Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will

382 Images of Ourselves    It's a sad fact of life that we internalize narratives that are made for us at an early age, we are told we are too emotional, that we're too bossy, that we're too big, and if we do not actively try to reframe or unlearn these narratives made for us, we are forced to live out a story someone else made up for us. It is our duty to reach out and take the power back for ourselves, to wield the pen as a mighty sword, and write our own narrative for the sake of our growth and inner peace.  In today's episode Sarah Elkins and Lindsey A. Lee, discuss the importance of becoming the person you want to be, showing up for yourself and those you love, and how vital it is for our growth as human beings to sit with the narratives we have about ourselves and decide for ourselves if these narratives are our own genuine thoughts and beliefs or if they were a planted idea.   Highlights Is the person you became, the person you wanted to be or the person you needed to be to survive? How do you show up for the people who need you? What stories and perceptions from others are you still holding onto?   Quotes “My greatest performance was pretending to be okay.” “There was emotion in my home, it just didn't look like mine. It looked like yelling, fighting, and shutdowns.”   Dear Listeners it is now your turn, The thing that I want to ask you, you remember every time at the end of these conversations I'm asking you to consider something for yourselves. My dear friend Netty Owens asked me one time: What is the object in your image of yourself that you would like to hold on to? And I talked about the Hanukkiah, the Jewish candelabra that we use for Hanukkah. And there's one candle that's separated from the rest, so there are 9 holders, 8 for the 8 nights of Hanukkah, and the one is the leader candle or the Shamash. That candle is the one we light first, we say the first prayer and then we light all the other candles with that candle. And I like to think of myself as a Shamash, someone who knows that by lighting other candles I am in no way diminishing my own light and that when we light other candles we bring more light. And for that brief moment when we connect like Lindsey and I did, for two and a half minutes our flames were together which made that an entwined hyper bright flame, even for that one moment, and it changes the energy and dynamic in a room. Guaranteed. So I am asking you listeners, what is your image of yourself? Just like Lindsey wants to be radiant and exudes that radiance when she owns that language, what will be yours? And, as always, thank you for listening.    Mentioned in This Episode The Four Agreements   About Lindsay Lindsay is a wellness mentor, educator, and founder of Honeydew U—a lifestyle platform helping women embrace authenticity, align with purpose, and heal through spiritual growth. She's also the host of Honey, Do You!, a soulful podcast exploring wellness, spirituality, and womanhood. With a background in education, business, and holistic wellness, Lindsay empowers women to break free from expectations and live with intention. As well as her podcast Honey, Do You!   About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. Be sure to check out the Storytelling For Professionals Course as well to make sure you nail that next interview!

