Have you ever put a teacher a little far up on a pedestal or giving away your power when it comes to your spiritual practice? If so, today's episode is for you. Our guest did just that, she's sharing her story and the lessons she learned on the way.For today's episode, I sat down with Lopa van der Mersch. Lopa is a lifelong health seeker and founder & CEO of Rasa Koffee, a coffee alternative made of adaptogenic herbs. She spent years studying esoteric spiritual practices (& found herself in two cults!); has had a whole slew of health challenges that have had her seeking alternative therapies from Ayurveda to Functional Medicine to Shamanism for over a decade. Today, we sat down to talk about embracing nuance dogma and why we shouldn't outsource our spiritual sovereignty.Listen to the episode here:MY 5 BIGGEST TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE1- Discernment is the best tool to get clear on whether a teacher has your highest interest at heart or not. See if the teacher is pushing you in a way that is generative for you or because they are getting something out of it. Some red flags: it's not ok to study with another teacher, you don't have a full sense of freedom, they hold your devotion as something they need and is owed to them, they think they only hold the truth, not open to being questioned, don't encourage you to have your own experience.2- To balance faith and discernment rest in your own experience. Be open to what comes, connect to your body and your heart, and then be willing to question it.3- Spiritual sovereignty starts with having a strong sense of self. Self-knowledge and self-trust are the base. Stay open to your teacher's opinion, but don't put them on a pedestal in a way that what they say has more value than what we think and feel.4- To start to take charge of your spirituality, with self-knowledge, you need to practice self-acceptance. As you cultivate a healthy sense of your needs, you start setting and upholding boundaries. Over time, you build more self-trust and own your voice more fully.5- We have so much input from the outside that we can start to question who we are. Our experiences are there to teach us and to give us parts of ourselves we need to see, to open to, to heal, or to develop.EPISODE ANNOUNCEMENTS:

This week, we are lucky enough to talk again with Brandy Edwards, who is a Texas attorney turned empowerment speaker and coach. She has a huge emphasis on self-love. She created the self-love challenge to motivate, empower, and challenge women. Honestly, we had so much fun connecting and realize we have so much in common. We just couldn't cut this episode short, so we had to make it into two pieces. I hope that you will enjoy part two of Brandy's episode, and if you haven't checked out her first episode, circle back and be sure to listen to episode #49 too. You have more time than you think! Have you ever said “I’d love to do that but I just don’t have time right now?” I know I have. But I have a question for you - do you really not have time to do the things that you love or that bring you joy? In this week’s episode, the point is to strive to create more time for the things you want to do and that bring you joy. As I’ve said before on this podcast, we only have one life that we know of - so why not spend as much time as we possibly can doing the things that bring us joy? Think that feminism is something that only activists can practice? Think that being a feminist means being anti men? Think again! Thordis Elva, renowned TED speaker, author and Activist gives us insight on how to add feminist practices to our daily lives. One particularly great take away was how to incorporate this notion with our kids. If you follow Thordis on Instagram you will get a glimpse into the way that she raises her three boys and especially her eldest son Frey who has more than once stood up to bullies at school because of inequality towards girls in his class. What I love about Thordis is her passion and brilliance for these huge issues and also her ability to share her vulnerabilities in real life and being a mom to five kids and also her sense of humour. If you haven’t already listened to her incredible interview all about the unbelievable story of her twin baby boys, bed rest and their premature birth then head back to episode 32 and hear her amazing story about how social media helped carry her through this really difficult time in her life. Today is a big topic but so important to talk about. This week I have the pleasure of speaking with two of my former colleagues and now retired teachers Jill Calvert Goetz and Wendy Calvert Morris. These two ladies are veteran teachers who are not only best friends but sisters. I wanted to have them on the show because they have been so influential in my own teaching career and with this rapidly changing school system and the teaching job