In this first installment of the Rock is Lit Season 4 Reading Series, Garth Risk Hallberg introduces us to his latest novel, ‘The Second Coming', reading a powerful excerpt and shedding light on the book's evolution. He shares insights into how music, especially the music of Prince, is woven into the narrative and why it plays such a pivotal role. Set in the spring of 2011, ‘The Second Coming' follows thirteen-year-old Jolie Aspern, who narrowly escapes a subway accident after trying to retrieve her phone. Her estranged father, Ethan—an ex-convict and recovering addict living in California—learns of the incident and believes something deeper is at play. Convinced that only he can save her, Ethan returns to New York.  The novel explores the fraught journey of father and daughter, both separately and together, from Manhattan during the Great Recession to a beach on Maryland's Eastern Shore. As their paths intertwine, Jolie encounters a mysterious stranger, while Ethan is pulled back into the life of Jolie's mother—his first love. You must only flirt, to convert”. If you don't know Susan Rogers by name, you'll know her work. A female producer and sound engineer in an industry dominated by men, her drive and commitment landed her side by side with Prince as his star soared. She was his audio technician right before he started recording Purple Rain, and was his sound engineer through his commercial peak – capturing Parade, Around the World in a Day, The Black Album, and Sign o' the Times. Susan had a front row seat to the creative genius and intense work ethic of one of the greatest artists of our time.2024 marks the 40th anniversary of Purple Rain, so to celebrate, I'm bringing you a Take 5 for the ages. When we first spoke back in 2020 I was blown away. Not only does Susan have this incredible legacy with Prince, but after they parted she would go on to produce some of the biggest hits of the 90's. Then she became a Professor at one of the world's most prestigious music schools. Her feelings about the emotional connections we have to sound, and what it means to be a good listener, resonated deeply with me, and I know they will with you too.James Brown - 'Papa's Got a Brand New Bag'Prince - 'Let's Go Crazy'Geggy Tah - 'Whoever You Are'Barenaked Ladies - 'One Week'Wilson Pickett - 'In the Midnight Hour'This episode was originally broadcast in 2020.

Coming off the success of his 1999 album, Prince took everything to another level with 1984's Purple Rain. The album featured 5 singles that would get major airplay on different radio formats (pop, rock, r&b, dance) and MTV. The album would sell over 25 million copies worldwide but it was also the soundtrack to the movie of the same name which grossed over $70 million. Prince not only won Grammys for the album but also earned an oscar for the title track. Prince's unabashed sexuality oozed from every aspect of his performance in the movie and the videos and was reinforced by his band, The Revolution. From pop greats (I Would Die 4 U), rockin dance tracks (Let's Go Crazy), personal epics (Purple Rain) and emotional hits (When The Doves Cry), Prince saw his tunes go up the charts of different musical genres. But his overt sexuality, especially in songs like Darling Nikki, irked parents including Tipper Gore who included him among the Filthy 15 during her PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) hearings before Congress. However, the extraordinary talent of Prince as a songwriter, instrumentalist, singer and performer won out in the end and this is the album that sent him to heights from which he never came down. It may not be the hard/prog/classic/heavy rock we normally cover but Purple Rain was hugely important in the development of our generation's understanding of what music was and we're happy to celebrate it's 40th! As a longtime fan, Brent shares his background with Prince, while Andy shares his unique impressions as a newer listener. HAPPY BIRTHDAY PRINCE!! We are rereleasing our Prince eps to celebrate Prince's birthday, the completion of the Prince mural in Minneapolis, and the unveiling of the commemorative street name Prince Rogers Nelson Way!  We are re-releasing an actually good episode, PRINCE! (Aaron lives in his garage in this one!)   Minnesotans love three things, Minnesota, things with pictures of Minnesota on them, and people from Minnesota! Therefore we LOVE Prince!   And so should you! It's also is AARON'S MOM'S Birthday so happy birthday to aaronsmom@gmail.com       Listen... we talk about a lot of stuff in this episode. It might be our best ever. But none of that matters. Aaron is currently living in his garage and needs to crawl out a window to go to the bathroom. It is all I can think about.  Matt hates Halloween and the BIG BOPPER makes a comeback. But that is all background noise compared to Aaron being locked into his garage at night by his wife.    We talk about how Prince is loved by Minnesotans and how he is the epitome of sex. But what we really want to hear is how Aaron has to sleep on an air mattress at night.  Finally, we debate how many guitar solos is too many, we have a list of the greatest movie songs of all time, but no one cares because we are all visualizing Aaron trying to sleep as rats run around the garage.    Contact us at beckdiditbetter@gmail.com and follow us on @beckdiditbetter on Instagram and Twitter.

Playlist del programa:00 - Blaudzun-Solar (Intro).01 - The Weather Girls-It's Raining Men.02 - Guns N' Roses-November Rain.03 - Adele-Set Fire To The Rain.04 - Billie Myers-Kiss The Rain.05 - The Script-Rain.06 - Madonna-Rain.07 - Prince-Purple Rain.08 - John Fogerty- Have You Ever Seen The Rain(Ft. Prince was already an enigmatic superstar before the movie (and soundtrack) for "Purple Rain" was released in 1984. But this outing catapulted him into superstardom -- where he orbited the likes of Michael and Madonna (and often surpassed them). "Purple Rain" is Prince at his creative, clever and naughty best. Standard classics like "Let's Go Crazy" and "When Doves Cry" are teased with gems like "Darling Nikki" and "I Would Die 4 U." And the anthemic title track is the type of masterpiece by which other songs are measured. The album "Purple Rain" is a bonafide classic. And Prince was just getting started.

On this next episode of The Broken Record Player Podcast, my buddy Tim Guill and I pay homage to the Purple One, Prince, as we dive deep into the masterpiece that is Purple Rain. Coming off the success of 1999, Prince was looking to push the envelope further. Already a star, Prince would cement his legacy with Purple Rain. It was not just an album, rather it was a testament to the genius that was Prince. Filled with classics such as the title track itself, “When Doves Cry,” “Let's Go Crazy,” “I Would Die 4 U,” and more, Purple Rain is as close to perfection in an album as it gets. It was a more grand sound for Prince, and it brought him to superstar status on the same level as his peer (and occasional rival), Michael Jackson. What makes this album so unique, besides the epic and grand production and quality, is that Prince is working with a band: The Revolution. Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman, Dr. Fink, Brown Mark, and Bobby Z, worked tirelessly with their mad scientist leader to craft an album that featured funky bass lines, shredding guitar solos, electronic effects, pounding drum beats, beautiful ballads, and the shrieks, screams, wails, and heartfelt vocals of Prince. As if a groundbreaking album wasn't enough, to showcase how ambitious Prince was in 1983, a movie of the same name was made. Tim and I discuss both as we take a look at one of the most celebrated albums, and artists, of all time.

This was Purple Rain, which starred Prince and he created this album as the soundtrack. Not many of you knew this was even a movie, but I guarantee there are not many who don't know the music from Prince's masterpiece album.