What an amazing thing that both of them will be able to see them perform live and witness a legend in action! Rolling Stones are a big inspiration to Sonia C. because they just keep going, and will keep going until the very end; just the way she hopes to be.    This week's theme is: Do you have too many gloomy friends? Might be time for a cleanse.     Highlights: Is it time to do a friend cleanse? [2:20] What is a glommer? [3:15] Sensitive People have a lot of compassion. IT can be hard to spot a glommer! [6:45] Remember, you and your friend are both being generous in exchanging your energy. It needs to be equal parts giving! [8:00] When should you call out an energy vampire? [9:55] It's okay to not be onboard with someone else's energy. [16:10] Sonia C. remembers a time where she just wanted a friend, and overgiving as a result. [20:45]  Sonia C. remembers a trick her mother used to do. The Anti-Glom methold. [22:35] Tool of the week. [24:45] Question of the week. [29:35]   We need to be very careful with who we are hanging around with in our actual lives and who we are hanging out with in our heads. If you want to be around good vibes, you'll have to clean out the external and internal closet so that it matches your vibration. This can be tough to do! Is it time to let go of an old friendship that you know is no longer serving you? Let's talk about it!    Sonia C. has a friend that is back on the dating market and it's been eye opening listening to some of her dating horror stories and revelations. One of them being that there are just certain people who walk around in life with a big raincloud on their head. Don't be surprised if you also get wet just by being in their orbit. It's an icky vibration and it's honestly not worth having them drag you down in the off-chance that you can bring them up.    Tool of the Week: Great people with ‘Tell me something good!' to combat their gloominess.    Continue on Your Journey:   Question of the Week: My soul longs to be free-spirited, but I have a mission calling to stay put and work with troubled/underprivileged people. London is experiencing the ‘summer that never happened', which is really throwing Sonia C.'s mood off. To contrast this, Sonia T. is sweating bullets down in New Orleans as they experience one of the hottest summers on record. Although the ladies are both in different parts of the world, they are experiencing some yucky weather and Sonia C. knows that it's just making everyone feel off!   This week's theme is about: Windy changes and embracing the unstable winds.   Highlights: Is it in the air? Both Sonia C. and T. are feeling really off. [1:15] You have to feed and move your spirit, even if you feel so flat and down. [3:15] Sonia C. is going through a lot of changes. There is a bright light at the end of the tunnel, but it needs to get a bit dark and messy first before she can get there. [6:50] Stuff holds energy. If you're feeling messy, then it's time for a deep clean. [8:25] Intuition follows organization. [9:10] When you follow your intuition, even if it doesn't make sense, there will always be an open door for you to go through. [16:35] There is no right way to live your life. Only your intuition knows what's right for you. [24:25] Sonia T. shares a story of a 78-year-old man she met at a burning man. [32:45] Tool of the week. [34:30] Question of the week. [37:05]   Sonia T. wanted to just lie in bed all day but decided to make the most out of it and go see a show with one of her friends. However, this yucky weather really does feel like it's spreading everywhere because both she and her friend were just flat as pancakes energetically. After the event, their energy levels did pick up, which is an indicator that sometimes you just gotta waddle through the mud before you get to the energetic gold.   Sonia C. was on vacation, but it was not the relaxing one she was expecting. Her exotic location was going through intense winds and it just made it very difficult to unplug, unwind, and relax! This restless energy really got her spirit in high drive and stressed out. Sonia C. is going through a lot of ungrounded energy and changes, but she knows intuitively that these changes are happening for the better.   Tool of the Week: Say YES to new adventures and new things that make you uncomfortable.   Question of the Week: My intuition wants me to take a leap of faith. How can you use AI to get wine and food pairing advice? Will using AI make wine styles and flavours less diverse? Will AI replace wine writers? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Dina Blikshteyn, a lawyer who specializes in how artificial intelligence and machine learning is changing the wine world. Note: Our discussion is not intended to be a substitute for professional legal advice and is for informational purposes only. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks   Highlights Is there a risk that using AI tools will make wine taste more uniform? How can AI-enabled machines help to vineyards to go organic? What's involved in making AI models more accurate in wine analysis? How can AI be utilized to identify anomalies and potential fraud in the wine industry? Can AI make appropriate wine and food pairing recommendations? What are the copyright implications of AI-generated content? Is there a role for AI in the world of wine critics? How can trade secrets be used to protect AI models, specifically around wine recommendations? How will AI be used in tasting rooms of the future?   Key Takeaways I was interested to learn about the ways AI can give wine and food pairing tips, but I am immensely relieved that AI won't be replacing me any time soon. Used the right way, AI won't make wine styles and flavours less diverse. Rather it should expand them if the tool is used to make wine better. I was fascinated with her description of how AI is being used to grow grapes and all aspects of the process. It'll be interesting to see if drones become a common sight over the vineyards… maybe they'll invent one to chase away annoying tourists - just the pesky ones, of course.   Join me on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube Live Join the live-stream video of this conversation on Wed at 7 pm ET on Instagram Live Video, Facebook Live Video or YouTube Live Video. Summary: We outgrow many things over the course of our lives, financial systems included. Is it time to move beyond capitalism? Marco Dondi, the author of Outgrowing Capitalism: Rethinking Money to Reshape Society and Pursue Purpose, comes on the show to propose how we can rethink capitalism to build a better future. His book sheds light on how the financial system and money operate; furthermore, Marco fosters understanding about how money can be allocated to ensure smooth transitions within the global economy. Proposing more of an equal balance between freedom and government intervention, Marco unveils some solutions for the problems and inequalities that stem from capitalism. Highlights: -Is it time to move beyond capitalism? What's the difference between capitalism and free markets? -Marco Dondi is the author of Outgrowing Capitalism: Rethinking Money to Reshape Society and Pursue Purpose -We are starting to outgrow capitalism—especially in developed economies -Capitalism has created many useful things, but it has also created many problems (i.e. inequality, environmental problems) -Lots of people today think that the government should intervene whenever they see fit -Capitalism entails a balance of freedom and government regulation -Marco proposes that some things can be designed to be much more free -Energy transitions have never been done by the government; they've taken place within markets -Hefty investments needed to bring new technology to a level of efficiency -There are times when the government needs to get involved, but sometimes they can do more harm than good (i.e. the energy crisis) -Is a carbon free world worth it considering the turbulent path required to get there? -The transition will not happen without new global regulations and countries that are willing to take the lead -We need to decide to what extent we can cause pain; some countries are in a better spot to make this transition -With climate change, there needs to be more strategic direction. -The constraint continues to be that money is limited. It's important to understand where the financial system is putting this money, and how it can be allocated in a better way Useful Links: Financial Survival Network Outgrowing Capitalism

