussion evolves into how to know if work is working for you. We talk about the different thoughts and boundaries we place and perceptions we have about where we have worked and around Jobs in general. Our Off the Rails this week is based around the New Year's traditions from other countries. Most cultures celebrate New Year's. Each have customs different than our own. We discuss some of these customs and our familiarity with them. Some will seem funny; others will arouse our curiosity.
Our Check-In this week is our Season Finale. Jason and Edward sit down and share the highlights of what made this season special for them. This is the episode when we hear about favorite episodes, learning experiences, growth recaps, special moments, and of course plans and goals for next season. Join us as we celebrate three years of Stumbling Through Enlightenment! Our Deep Dive this week is also a special one. A shout out and encouragement to those who share their trauma and shame in a healthy way to heal their lives. Talking about what has happened in our past is fundamental in the healing process. Jason and Edward discuss sharing their experiences in the podcast, support groups, and in therapy. Each member of our podcast team has found healing in the processes that we share. Our number one past episode is based on the sharing of shame around what has happened to us. Jason and Edward speak about the importance of processing their pasts and the benefits that come along with it.
Edward shares with us more changes in his life and how he is experiencing them. Edward starts off speaking about taking on a temporary roommate whom he has known for several years. Edward discusses the change in his home environment and the change in the relationship with this person. Though a good space for growth, Edward is finding it challenging dealing with change in so many areas of his life. Jason and Edward also discuss the closing of the church where Edward has played hand bells on and off since high school, and the work he is doing with overcoming his religious trauma. Edward admits that the amount of change hasn't been bad, but there is a certain feeling of being frozen due to all the moving parts. Our Deep Dive today focuses on the differences between trauma responses and intuition. While we work on ourselves and throughout our healing, we often come into the realization that our intuition can be a useful tool. We also start to realize that some of our feelings are just our trauma revisiting us. How do we tell the difference? Jason and Edward discuss the key differences between trauma responses and intuition. The discussion includes signs and even a checklist style identification system to figure this out.
Jason leads us off this week with a discussion about leaving a legacy. For Jason the podcast has been many things within his mental health journey. One of the parts that has recently come into his experience is that this podcast is part of a legacy to his family. Jason doesn't speak much with his children about the depths of his abuse. Jason was not able to understand what happened from his parents without more abuse. Jason has also been working on writing down some of the things that happened to him and how he has dealt with them over the years. Jason and Edward discuss how important this podcast has been to him as way for his children to learn about his past if they ever choose. After he's gone this work will stand as a reminder of how much he loves them and what his journey was like. Our Deep Dive this week is all about Taurus. Our favorite bull is full of nurturing. Taurus is known for their levelheaded nature. In this monthly discussion of our Zodiac signs, we explore the world of Taurus and what it means to have one in our lives. Slow to anger, stubborn, nurturing, and a home builder are terms that many of us connect to taurus. They are also incredibly intuitive and creative, and those are just some of the good qualities. Join us as we deep dive into what makes a Taurus one of the most loveable signs of the Zodiac.
Jason shares with us some parental growth this week. His eldest son has been fired from his job for stealing. A perfect storm of circumstances come together to create the perfect environment for his son to steal from his job. Jason shares with us the circumstances, but also how he and Jessica are working through the parenting process. Jason and Edward also share some of their own experience from being that age. Our Deep Dive this week is all about the step by step process of how to grow towards recovery from trauma. The steps we discuss are from a book called The Origins of You: How Breaking Family Patterns Can Liberate the Way We Live and Love by Vienna Pharaon. Each step breaks down the much bigger task of working into a healthy state from a life shaped by our trauma. The task of working through trauma can be filled with pitfalls and seem overwhelming. This book and the steps we discuss can break that down into workable chunks for a healthier life, more in line with our true selves.
