Friend of the Show Screen Time Kota (https://www.tiktok.com/@screentimekota) returns to discuss the 1985 sci-fi film Enemy Mine. This hidden gem of an ‘80s sci-fi film has everything you want: practical effects, elaborate sets, miniature spaceships, matte paintings, and incredible makeup. Even more impressive is the performance of Louis Gossett Jr. underneath the intricate alien makeup. He and Dennis Quaid (a human) get stranded on a planet together; their species hate each other more than anything else… but somehow, they'll need to learn to get along if they want to survive this. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! This week on Catching Up On Cinema, Kyle and Trevor review Wolfgang Petersen's, Enemy Mine (1985)! An over-budgeted box office flop with a checkered production history, Enemy Mine (1985) is a charming, if uneven, sci-fi fable. On the subject of “checkered production history,” the story goes that director Wolfgang Petersen was courted to take the helm of Enemy Mine over 5 weeks into the films' production, after original director Richard Loncraine apparently failed to meet the producer's expectations. After director Petersen paused and rewound production to begin anew and remake the film from whole cloth, the production budget of Enemy Mine would essentially double. To make matter worse, the film failed to generate interest at the box office, and Enemy Mine would go on to be regarded as a financial failure. Despite failing to find an audience during its theatrical run, Enemy Mine has since gone on to become somewhat of a cult classic, largely on the strength of its handsome production design, and winning performances from both Louis Gossett Jr. and Dennis Quaid. Here's a question. What role does love play in your leadership? Before we start, I want to acknowledge the death of someone who played a big role in helping Chris and I create the film editing company that we built in the ‘90s and 2000s. Jim Garrett was a brilliant businessman and a gentleman. He was the founder of the award winning and internationally recognized production company, Garrett and Partners, working with directors like John Schlesinger, Nick Roeg, Ken Russell and Richard Loncraine along the way. I've posted a link to his obituary in the London Times in this week's show notes. When we were conceiving our film editing company in 1994, Jim sat down with Chris and I over lunch in London and gave us advice that formed the foundational DNA of a business which is still thriving almost thirty years later. Many of the principles and practices on which that business operates today came from that lunch. All of us who have spent any part of our careers working at the original Lookinglass or at the Whitehouse film editing companies owe him our thanks. His impact was and is enormous. And now, on with the show. This week's guest is Devika Bulchandani. She's the global CEO of Ogilvy. And her view of leadership includes an impassioned belief that seemed so obvious to me once she said it but which I have never heard before. The business of running a business does not usually contain much discussion of love. You hear people say occasionally, “I love what I'm doing” or “I love where I work”. You can see evidence of passion in some people, particularly business founders. But the idea of saying “I love you” to a co-worker will send tremors down the backs of HR and Talent leaders across the entire spectrum of the creative industries. And yet, as Devika asks, wouldn't the world be better by the way if we all just felt more of it? We live in a time of apparently limitless upheaval. And we will spend roughly a quarter of that time at our jobs. Shouldn't part of that upheaval be to challenge the norms under which we've been working? Including the possibility that “I love you” might be a leading indicator of what it means to be a more human leader. Where do you draw the line? And why?

