After being exposed to the so-called bad boys of bodybuilding with Double Trouble last year, Dave decided to pick the breakthrough movie for Peter and David Paul. The Canon Films sword-and-sorcery adventure, The Barbarians. The Barbarians (1987) was a quintessential example of 1980s sword-and-sorcery filmmaking, helmed by cult director Ruggero Deodato, best known for his controversial work on Cannibal Holocaust. Shot on location in Italy and Yugoslavia, the film embraced the rugged landscapes and ancient ruins of Eastern Europe to create its gritty, fantastical world. The producers, including the legendary Cannon Group, aimed to capitalize on the success of films like Conan the Barbarian, infusing the project with a mix of campy action and over-the-top theatrics. Real-life bodybuilder twin brothers Peter and David Paul, dubbed "The Barbarian Brothers," were cast as the lead warriors, their muscular physiques and comedic chemistry serving as the film's primary draw. The production leaned heavily into the aesthetics of the genre, with elaborate costumes, oversized weapons, and practical effects dominating the visual style. Special care was given to creating the film's larger-than-life set pieces, which often featured a mix of brutal combat and exaggerated physical comedy. The soundtrack, composed by Pino Donaggio, added an epic, adventurous tone to the film. While The Barbarians was far from a critical success, it gained a cult following for its unabashed embrace of cheesy spectacle and campy performances. Deodato's direction ensured that the film maintained a self-aware sense of humor, making it a memorable, if not particularly polished, entry into the sword-and-sorcery genre. They grow into mighty warriors determined to reclaim their freedom. Separated as children and forced into gladiatorial combat, the brothers reunite and embark on a quest to rescue their people and recover a magical ruby that holds the key to their tribe's survival. Along the way, they face off against Kadar's forces, monstrous creatures, and treacherous obstacles, relying on their strength, courage, and occasionally bumbling teamwork. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

Director: Brian De Palma. Actores: Sissy Spacek (Carrie White), Piper Laurie (Margaret White), Amy Irving (Sue Snell), John Travolta (Billy), William Katt (Tommy), Nancy Allen (Chris), P. J. Soles (Norma) y Betty Buckley (Miss Collins). Let it burn! Ascoltiamo brani tratti dai film “Carrie”, “Blow out”, “Sotto il vestito niente”, “Nero veneziano”, “Via degli specchi”, “La Sorgente dell'Amore”, “Don't look now”.

Met o.a. Uit Il grande passo: - La Luna 4'08” - L'incontro dei fratelli 1'35” - Il grande passo (tema di Dario) 2'23” Uit Don't Look Now (fragmenten): - I Colori Di Dicembre (Laura's Theme I) - Searching for Laura pt I - John's Theme - Through the streets of Venice - Laura Comes Back

La fantascienza è il neorealismo del futuro. Scrivevano così, sessant'anni fa, alcuni critici dei «Cahiers du cinéma», in piena era atomica e agli esordi dell'avventura umana nello spazio.

Roger Corman's always made profitable films, and sometimes that meant stealing some ideas from current releases to capitalize on the similarities. That's certainly the case with the film he produced that ripped off Steven Spielberg's Jaws: Joe Dante's Piranha. Often, these films fell into legal issues, but with this film, Spielberg himself gave it his blessing and Universal stopped its injunctions. With that, we're able to enjoy and talk about one of Dante's early films. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Aquatic Killers series with Dante's 1978 film Piranha. We talk about the nature of rip-offs and how this one feels like it's a bit more than just a rip-off. We chat about the nature of Dante's comedy and horror, particularly how it pairs with the script by none other than John Sayles. We look at the story and chat about the tropes it contains but also how much fun it is. We touch on some of the actors and why they work well in this film. We laugh at a story Andy shares about watching it with his 10-year-old son. And we revel in the greatness that is Pino Donaggio's score. It's not a great film but it's a ton of fun. There is something wackadoo about these endings--they're over the top, chaotic, full of screaming and sweeping Pino Donaggio melodies, and they leave things on an unpredictable note that is both unresolved and completely satisfying. The Next Reel by The Next Reel Film Podcasts

Brian De Palma had been making feature films for almost a decade before he made Carrie in 1976, but it was this film that became his first blockbuster and really pushed him to the next level. By making an adaptation of the first book by an up-and-coming writer at the time, Stephen King, and turning it into a very effective and frightening psychological horror film, De Palma created a classic that is nearly as effective (if a bit dated) as it was when first released. Join us -- Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we continue our 1976 series with Carrie. We talk about De Palma and his filmmaking style, particularly how he uses the film tools at his disposal to enhance the genre in which he's working as well as to explore the boundaries of what he can with the medium. We chat about the wonderful actors, from Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie all the way to down to Edie McClurg, and how wonderful they all are, if not quite frightening in how they represent roles in our collective bad high school memories. We discuss the nature of the filmmaking style, balancing the worlds of innocence with that of horror — good versus evil. And we talk about some of De Palma's regular collaborators and what they bring to the table, from composer Pino Donaggio to art director Jack Fisk. It's a great horror film that has stood the test of time and we have a great time chatting about it. Tune in!