itself I have found it so valuable to have mentorship and advice from colleagues who have more or less seen it all. My favourite take away from this episode is the advice that both Wendy and Jill give to newer teachers. This week's episode is in honor of the veterans for Remembrance Day and anyone globally who has been affected by war. When I think about Remembrance Day, I think about the people who willingly signed up for some of the most treacherous, dangerous and uncomfortable duties and jobs and how they did it with pride and enthusiasm knowing that they were heading into something that was greater than them on an individual scale. My grandpa was part of a generation that selflessly marched off to war with pride and honor. Let's remember those incredibly resilient and brave souls who marched into the great wars but also for those wars since and ongoing. Let us remember those who have been affected by generational trauma and PTSD as the residual effects are brought back with the veterans. Let us not judge or scoff at those modern day warriors who are choosing to champion sacrifice and soldier on for a cause greater than themselves. Let's remember that when we decide to show up for something, that we do it with pride and honor the way that our grandparents did. In today's episode, Lindsay interviews Jenn Harper, founder of Cheekbone Beauty. Jenn was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario and relocated to the Niagara Region where she was raised and developed a passion for cosmetics. For Jenn, make-up has become a means of expression that she feels has amazing power. There needed to be a brand that was made in Canada, that was never tested on animals, free of all the junk and that gave back to the First Nations community. The brand did not exist, so Jenn created it! Through countless hours over the past two and a half years, Cheekbone Beauty was born! In addition to Cheekbone’s mission, Jenn strives to educate as many Canadians as possible about the Residential School System and the effects it has had on her family and friends through decades of generational trauma. Jenn speaks regularly to university, college and high school students about social entrepreneurship, empathy and the history of her First Nations family. Jenn has also been invited to speak to various entrepreneur groups, women in business associations, Apple Canada, and First Nations organizations across Canada. Shut up about Gratitude Already! Okay, so here is the thing I need to address before we get going too far into season 2. You guys I cannot believe the amount of people in my life who I absolutely LOVE and adore, like I’m talking they are my friends and family who don’t even listen to my podcast because they think it’s too positive and happy and that they just can’t live up to it. Oh my GOSH you guys! I need to clear this whole misconception up! Yes the title of the podcast is My Gratitude Attitude but dude, that does NOT mean that we are all about perfection and positivity over here! No freakin’ way! I am all about realistic expectations people. But here’s the thing. This summer I received one of the most touching direct messages through facebook by a gal who had attended our emPOWERed Rest Retreat earlier this year and she literally asked me and my sister if there was something special about us because we seemed to always have a positive perspective on things. She believed that she was a negative person and didn’t have it in her to change her mindset and wanted to know our thoughts on this. I was so flattered that she thinks I have a positive mindset because I work REALLY hard at this almost hourly - like I’m not joking. But also I had to write her back straight away and clear up this myth about me and the positivity thing. Here is the truth. There was about a ten year span in my life starting in my late teens running into my mid-twenties where I was miserable and so negative. I thought that I was too cool for any of the positivity stuff and that it was all hocus pocus. I honestly did not even TRUST a person who seemed too cheery and positive. If you had told my mid-twenty year old self that in ten years time I would be recording a podcast about gratitude and other mindset shifting stuff I would literally have laughed in your face and probably flipped you the bird. I hate that it took some really challenging and life threatening stuff to shake my brain into this space but truthfully that is what did it. If you don’t know the whole story head back to the first episode of season 1 to get a better understanding of why I chose gratitude and how my life view shifted, but the list of it is that we had major health scares with both my mom and my sister and I realized that life is too short to waste feeling shitty or being negative. We have NO clue how long we are here on this planet for a) and b) this planet that we are here on is pretty