Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we return to our series on Alan Wake with a special interview with Sam Lake, Creative Director at Remedy Entertainment. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Podcast breakdown: 0:52 Interview 1:02:20 Break 1:02:50 Outro Issues covered: getting started with PCs and TTRPGs, starting out as a writer, starting with a positive audience, Greyhawk/Temple of Elemental Evil, coming out of the demoscene, teaming up with Apogee, finding ways to insert story into games, selling the IP due to its success, knowing they'd have the ability to make something new, second album syndrome, concepting tons of ideas to make the dream game, themes that stuck around, wanting a flawed main character whose not an action hero, writing a story about the creative process, inspirations, post-modern writing and games, how to work within the grab bag of design elements, the sauna crew, making hard decisions, a sense of relief, retaining the story and thematic elements, pulling out a victory, having a different feel because of all the extra built stuff, supporting conflict and action, keeping character motivations in sync with player expectations, early game management, adding transmedia elements and tools, using voiceover to guide the player, integrating more video, the talk show, blending those elements well to expand the game world and character, extending the value of the Easter egg, making the connection between the games a surprise, the Remedy-Connected Universe, dreaming up characters with the actor in mind, the musical number, leveraging Easter eggs, Tim's streaming commitments. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Death Rally, Max Payne, Control, Commodore 64, Petri Järvilehto, Dungeons & Dragons, Apogee/3DRealms, Duke Nuke'em, George Broussard, Scott Miller, Dark Justice, Rockstar, Janos Flosser, Hitman, IO Interactive, Stephen King, On Writing, David Lynch, Twin Peaks, Paul Auster, Bret Easton Ellis, LOST, Hideo Kojima, Quantum Break, Matthew Porretta, Courtney Hope, Illka Villi, James McCaffrey, Old Gods of Asgard/Poets of the Fall, Tim Schafer, Ken Levine, BioShock, FireWatch, Gone Home, Sam & Max, David Wolinsky, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Next time: ??? Notes: I did not edit out GameThing's Season 8 theme, since they have apparently already let people know that was what is coming next. It was an indie comic that became a seminal 90s point & click adventure game. Its the little franchise that could and still endures to this day. In the late 1980s, Steve Purcell created Sam & Max - a zany, madcap comic about a buddy cop duo of a talking dog and a weird bunny rabbit creature named Sam & Max. Then he got a job as an animator at the famed Lucasfilm Games studio. Eventually, he was approached to make a game based on the characters. For the next few decades, this franchise persevered solely based on Purcell's unstoppable insistence on cheerleading for these two delightful characters. And, somehow, we've gotten dozens of pieces of media about these beloved talking animals. Wirklich knackige Rätsel findet man keine.

Of course, being a console launch means there are also all these games to talk about along with it. Jens, Randy, and Marc all have the console and they describe the things they love most about the console. From the magical Dualsense controller to the updated graphics for older titles and beyond. Sean and Jens also found out that their Xbox Series X consoles are arriving by Tuesday too. So, we may have another show soon to discuss that console as well. The guys also talk about the set up for the console, transferring saves from PS4 to PS5, and how buying cross-gen games can mean that you wind up playing the PS4 version on your PS5. Speaking of games, there are a lot of them to go through. Astro’s Playroom gets a lot of love from everyone and why it deserves to be in the top games of 2020 discussion. Spider-Man: Miles Morales plays extremely well and looks great. While Marc also spent time with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Jens is in love with the Demon’s Souls remake. Plus, Randy is struck by the oddity and absurdity of Bugsnax. Sean and Jens also delve into quite a bit of Yakuza: Like A Dragon and Fuser. While Sean rounds things out with his feelings on The Falconeer and Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory. There’s also news to talk about. The NPD numbers are out for October 2020 and the Nintendo Switch is still selling like crazy. Plus, a game from last year and Animal Crossing still lead in game sales too. Sean gets into why Microsoft may focus more on revealing ecosystem numbers and not console sales. While everyone tackles Yukes making AEW games. Not to mention, Yakuza: Like A Dragon not being sold on Xbox Series X in Japan sparks a debate on Microsoft potentially partnering with Japanese studios in the future. The Mass Effect and Nioh collections for the new consoles, and a few other things. This is a jam packed show that ran fairly long because everyone was excited to talk about the PS5 and all these new games. In this episode Sam, Max and Lowlands Cycling talk about Zwift and their journey into this amazing platform. Sam and Max are two cyclists that started as outdoor cyclists but evolved into, almost, dedicated online cyclists using Zwift. Their numbers are staggering. Max already has 4,000 miles and Sam over 3,700 miles in 2020. Zwift accounts for more than 90% of these miles. We talk at length about the Zwift cycling community how easily it is to get started with Zwift. “Zwift is an online exercise program for cyclists and runners at the moment. It is something that you put onto your computer, your laptop, your iPad and you hook up your indoor trainer to it. Slap your bike onto your trainer and you can ride in a virtual world with real friends from around the world; you have your personal avatars in there as well. It is a fantastic platform because you can do all sorts of things. You can do workouts, group rides with friends, or you can just go in and ride by yourself. Zwift being indoor cycling, it is very safe because you do not have to battle all sort of traffic on the bike, which is wonderful. So, yeah, it's a fantastic tool to get your exercise done in a safe, convenient way.”“Well, I think for one. For one, this is a great way to eliminate excuses for not actually getting out and exercising, if it is raining out or if it's too dark or too much traffic, or you're scheduled busy. There is always time that you can find on Zwift. All you have to do is just go down to the workout area and you are good to go. So you really don't need to have the perfect conditions you can ride when the weather's terrible and your day schedule is busy, and truly driving to start and cycling resulting in eliminating a lot of excuses for not getting yourself active!”