Summary: There's two sides to the debate about whether inflation is here to stay, and I talk to Jordan Roy-Byrne to hear his opinion on this topic. He points out that the market action we've been seeing alludes to the fact that inflation has peaked; long term rates have been coming down, bonds have rallied, and the metals are trading below their previous highs. We have to look at each year relative to the previous, so next year we may experience disinflation—where we still see inflation, but at a decreasing rate. Tune in for more. Highlights: -Is inflation here to stay? There's two sides to this argument -Natgas has come down, uranium has come up…what else is ahead? -Long term rates have been coming down in recent months and bonds have rallied -If you look at gold and silver, they're trading well below their previous highs, and the same is true with the mining stocks -Oil has probably peaked for the time being -The market action screams that inflation has peaked -Next year we may see disinflation -Commodities have peaked as well -Gold and silver have been correcting for 17 months now and remain pretty weak -Every time the Fed has tapered in the last 7-8 years, real interest rates start to rise -The picture in the coming months is not bullish for precious metals -Inflation is here to stay, but it's going to come down to a lower level next year -They have to keep the whole system going—it would be catastrophic to let everything fail -Each year is a comparison off of the previous one -Oil and energy prices are big drivers -We have to consider how long the Fed rate-hike cycle will last and what it will look like -There is risk of a correction this coming year, but the market is not at risk of a crash just yet -Precious metals take off when interest rates are higher Useful Links: Financial Survival Network The Daily Gold The Precious Metals Bull Market Has Not Yet Begun with Jordan Roy-Byrne Real Gold Bull Market at Least 12-Months Away Says Jordan Roy-Byrne

Summary: The Fed seems to be losing control of the inflation narrative. No one believes it's just temporary as the list of everyday things like gas and coffee that are soring in price gets longer. And fewer people think the Fed has any way of fixing things.  The labor market is the tightest it's ever been, producing some scary/funny stories.  US housing is officially a bubble. Now it's not just prices but behaviors that have become dangerous.  This month's elections in VA and NJ imply big things for next year's Congressional midterms. Thanksgiving dinner cost is hitting a record. If nothing else brought home the cost of inflation, this dinner will. Highlights: -Is the Fed losing control? They have always controlled the narrative, but now, not so much -The narrative is everything in the currency world -The Fed has gotten away with the story that the higher prices are transitory and that normality will return -Financial markets are being affected—there are inflation hedges and gold and silver are starting to ramp up -It looks as if people don't believe the Fed anymore -Inflation started getting closer to double digits in the 70s -The Fed has made the decision to let the current inflation run for a while and do a tiny bit of tapering -Inflation is forever now -In a government bond, you would lose so much capital every year -Thanksgiving dinner is up to as much as $100 a turkey -This is a great time to be a debtor -The complexion of the precious metals market has changed entirely over the last three weeks -We've seen upside reversals Useful Links: Financial Survival Network Dollar Collapse Kill the Dollar or the Economy with John Rubino John Rubino on Strikes and Wade Inflation

