Peter Salerno, a retired licensed psychotherapist, nationally recognised expert on personality disorders and pathological relationships, and author of The Nature and Nurture of Narcissism and Traumatic Cognitive Dissonance (2024), discusses his work in the field of narcissism. Beginning with his appearance in the Hulu documentary on Ted Bundy, Salerno rejects the claims by those who believe Bundy's serial killing was a kind of reactive aggression, criticising those who believe Bundy's actions were somehow a result of a childhood trauma. To the contrary, Salerno notes how Bundy was able to sustain relationships, even working on a suicide helpline, such that he was able to earn the trust of others, all while Bundy kidnapped, sexually attacked, and murdered others. Salerno draws parallels between this type of psychological assessment of serial killers and the narcissist, where there has been an inclination in the field to understand the narcissist's aggression and control as reactive instead of proactive. Covering the genetic and biological roots behind narcissism, he highlights the scientific findings and neuroimaging that reveal the physiological underpinnings and genetic propensities towards narcissistic behaviour, noting, “This isn't just personality. This is all psychopathology and all mental health or mental disorder.” Salerno historicises research in this field, which is rapidly changing in how it frames narcissism and its victims. For instance, he elucidates the damage that narcissists inflict upon others, what he terms “traumatic cognitive dissonance,” observing how narcissists inflict damage by “insert[ing] a dilemma inside of you, and you don't know what's real or not.” Evidencing how narcissists often intentionally give mixed messages, causing distress in their victims, Salerno explores how this creates a constant state of ambiguity and confusion in “a normal person who simply wants to collaborate and cooperate,” while chronicling how the trauma of narcissistic abuse plays into the victim's goodwill as victims often attempt to understand why the narcissist would terrorise another person. Salerno relates how those suffering from traumatic cognitive dissonance are caught in a double-bind as they attempt to rationalise such behaviour by believing that this was reactive abuse which actually keeps them from seeing this person as a proactive abuser as they think: “Well, you know, they must have been really traumatised. That makes sense why they would be treating me this way.” Salerno carefully examines how narcissists seek out loving and trusting victims to exploit, while self-justifying their actions, even reversing and externalising the blame. In this heartfelt episode of Happy Business Radio, Peter Salerno welcomes Evan Jackson — a respected insurance broker, leader, and mentor — for a raw, inspiring conversation about happiness, purpose, and showing up fully in business and life. Therapy on the Cutting Edge
Going Beyond ‘Hurt People Hurt People': Rethinking Narcissism and Personality Disorders

Therapy on the Cutting Edge

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 1, 2025 58:27

In this episode, I speak with Peter about his work on narcissism and its place within the broader spectrum of personality disorders. He shares that when he was in graduate school for literature, he was required to participate in a course of psychotherapy—an experience that sparked his interest in the field and eventually led him to pursue clinical training. Peter explains that he became increasingly interested in personality disorders, especially after having his own personal encounter with someone exhibiting narcissistic traits. This experience helped shape his focus in this area of study. He notes that the field of psychotherapy often views narcissism through the lens of “hurt people hurt people”—the idea that harmful behavior stems from unresolved trauma. While that framework can sometimes be useful, Peter believes it may also lead people to remain in harmful dynamics for too long because they extend too much empathy and assume the behavior is unintentional. He discusses meta-analytic research on twins showing that roughly 50% of psychological traits are heritable; in some studies, narcissistic traits have been found to be up to 79% heritable. Peter emphasizes the importance of clinicians and clients understanding that, in many cases, narcissistic individuals do know their behavior is harmful and continue it because it benefits them. This runs counter to the prevailing idea that such behavior is purely unconscious or trauma-driven. He acknowledges that this perspective is controversial and that he has received criticism for challenging long-standing therapeutic assumptions. When working with clients, Peter helps them navigate the cognitive dissonance between their painful or abusive experiences and their belief that the narcissistic individual “didn't mean it” or was simply reacting from trauma. The belief that someone is merely “wounded” and reacting can keep people in unhealthy relationships far beyond what is safe or reasonable. We also discussed the differences between narcissism and antisocial personality disorder. Peter explains that one way to determine whether a person is workable is to assess their collaborative capacity—and, importantly, for therapists not to assume there is mutual agreement on collaboration or shared responsibility. He underscores the importance of validating victims of these relational dynamics, reminding them that no matter how much self-work they do, they may not be able to improve the relationship because the problem may not be about them at all. Part of his work involves helping clients reconnect with their sense of self, especially when an invalidating environment has led them to doubt their own perceptions, question their reality, or even wonder whether they are a “good” person. Peter Salerno, PsyD, is a Doctor of Psychology, retired licensed psychotherapist, and nationally recognized expert on personality disorders and pathological relationships. Over the course of his career, he has specialized in personality disorders, family trauma, complex trauma, and pathological abuse. He was trained and qualified to administer the Hare Psychopathy Checklist–Revised (PCL-R), the gold standard for identifying psychopathy in clinical and forensic settings. He was also a featured expert in the docuseries Ted Bundy: Dialogue with the Devil, streaming on Hulu and Disney+. His work has always been driven by a passion for understanding the human mind and helping people make sense of some of its most challenging and misunderstood conditions. Today, he uses that expertise to help people around the world understand painful, confusing, and often manipulative relationship dynamics. While he no longer practices traditional therapy, he offers remote consultations focused on clarity, insight, and practical decision-making—not treatment.

