In this crucial episode, host Jake McCandless delves into a topic that is shaping our children's faith—Israel's ongoing conflict. Jake explores the profound impact that media coverage of the October 7th Hamas attack on Israel and its aftermath has on young minds. He emphasizes the influence of social media and campus protests, noting how the messaging around this conflict is heavily skewed and anti-Israel. Jake makes the case that Israel is more than a political topic—it's a spiritual battleground. Every page of the Bible relates to Israel, making its current struggles essential for understanding the biblical narrative and Christian faith. Key Discussion Points: 1. Israel in the Media and Social Media: - The widespread coverage of the Israel conflict and the influence it has on young people's worldview. - Protests and violence in U.S. colleges, with many siding against Israel, creating a dangerous narrative. 2. Biblical Importance of Israel: - Israel as the setting of the Bible—central to both Old and New Testament teachings. - The prophetic significance of Israel in end-time events and its role in shaping Christian eschatology. 3. Parenting Through the Lens of Scripture: - How parents can raise children with a strong biblical understanding of Israel. - The importance of helping children see Israel not just as a country, but as a core part of their faith story. 4. Interviews and Perspectives: - Conversations with Daphne and Andrew Kirk from Generation 2 Generation on their experiences in Israel. - Upcoming interviews, including one with Charlotte of Stand with Israel, who provides insight into what's happening on college campuses. 5. Future Episodes and Content: - Jake will dive deeper into the theological relationship between the church and Israel. - More episodes to come about Israel's role in the end times and what parents need to understand. Notable Scriptures: - Zechariah 12:2-3 - God's prophecy regarding Jerusalem and its importance at the end of the age. - Psalm 2 - Nations raging against Jerusalem as a part of God's plan. Quote of the Episode: "If we discount today's Israel and its connection to Scripture, we risk diminishing the Bible's relevance to our children." — Jake McCandless Takeaway Message: Parents must engage in conversations with their children about Israel's spiritual and prophetic significance. In understanding Israel, we provide our children with a deeper connection to their faith and the unfolding story of Scripture.

Season 1, Episode 35, Release Date: 6-23-2024 Leslie Petruk and Parenting Through the Eyes of a Child Leslie is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and Director at the Stone Center for Counseling & Leadership, as well as a Clinical Supervisor. Find out more about the Stone Center here: www. thestonecenternc.com Leslie has expertise working with children, individuals, couples and families. She is an author, IFS trainer, presenter and therapist. She has written two chapters of Jenna Riemersma's book, "Altogether Us." This is a special epsidoe, because Leslie was also my first IFS teacher, in my Level one training. I couldn't have asked for a better teacher :) We nerded out a little about poetry, and here are some of our favorite poets-- Rumi, Nikita Gill, N. Scott Momaday, Jeff Foster, David Whyte, John O'Donohue, and Matt Licata. Here is some of the transcript that I wanted to highlight: David. Leslie, how can we use sandtrays in our practice? Leslie. This is a way to help dive into unconscious realm with clients. I like to give clients choice, and allow them to pick objects. They create something, without relying on their "thinking brain." In a way, it is like their parts are being laid out in front of them. David. Some people might have diffculty when given too much choice and freedom. This might even feel threatening. How do you handle this situation? Leslie. I hold the space. I focus on creating a welcoming and trusting space, and I also hold onto the truth that clients know inside what to do. I might reflect what they are doing, and what is happening, as I create this safe container for them. Although it could be more challenging for children with trauma to get started with sandtrays, once they are able to be part of this process, they tend to get lost in the sandtrays. David. When you write about parenting skills, how do you differentiate between helping someone have good parenting skills, with overall good relationship and communication skills? Leslie. That is a good question, because healthy attachment applies to any relationship. I remember one time after I did an incredible piece of work with my IFS therapist. I found that I was so present to my children afterwards, and it was a very dramatic shift that had never happened in quite the same way before. I wanted to share this with every parent! David. We have so much power over our children's lives. In some ways, they are all they really know. Leslie. As my child left for college, I worried if I had given her enough to be successful. Launching children is so hard, in many different ways. But, it is also a beautiful process. Leslie. My hope with working with parents is to help them have clarity of their parts, and to understand their agendas. David. It seems important to put our children's needs first. Leslie. I think it is all about balance. If we are not there for ourselves, we can't be our best selves for our parents. We need to care for our needs-- so we can give our children guidance and a safe place. David. I feel like as parents we want to helop our children be self-led. Leslie. Yes, and at the same tie, children are naturally filled with joy and curiosity. David. Basically, life is a sandbox for children. Leslie. The biggest message I would want to give to others is to have self-compassion. There is always something you can feel guilty about as a parent. Guilt can be a motivator to make a repair. But, it is not helpful to use this guilt as a bat to beat ourselves up with. Being able to repair with ourselves as well as our children is so important. Leslie shared that when we are activated, it is a reminder for us to get curious!