We start our episode with Edward processing news that he received that morning about one of his highest needs clients has passed away the day before. Edward and Jason discuss the loss and the combination of relief and grief that these situations bring up. Jason starts off on a tangent the stops himself, but Edward picks it up due to his own frustration with the care system in his area. This takes a turn as Edward and Jason compare their experiences in the Human services field as well as the differences in how the many companies, they have worked for handle client hospitalizations. Our Deep Dive this week comes from trigger work Edward was doing, that prompted him to research the effects of experiencing gaslighting as children. In addition to discussing the effects of being gaslit as a child Edward and Jason go through a list of common phrases and situations that they both experienced as children. Sharing their own experiences, Edward and Jason break down some of these common forms of gaslighting into categories of which parent they received them from, if there were intentional(used with the specific intent of manipulation), unintentional (used due to a trauma response from their own parent's experiences), and cultural norm ( used due to cultural views from the time period they grew up in or their parents grew up in. ) This in depth look addresses what growing up with parents that gaslit was like and what the challenges have been in their adult lives moving through and healing.
Jason starts us off this week with some news about an ongoing trauma. His wife Jessica is leaving for a weekend and Jason shares with us what working up to this event looks like. Jason discusses some of the coping skills he is building around the weekend, but also how he is using desensitizing practices to prepare himself. Jason and Edward discuss the practices and also how to use them in more day to day endeavors. Our Deep Dive this week finds us speaking with Deb Burk again. This week she tells us more about Tellington Ttouch which she practices. She shares with us particulars about the therapy including some of its history and why and how it is used. Deb also shares with us some amazing stories about using this beautiful healing modality. To get in touch with Deb you can email her at Da.Burk@roadrunner.com, or on Facebook Deb Burk TTouch Maine Animal Connections.
This week Edward starts talking about a realization that clicked for him about some of his behavior. Growing up with undiagnosed ADHD, Edward was often described as being lazy by teachers and even his parents. To rectify this Edward worked even harder to the point of exhaustion. In the discussion Edward realizes that he takes so much on, especially at work but even in home life, because he still carries the viewpoint that if he isn't accomplishing specific things, he's being lazy. The discussion continues with talk about deprograming the inner voice and separating himself from the identity that he was given as a child. Our Deep Dive this week is part of a larger conversation. In this part of the conversation Jason and Edward discuss being genuine in the face of trauma and mental health challenges. The discussion focusses on what it looks like to come out as your authentic self and your limitations after people have seen your trauma self. They talk about tools that keep us within our trauma and disfunction.
We catch up with Jason about the light levels, now that we have past the longest night. Jason relays to us that he is feeling a little better, but also has hope due to a meme about how many days it will be until it is light at 7:30pm. Jason and Edward discuss Jason's Christmas, including his son's gift of a car. Jason also laments the end of hunting season as it was something that he was doing regularly and now is looking for an activity to take its place. Our Deep Dive this week is about deconstruction, which has become a buzz word recently. Edward and Jason go through the basics of deconstruction, including using it within the subject of religion. Edward stumbled upon the philosophy when looking into religious trauma. This raises the question: Is there room for critical thinking in religion?
This week we are kicking off a celebration of He-Man for the 40th anniversary! And of course we had to start with a review of the Dolph Lundgren/Frank Langella starring movie that finally brought everyone's favorite toys to life! This movie was a bomb and was panned but we explore what works and what doesn't as we try to find the good in He-Man! Get ready for all the Eternia you can handle! By the power of Greyskull!! Our Deep Dive of Skeletor: https://youtu.be/wXugwTuWsFQ
This week we start out with Edward sharing how his Ebay sales have dropped off significantly. Edward runs a small reselling business and finds that this 4th quarter, which should be booming, is actually coming up flat. Edward shares how in the groups and communities he is not the only one that is experiencing this, yet he still finds it surprising. Edward and Jason discuss how along with some frustration there is actually a little relief as Edward is turning his mind towards other things as well as struggling in some areas. Our Deep Dive this week takes a look at ways selfishness can be healthy. Jason starts us off with a list that he and Edward discuss. On the list are different ways that someone can be selfish in a healthy way.

