Dan and Ellen talk with Rahul Bhargava, a colleague at Northeastern University. Rahul is a professor who crosses boundaries: the boundaries of storytelling and data, the boundaries of deep dives into collaborative research and interactive museum exhibits and plays. He holds a master's degree in media arts and science from MIT, and a bachelor's degree in electrical and computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. But he also minored in multimedia production. He brings the power of big data research to the masses, through newsroom workshops, interactive museum exhibits, and more. Rahul has collaborated with groups in Brazil, in Minnesota and at the World Food Program. He helps local communities use data to understand their world, and as a tool for change. There's more to data than just bar charts. Sometimes it involves forks! His book, "Community Data," unlocks all sorts of secrets. Dan and Ellen also talk with Lisa Thalhamer, a longtime TV journalist who is now a graduate student at Northeastern. Lisa realized that like many fields, journalism suffers from a gap between academic research and its implementation in workplaces. She is finding ways to bridge that gap, and urges an Avenger's-style team to lift up the work of a free press. Ellen has a Quick Take on a recent visit to Santa Barbara, California, and the efforts to revive a legacy paper, the Santa Barbara News-Press. Dan's Quick Take is about the latest development from the National Trust for Local News. It involves a chain of weekly papers in Colorado — their very first acquisition dating back to 2021. And it's not good news at all for the journalists who work at those papers and the communities they serve.

Ellen and Dan talk with Nicci Kadilak, an educator, author, mom, and founder of the Burlington Buzz. The Buzz is a hyperlocal online news site serving Burlington, Massachusetts, a town of 26,000 people north and west of Boston. Kadilak created the Buzz in early 2022, when a town election was on the horizon and the local Gannett weekly, the Burlington Union, switched to regional coverage. In the 1980s, Burlington was covered by two weekly papers and The Daily Times Chronicle of Woburn, where Dan worked for quite a few years.   Nicci uses the Substack platform, and charges a range of subscription fees. She offers news stories about town government, cultural events, sports, and has a section that provides a platform for audio interviews of newsmakers. She allows reader comments, too. Nicci also writes essays at Nicci's Notes, and her debut novel, "When We Were Mothers," is available wherever you buy books online. (Nicci and Ellen met in a Zoom discussion of local news led by Simon Owens for his informative Media Newsletter.) Dan reports on another effort to leverage tax credits for local journalism, and Ellen has a Quick Take on the decline and apparent death of The Santa Barbara News-Press.

Joe chats with award winning author, chef and travel guide Pamela Sheldon Johns about her journey through kitchens and vineyards from Southern California to Tuscany. She shares what she learned from adventures working alongside Wolfgang Puck, cooking Italian Food for Julia Childs and being cooked for in the Italian countryside soaking in it's rich history. We go on to explore what Italian Grandmothers, and artisanal food producers can teach us about our own relationships to food and very real conversations about the impact that both Climate Change and a Global Pandemic are having on the foods we have come to love. Ultimately, they talk about how food can become a celebration of life itself, the things we can all do to become more mindful travelers and why things just taste better when you are on Italian Soil. So, who is Pamela? Pamela's background includes a Master's Degree in Education/Administration from the University of San Francisco and a 30-year career that has included teaching, food styling, catering, cooking school administration, and food writing. After ten years working with disabled high school students (teaching them to cook and work in food service jobs), she moved into the world of fine cuisine, first with Chef Joachim Splichal and later managing Ma Cuisine, the Cooking School of Ma Maison in Los Angeles. In 1992, she started her own cooking school at Jordano's Marketplace in Santa Barbara, bringing in local and international food authorities or classes and events. At the same time, also began working as the representative of an Italian culinary program (at Tenuta di Capezzana, and later Cantina Avignonesi), traveling to Italy two or three times a year, for two to three months at a time. While in California, she was nominated to be a lifetime member of Slow Food and started the first convivium in Santa Barbara. She was the leader of the American Institute of Wine & Food at the local level and on the international board for several years. She was the Food Editor of Santa Barbara Magazine and a columnist for the Santa Barbara News-Press, and had a program on KEYT (ABC affiliate) and a radio show on KCBX (NPR affiliate). In 1996 Pamela created Italian Food Artisans, her culinary travel business. Pamela holds wine and food workshops in several regions of Italy: Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Campania, Liguria, Sicily, Puglia and Basilicata, Abruzzo, Veneto, Sardegna, Marche, and