This week's question is from Erica, “I'm wondering how to deal with the inevitable disappointments that come from my kids when they get gifts sometimes. They are six and nine years old, and it seems like every time a fun event or season comes around, there ends up being disappointment, tears, and even temper flares. They get ideas in their head about how things will be and not everything works out that way. Or they have all kinds of things they want for gifts, but they don't get all of them. We just went through this for Christmas, and now they have birthdays coming up in the next two months, and I don't want a repeat. How can I help them handle the disappointment better?” When a child seems "ungrateful" or "spoiled" after receiving a gift, it can be embarrassing for the parent. But what's really going on when a child expresses disappointment when receiving gifts? It's not that they are spoiled or that there is a lack of gratitude, but rather an issue of reacting to disappointment. I'll break down what your child might be going through and how to deal with it in the moment. And more importantly, how to preemptively ease any potential let-downs ahead of time and navigate through embarrassment or discomfort should a negative reaction occur from your child in a group or home setting. Brian Mayer takes a look back at parenting. The show has done many episodes on parenting and by far issues and questions about parenting in a blended family are the most often confusing and perplexing issues. We will talk about my favorite 10 episodes that we explored parenting. If you have not listened to these, I would encourage you to do that and if you already have listened, then listen again to those that you might still be struggling with. We hope you enjoy today's message. For more information and additional resources please visit our website at http://www.theremarriedlife.com Today's Goodies In the The Remarried Life Facebook Group, I recently asked the question, “What do you struggle with the most in your blended family journey. And almost 100% of the answers centered around parenting. Whether it be different styles, difficulty in uniting with your partner, or different expectations, it is a topic that continues to baffle many people including me at times. Over the life of this podcast, parenting is something we have taken a look at on many occasions and today I wanted to highlight those episodes that I think could be very helpful with whatever issue you might be dealing with when it comes to this exasperating topic. Session 12: Four Parenting Styles – Which One Are You? - In this episode we talk about the Authoritative, Authoritarian, Neglectful, and Permissive parenting styles. They all revolve around answers to questions centered around closeness and rules. The best place to be is to say Yes to both closeness and rules or to Authoritative. Session 17: Contracts to Motivate Stepchild Behavior - Sometimes motivation can come in the form of a written document in which parents and teens can both feel empowered to change what is going on. Session 38: Parenting Through the Guilt of Divorce? - This is a very common issue in which many parents feel that they have already put their children through enough and so they will often take their foot off the gas when it comes to boundaries and discipline. Session 52: New Stepdad Tips - Becoming a new stepdad is hard. It is hard to know how to step in discipline and to manage impatience and anger through the process. Session 66: New Traditions for Kids in a Blended Family – We often think about traditions in nuclear biological families and that maybe in stepfamilies that we are somehow not allow to develop traditions of our own to give the family something they can be proud of when thinking about this new family. Listen to the out of the box ideas in this podcast episode. Session 69: Anger and Making Decisions About the Kids – This emotion is a lot like the guilt we talked about in episode 38. Making decisions when you are angry rarely ever goes well. We talk about how this anger affects children and how to deal with your own anger in a productive and constructive manner by remaining calm, getting support and thinking about what would your kids says when they are adults. Session 71: Purposeful Relationships with the Whole Family – This is another sort of outside the box episode where we talk creatively about how to engage the different personalities in the family. For example, starting a game night but rotating who leads. We talked about the appreciation wave at the dinner table, where each person stands and says something they appreciate about the person to their right. Session 80: New Stepmom Tips – Being a stepmom is so tough. Juggling all the responsibilities can sometimes be too much. We will talk about practical ways to lighten the mental and emotional load. Session 89: Who Comes First Your Spouse or Your Kids? – This is a tough subject because I will get lots of disagreements on this one, because often people will say that the kids are most important because they are mine biologically, or look at all they have been through, or you can fend for yourself because you are an adult. So not the right approach and we will talk about that on this episode. Session 90: Signs Your Are an Insecure Parent – This is something lots of struggle with and sometimes it has to do with our past. Often if there was a perfectionist mentality for your growing up, then if things aren't perfect you will look at them as failures. This can cause a great deal of anxiety so we will look at ways to cope better and make changes. Hope you enjoyed this look back at all of the great information being a better stepparent. Kathryn interviews psychologist Carl Pickhardt, author of the book “Who Stole My Child? Parenting Through the Four Stages of Adolescence”. For most parents, the onset of puberty brings an unexpected, even unwelcome change in their child's behavior, which can cause bewilderment, confusion, and sadness. Pickhardt draws on decades of work to help parents navigate the changes adolescence will bring about in their relationships with their children. Kathryn also interviews attorney and mindfulness expert Julie Potiker, author of the book “Life Falls Apart, but You Don't Have To: Mindful Methods for Staying Calm In the Midst of Chaos”. Potiker shares an easy way anyone can incorporate more joy into their daily lives. “Life is full of emotional chaos,” says Julie, “but bringing it back to focused activities that give joy to your soul can mean the difference between making it or breaking it day to day, year to year.”