What's it like to uproot your life in North America and move to Paris? What's the connection between forensic science and wine? What influence has hip-hop music had on wine culture? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Tanisha Townsend, Chief Wine Officer of lifestyle agency Girl Meets Glass. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks.   Highlights Is milk a good alternative to wine? How did a trip to Burgundy change Tanisha's life? What's one thing Tanisha would do differently in her early career if she could go back? How did Tanisha gain her confidence as a wine professional? What about Tanisha's background in computer forensics connected her to wine? What role are NFTs playing in the wine world? Why did Tanisha decide to uproot her life and move to Paris? What's it like teaching French people about wine as an American woman? How has hip-hop music influenced the world of wine? What culture shifts did Tanisha have to adjust to with life in Paris?   Key Takeaways I loved listening to Tanisha's story about uprooting her life in the US and moving to Paris. I think it's a dream many of us have. She had such confidence and boldness though to make the move. I'm fascinated with the connection between forensic science and wine, and particularly how the new non-fungible tokens will soon play a role in detecting wine fraud. We'll have to dive into that in more depth in a future episode. I thought Tanisha had great insights on the influence that hip-hop music has had on wine culture, particularly when it comes to celebrity wines.   Watch Party Join me for the debut Watch Party of the video of this conversation that I'll be live-streaming for the very first time on Zoom on Wednesday, July 21st at 7 pm eastern. You can save your spot for free right here. I'll be jumping into the comments as we watch it together so that I can answer your questions in real-time. I want to hear from you! What's your opinion of what we're discussing? What takeaways or tips do you love most from this chat? What questions do you have that we didn't answer?   About Tanisha Townsend Tanisha Townsend is Chief Wine Officer of lifestyle agency Girl Meets Glass. She leads wine classes and tours in Paris as well as online. She also hosts the podcast, Wine School Dropout. Her goal is to empower people with an advanced knowledge of wine and spirits to build confidence in their tastes and make choices when buying wine.   To learn more about the resources mentioned in this episode, visit https://www.nataliemaclean.com/137.

Although this might be hoped to be baseline for hosts covering a very niche topic, here it represents a nice window of opportunity to record during a spike in the general level of knowledge available. Another stroke of good fortune has the Hideaki Annography topic as a sequence from Miyazaki's Nausicaä, Michael's favorite film from the director. This plugcast can't help but succeed! In such favorable conditions, this might be best seen as a recovery from recent challenges. The full schedule of bits are covered while keeping the runtime intact. Both main project and the Hideaki Annography make ground. Questionable material as we approach ground zero for fan service starring 14 year olds: skirted! So to speak. Highlights: - Is it this or the previous episode where the cousins fervently insist that they are not weirdos for liking something in the show? Never mind, that's going to reach drinking game levels going forward. - Yep, the same guys in a podcast episode with a story where teen Steve gets his grandma to buy him a Xanth book, which she discovers is "rife with horse sex". - Michael is on the far fringe of normal human height. Steve is up there too for a hāfu. They both gush with projection over Kaji being portrayed as a tall hunk. - The straight scoop on Anno working for Miyazaki on Nausicaä, and Michael's pleasant fantasy that they are good friends. Could be true!

As the Book of Wisdom states,  "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom." Currently, he works with commercial real estate landlords and tenants and helps them arrange a fair leasing agreement. Because of COVID-19, Brady offers advice on what tenants and business owners can do with their commercial lease and how they can navigate paying less rent for the time being. Highlights: Is there COVID-19 legislation that can affect commercial tenancy in California? Take a look at your lease and see what it says if there is an interruption of business or a force majeure event. How can you talk to your landlord about not being able to cover rent? Can you legally ask for rent abatement or some kind of rent forgiveness during this time? It’s critical to make your requests reasonable and to work with your landlord. The Paycheck Protection Program can help you with rent costs. Check with your insurance broker on the types of insurance that are available to you. Now is the time to get creative with percentage rent or extending the lease term. Reserve your claims, even if you’re denied, because it may turn out you’ll be getting more coverage than you think later down the line for business interruption.   Resources: Suttonhague.com Calnevalaw.com Mcguinnessesq.com
