John Searles joins Book Gang to dish on his new novel Single Girls, inspired by Helen Gurley Brown and the women who transformed Cosmopolitan magazine. We welcome John Searles to Book Gang for a heartfelt conversation about his historical fiction novel, Single Girls—a story inspired by Helen Gurley Brown and the trailblazing women behind Cosmopolitan. Drawing on his years as an editor at Cosmo and his deep admiration for Helen, he brings readers behind the scenes of the magazine's revolutionary 1960s makeover. Together, we explore the mix of nostalgia, ambition, and feminist history that animates this witty, unconventional story of women's work and self-discovery. Single Girls follows Helen Gurley Brown as she assembles a team of unforgettable women to take on a skeptical publishing world, reshaping Cosmo and, in the process, the lives of millions of single women. Through playful structure, shifting points of view, and the signature Cosmo quizzes and glossaries, John immerses readers in the vibrant, sometimes chaotic world of magazine publishing and female empowerment. In this lively episode, we discuss:

Okay, real talk — you think you're not a creative person. You're wrong, and this episode is me proving it. Not another "get back out there and date" ep — this one's about getting out of your slump by making stuff instead of waiting to feel inspired. Creativity is why we're alive, and I want you to create your world. And creativity has nothing to do with art — it can, but there's so much more you're creating. Your days, your routines, your relationships, the way you spend a random Tuesday — all of it. By the end, you'll realize you have something worth creating.Stay connected here Connect with me on Instagram  Please email me here: Lauren@ohyeahcoaching.comApply for coaching HEREWould You Date You? Marlon and Jake dive into one of literature's trickiest subjects: sex. Why do some writers capture intimacy with honesty while others veer into the unintentionally hilarious? Along the way, they discuss why writing about sex is really writing about people, the differences between American and French attitudes toward sexuality in fiction, ghost stories as a vehicle for taboo desires, and the delicate balance between telling the truth and keeping readers engaged. When a real-life person inspires you to write a story, how do you balance truth with fiction? It's a difficult challenge, especially if you have a personal relationship with your subject. But it's not impossible. New York Times-bestselling author John Searles spent two decades as a top editor for Cosmopolitan magazine, first hired by Helen Gurley Brown—the editor-in-chief credited with revitalizing the dying title in the 1960s. In his time at the magazine, John would joke to Helen that he would one day write a book about her. Now he has with his new bestselling novel, Single Girls. In this episode, John discusses the challenges of writing about real people, navigating switching genre lanes, honoring real people with fiction they would've loved, and more.

John Searles joins Carol Fitzgerald to talk about his new novel, SINGLE GIRLS, a work of dramatic fiction set in the 1960s. It focuses on Helen Gurley Brown and the team of women she assembled who transformed Cosmopolitan into one of the best-selling magazines of all time. A Bookreporter Bets On selection, the book has been compared to "Mad Men" and "Sex and the City." John worked at Cosmopolitan and shares his encounters with Helen through the years. The novel is deeply informed by real events, Helen's memoirs, published biographies, and his personal knowledge of the editors who worked there. John had always wanted to write about Helen and had told her so during their friendship, but he had been constrained by publishing expectations to stay within his established genre: suspense/thrillers. The audiobook is narrated by his friend, Amy Ryan, who starred in the film adaptation of his earlier novel, STRANGE BUT TRUE. Carol worked at Mademoiselle, and during their conversation, she shares her background there and how she navigated her early career before leaving Condé Nast and starting The Book Report Network almost 30 years ago. goodgodbycherita@gmail.com A Single Girl's Rocky Path to Finding True Love (Author Cherita O'dell) Hello I wanted to introduce you to Cherita O'dell, an author and speaker whose work sits at the intersection of faith, modern dating, and the quiet burnout many women are carrying right now. Cherita is the author of “Good God!: A Single Girl's Rocky Path to Finding True Love.” It's a faith-based book, but not a glossy or preachy one. She writes for women who love God and still wrestle with timing, waiting, and the feeling that life didn't unfold the way they expected. One of her core messages is that dating isn't just a romantic decision, it's a spiritual one, and that idea tends to stop people mid-scroll. What makes Cherita especially compelling is her lived experience. She qualified for the 1996 Olympic Games and was sidelined by injury just before competing — an early lesson in identity, disappointment, and trusting purpose when plans fall apart. That perspective now shows up in how she speaks about relationships, resilience, and surrender in a way that feels grounded, honest, and relatable. Cherita is thoughtful on air, easy to talk with, and doesn't rely on platitudes. She speaks candidly about faith, desire, waiting, and wholeness without guilt or pressure to wrap things up neatly. Her work resonates with single women navigating today's dating culture, faith-based audiences craving more honest conversation, and producers looking for guests who bring both depth and warmth. If you're exploring guests around relationships, spirituality, women's empowerment, or personal growth, I'd be happy to see if Cherita might be a fit. About Cherita: Cherita O'dell is a transformational speaker and author of “Good God!: A Single Girl's Rocky Path to Finding True Love,” a faith-based book for women navigating waiting, dating, and purpose. A former Olympic athlete and licensed real estate broker, she blends spiritual wisdom, resilience, and real-life experience to help individuals and organizations rethink identity, timing, and trust. Through Speak Life, Cherita challenges audiences to stop asking God to bless their plans, and start making decisions God can bless. In this fascinating conversation, we discuss:

