Angela meets Paul Larsen, a former triathlete and expert in high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and fat metabolism, who shares his journey from competitive sports to academia, detailing his extensive research and work with Olympic programs in Australia and New Zealand. Together they examine the importance of understanding training stress versus life stress, the benefits of zone 2 training for recovery and fat metabolism, and how wearable technology can optimise training plans KEY TAKEAWAYS The heart rate zones are crucial for optimising training. Zone 2, calculated as 180 minus your age, is essential for enhancing fat metabolism and overall endurance. It's important to avoid spending too much time in Zone 3, as it can lead to increased cortisol levels and hinder fat loss. Engaging in low-intensity activities, such as walking, can significantly improve recovery, enhance fat metabolism, and support overall health. These activities help balance the nervous system and promote better sleep. HIIT involves longer intervals (2-5 minutes) that improve cardiovascular fitness and VO2 max, while SIT consists of short, maximal efforts (20-40 seconds) that recruit fast-twitch muscle fibres and enhance mitochondrial density. Both training stress and life stress impact heart rate variability and overall health. Managing life stressors is crucial for maintaining a healthy metabolic state, as high stress can lead to increased insulin levels and central adiposity. BEST MOMENTS "It's always the context over the content. Every person listening here is a little bit different."  "The heart rate variability is a surrogate of the status of the balance of the nervous system."  "If you can just get out there, get out the door, and do just what you said, you'll get quite a bit." "Zone three gets some general bad rap because it's so easy for us to kind of move into this one." I really wanted to start this season off with a conversation about something that I think has a way of worming its way into almost every area of every person's life: imposter syndrome. And what I love about this conversation with Paul Larsen is that he sees imposter syndrome as an inevitability for people with a growth mindset. If you're not trying to do anything new, if you're not trying to grow, then you're probably not going to hear that little voice in the back of your head talking you down. But when you think about taking a risk, when you start a new season of your life, we start to doubt ourselves — and, really, if I've learned anything after 143 episodes of this show, it's how common this is.When we understand that this is just a natural phenomenon that occurs in the human brain, then we can remind ourselves that we don't need to overcome anything — it's just a little hint that we're growing. And Paul has some great advice for how we can start to reframe that feeling in every area of our lives.Resources:Learn more at https://www.paulnlarsen.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulnlarsen/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/findyourvoiceasaleader/

The single biggest source of churn might surprise you. It’s not a communications issue, or a product/market fit issue, or even an onboarding problem. The biggest driver of churn in most consumer subscriptions is what’s known as passive or involuntary churn. Involuntary churn is when a customer is canceled due to a payment issue or other technical problem. According to ProfitWell CEO Patrick Campbell, a recent guest on Subscription Stories, involuntary churn makes up 20-40% of overall churn. Many organizations don’t even track passive churn, and that’s a mistake, because there are ways to manage. Today’s guest, Paul Larsen of Optimized Payments, is one of the leading experts on “card not present” payments, and works with many of the largest subscription businesses in the world on churn management. He launched his career at Reader’s Digest, one of the earliest and largest subscription publications in the world. When Paul started, churn management focused on getting people to renew their subscription by mailing in a check. Since then, he has been deep in the world of credit cards, debit cards and alternate payments, helping subscription merchants reduce costs and increase customer retention. In our conversation, we talk about why so many good subscribers end up in the dreaded “do not honor” bucket, who should own passive churn in the organization, and how to bring together the right team to manage involuntary churn. Excerpt: Subscriptions are great. We love them, but there's promise and peril associated with them at all times. We are joined by Paul Larsen of Optimized Payments, one of the leading experts on "card not present" payments. He shares his vast knowledge about working with the largest subscription businesses on churn management as he discusses the reasons behind the dreaded "do not honor" bucket and how to build the dream team to address this involuntary issue. Follow our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/groups/goyeforthpodcast/ Hello everyone! On today's show, I speak with Paul Larsen who served in The Texas, Houston East mission (T.H.E. Mission) from 2003 to 2005 and I think that you'll love hearing about his experiences. And in my missionary minute, I talk about taking opportunities to teach. So let's get to it! ... A big thanks to my good friend Paul Larsen. Paul is such an amazing guy and if you are wondering if he is related to Chelsea Larsen from Episode 6, well, yes, he is her husband. As I mentioned in her episode, they are just a fantastic family and we are sad to see them move out of the ward, and as I said we know they have big things ahead