His wife Karen is an ordained minister and chaplain educator. More information about Bruce Miller's work can be found at: Bruce Miller's I-Thou website: ithou.com.
Edward starts off this week's episode with the story of anxiety over a new job offer. After some work around anxiety and some PTSD, Edward decides to take a job as an Executive Chef. Once he does however, he is thrown into another bout of panic attacks and anxiety that he doesn't seem to be able to work through. Jason provides us with some much-needed clarity. It appears what Edward is experiencing is core trauma response. Jason then fills us in on what we can do when faced with this type of anxiety and panic. Our Deep Dive discussion this week revolves around the relationship between trauma and being an introvert or extrovert. Edward asks the question of if there is any relationship to childhood trauma and being one of the two as an adult. This prompts a conversation of sharing experiences and looking deeper into why these experiences either made Jason and Edward relaxed or if they frustrated them due to lack of or too much stimulation.

Our Deep Dive is the explanation portion. Knowing our attachment style, was just the first step. In this segment we detail each of the 4 attachment styles, what situations caused them when we were children, and what the attachment styles look like in our adult lives. We both found this subject very interesting and enlightening and are eager to learn more as we grow.

This weeks Check-in comes at a great financial price. Jason starts us out with his story about an unexpected circumstance that cost him more than he had originally thought. Jason talks to us about a product he was having made. Usually, the process to make the product has a small yield for a certain amount of additive. However, the amount of product yielded was far greater than anticipated. Subsequently Jason finds himself having to pay more than he originally bargained for. Jason and Ed talk about the surprise, but also Jason's anxiety around telling his wife. It's a shocking and funny story to start us off. Our Deep Dive this week focuses on Edwards experiences in a sensory deprivation chamber, or a Float Pod. Edward tells us the story of his experiences taking part in this self-care routine. Sensory deprivation chambers were created in the 50s by a Dr. Lilly who surmised that they would make the brain fall asleep. Instead, what he found was that the brain woke up in the same way as it does in a mediative state. Fast forward 70 years and the benefits from floating in Epsom salt (Magnesium Sulfate), with little to no external stimulation, and experiencing a gravity neutral environment, has not only been found to be relaxing, but exceptionally healing.
Jason starts us off with a check in about him dealing with the cold. The darkness and then the cold has made him wonder why he continues to live where he is. Jason identifies that because he moved so often when he was a child, he wanted to make sure that his children don't have to go through that. The situation has left him feeling helpless. Jason and Edward discuss his plans to move once the children are out of school and out of the house. Our Deep Dive this week, delves into the subject of covert incest. Coming from the book “Silently Seduced” by Kenneth M. Adams. Jason read it several years ago, and after three tries Edward has finished reading the book. Jason and Edward discuss their own experiences with one of their parents taking them on as a proverbial partner to get their needs met while making Jason and Edward feel special. Edward discusses in some depth how his mother's behavior towards him has shaped his relationships with women, as well as many other areas of his life. The discussion winds it's way through warning signs as both children and adults as well as some resources and a few things that can be done on your own. Ultimately the work should be done with a therapist as it is a deep trauma.
Welcome back! Our Deep Dive podcast has been put on hold for a season but we're back starting this week with new episodes for our series called Relationships. In this series we will be looking at the life of Jacob and the way God redemptively used his relationships to bring about promise and deliverance for his people. In this episode, Brad, Dan, and Chris give a broad introduction to the Book of Genesis and Jacob the person. What questions did God want to answer for his people coming out of Egypt? In what ways do we relate to Jacob? How might God want to use our sibling relationships for his glory? If you have any questions that you'd like to see us tackle in future episodes, shoot us an email at podcasts@calvary.church and we will make sure to include them!