Cum on Feel the Podcazt! This week Pop Screen celebrates the festive period with a band who, without a sleigh bell in earshot, conjure up the spirit of Christmas. It can only be Slade, who got debutant director Richard Loncraine to make their one and only feature film, the oft-mistitled (not least by us) Flame, in 1975. Despite being released at the height of their popularity, it wasn't a hit - so much so that Mick, this week's co-host, heard the album a ridiculous 46 years prior to actually sitting down and watching the film. Flame, though, has found plenty of keepers since that initially unsuccessful release, not least Mark Kermode, who described it as "the Citizen Kane of rock musicals". On this episode of Pop Screen, we discuss all aspects of the film, including its position as yet another unexpectedly downbeat 1970s British rock movie, Slade's relationship to glam rock as a movement, the fact that this was very nearly going to be a spoof of a classic science fiction franchise, the multiple comebacks Slade enjoyed in the 1980s and 1990s, and which of Loncraine's later films would be improved by Noddy Holder. It's hard to credit it, but a podcast which frequently wanders off topic to ponder the idea of Noddy Holder in Wimbledon doesn't always pull in the sponsorship money. If, as we're told in the Hebrew Bible, "God saw all that He had made, and behold it was very good" (Genesis 1:31), how are we to understand physical imperfection? As "mistakes" by the divine? Now is the winter of our discontent, made glorious summer by the release of this week's episode! Andy Bowman from the Geek 101 and Monkey Off My Backlog podcasts joins me to discuss Richard Loncraine's explosive 1995 adaptation of Shakespeare's RICHARD III, featuring a breakout performance from Ian McKellan as the Bard's nastiest villain. This sets the story in an alternate history version of WWII era London, and doesn't skimp on modern-era sex, violence, and style. Hosted by Steve Guntli Logo by Corinne Kempen Twitter: @rogerslistpod Email: rogerslistpod@gmail.com Instagram: @rogerslistpodLetterboxd: https://boxd.it/7ESRsNext week's episode: Dark City

As horror fans, the arrival of Shudder in 2015 came as a blessing to us all. It's made for us, the fans, by fans of the genre and we love it here. (We haven't been paid to say that either) With that in mind, onto EPISODE 123 then... This week, we are absolutely delighted to be joined by the Director of Programming at SHUDDER... It's SAM ZIMMERMAN! The film? THE HAUNTING OF JULIA!  Based on the novel Julia by Peter Straub and also known as FULL CIRCLE, The Haunting of Julia, while by no means a bad film is certainly one that is under-seen and in need of a little love and new eyes upon it.  Directed by Richard Loncraine and starring Rosemary's Baby's Mia Farrow, 2001: A Space Odyssey's Keir Dullea and national treasure Tom Conti, this is an effective and surprisingly dark little chiller. It's not the easiest film to find, certainly in the UK, but there are various versions flying around on YouTube.  The synopsis is as follows:  Magnus (Keir Dullea) and Julia Lofting (Mia Farrow) have a happy marriage until one morning when their daughter Kate (Sophie Ward) begins choking. Unsure what to do, Julia attempts a tracheotomy, inadvertently causing Kate's death. Julia heads to a sanitarium to recover, and when Magnus asks that she come home, she prefers to buy a new house in London and live alone there. Magnus frets over Julia's sanity, while Julia becomes convinced that her house is haunted by the spirit of a little girl.   Please note that this podcast may contain strong language and even stronger Scottish accents.  Also, why not pop over and take a look at our Patreon page? In Richard III, the conclusion to the War of the Roses tetralogy, Richard of York connives, lies, and murders his way to the top. In the process, he dispatches his brothers, nephews, and his own wife with aplomb, plenty of puns, a broken fourth wall that paved the way for House of Cards, and a plot that both Abraham Lincoln and John Wilkes Booth infamously loved. As the tyrannical anti-hero of Shakespeare’s early masterpiece, Richard III stands without peer. //WORKS REFERENCED // James Mann, The Great Rift: Dick Cheney, Colin Powell, and the Broken Friendship That Defined an Era (2020) // CREDITS // Intro Music: Jon Sayles, "The Witches' Dance" (composed by anonymous); Outro Music: Jon Sayles, “Saltarello” (composed by anonymous); Illustrative excepts from: Richard III, dir. Twenty seven episodes, right here in twenty-seventeen! It starts in respectable territory, as Nick read lost-classic adult-comic Miracleman by Alan Moore (credited here as "The Original Writer", because that's how the guy rolls), Gary Leach, Alan Davis and co, while Alastair followed the Oscar nominations with interest. Such interest, in fact, that we stop for a longer chat about them (5:16). It's a smooth transition from there to a full review of hot Oscar favourite La La Land (12:06), and then on to the new Netflix adaptation of Lemony Snicket's A Series Of Unfortunate Events (26:12), a show with a thoroughly excellent theme tune. (Don't worry, we've included a clip.) Thirdly, and a small jump away from the rest, we've heard 11 Short Stories Of Pain & Glory (38:54), the new album from the Dropkick Murphys. Is it too screamy for Nick, or can he withstand it? Finally, we cover Richard III (45:35) - specifically the 1995 Richard Loncraine movie starring Ian McKellen. It's certainly got points to make about fascism rising in the Western world, which may or may not be interesting given recent news events.