of them in Idaho Falls. In today's missionary minute, I really liked what Paul's mission president said about taking the opportunity to teach wherever they were, even at doorsteps. I am an odd guy about some things and I kind of think that in my head things need to be done in order and by the book. So as my kids were growing up I would have ideas of things I wanted to discuss with them and think, “Well, I've got to talk to them about this in the next Family Home Evening.” And then someone taught me this principle about teaching wherever you are and that might not line up ideally with your FHE lesson. So maybe teach your kids while you're doing work in the yard, or teach them as you're driving them to school, etc. This changed how I viewed teaching moments and taught me that just like a missionary who is called to preach the gospel 24/7, as a parent, I am called to teach my kids 24/7, not just during preach my gospel or family home evening. Well, that's about it for today's show. If you or someone you know has served a mission and you think that they would be a fun guest for the show, please contact me @ goyeforthpodcast@gmail.com If you liked the show, please subscribe so that you are notified when new episodes come out. Since then, she has worked closely in payment processing, dabbled in other areas of subscription organizations, and finally landed in her current role as a Partner at Paul Larsen Consulting, a consulting group that has helped over 600 subscription businesses improve payment processing, increase retention, reduce involuntary churn, monitor KPIs, and more. In this episode, Melanie discusses the importance of being in front of potential fraud by having solid fraud solutions in place, as well as having clear communication with customers in order to avoid unnecessary chargebacks. Melanie also provides insight into the changes that the subscription industry has faced since the onset of COVID-19, including a greater focus on customer experience in the form of giving customers more control over their subscriptions (e.g. pausing or skipping a month, switching tiers, etc.), an increase in insufficient funds on debit cards due to hourly workers receiving an inconsistent flow of income, and more.Melanie wraps the episode by suggesting that although price and ease of integration are important indicators that subscription businesses should consider when looking for an acquiring partner, the number of recurring subscription businesses that use that partner can also be an important indicator. You can reach Melanie at mstout@paullarsenconsulting.com and LinkedIn, and don't forget to check out Paul Larsen Consulting.Don't forget to rate, download, and subscribe to the show and share this episode with your network. In this episode of the Subscriptions: Scaled podcast, Nick Fredrick, President of Rebar Technology, welcomes back previous podcast guest Melanie Stout, Partner at Paul Larsen Consulting, to dive into acquisitions in the subscription space.Melanie dishes on how subscription businesses are increasingly considering creative and customer-centric ways to differentiate and boost their products in a time when online retail competition is higher than ever. This includes finding ways to push payment processes into the background by adding in-app wallets, additional payment methods such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, and integrating payment systems such as PayPal, as well as exploring new ways of engaging customers by adding subscription services with intangible value.Melanie also touches on ways in which a subscription model can actually work against businesses, such as when the product would provide greater value as single-sale rather than as a subscription, as well as active steps that subscription businesses can take to decrease or prevent churn - namely, by offering more flexibility in the subscription by allowing subscribers to pause their subscription, downgrade their subscription tier, receive a discounted subscription, or even easily cancel their subscription account. The episode wraps with Melanie going into the changing trends in the subscription payment space. She details the recent increase in insufficient funds and fraud and suggests that in the future, subscription businesses should see less friendly fraud given the increase in rules and regulations around information and clarity in the subscription sign up process. You can reach Melanie at mstout@paullarsenconsulting.com and LinkedIn, and don't forget to check out Paul Larsen Consulting.Don't forget to rate, download, and subscribe to the show and share this episode with your network. Welcome to this week's edition of the podcast. I hope you had a decent Easter.    It's quickly been back to business for the association as this week BIGGA has been working alongside the R&A to produce revised guidelines for what constitutes Essential Maintenance on the golf course.   This has been adapted to recognise that we're three weeks closer to summer and that golf courses have seen reduced maintenance levels for almost a month now and so some practices may need to be reintroduced.   Last week also saw the postponement of the 149th Open Championship for a year. Although we aren't sure what the world's going to look like in July with regards to whether golf clubs will be open for business and tours able to resume, the R&A decided that it's within the current spirit to hold off hosting the event until 2021. With the R&A keen to hold the 150th Open at St Andrews, it was decided that the 149th would still take place at Royal St George's, just a year later than expected. To find out what that meant for the greenkeepers, I gave course manager Paul Larsen a call and we had a catch up about how he and his team have reacted to the news and also how they've been maintaining the course and following the essential maintenance guidelines.   