Jason starts us off this week with some good news. He has bought a new to him car. Jason shares with us the trials and tribulations of the buying process. He and Edward tell stories about other car buying experiences, and Jason talks about his plans and hopes for the future along with the some of the cool features of his current car. Our Deep Dive this week is all about the cost of growth. We don't often think about what it takes to move forward nor what we must leave behind. This episode delves into the grieving process of true growth, as well as some of the struggles of redefining ourselves as who we truly are in comparison to who we have been. Jason and Edward share stories of different degrees of growth, from major existential changes, to changing habits in our lives. The conversation takes a journey through the different stages and how building knowledge of self and our true motivations can lead to a smoother transition.
We start out this week's episode with the last installment of Jason's vacation story. Jason shares with us, not only his anxiety around vacations, but also some of the comical situations he and his wife find themselves in, while in the big city. Jason also speaks about ways he “unplugged” from his job to take this time, and the feeling of filling the well from a much-needed break. Our Deep Dive this week is a conversation with Edward about a recent situation in which he found himself. Though he keeps the specifics vague there is a long history of Edward holding poor boundaries with a “former employer”. Edward talks about how he navigated the situation and found personal benefit, while at the same time avoiding old pitfalls. Jason and Edward talk about best practices when walking the knifes edge of a newer, healthier boundary in an old situation.
In this week's Check-In Edward talks about his continuing journey with his ADHD medication. Edward's high blood pressure has become a major concern, even after switching to a different medication. Edward and his medication provider have decided to temporarily discontinue the use of stimulants at this point, while working with his primary doctor to bring down his blood pressure. In the meantime, Edward relays to us his struggle from the sudden fall out of the medication. This leads us into a conversation between Jason and Edward about the potential dangers of such a change, Edward using his therapist more, and the break down/break through that Edward is dealing with now. We talk about therapists and our individual dealings with them as well as how lucky Edward feels about having found this therapist. Our Deep Dive this week, is all about Now/Not Now thinking. This type of thinking tends to crop up in various cognitive disorders and is really pronounced with ADHD. Edward offers insight into his experience with this type of thought structure, and Jason talks about the struggles of friends and family who live with people in it. We discus ways to work around the idea of being so excited and present in the moment, and completely forgetting or being unaware of the situation after the moment has passed. This is easily seen in object permanence issues, when someone will put something down and completely forget they had it. Also when someone is so excited about a topic of conversation then completely not think of it again until it is brought up.

In this week's episode, we start with Edward sharing with us a very triggered moment. Being caught between two separate events he goes back to a feeling from his childhood of being both too much, yet not enough. His feelings are still a little raw and as he processes them along with the underlying childhood experiences, Jason offers some different perspectives. Edward and Jason speak about different ways to work through the triggers, but also approaching these situations with different outlooks. Our Deep Dive this week is an exploration of a newer outlook on child trauma. Now identified as developmental trauma, it is either an extreme incident or prolonged experience that tends to keep us from maturing in specific areas of our lives. Jason and Edward talk about the root causes of this type of trauma, how to identify it, and of course, some ways to work through it.
We start our episode this week with stories of the changing seasons. Edward shares with us the adventure he had cleaning his car out after the winter. Prompted by Jason he tells of the grossest and greatest things he found and shares a mystery too. Jason explores with us a new interest in the form of Stained Glass. He has not only learned new words but a bit about his own behaviors. We round out the Check-In with a conversation about COVID Vaccinations and homework that was given to Jason by his therapist. Our Deep Dive this week is a very controversial topic right now. We explore what it means to live as a white male in these times. In a world that is angry for so many reasons, we discuss how our privilege gives us the responsibility to frame the conversation in as empathetic a way as possible. We learn how to ask about someone's experience in a way that does not victimize but empowers and invites them to discuss their experiences in a safe environment. We also talk about how to navigate painful areas without negating our own hurts and traumatic experiences.
