Alecio Araci about sorrow, forgiveness, oppression, coping and traditions within Romani culture

Welcome to SAQMI Play, the podcast that features queer filmmakers and filmmaking. This episode is a talk between the Swedish based filmmaker and sometimes actor Alecio Araci and Saqmi's own hostee Sam Message. The conversation took place in a packed Saqmi's headquarter in Majorna in Göteborg and followed the screening of Alecio Araci's trilogy consisting of the short films Chavo, Mami and Lil tuke – all of them focusing on queer Roma experiences and dealing with themes such as sorrow, forgiveness, oppression, coping and traditions. In this episode of SAQMI Play we are also digging into Alecio Araci's love for splatter and horror movies, camp, the burlesque and bizarre with some clips from a work-in-progress gore splatter comedy/mockumentary, partly shot on Super 8. This episode is a recording of the event Nightfall - Queer Talks & Screenings #12 which took place at SAQMI May 17, 2023. Alecio Araci has a background in DIY and underground culture and has worked diligently on both low- and high budget projects since the mid-00s. Between the years 2015 and 2018, he trained on the bachelor's program in film at Valand Academy in Gothenburg and has since continued his creative work both in front of and behind the camera. With his love for genre films and burlesque, he constantly strives to find the balance between the bizarre and the ordinary in his works. More about the films mentioned in the podcast: Chavo (Swedish title: Tjena tjavo) is the opening film in a trilogy of short films in a Roma setting that deals with topics such as identity, sexuality, origin and the burden that can occur when these parameters do not match. Short synopsis (eng/sve): Chavo, 2023, 15 min Tommy's grill is a meeting place for the Romani community. Here a motley crew of people gather to eat and talk. When a young man visits the restaurant one evening, rumors begin to spread and Tommy is forced to revisit traumatic memories. Facts: Original title: Tjena tjavo. Film type: Short. Category: Fiction. Director: Alecio Araci. Producers: Alicia Hansen & Bitte Andersson. Screenplay: Alecio Araci. Production country: Sweden. Production company: French Quarter Film AB. Classification: Suitable for all audiences. Dialogue: Swedish & Romany. Cast: Michell Tatter Alfredsson, Ado Mehic Dzafic, Rosmari Kaldaras, Ardijan Bunjoshi, Paul Dandos, Philip Torres Örning. Ensamheten gör så ont Den ljuva sömnen tar mig Jag somnar, jag vaknar inte igen Jag ger mig åt moder jord så hon kan sluka mig Mami which in Romany means grandmother is the second film in the trilogy and is told from the point of view of an elderly matriarch. The film is shown as a “work in progress”. Lil tuke means “A letter to you” in Romany and is the final film in the trilogy. In short, it is about secret relationships and being able to move on after an indescribably difficult loss. Screened as a work in progress with only short clips during the event. ENGELSKA (from the dialogue) While I age, you stay young. Soon you could have been my son. Time shows me no mercy, it takes me with it. When I see you again will you like me? When I walk with a cane. When my skin looks like wrinkled fabric. When I'm bald and my beard has turned gray. You might be able to ignore all that. Maybe I'll always be young in your eyes. ROMANI Sar so me phurovav tu aches terno. Na pala buteste shaj aves mro chavo. I rama na terdjol mange, lel man pesa. During the evening, Alecio screened some archive material filmed on Super 8, which now forms the basis for the development of a feature length mockumentary. Listen to Alecio in a radio interview for Radio Romano about Tjena tjavo. Published January 31 2023 by Margrethe Balok. Nightfall is a night of queer talks and screenings.