We're back with Dr. Peter Salerno this week talking about his new book "Cruelty By Nature: The Science of Intentional Abuse." If you've been at the receiving end of abuse and were confused why unconditional love wasn't working, this episode is for you. Do some people enjoy being cruel? Is unkindess its own reward? Salerno discusses the research around personality disorders and sadism and takes on therapists who endangers victims when they counsel victims to meet harmful acts with forgiveness and greater understanding. Conventional therapy argues that antisocial behavior comes from a person acting out trauma and masking shame. This view, Salerno argues, ignores behavioral science. Some people behave unethically because their brutish methods work for them. Worse, some disordered people actually derive pleasure from hurting others.

Tracy talks with pyschologist Dr. Peter Salerno about the intersection of infidelity and personality disorders. A lot of conventional therapy assumes that clients lack insight into their behavior and that antisocial behavior is the result of childhood trauma. Dr. Salerno argues that this approach ignores the behavioral science of personality disorders. Manipulation, deception, and a pathological lack of remorse are hallmarks of narcissism and sociopathy and these abusive acts are intentional. And to a certain extent, even hard-wired.  How does this science challenge the victim-blaming narratives around infidelity? Could the serial cheater, family abandoner, or deadbeat parent have a personality disorder? Do these manipulative characters keep you confused and hopeful on purpose?  *** Peter Salerno, PsyD,  is a retired licensed psychotherapist, trauma-informed educator, and the author of Nature and Nurture of Narcissism; and Traumatic Cognitive Dissonance: Healing from an Abusive Relationship with a Disordered Personality. In this episode of *Happy Business Radio*, host Peter Salerno sits down with business coach and mentor Sinan Abu Aisheh, who shares his remarkable journey from a troubled youth to becoming a leader in the coaching industry. Sinan reflects on his early years, growing up in a Middle Eastern family in Australia, and the influences that led him into a life of gang involvement and violence during his teenage years. As he navigated a world filled with crime and addiction, Sinan began to question his path, especially after experiencing dangerous situations and the realisation that his life was spiralling out of control. A turning point came when he reconciled with his estranged father, allowing him to release built-up anger and start transforming his mindset. Sinan credits martial arts as a crucial element in his redemption. Under the guidance of a former Lebanese Special Forces trainer, he developed the discipline and mental toughness necessary to move away from his past. This training not only helped him manage his emotions but also set the foundation for his future in business. His foray into network marketing opened doors, where he eventually built a customer base of 30,000 and began sharing his story on stages with thousands of people. His powerful personal experiences made him realise the impact his journey could have on others, inspiring him to launch a coaching business focused on peak performance, mindset, and business growth. Throughout the conversation, Peter and Sinan discuss the importance of collaboration, networking, and finding the right mentors for different stages of life. Sinan's philosophy revolves around helping others create rituals and systems that sustain long-term success, rather than relying solely on willpower. His story is a testament to how early struggles and life-changing decisions can shape one's path to success, and how personal transformation can fuel professional achievements. Sinan's insights provide valuable lessons for listeners, especially those looking to overcome adversity and thrive in their business endeavours. Peter Salerno welcomes you to another episode of Happy Business Radio, Peters introduced his longtime friend Rick Laporte who is his guest this week Rick, who has been a businessman all his life. Rick is joining him to discuss his experience and knowledge in the business world. Rick is a successful Vietnam Veteran who, without any technical experience, took over an engineering firm near his home and ran it so well that it grew and grew. He then went on to other businesses and investments and is now very wealthy. In the conversation, Rick emphasizes that it's more important to do business from the heart rather than from the wallet. People are willing to pay extra for a product because they know they're getting it at great rates. It is important to make sure that when people come to your business, they are satisfied with their experience and that they leave feeling like their time was well spent. Rick is an entrepreneur who did not attend university due to the need for money in the 60s. He learned things that universities and schools can't teach and eventually bought an engineering firm. Rick's advice is to make an experience for customers rather than a chore and to