Our Check-In this week centers around Lorri's loss of her aunt. The loss of any family member is tragic and brings up memories, analyzing of the lessons we learned from the person, and sometimes questions and assessment. With the passing of her aunt, Lorri finds herself not only in grief but also realizing that her generation is now the oldest generation. Jason shares his experiences of the same realization. Together we discuss this along with some of the other memories and feelings that Lorri is going through. Our Deep Dive this week, is all about the book “The Fourth Turning” by William Strauss and Neil Howe. The book, which is introduced to us by Jason, talks about viewing time and history as cyclical rather than linear time. Through this, they have been able to find patterns that not only explain what is going on today but also how we got here. Lead by four Archetype generations, the book goes through each cycle, each lasting between 80 and 100 years, and gives examples from world history and US history. In this week's Off The Rails, we delve into some really strange sex laws. Join us on the humorous adventure across the United States and some bizarre laws around sex. From public fornication of animals to outlawing sex toys.
This week's Check-In starts off with Jason sharing about his experience with a kidney stone. As a trauma survivor who checks out of his body, he describes what he has been going through and how he has been dealing with it. As Lorri and Edward join the discussion and start sharing some of their experiences, Edward shares a story that he has not given a second thought of. Lorri and Jason react to his story with shock at his indifference as he relays a story that he had not identified as trauma. Our Deep Dive delves into behavior. Jason is reading a book called “Behave” by Robert Sapolsky, which takes an in-depth look at the sources of behavior. Far deeper than Nurture VS. Nature, the book tracks behavioral sources down past the chemical level through your heritage and your genes and DNA. This opens a discussion about self-awareness, self-sabotage, and self-judgment around our behaviors. Our Off the Rails this week is brought to you by more funny moments in history. Join us for a history lesson you will not get in school, as we share some pretty funny moments in history.
In our Check-In this week, Lorri shares with us a story that has been brought into focus in her life recently. Lorri tells us about her relationship with a friend from her childhood. Recently this person has passed. Within that relationship, Lorri ended up setting boundaries that caused a great distance between them. She is now dealing with her guilt about the boundaries that she set and her emotions and internal monologue about being a bad person. Our Deep Dive this week, starts with a question from Edward. Through his experience and work, he noticed that many times the consequences he experienced did not fit the behavior or situation. Which begged the question “How did our traumatic upbringing affect the way people parent”. Lorri and Jason being parents share their stories about what it was like parenting with the abuse they had experienced. The Off The Rails that we've all been waiting for! The return of Lorri's Trippy Dreams! In This segment, Lorri tells us her dream that is somewhat recurring but also has some new elements. It starts out with tucking the presidents of our past into bed and reading them a story. Then Bill Clinton shows up and a wild ride unfolds.
Lorri's Back with another Check-in this week. This time she shares with us her Holiday experiences. Lorri explores with us the return of her Christmas spirit and the celebration that took place after years of bad Christmases. We talk about the both/and approach of being aware of the sorrow and feelings that this time of year brought her, but also the feelings of Joy that she found again this year. Our Deep Dive this week is all about the process of learning. We learn for our jobs and sometimes for our passions, but how do we know what we are learning is true? In this time of much misinformation, we discuss helpful hints and processes to keep us informed in a way that does not hinder our growth. We also talk about ways of keeping our minds fresh and in a learning space. This week's Off The Rails features the return of awkward moments with Lorri. We talk about experiences of getting into the wrong vehicles, being mistaken for a parent when on a date, and other cringeworthy moments. We all go through them, so we might as well laugh at them.
Lorri starts off our podcast with a check-in around trauma responses while doing some research for one of our Deep Dives. Lorri shares with us her emotional experiences and how her Superficial Ego pulled her into a cycle of avoidance. Lorri also talks about her struggle with vulnerability. We learn some coping skills and take a deeper look at long seeded trauma and how it can affect our day to day lives long after we feel we have dealt with the issues. Our Deep Dive is actually a continuation of the conversation as it evolved into a conversation about the differences between relating with others and comparison as a form of controlling the conversation. We discuss the struggle of how to relate to others with differing experiences and traumas. The conversation touches on how it feels to be vulnerable when it feels like other's attempts to relate to our experience come across as a comparison. Our Off The rails this week is a game of guess that word. Lorri and Jason use extraordinary brainpower guessing the meaning of different words in the English language. The game culminates in a hilarious journey through the word Quincunx, and the many different potential meanings of said word.