#171 In this powerful and honest conversation, Kim's dear friend Niki shares the story behind those words. Raised in a culture that promised women they could “have it all,” Niki pursued success, independence, and a career-first life—believing everything else would fall into place later. But life didn't unfold the way she expected. With vulnerability and wisdom, Niki reflects on what she wishes she had known, how her faith drifted in her early years, and the moment everything began to change. Her story is both a gentle warning and a beautiful reminder: it's never too late for God to redeem, restore, and lead us into something better. This episode is for every woman who wants to follow God—but feels the tension of all the voices telling her what her life should look like.Related Episodes:#53 Jena on Contentment#71 Why Waiting Was Worth It#118 Discipleship and the Single Girl#167 Your Single Season is Doing More Than You Realize#170 When Singleness Feels Unsteady: The Anchor You NeedThe full video episode is available on Spotify--enjoy! MERRY CLAMBAKE! Featuring Justin Gausman, Olivia Murphy-Rogers, Rabia, Felix, John Michael Heath, David "Ghosty" Wills, Garrett Cash and Darin Evans.  Part 1 opens with the revelation of how we tricked Felix into thinking he would have to watch Clambake again, then primarily covers our overall thoughts on the Norman Taurog-directed 1966 flick about a singing racecar driver, "Spinout." Sharing numerous overlaps with 1967's "Clambake", such as co-stars Shelley Fabares and Will Hutchins, "Spin-bake" puts the differences between the two Elvis films in sharp relief - and the earlier movie brings out a whole new world of fascinating themes to explore, from the way "Spinout" handles gender norms & expectations, to its origins as a deeply meta Elvis spoof, plus major cultural references, including allusions to the contemporaneous book & film "Sex and the Single Girl" by Helen Gurley Brown via Diane McBain's character.  Unlike previous years' Christmas episodes, this discussion is much more free-flowing rather than having an overly structured beat-by-beat recap, so having seen "Spinout" is strongly recommended! Part 2 will emphasize the song sequences of "Spinout" more linearly, as well as touch on the film's soundtrack and bonus tracks (which Justin & Gurdip also reviewed in 2023) more strongly through its cinematic lens.

What up homies, I'm your host, Lisa Bilyeu and today I invited my girl, Faith Jenkins back for another episode to guide you on this journey of empowerment and it's dedicated to all of the single ladies that are fed up with B.S. dating advice and trying to keep everyone else happy. We're about to share a secret with you - it's the secret of embracing and living your best life, no matter what stage of single you're at (actually it's more like 6 secrets that are no longer secret, but they are life changing). No one talks about how exciting and meaningful the single life can be. Being single can be an exciting, fulfilling phase of your life that's so much more than a waiting room for marriage or failed relationships. In fact, it's a time of self-exploration, a time to unchain yourself from past hurts, and a time to understand what you truly want from love and life. This two-part episode is a pot of priceless lessons on mastering the art of being single and happy. We cover everything - from enjoying the single phase, becoming an intentional dater, to understanding the importance of marriage for you (in your own words, not your momma's words). We're not just talking about the good bits, but also the challenges - like family pressure, loneliness, and the fear of settling. That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.”   Ephesians 2:8–10 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God‘s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.“   Ephesians 2:13 “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.“   Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