not only focus on money but also to be proud of what you create. He believes that success is achieved by helping people out and it is not always about money. He reflects on his childhood aspirations and talks about how difficult it was to get an apprenticeship in the 60s. Peter Salerno hosts Happy Business Radio on Radio Italia Uno 87.6 FM, In this episode, your host Peter Salerno introduces his guest Glynn Nicholas Glynn Nicholas is a busker, comedian, producer and business owner. Glynn talks about his background as a busker, and how it is a great way to learn how to work with people, sell and keep people's attention. Glynn explains the meaning of his name, which means valley in Welsh. Glynn is a theatre producer and performer, and recently he was performing on a cruise ship. His production company is about to relaunch a show next year in Adelaide called Song Contest Almost Eurovision, which is a homage to the Eurovision Song Contest. Eurovision Song Contest started in 1952 as a way to bring together a war-torn Europe. The show is a bit like being at the finals of Eurovision, with eleven countries competing and the audience voting to decide the winner. Glynn's company also produced a show called Eurobeat, which they toured Australia with and took to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2007. He advises young performers to go to Edinburgh with the view of breaking even, if they're lucky, but also to have a good time. Glynn took the prototype to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and chose an 800-seater venue against most people's advice, and took 10,000 clackers, badges and flags to the show. It became the biggest-selling show of the festival and was later approached by Cameron Macintosh's right-hand man to tour the UK for 20 weeks before having a three-month run in the West End of London. However, when the global financial crisis hit, sales for other shows plummeted but the Eurovision Show was one of the few whose sales were actually increasing. Welcome to a new episode of Happy Business Radio your host Peter Salerno introduces his special guest, Ron Fiddler, who is the founder and managing partner of Podcast City and Podcast City Radio. Peter expresses his appreciation for being friends with Ron and his wife Karen for a while. Ron is then surprised to be on the other side of the conversation as he is usually producing Peter's show. Ron is a Podcast coach and producer, podcast and radio host who has a very interesting background  Peter expresses that the more they get to know Ron, the more they want to learn about him. Ron reveals that when he was a young boy, he aspired to be like his father who was a chef in the Australian defence force army. He eventually achieved his dream and became a chef, working for Spotless Services. He started off as a kitchen hand and worked his way up to an apprentice and then to a chef. Ron had a passion for cooking and wanted to pursue it, so he moved overseas to pursue his dreams. Ron is a chef who followed in his father's footsteps, working as a chef for 15 years and working in colleges across Queensland.  He then had an opportunity to work with coalition forces in the Middle East, cooking for 5000-8000 people a day at different camps in Iraq and Afghanistan. He got to cook for high-profile people such as President George W. Bush, Hillary Clinton and Donald Rumsfeld.  It was an amazing experience for him and he was lucky to be in the safe green zone, though he was always aware of the servicemen and women who put themselves in danger. Ron talks about his experiences of being overseas in a war zone and that he did it for the money, after coming back from the Middle East, Ron got into Real Estate as a Real Estate sales agent before starting his own consultancy, business and support agency. There's only been in the last three years that Ron has decided to turn to a passion. He loves Radio and podcasting and started his own podcasting studio and radio station in Adelaide South Australia.  Peter and Ron talk about how most people find themselves in a better place after leaving a difficult situation. People should not stay in a rut and life is too short to be miserable. He learned from the people he encountered in Iraq, even though they had so little, they were still happy.  He encourages listeners not to stay in a difficult situation and to find a better place. Peter Salerno is the host of Happy Business Radio, which airs every Monday from 2-3 pm on Radio Italia Uno. He is thankful for his listeners around the world, especially those in Adelaide. He has been receiving messages from people who were considering closing their businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic but were inspired by his guests to keep going. He emphasizes that his guests are the ones who inspire listeners and tell stories of what they've done to succeed in business. One particular example of a business that was able to stay afloat was due to Peter's guests encouraging them to keep their expectations high and fly out of the pandemic. Peter also mentions another client from 2017-2018 who was about to close