Episode 37 – Is Work Working For You? Our Check-In this week, centers around Edward's feelings of boredom and unfulfillment at work. Edward is trying to figure out what his boundaries are for life, especially when it comes to working. We discuss Edward's past relationship with his job and how that affects his feelings on where he is now. The conversation takes a turn into Edward's use of dreams and work have been a method of disconnecting from his present situation and being. We resolve with a wonderful breakthrough as Edward gets a new perspective on where he is in life. Our Deep Dive this week pairs nicely with our check-in. Each has customs different than our own. We discuss some of these customs and our familiarity with them. Some will seem funny; others will arouse our curiosity.

This week's Check-in starts by being all about sleep. Jason is battling with his arch-nemesis: sleep. Edward finds out that what he is experiencing for sleep issues right now is what most people live with regularly. Lorri and Jason share with us stories of their frequent bathroom breaks and sleeping habits. We then transition to speaking about bathroom routines, safety, and comfort. Our Deep Dive this week was inspired by Jason and draws from Edward's background as an herbalist. We discuss some herbs that have been shown to assist with anxiety and depression and how to prepare them. We also talk about places to look for more information regarding herbal use for this and other ailments. As promised here are several links. Lavender in Neurological treatments: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3612440/, General Herbal information: https://medlineplus.gov/herbalmedicine.html We wrap up our episode revisiting the topic of awkward situations. It's always uncomfortably funny to discuss awkward situations that have come up in our lives.
This week's check-in comes from a conference call with everyone in their respective homes. Edward starts off talking about the anxiety around starting therapy and catching up on Continuing Education Units for his work. Jason talks about planning his Anniversary and his reaction to some feelings that came up around it. Lorri fills us in on the continuation of her shop and some interesting moments in her week. We wrap up our check-in speaking about shipping fiascos and scams we've experienced. Our Deep Dive this week is the final episode exploring the Chakra System. Jason gives us a recap of what we have covered so far, and Lorri brings us in with the Cosmic Chakras. These Chakras are the ones outside of our bodies that connect us with the Universal energy and our creative and spiritual lives. We discuss ways to activate these Chakras and what the balance and imbalance look like. For more information about the Chakras, you can reference the book “Chakra Healing and Karmic Awareness” by Keith Sherwood.
This week we decided to start our recording later in the day. Lorri starts us off by speaking about what precipitated that and how it affected her day. This leads into a discussion about sleep and a bit of insight into our day to day lives. Edward speaks about the realizations that have lately come about from his leaving of a high adrenalin career to one that is in most ways low key. Jason talks about experiencing nightmares again and what steps he's taking to work through it. Our Deep Dive this week is a continuation of our exploration of the Chakra System. We pick up where we left off and start with the Heart Chakra and move up to the Crown. Again we look at what areas of our life are affected by each Chakra, how they work together, and what it looks like when they are healthy and when they are imbalanced. We also discuss ways to work on these areas for Chakra System Health.
We begin our episode with a welcome back to each other from a short break IN recording. We catch up on all the things that have happened from porcupine sightings to kayaking, to just enjoying the summer. Our Deep Dive delves into something we mention a bit but have not really defined. Communicating and reasoning with Ego. This practice is part of the way we do our work and move through some of the more challenging moments in our lives. We discuss how each of us works with our own ego and talk about what we have learned as we have used this valuable tool. Welcome to a Feud style game Off The Rails Style. Join the antics as we try to come up with the Top 5 Healing modalities in the world. Guesses, second guesses, and good conversation develop through this game.