Following that conversation we've got the latest Continue to Learn Extra webinar. Steve Chappell is the former superintendent at Gleneagles for the 2014 Ryder Cup and is now plying his trade at Royal Bled in Slovenia and he gave us a talk about why now more than ever it's important for greenkeepers to understand their role within the golf club as a business enterprise.   Steve has worked in the greenkeeping industry for 30 years managing a wide range of golfing facilities from traditional member owned clubs to single owner commercial operations. Steve has been involved in four Ryder Cups including the hosting of the event at Gleneagles in 2014. In 2018 Steve moved to Slovenia to become the Golf Course Superintendent of Royal Bled Golf Club. This webinar will discuss the notion that a greenkeeping management role is about more than just producing a great playing surface and managing the greenkeeping team. It's about recognising who the golf course ‘belongs' to and how, as the main asset, it has to perform for the benefit of the business. With the current challenges that face us all, now more than ever greenkeepers will have to adapt to the new normal and the challenges of keeping members, committees and the club management satisfied by learning to manage expectations and be adaptable within the limitations of the resources available. Membership and Subscription Growth
Reduce Your Monthly Failed Charges So You Collect More Recurring Revenue

Membership and Subscription Growth

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 18, 2017 58:59

Subscription businesses benefit from the advantage of recurring revenue. Acquire new members and keep your existing ones. Sounds simple, right? We understand it’s not that easy. How do you keep your recurring revenue if your members’ credit card charges are declined? When you charge the credit card that you have on file, send the product or service, and then find out the charge was declined, that’s called involuntary churn. And, it sucks. It sucks out your revenue, and the hassle often sucks out the member’s subscription. I met with Paul Larsen to discuss this challenge. In addition to a lengthy list of credentials and experience, Paul is the owner of PaulLarsenConsulting.com, a company with a focus on helping businesses conquer involuntary churn and increase their recurring revenue. You will discover: • Why “lowest price” merchant services firms can lead to increased credit card declines and decreased recurring revenue from existing members. • Why you are getting so many credit card declines (and it’s not necessarily because your customer doesn’t have available credit) and what to do about it. • Current trends in the credit card industry and how they impact credit card declines. • Auto-updater services that get you credit card data when your customer receives an updated card with a new expiration date. • How to identify a credit card processor that can help you get more charges approved each month and increase your recurring revenue from your existing members. What are the Biggest Causes of Credit Card Declines? You see the recurring revenue of your existing members decreasing at a rate higher than your churn. This is what happens with involuntary churn. The charges on your members’ cards start getting declined. Incorrect card information is the biggest cause. When a member’s card information changes, you are not often notified. There are several unintentional reasons for the change, and the customer often fully intends for you to receive your payment. Card information changes when members are issued new cards. This happens when they lose a card, experience fraudulent charges, change out their card preference for a new rewards program… and the list goes on. An additional disruption in the system is occurring because every card in America is being reissued with chips. Almost all of them are reissued with new expiration dates if not new account numbers. “Because every card has a new piece of information, the old legacy information has been switched out on which the last charge for that subscription took place,” explains Larsen. “So, we've seen overall decline rates steadily rising over the past two years again, in large part because of this mass reissuance.” “The period of great volatility has been about four years now because, even before the chips, there were the massive breaches at Target and Home Depot, so those two breaches alone caused 110 million credit cards to be reissued. Plus, we're all losing our credit cards it seems, at least once a year,” adds Larsen. Companies who have merchant processors who don’t deal with this issue have seen self-involuntary churn triple in the past 18 months. And it’s not over yet. While most credit cards have been reissued with chips, still many hundreds of millions of debit cards are yet to be chipped. At a time when you are doing all you can to keep your members, this problem becomes a huge hassle for them. They have to proactively update their information. It’s giving the member the opportunity to look at their subscription and decide if they want to renew or not. When often, a card that is regularly charged goes without their attention and the subscription continues. In addition to changing card information, another cause of card declines is the prepaid cards. When prepaid cards are purchased and used to buy a subscription, they become a declined charge when the money runs out. “Fraudsters endeavor to gain the system using prepaid cards,” warns Larsen. He adds,