freakin’ spectacular and if you don’t believe me go and book a trip to somewhere you’ve always wanted to go or if that’s not possible then check out a planet earth episode or just go to youtube and search “amazing things about planet earth”. Like, we literally get to be here one time that we know of, and I just realized that there is so much beauty and wonder and awe here that I wanted to live my life looking through that lens so I ditched the whole negativity thing. I ditched being super judgy of other people and places and instead I leaned into seeing the best in people and trying to find the silver lining in situations. Does that mean that I don’t acknowledge or understand that there are really crappy things going on on our planet? Absolutely not. I am fully aware of it. But I am realistic and this is how - I know that if I continuously dwell on the negative events or injustices that take place here on earth that I will be of absolutely no service to others because my own depression and anxiety will take over. So, instead I have chosen to work extremely hard at changing my own brain chemistry using tips and strategies that I share in both season one and two in order to better myself and you so that we can serve this world with our gifts and unique talents. And honestly that is one of my favourite things about this podcast is that we really examine different practical ways that we can physically and mentally change your thought patterns. I mean how freaking cool is that??? Who would have thought that you can change your brain?! In the same way that you can tone a muscle and change it’s shape you can do this to your brain and your own thoughts, beliefs and habits. I truly think that this fact is REMARKABLE and in this way, I whole heartedly believe that we can change this world. So, I hope that you are with me. I hope that you agree with me that realistically, life is just so much more enjoyable when you’re feeling happy and joyful and are able to have a laugh instead of dwelling on the negative. I hope that if you are struggling to get to that place that you know that you are NOT alone and that I am totally here to support you with this podcast and my mentorship program. I know that you have unique and special gifts within you that want to shine through, so stick with me, do the work and have fun along the way! I cannot wait for season 2 to get rolling! I recently went to an event called the Atelier where I heard a number of inspirational entrepreneurial women speak and one of those women happened to be Melissa Leong. Now Melissa is the financial adviser to The Social and has been featured on many media outlets and has written for the financial post. She had such great wisdom to share that I bought her book at the conference and even stood in line like a groupie to have her sign it! As soon as I saw what she wrote in my book I was so excited to dig into the pages - she signed it Make Life Rich. And I just knew that somehow gratitude would be somewhere in her book. I was right. Now yes you could take stock of all of the “things you have” but in Leong’s book Happy Go Money she doesn’t point us in that direction. In fact, she touts study after study that demonstrate that true happiness comes from social connections and community with others. This week I talk with Shannon Crow, the host of The Connected Yoga Teacher podcast and consultant for yoga teachers. She shares what she has learned (and continues to learn) as a yoga entrepreneur. Shannon is passionate about this work so that yoga teachers have more time and energy to share the yoga that lights them up. She became a yoga teacher in 2006 and continues to teach weekly private classes in Owen Sound, Ontario, specializing in Yoga for Pelvic Health. Shannon is dedicated to helping yoga teachers define their niche (share their unique yoga) and developed the Yoga for Pelvic Health Teacher Training. In today's Brain Changing episode... Overall, the main message I want you to walk away with is that we don’t need fixing. We honestly don’t. And if we feel like we do - we will more often than not go out and get the fixing that we feel is right for us at that moment in time. When we stop trying to fix someone else, we instead allow space for relationships to blossom and flourish. We can laugh and enjoy each other when we stop trying to fix problems that don’t exist. This week on the MGA podcast I chat with Lopa Van Der Mersch. Lopa is a lifelong health seeker and founder & CEO of Rasa Koffee, the first coffee alternative to offer functional health benefits through adaptogenic herbs. She is also a mother of two children under 3, and credits her ability to do All of The Things in large part to the help of adaptogens, herbs that help your body adapt under stress. Lopa co-founded Rasa Koffee two years ago, and spent much of that time shoring up the complicated logistics and