Piemonte. A dual citizen in the US and Italy, Pamela lives full-time with her familly at her organic farm, Poggio Etrusco, in southern Tuscany. The holiday apartments/bed & breakfast, cooking school, and tours have been touted in Bon Appetit, Travel and Leisure, Cooking Light, on CNN, Wall Street Journal, and more (some links below). Pamela is a certified Olive Oil Sommelier and is currently working on her AIS (wine sommelier) certification. Composer Happy Hour - Episode 2: Joshua Shank You came back for Episode 2! Welcome back and thanks for listening. If you missed episode one, don't worry - they aren't sequential - but you should definitely go back and check it out when you are done here. It was a good one. If you are a first time listener: this show features conversations with composers, and yes, it is about their music - but mostly it is an opportunity to get to know them as people. We will be sharing a drink and just talking about things that interest us. I hope that this feels a little bit less like an interview, and more like a casual conversation at a bar during happy hour. Consider this an invitation to pour yourself a drink, sit down, relax, and join us. Episode 2 features a conversation with Joshua Shank. I've always admired Josh's work, so I was very excited to have an extended conversation with him. Josh is a great guy, and somehow I always suspected we might have a lot in common. In this episode we discuss our mutual admiration for Ben Folds, growing up in the Midwest, and the "darker" side of choral music. As always, if you like what you hear - you can buy us a beer! Visit us at www.buymeacoffee.com/whateverchoir and click "Support." Your contribution goes to supporting future projects by whateverandeveramen. The music of Boston-based composer, Joshua Shank (b. 1980), has been called “jubilant…ethereal” (Santa Barbara News-Press), “evocative and atmospheric” (Gramophone), and “emotionally charged” (Boston Classical Review). He has been commissioned by organizations such as the Lorelei Ensemble, the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, the Choral Project, the American Choral Directors Association, and the Association for Music in International Schools. From 2004 to 2014, he served alongside fellow Composers-In-Residence Jocelyn Hagen and Abbie Betinis for the Minneapolis-based professional choir, The Singers, where he collaborated annually to expand and invigorate the repertoire for professional-caliber ensembles through innovative programming as well as new works written specifically for the ensemble. In 2002, he became the youngest recipient ever of the Raymond W. Brock Composition Award from the American Choral Directors Association. The winning piece, Musica animam tangens, was premiered in Avery Fisher Hall at the Lincoln Center, and has since been performed and recorded from Los Angeles to South Africa. A native of Minnesota, his music was recently featured in a documentary about the extensive choral tradition in the upper Midwest, Never Stop Singing, and his published works have sold over 150,000 copies worldwide. Joshua received his undergraduate degree in Music Education from Luther College where he studied conducting with Weston Noble. He has also earned master's and doctoral degrees in Musicology and Composition, respectively, from the University of Texas at Austin where he studied with Charles Carson, Yevgeniy Sharlat, Donald Grantham, and the late opera composer Daniel Catán. A fierce advocate for students' access to music education, he was a public-school teacher in Minneapolis/St. Paul for many years before going on to teach at Gonzaga University, Valley City State University, and Eastern Washington University. When he's not writing music, you can probably find him biking, studying vegetarian cooking, or watching hilariously bad movies with his husband, sociologist Robert Ressler. When my friend Abigail mentioned that her father-in-law, real estate broker William Etling, wrote a book about the Valley, I quickly downloaded a copy for my own research. Published in 2005, Sideways in Neverland is a collection from over 300 bi-weekly columns Etling wrote for the Santa Barbara News Press.Loosely grouped by topic, his columns cover everything from the best surf spots, to the history of the Mission, to jaunts at Neverland Ranch, and his adventures serving as an extra for three days on the set of the movie Sideways. As I immersed myself in these brief vignettes, I discovered Mr. Etling’s deep love for the Valley, its people, and topography, which shines through in his beautifully written prose. He also has an irreverent fondness for some of the characters that make up our community and details their adventures and misadventures alike with flair. In our conversation, we discuss Mr. Etling’s childhood as a transplant from North Carolina, his experience writing columns for the Santa Barbara News Press, his adventures in Neverland and Sideways, his business as a real estate agent with Los Olivos Real Estate Co., and his love for the Santa Ynez Valley and its endless natural beauty.Mr. Etling’s book, Sideways in Neverland, may be downloaded or purchased here or here.Solvang Children’s Shop, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in business, is featured in Small Business Spotlight.