A temporary new era for Sketch Watch Play begins, as John recruits a revolving team of co-hosts to fill in for Chris through the rest of the year. First up to bat is returning guest Felipe Diaz-Vera from Generation Animation, with additional guests and topics announced at the episode's conclusion. We talk working at a movie theater with a certain film releasing, Felipe explains how Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite both delights him on a gameplay level and disappoints him almost everywhere else, while John loses his mind and his mind alone over Danganronpa V3's early twists. And no, the audio did not glitch out around 45 minutes - we don't want stuff spoiled for those interested in the game. If you have played past the first trial or don't mind having a huge spoiler dropped, you can hear the snipped audio here: http://behonkiss.tumblr.com/post/166370386542/my-unedited-thoughts-on-the-big-twist-in-the-first For this episode's main topic, we get niche, quirky, and hyperactive like a rabbit-y thing, as we discuss every iteration of Steve Purcell's Sam & Max series across print, animation, and video games. Highlights include John's inability to describe how the titular duo talks and emotes, how their road trips made Felipe want to visit Stuckey's, and impromptu discussions on underrated Dreamworks movies. 17:23 - Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite 33:20 - Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony initial impressions 50:08 - Sam & Max retrospective Show Twitter (Send feedback, questions, and requests!): https://twitter.com/sketchwatchplay Show Facebook (Send feedback, questions, and requests!): https://www.facebook.com/sketchwatchplay Show homepage: http://sketchwatchplay.blogspot.com/ John's Twitter: https://twitter.com/Behonkiss Felipe's Twitter: https://twitter.com/fizzucker Chris's Twitter: https://twitter.com/ChristopTheWade Listen to Felipe's podcast, Generation Animation: http://fanoffmedia.com/shows/gen/ Watch John's video review of the indie rhythm RPG The Metronomicon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kL_rksg_VU

This game, as you might have guessed, is based on Robert Kirkman's original comic books by the same name. In addition to her role as Clementine, Mellisa has also voiced characters from other popular video games like Sam & Max, League of Legends and more. Don't forget to stick around for the after show!

Hey Blockers! Time for episode 8, where I talk all about the long-lived Command and Conquer series. But, first things first, a bit of news: GoG.com has begun selling Telltale games titles. Telltale has done some great work in continuing on some great older adventure franchises like Monkey Island and Sam & Max. Also, I was able to get my new Roland MT-32 and give you my thoughts on it thus far. Then on to the main topic, Westwood Studios' 1995 game: Command and Conquer. I run down the usual suspects (genre, gameplay, plot, dev story) and also talk about a few followup games in the series. Download the Command and Conquer for free (legally, I promise!) Buy Command and Conquer: The First Decade on EA Origin or Amazon. Stay tuned for the next show where we travel back to World War I in Red Baron.

Last week, two bombshells came out of Ziff-Davis. First, the closing of the Games For Windows magazine--leaving EGM as the company's sole gaming magazine; and Dan Hsu's departure as Editorial Director. Not a good week for print, surely. We discuss that plus talk Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Ikaruga, Rock Band, Sam & Max, Mr. Driller Online, Donkey Kong Country 2 and Army of Two.Next week we will be discussing Legend of the Mystical Ninja for the Super Nintendo. In this episode ex-video game journo Chris and freelancer extraordinaire Greg: - Blatantly thieve the "what'cha been playin'" segment popular in many podcasts and use it to talk about Final Fantasy XII, Sam & Max, Phantasy Star Universe, Elite Beat Agents, DDR and Strawberry Shortcake(!).- Talk about preorders. Gears of War, the various Halo 3 editions, and Gamestop's ability to sell you slips of paper that say you have a game on reserve a year before it's due out. - Talk about microtransactions (again). EA being a repeat offender with Need For Speed Carbon. We also take some time to talk about the pricing of Nintendo/Sega/TG-16 virtual console stuff. Somewhere in there we also stray into talking about the failures of Xbox Live Arcade. - ...and in the last segment we reminisce a little bit with stories of system launches / launch windows past from the perspective of working at a video game magazine.Enjoy!