operations back-end, before fully launching Rasa to a wider audience. Rasa is founded on the belief that by bringing life-giving adaptogenic herbs into your morning beverage ritual, you can actually transform your days; and this effect has been seen time and again as customers relay how Rasa has genuinely changed their lives. On today's My Gratitude Attitude podcast, we enjoyed a very deep discussion of holistic healing with Melanie Phillips, a Clinical Ayruvedic Specialist who has studied medicine in the Ayruvedic tradition for over a decade. Melanie is the co-author of Your Irresistible Life: 4 Seasons of Self-Care through Ayurveda and Yoga Practices that Work and the author of bestselling book: Living After Loss: A Soulful Guide to Freedom. Melanie helps people to heal and balance the mind, body, spirit connection by using yoga and Ayrudeva, as well as many other natural healing techniques. In today's conversation, we talked about a variety of concepts and practices that can be used to enhance your quality of life, encourage growth, and promote overall healing in all areas of life. Using Ayruveda, we can find our own personal way to live a more freeing lifestyle, rid ourselves of self-limiting ideas of who we are, and ultimately liberate ourselves from our eternal suffering. Using gratitude, we can rewire our mind, body, and spirit connection and find more peace and joy in the moment. We really appreciated hearing about all of Melanie's ideas and practices, and we hope you do too! Lopa Van Der Mersch is the founder of Rasa Koffee (https://rasakoffee.com/), the world's first coffee alternative to offer functional benefits through adaptogenic herbs. And while there are many in the biohacking world who are hardcore coffee junkies (myself included) for reasons beyond just the morning pick-me-up effects, there are some who just can't integrate it into their lives. Not everyone is a fan of coffee. Whether for reasons of sensitivity to caffeine, allergy, an intolerance to coffee on some level, or just because it gives you a serious case of the jitters, there are many reasons you may not be a daily coffee drinker. And although there is always the possibility of turning to tea, for some, tea just doesn't cut it in giving the same nootropic, focus, and energy benefits that coffee provides. Luckily, Rasa Koffee is not only an alternative to standard coffee, but a powerful adaptogen blend that can aid your body in so many ways, beyond just stimulating effects. In this episode, we discuss the herbal make up of Rasa Koffee, what makes the compounds in it so special, some of the health and healing benefits of these herbs, what adaptogens are and why they're so essential for humans living in a modern society, how adaptogens can extremely effectively beat stress, how they can help your body maintain homeostasis, what eustress is and why your body needs it, sustainability in business and what Rasa Koffee are doing to maintain this, how there are almost always two sides to a story when it comes to any supplement or compound, Lopa's morning tea ceremony practice, and so much more. In today's MGA podcast, I sat down for a conversation with the owner of PranaVidaStyle, Amelia Barnes. A hardworking mother, wife, and entrepreneur, Amelia's dream started in her basement where she hand cut all the fabric for her designs herself, and would have them put together by a seamstress while she worked on marketing her business. Originally inspired to start her clothing label by working as a yoga instructor, Amelia's company has grown exponentially. From hand cutting in her basement, to a fully manufactured clothing line where she uses eco-friendly textiles to create her unique and highly valued designs. In our conversation today, we touched on a number of subjects relating to how Amelia manages her work and family life, as well as plant-based living, and how she has used gratitude to heal and grow in her own life. I hope you really enjoy today's conversation! If you are interested in learning more about Amelia's business, check her out on Pranavidastyle.com, or Instagram @pranavidastyle, and @ameliakyoga. For today’s podcast I had the fortunate opportunity to have a conversation with my friend Diane Liska about her journey and mission as a therapist who uses holistic healing methods including yoga and psychotherapy to help people work through their own healing process. Diane has been practicing psychotherapy for over 10 years and has learned and grown so much through her own healing practice, as well as in her work. In our conversation today, we got to talk about so many beautiful topics from how Diane began her journey and how she has changed through the process, to how she managed her family life with her work, and so many more eye-opening experiences that she went through along the way. We will also learn about some of her own practices for