Back in episode 15, we discussed the story of Deucalion and Pyrrha in their experience of the great flood sent by Zeus to destroy humanity. However, there are other flood myths we didn't get to cover because of our focus. So, we welcomed Chris Stewart from the History of China to go through Chinese creation stories, flood myths, scientific controversy, and more! Sources for this episode: Allan, S. Griechische Mythologie - Das Chaos und seine Kinder

Mit: Orion, Skorpion, Pleiaden, Widder, Argonauten, Argonautika, Deukalion, Pyrrha, Hellen, Doros, Ion, Achaios, Aiolos, Athamas, Salmoneus, Kretheus, Sisyphos, Böotien, Nephele, Hera, Ixion, Hephaistos, Phrixos, Helle, Ino, Kadmos, Hermes, Kolchis, Aietes, Helios, Perse, Kirke, Pasiphae, Minos, Minotauros, Chalkiope, Medea, Iophassa, Aretia, Ares, Thessalien, Tyro, Enipeus, Poseidon, Pelias, Neleus, Sidero, Aison, Pheres, Amythaon, Jason, Dodona. On The Literary Life podcast today we are pleased to bring you a special episode focusing on the importance of a good translation when reading works originally written in other languages. Angelina, Cindy and Thomas are joined for this conversation by Dr. Anne Phillips, who has a BA in Latin and Greek and a Doctorate in Classical Studies and teaches Latin at the House of Humane Letters. They start out with the question of basic principles for determining what makes a good translation. Angelina brings up C. S. Lewis' review of Fitzgerald's translation of The Odyssey and the principles he sets forth. Anne shares her experience with reading classic works in their original languages and how much richer and more enjoyable it is for her. Another topic they cover is the challenge of translating poetry. Angelina, Thomas, and Anne both share some of their least liked translations of classical Greek and Latin works, as well as some recommendations for better translations. They also talk about finding good translations of Old English and Middle English works. Thomas is also teaching a webinar along with Michael Williams on the modern poets W. H. Auden and T. S. Eliot on September 28th. You can now register at House of Humane Letters. Commonplace Quotes: He had the successful portrait painters essential gift and saw men, with few exceptions, as they liked to see themselves. C. V. Wedgwood In my opinion value-judgements in literature should not be hurried. It does a student little good to be told that A is better than B, especially if he prefers B at the time. He has to feel values for himself, and should follow his individual rhythm in doing  so. In the meantime, he can read almost anything in any order, just as he can eat mixtures of food that would have his elders reaching for the baking soda. A sensible teaching or librarian can soon learn how to give guidance to a youth's reading that allows for undeveloped taste and still doesn't turn him into a gourmet or a dyspeptic before his time. Northrop Frye A good translation is one that lets Homer sing. Thomas Banks There is a sense in which everything is untranslatable. A man may write what is as good or even better than the original, but from the nature of the case it cannot be precisely the same thing. There are even moments when one feels it is something of a desecration to translate at all, but that is surely over-scrupulous, a weakness which, if all had yielded to it, would certainly have left the world poorer. Walter Headlam Ode 5, Book 1: To Pyrrha by Horace, trans. by John Milton What slender youth, bedew'd with liquid odors, Courts thee on roses in some pleasant cave, Pyrrha? For whom bind'st thou In wreaths thy golden hair, Plain in thy neatness? O how oft shall he Of faith and changed gods complain, and seas Rough with black winds, and storms Unwonted shall admire! Who now enjoys thee credulous, all gold, Who, always vacant, always amiable Hopes thee, of flattering gales Unmindful. Hapless they To whom thou untried seem'st fair. Me, in my vow'd Picture, the sacred wall declares to have hung My dank and dropping weeds To the stern god of sea. Books Mentioned: Velvet Studies by C. V. Due to a frustratingly renewed interest, we're revisiting the Deconstructing Atlantis series. The story of Atlantis has fascinated the world for centuries... But how many of us know where the story came from, or what is actually included in the original source? Episode one of Deconstructing Atlantis dives into the story of Atlantis as it exists in the Timaeus and Critias. CW/TW: far too many Greek myths involve assault. Given it's fiction, and typically involves gods and/or monsters, I'm not as deferential as I would be were I referencing the real thing. Wade describes their line of jewelry as “An evergreen line.” Pyrrha doesn't conform to the latest trends; Pyrrha's designs are personal. In 1959 Oxford University Press published a 200-page book containing 451 translations (half of them in English) of a single 16-line Latin poem, Ad Pyrrham or “The Ode to Pyrrha.” The poet—now nearly forgotten—was perhaps the most influential poet of all time. His name: Quintus Horatius Flaccus, known in the English-speaking world as Horace. For 2,000 years Horace was admired as possibly the greatest poet in history. And then Latin—especially advanced Latin—became a thing of the past and few were able to read his grammatically complex works. Today, of course, poetry itself has become passé. But at Wyoming Catholic College, Latin is a required subject and poems are read, studied, and memorized. Latinist Eugene Hamilton has been helping a group of students work there way through a selection of Horace's Odes.

I’m thrilled to continue an “Under the hood” fashion series, this week looking at jewelry after last week’s denim show. Pyrrah jewelry are one of the few jewelry brands with full transparency and commitment to ethics in the supply chain and for their team who make the pieces so founder Danielle is.  In 1993, Wade and Danielle Papin met, fell in love and began handcrafting jewelry at their kitchen table in Vancouver. Two years later—following myriad conversations about their shared appreciation for good design and old things—they founded Pyrrha with a commitment to letting their materials inspire their work.  The resulting jewelry is Pyrrha's now iconic line of talisman necklaces, bracelets, cuffs and rings made from reclaimed silver, bronze and gold. Each piece is handcrafted in Pyrrha's Vancouver studio—a striking contrast to the glut of overseas, factory-made, mass-produced jewelry that is so common in their industry. "Everything seems to be cranked out at a staggering pace and then left for dead," says Wade. "Because we live in such a throwaway society, it’s necessary—and joyful—to create some things that can be kept." While Pyrrha remains a local treasure in its native Vancouver, the talismans have captured international attention. The line has been embraced by celebrities and style icons the world over, and retails at such global boutiques as Liberty of London, Le Bon Marche Paris and United Arrows of Japan. In 2010 Wade and Danielle took what felt like their natural next step, opening their extraordinary flagship store in L.A. The Pyrrha store allows fans to experience the Pyrrha world, as well as to see the extensive talisman collection in its entirety. I hope you enjoy learning about the jewellery trade more intimately as well as this beautiful brand and head over to the show notes for the sponsor offer and further details on xxx at lowtoxlife.com/podcast See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