their business but was able to turn it around. The speaker is thanking listeners from around the world for tuning into their podcast. He tells the story of one listener in particular, an Adelaide business owner who was ready to shut up shop but was inspired by the podcast to keep going and grow his business by 400%. The speaker also talks about how people in places like Iceland, Argentina and Chile have started using the podcast as part of their networking meetings and how it has spread all the way to India and Thailand. He then introduces his special guest Rex Buckingham, a friend of his who has known for a long time. Rex is a business consultant and manager who has written a book called 'Develop Through Leadership Thinking'. In the book, Rex examines how to change one's thoughts and beliefs in order to develop leadership skills. He suggests that if we hang around people who are negative, we will tend to become negative ourselves, and therefore need to be selective about the company we keep. He also stresses the importance of decision-making and encourages people to make decisions to listen to positive advice, in order to develop strong leadership skills. This conversation is about understanding the importance of having people who can provide you with the support and advice you need. The speaker talks about how it is important to own your ability to make decisions, but also to be willing to talk to people and tell them the truth if you are struggling. He then tells the story of a man who had two businesses that were doing poorly and he was unable to figure out how to turn them around. The speaker emphasizes the importance of finding coaches, mentors, and positive people to talk to in order to get the right advice and help. He stresses the need to seek out experts in different fields for the advice and help you need, rather than relying on family or friends for advice that is not in their area of expertise. He then introduces his special guest Marthese Agius and thanks listeners who have promoted and shared the show, saying the show is beneficial to everyone. Marthese Agius is a guest on a show and Peter has known her and her family for a long time. Marthese has always been intrigued by the different things she has done and encourages others to realize that it is no longer the traditional idea of working for one company for 25 years. People are changing jobs all the time due to the internet and the way the world has changed due to COVID-19. Marthese is currently in the gym industry, but previously specialized in Australian opals, which was mainly for tourists. However, due to the lack of tourists, she had to pivot her business to diamonds, investment pieces, and other items. Marthese is now focusing on engagement rings, and the most popular items are sapphires, precious coloured gems, black opals, pink diamonds, and coloured diamonds. Prices are rising quickly, so Marthese has to re-quote prices every five days. Brilliance is the speaker's company that designs gems, and they make engagement rings, push presents, anniversary rings, and wedding bands. Marthese had originally wanted to be an air hostess, but instead studied travel and tourism, took a gap year to Malta and then moved to Sydney to work in the gem industry. Marthese had a long and varied career. She began working in the opal industry in Adelaide but eventually decided to take a gap year and pursue a different career path. This led to a contract in Dubai with the Sheikh of Dubai, where she was an event coordinator for his inaugural fashion festival and shopping festival. She was amazed by the list of fashion houses she was working with, such as Valentino, Kenzo, Sony, and Raikel Emmanuel Nanggaro. This experience encouraged her to push herself and try something new, as she believes that everything people want is just outside their boundaries.

— Dr. Pater Salerno believes that people make positive and lasting changes based on the insight gained during the process of psychotherapy. Psychotherapy provides an opportunity for people to reassess personal history and make connections between past and present conflicts. He does NOT view people as sick, dysfunctional, or disordered; rather, Dr. Salerno believes that when our desire to grow outweighs our fear of growth, we become empowered to reach our full potential and to live the life that we truly want to live. When this cannot be accomplished on our own, psychotherapy is simply an effective resource that can become a meaningful and liberating experience. Understanding the impact of work-related trauma you experience as a firefighter brings both challenges and benefits. Reliving memories that you wish would just stay buried can seem like torture, and it can stir up all kinds of emotions that you have tried hard to keep at bay, but working through trauma will bring clarity to your life that you haven't had in a long time. It will feel like tremendous relief to have your life back so you can finally be present and deeper connected to yourself and the ones you love. Eventually, you will end up enjoying your time off-duty in a truly positive way.