cultivating gratitude, self-compassion, and connection. Working and living in a state of flow has changed Diane’s life so much since she took a leap of faith and stepped into her heart's path. We hope you feel the light and wisdom that Diane shared with us to be enlightening and healing. In this brain changing episode, Lindsay shares how the intention of gratitude propels you into the very things you want to bring into your life. Listen-in to hear how a highly visual mindset can either 'make it' or 'break it' in getting us to our goals. When we visualize things, we can do one of two things: we can perpetuate fear, worry, or upset or... we can focus on visualizing the very things that we want to draw into our lives. We really do have the power to attract what we want into our lives with the perspective that we choose to focus upon! “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” - Henry Ford Find out more about our wonderful sponsors: Rasa Koffee: http://www.mygratitudeattitude.com/rasa.html Prana Vida: https://www.pranavidastyle.com Sign up for Mom and Baby Yoga with MOGA Use coupon code GRATITUDE to receive 20% off of the online mommy and baby yoga. https://mogamoms.vhx.tv You can find Lindsay Lesage at www.mygratitudeattitude.com and our private Facebook Group. I met Florencia Fridman at a weekly cacao ceremony at the Assemblage in New York. My life hasn’t been the same since I’ve introduced cacao ceremony into my life – this ancient plant medicine has been affecting how I share my truth, both on personal and business levels. In this episode, we will talk about: What is cacao ceremony How cacao works on a physical level Why cacao is the medicine of love and how it can impact your business The three important questions that the Maya ask to help you manifest your purpose Where to buy ceremonial cacao How to connect with the dream world The importance of morning rituals Connecting to your dreams and following through Bringing ancient wisdom to the modern culture How to translate divine guidance into actions and a successful business The power of consistency The biggest misconception about cacao How cacao can support you in managing depression Can you have too much cacao? (for those of you into ceremonial cacao, you get me!) Why it’s best to not pair cacao with caffeine The best superfoods to pair with cacao The importance of honoring ancient traditions What role social media plays in bringing ancient traditions into the modern world Mentioned in this episode: Shop Cacao Laboratory ceremonial cacao Abraham-Hicks - law of attraction videos on YouTube How to make ceremonial cacao with Florencia on @breakfastcriminals Learn more about crystals in Crystals IRL online course Rasa Koffee herbal caffeine-free coffee alternative (I love pairing it with cacao) Connect with Florencia Fridman: Cacaolaboratory.com @cacaolaboratory @veggieflow About Florencia Fridman: Florencia is a natural-born healer and self-empowerment artist working with heart opening therapies involving holistic nutrition, Ceremonial Grade Cacao, yoga, sound journeys, and breath work as instruments for transformation; creating a safe vessel for self-exploration. She facilitates ceremonies in different cities within the US and Central/South America. Her curiosity to learn more about her Mapuche roots and connection to the land brought her to the exploration of the sacred. Although her family is Mapuche, Florencia has found a strong calling to the Maya traditions and has felt a deep connection to the land of Guatemala, where she feels most at home. She has worked with Maya elders from Guatemala, studied at Las Piramides Del Ka-- a metaphysics training that dives deep into the consciousness of dreams and meditation, has been working with rebirthing (a breathing modality) since the age of 8 with further training in her late teens, and received her yoga certification from Laughing Lotus in 2013. In 2016, Florencia and her brother started a distribution company known as Cacao Lab to bridge the gap between the modern culture and the indigenous communities. Her mission is to expand the hearts and minds of those who are ready to wake up. Bringing consciousness to the importance of honoring the indigenous traditions and the indigenous communities living these traditions. Episode #189 with Lopa van der Mersch- Adapting to Stress. I am a mama to 2 boys, an entrepreneur, and lifelong health-seeker. After my first son was born, my health quest met up with my mothering to birth Rasa Koffee, an adaptogenic coffee alternative that I co-created to help me cope with the stressors of motherhood. Adaptogens are herbs that help your body adapt to stress, and so replacing my morning beverage with Rasa was a natural fit to support my health. I am also obsessed with tea ceremony and love traveling, Ayurveda, and cooking, and am pretty much constantly cracking inappropriate jokes.
