Find out more on our website: https://bit.ly/3wWXVvr There is a ‘Commonwealth Advantage'. A Commonwealth country's trade with another member is likely to be a third to a half more than with a non-member – so concluded an influential 2010 paper, “Trading Places: The ‘Commonwealth Effect' Revisited” by Joanna Bennett, Paul Chappell, Howard Reed, and Dhananjayan Sriskandarajah, sponsored by the Royal Commonwealth Society and the Worshipful Company of World Traders. The UK experienced the Brexit vote of 2016 and leaving the EU in 2021, while the world has experienced a tremendous amount of geopolitical change, even war. Trade agreements proliferate, while trade relations become more fraught and less multi-lateral. Some pundits claim that globalisation is going into retreat. How can the UK grow its role in world trade using this Commonwealth Advantage? This webinar draws upon the work of Lord Marland and the Commonwealth Enterprise & Investment Council in growing the business and economic links among Commonwealth countries to explore what the future of intra-Commonwealth trade may hold, and what the role of the Commonwealth as a trade association might presage. Speaker: Lord Marland is chairman of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council. He retired as the Prime Minister's Trade Envoy and chairman of the business ambassador network on 1 January 2014. Lord Marland is the former chairman of the Commonwealth Business Council and was Minister for the Department of Energy and Climate Change in 2010 and subsequently for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. Lord Marland was one of the founding directors of Jardine Lloyd Thompson plc a multinational insurance business, and he founded the Jubilee insurance company. He led the acquisitions of: Janspeed Ltd (automotive engineering and manufacturing) Hunter Boot Ltd Insurance Capital Partners Jubilee Insurance Ltd WH Ireland Ltd (stockbroker) Wisden Cricketer Ltd Tamara Mellon, LLC (fashion) He is Chairman of Tickets for Troops and the Churchill Centre, President of The Commonwealth Youth Orchestra and Choir, Trustee of Peggy Guggenheim (UK) and Atlantic Partnership, and Patron of Salisbury and South Wiltshire Cricket.
Dr Hillary Briffa looks at what characterises small states, their challenges, and the strategies they utilise to overcome these. She argues that small states can very successfully protect their autonomy and security, and exert considerable influence. When major powers clash, or grow more competitive, the historical record shows that small states are the first to be buffeted by the actions of their larger counterparts. Small states do not set the international agenda. This means that if the fears of a breakdown of the rules-based order are well-founded, it will have profound implications for their security. Thus, these actors must look within their own armoury – at the tactics and strategies available to them, within certain bounds – and consider how much leverage they can exert within the context in which they operate. Can small states do anything more than move swiftly to avoid being trampled when elephants collide? This talk will examine the strategies pursued by small states to safeguard their autonomy (including ‘strategic hedging' and ‘seeking shelter'); as well as innovative means of projecting influence (ranging from the harnessing of multilateralism to bind great power behaviour, to serving as ‘smart states' in the international system). Today, increasing antagonism between great powers is already creating serious dilemmas for smaller international actors, and this is likely to intensify in the near future. However, the ability of small states to strategically navigate risk and influence the behaviour of Great Powers means that they can be expected to adapt to these changes. As small states navigate a fading rules-based order, this talk will argue that they have several time-tested strategies in reserve. Dr Hillary Briffa is a Lecturer in National Security Studies and the Assistant Director of the Centre for Defence Studies in the Department of War Studies at King's College London, where she read for her Ph.D, asking whether small states can have a grand strategy. She is also a founding member of the Centre for Grand Strategy at King's, where she serves as the research lead for the Climate Change and International Order portfolio. Previously, she has taught courses across the spectrum of global politics, international relations, defence, foreign policy, security and strategy at the Royal College of Defence Studies, the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, University College London, Birkbeck University of London, and Queen Mary University of London. Beyond academia, she served as Malta's official Youth Ambassador to the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) for three years, and worked at the Malta High Commission to the UK throughout Malta's tenure as Commonwealth Chair-in-Office. After running peace-building projects in Eastern and Central Europe, in 2015 she was appointed an Associate Fellow of the Royal Commonwealth Society, and in 2016 became a recipient of the U.S. State Department's inaugural Emerging Young Leaders award.
Governor Phil Bryant (2012-2020) joins America's Roundtable Radio co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy for a conversation on Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky addressing a joint meeting of the House and Senate to press his case for more aid to Ukraine. According to Reuters: "Over 2 million refugees have entered Poland from Ukraine since the start of the Russian invasion on Feb. 24, the Polish border guard said on Friday." Estimates from Europe suggest that the numbers will rise to more than 5 million Ukrainians fleeing their homes in the coming weeks. The program features America's state legislatures and governors around the nation who are condemning Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Through a principled endeavor, both the Mississippi House of Representatives and Senate passed resolutions barring any business between state entities and Russia. Governor Bryant served two terms as Mississippi's 64th governor from 2012 to January 2020 and served as Mississippi's lieutenant governor, as state auditor, and as a legislator in the Mississippi House of Representatives. Phil Bryant is a founding member of Bryant Songy Snell Global Partners where he provides strategic advice and counsel and business development services to some of the world's largest industry leaders. He is a distinguished guest-host of America's Roundtable and serves on the International Leaders Summit's leadership board. While serving as Mississippi's chief executive officer, Governor Bryant largely centered his efforts on creating new economic opportunities, among other things. Under Governor Bryant's leadership Mississippi saw its lowest-ever unemployment rate, its lowest-ever high school dropout rate, its lowest-ever teen pregnancy rate, its highest-ever number of jobs, its highest-ever number of graduating physicians, its highest-ever K-12 reading and math improvement scores, and its highest-ever high school graduation rate. Governor Bryant's dedicated focus on economic development yielded more than $8 billion in private sector investment in Mississippi as well as the largest economic project in state history—a landmark agreement with Continental Tire to build a major manufacturing facility in central Mississippi and create more than 2,500 new jobs. Governor Bryant dovetailed public education reforms with a strong focus on workforce training programs and job creation. His administration worked to improve career-technical training programs and their delivery through Mississippi's top-rated community and junior college system, pairing program offerings with local workforce opportunities and collaborating with the K-12 system to strengthen high school vocational programs. He worked closely with the University of Mississippi Medical Center to build a new School of Medicine and to increase the number of graduating physicians each year; to position Mississippi as a national leader in telemedicine services and technology; and to create a state-of-the-art residential facility to care for medically fragile children. Governor Bryant served as chairman of the Education Commission of the States; chairman of the Southern States Energy Board; chairman of Jobs for America's Graduates; and chairman of the Royal Commonwealth Society of the United States. https://ileaderssummit.org/services/americas-roundtable-radio/ https://ileaderssummit.org/ | https://jerusalemleaderssummit.com/ America's Roundtable on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/americas-roundtable/id1518878472 Twitter: @supertalk @PhilBryantMS @ileaderssummit @NatashaSrdoc @JoelAnandUSA America's Roundtable is co-hosted by Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy, co-founders of International Leaders Summit and the Jerusalem Leaders Summit. Sir John Wilson lost his sight at the age of 12 in an accident in his school chemistry laboratory. He'll be talking to Sue Lawley about how, undaunted, he went on to win a scholarship to Oxford, and then, at the age of 30, mortgaged his home and set up the Royal Commonwealth Society for the Blind. Since then, he has travelled an average of 50,000 miles a year, helping to restore or save the sight of millions of people the world over.