Photo by Whitney H via Flickr Some call the tween years a "second toddlerhood." Like toddlers, tweens are striving for independence and determined to do things on their own. Except when they'd rather not. Some days, they want nothing more than to be little kids again, cuddled in your lap. The mood swings of tween boys catch many parents off guard, especially parents who mistakenly bought into the idea that "boys are easier." Truth is, the tween years are a challenge: for you, and for your kids. That's because a lot of physical, neurological and emotional growth happens between the ages of 10 and 14. Your boys are changing -- so quickly, in fact, that it is literally difficult to keep up. Whether this is your first or third (or seventh!) time through the tween years, you likely need support, information and humor. We're here to give it to you. In this episode, Jen & Janet discuss: Common reactions to the tween years Why your kids need reassurance during their tweens How the physical changes of tween-dom lead to common behavioral changes (Hint: increased testosterone leads to increased body odor and increased risk-taking) The 10-year gap between experience emotions, and learning to control them Why the tween years can be emotionally triggering for parents The importance of self-care during the tween years "Potted plant" parenting -- and why it may be the best way to parent tweens and teens Sam's 24 Hour Garage Challenge The value of playfulness (for tweens and their parents!) Parenting author, Ann Douglas, discusses parenting a child with a mental illness /disability, and practicing self-care so we are available as care-givers. This week on the podcast/ blog I welcome Ann Douglas, author of numerous books on parenting with over half a million copies sold. Ann and I discuss her newest book titled “Parenting Through the Storm”, which is a guide to parenting a child who is struggling with Mental health, neuro-developmental, or behavioural challenges. We also focus in on self-care for parents (and supporters), and discuss why it is important, tips to practice self-care, and how to create the space for yourself. Parenting Through the Storm In the writing of this book, Ann interviewed 50 other parents that have been through it, and she found many common threads through all of their experiences. She took her research findings as well as her own personal experiences and wrote this book to provide practical advice for parents. On the podcast Ann shares, “I wrote this book because all 4 of my kids had some sort of challenge, and at the time I thought ‘ I must be doing it wrong.’ I desperately needed to know that things could get better – and they have! Parents are resilient, children are resilient, and families are resilient. It is possible to go through all these storms together and to come out stronger and more connected on the other side” You can learn more about the book at www.anndouglas.net. Is There a Right Way to Parenting? On the podcast Ann shares, “There is a right way for your family, and you figure that out over time. Each of my 4 kids needed a different approach to parenting. It isn’t cookie cutter, because everyone is different. There were times that 1 of our kids needed ¾ of the parenting energy, which left only tiny little slices for the rest of the kids…. I felt guilty about that… but there are times when our attention had to shift around.” What is Self-Care? and Why is it Important? On the podcast Ann shares, “Sometimes people think about self-care as self-indulgence, for example, sitting on the couch eating bonbons. But, that isn’t how it usually plays out. Mainly it is about taking good care of yourself so that you have something left to give to the family member who needs you. When you are parenting a child, who is struggling you can’t afford to get completely burnt out and depleted. Without you your child will be lost.” “Even though it can feel selfish I would argue it isn’t selfish, it is self-preservation.” Practicing Self-Care We are all unique in our own ways, and the best way for us to practice self-care is unique to us. We all have a self-care tool box filled with tools to refill our energy tanks, sometimes we just aren’t opening the toolbox frequently enough. Ann provides 3 tips to practicing great self-care. 1) Physical Activity – Move your body in a way that is right for you. For Ann, this means taking 2 walks per day. (For me, this means breaking a sweat every morning by running or biking. Physical activity supports our physical health, and also enhances our brain function.) 2) Social Support – Ann shares, “It takes a village to raise a child, and I would argue it takes a village to support the parents that are supporting that child. Accept help when it is offered, and ask for help when you need it.” When you have help use the space to practice good self-care to fill your energy tank. 3) A Creative Outlet – Ann Shares, “Creative outlets take the focus away from worries, and brings our focus into that activity. There is research that shows that when our brain is actively engaged in a different activity (a hobby, etc.) it leaves us feeling more refreshed vs. vegging out on the couch.” Tips For Creating the Space for Self-Care: > Let others help you, and take a slice of that time to do something kind for yourself. > Ask for help. It is a great opportunity that you are giving someone else when you ask them to help – lose the guilt about that. > If we need to find the time then look at where you are wasting the time. For how many hours are you watching TV, or on your phone? > Don’t be seduced into the that zoning out, find a creative activity. > Be intentional about creating the space in your day for self-care. (I block off the first 2 hours of my day to break a sweat, read, meditate) Ann shares her personal story of falling into bad habits that resulted in poor sleep, anxiety, and gaining 100 lbs, then breaking the cycle, building positive self-care habits, and loosing those 100 lbs. I thank Ann for coming on the podcast/ blog to share the what she has learned on her parenting journey, and for sharing her wealth of knowledge on self-care to help us live happy and healthy lives.