Ytterligare några år senare gjorde Neant Falk den meditativa konstfilmen Your Mind is Bigger than All the Supermarkets in the World, efter att ha studerat på Konstfack. Resultatet blev konstfilmen Your Mind is Bigger than All the Supermarkets in the World som fick fina recensioner och visades i fullsatta salonger på Folkets Bio. Filmografi: 1996 – Väninnor - berättelser från garderoben - dokumentärfilm, 2003 - Du ska nog se att det går över, dokumentärfilm, 2010 - Your Mind is Bigger than All the Supermarkets in the World, dokumentärfilm, 2011 - Nine Speeches on Violence by Three Wise Men, konstfilm, The Cleansing Ceremony med Nya Konstnärsklubben, 2018- Om filmerna: Väninnor - berättelser från garderoben, 1996, 53 min De är fem kvinnor i åldrarna 60 till 85 år och de är lesbiska. Femton år senare satte hon in samma annons igen. Ruby Rich YOUR MIND IS BIGGER THAN ALL THE SUPERMARKETS IN THE WORLD - Some guidance for a lost Westerner, 2010, 73 min Cecilia: Åh, jag har stora frågor till dig! Upul: Hur stora? Your Mind is Bigger than all the Supermarkets in the World är en 73 minuters stillsam resa där den största dramatiken är de tankegångar som sätts igång inom betraktaren. Joakim Rindå Premiärdatum: 7 mars 2010 Regissör & manus: Cecilia Neant Falk Land: Sverige (inspelad på Sri Lanka) Produktionsår: 2010 Produktionsbolag: Riot Reel & Bokomotiv AB Medverkande: Medtiationsläraren Upul Nishanta Gamage & Regissören Cecilia Neant Falk Längd: 73 min Producenter: Cecilia Neant Falk & Freddy Olsson Foto: Johan Rydberg & Cecilia Neant Falk Ljudmix: Owe Svensson Copyright: Cecilia Neant Falk Genre: Experimentell dokumentär Bildformat: 16:9, Färg Ljudformat: 5.1 Språk: engelska Textningsspråk: svenska & engelsk Översättning: Agneta Wirberg Textmakarna Distribution: Folkets Bio AB Extra material: Trailer: Your Mind is Bigger than all the Supermarkets in the World Sveriges Radio - Människor och tro: Kvartsamtal med Cecilia Neant Falk. This episode is in English This episode is a recording of the event Nightfall - Queer Talks & Screenings which took place on Zoom in April 15, 2021. Nightfall is a series of events hosted by SAQMI in both online and physical space. The point of Nightfall is to give a place for LGBTQ+ artists and filmmakers to talk about their work and processes - both for finished works and works in progress. During this nightfall we showed two films: Space is quite a lot of things by August Joensalo, An Ode to Self Exploration made by Sofia Aedo Zahou choreographed by Demba Sabally. Both films in this programme centered around the experience that we as trans and queer people go through of discovery and exploration of our identities. Where An Ode to Self Exploration uses the body as a site to explore and project this newfound identity, Space is quite a lot of things dives into the abstract and dreamlike quality of internal exploration so you get this nice contrast between public/private. Aesthetically there was also a really nice contrast between the two films, with An Ode to Self Exploration in the concrete city landscape and Space is quite a lot of things much more ethereal and natural. Good to note here that August was using the name Aniina during the time of this recording. Bridge to Nika & Eliot After talking to Demba and August more about their processes and visions for their work, we brought in two of those featured in August's film Elliot - who identifies as non-binary - and Nika - who identifies as a non-binary woman.* Here we wanted to continue this theme of self-exploration within our semi-public semi-private intercommunity space on a more personal level - to deepen the experience of the film. By bringing more personal experiences into the conversation to encourage those in the audience to share their experiences too. Through their practice, they propose alternative ways of being and existing in this world – ways that fall outside the binary of language, bodies, and identities. They are graduating from their MFA in Film at HDK-Valand in 2021. Homepage. Demba Sabally Demba is 24 years old and born and raised in Gothenburg, Sweden. Right now he's working in retail and studying on the side. He's always loved to dance and started voguing about 4 years ago, since then he's competed in Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen and Paris. Their interests include community organising, visual expression, giving people cool haircuts and cute animals. Nika Dahlberg-Melin Nika (b. 1986) is a visual artist based in Gothenburg, Sweden. She works in the intersection of photography and non-photographic visual languages, including sculpture, drawing, collage, written and printed text, and two-dimensional design. *During the podcast, Nika was described as identifying as non-binary at the time of recording when in reality she identified as a non-binary woman. This episode is in Swedish I det här avsnittet av SAQMI Play möter Anna Linder och Malin Holgersson konstnären Marie Falksten. Filmfakta: Regi: Tjejfilm, Manus: Marie Falksten, Mary Eisekivits, Annalena Öhrström, Filmfoto: Marie Falksten, Maria Brännström, Musik: Mary Eisikovits, Annbritt Ryde, Brittmarie Brax, Ljud: Annalena Öhrström, Stina Sundberg, Klippning: Marie Falksten Premiär: 3/10-1983, 29 min, Färg, Original 16 mm normalbild (1,37:1), Optisk mono, Produktionsbolag: Filmkollektivet Tjejfilm, Produktionsstöd av Socialstyrelsen, RFSL och RFSU, Filmlaboratorium Filmteknik AB. About Eva and Maria: (from Marie Falkstens archival material at SAQMI) Eva and Maria in love with each other! The film concentrates on the happiness and joy in a lesbian relationship, not the possible problems and conflicts. The two girls meet at a driving school. Here you have the awkwardness, the uncertainty and the exaltation in a first love. We follow Eva and Maria´s feelings evolve and see how their love matures. In the film are also Maria´s parents. Maria´s mom is understanding, she sees that their love is something that gives them happiness and strength, something positive for her daughter. Maria´s dad on the other hand feels both provoked and frightened by his daughter´s lesbianism. This is evident in his prejudiced outbreaks against Maria and in his lack of knowledge and understanding of another way of living. It focuses on the positive news happening within the LGBTQ+ community which definitely makes for a refreshing listen. His blog For the Love of Queers is a brilliant resource for LGBTQ+ history & activism & I’ve certainly learnt a whole lot myself since I started following it. The interview was of course recorded remotely; me in Dublin, Spencer in Manchester. We chatted about; why Spencer is driven through his work to shine a spotlight on the more positive aspects of our community the events from his childhood which made him think he might be gay why he didn’t want to be the first person to come out at school how he avoided a planned homophobic attack on him at school why he wasn’t happy with his friends reactions when he came out how he coped with those dreaded P.E. lessons and lots of other things (you’ll also hear my gay gasp once or twice)!!! “This is some Amazon dystopia!” In this episode of Rebel Dispatch, Holly, Klaudia, and Manda discuss the two latest episodes of Resistance, ‘The High Tower’ and ‘The Children from Tehar’. There’s some lengthy discussion about the political messages within both episodes, from the power dynamics on the Colossus, to our dear friend Comrade Neeku. A surprisingly lengthy amount of time is also spent discussing Kylo Ren, as well as everyone’s favourite Imperial, Rae Sloane. And, of course, it wouldn’t be an episode of Rebel Dispatch without some quality Queer Talk (and hey, we had actual material to discuss this time!), and some Episode IX theorising thrown in for good measure. Oh, and very importantly, there’s some Cape Conspiracy Theories. As always, Rebel Dispatch can be found on Twitter @_RebelDispatch and can be contacted by email at rebeldispatchpod@gmail.com. “Oh my god, it’s a Waffle House” In this episode of Rebel Dispatch, Holly and Klaudia are joined by the third host of the pod, Manda! All three hosts are finally together and there’s plenty to talk about! After discussing the Chuck Wendig situation, more time is spent sharing hopes, fears and expectations for The Mandalorian than any of the hosts honestly ever expected (can we dare say: cautiously optimistic?). But, of course, the true feature of the episode is discussion around the first 3 (or 4, depending on how you’re counting it) episodes of Star Wars: Resistance. It’s positivity all round as discussion goes deep into the politics of The Colossus, first impressions of the characters, theories on who’s secretly working for the First Order, and, of course, some quality Queer Talk. This film addresses the need to bring awareness of LGBTQ childrenand youth within Latino American communities. It deals with homophobia from a yet unavailable perspective in our communities: that of a young, Latina girl. Films addressing homophobia often center teenagers or adults as protagonist, but the experiences of LGBTQ children remain invisible. The film provides young girls with artistic options in which to see themselves reflected. By focusing the film on precocious and precious children, we hope it provides a space for us as Latino Americans to teach tolerance and acceptance of LGBTQ children and adults. Ultimately, it is a story of dreams, hopes and friendship. This film deals with themes of identity, coming out, anti-bullying, activism and friendship. What makes this film very special is that all of the characters are Chicana females.  "I am committed to casting all Xicana actors and having as many women in leadership and creative roles behind the scenes." - Karla Legaspy hatchfund.org/project/gold_star_short_film Guest | Karla Legaspy Host | Xavier Mejia   Gold Star (short film) on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/GOLD-STAR-The-Short-Film/1409237732701349?ref=aymt_homepage_panel
