In this episode, we'll be sharing with you two audio tracks by Ōtautahi based artist Luke Shaw. These works were originally made as part of an installation work, Sleepwalker, which was shown at RM Gallery in Tāmaki Makaurau in late 2023. In this presentation the work is stripped back to audio only, by the Opawa 45s: Luke Shaw and bandmate Luke Wood. Sleepwalker draws from an archive of found slide images, and uses processes of rerecording, imagining a sleepwalker as a kind of spectral figure with the ability to move fluidly between memories and cinematic planes.
Conversation with Sacramento State President Luke Wood. Also, unpacking two new state laws about policing and a traffic speed camera pilot. Finally, Sacramento County needs volunteers for it's homelessness point-in-time count. Sac State President Luke Wood From the day Sacramento State President Luke Wood arrived on campus, he was tasked with overcoming big obstacles that could jeopardize the success of the university– from ongoing negotiations and labor strikes for faculty and staff, as well as steering the campus auxiliary CapRadio off a financial cliff. Less than six months in, President Wood's time has been filled with big tests– but not all are crises. President Wood joins us with the highlights and some big milestones to look forward to for the new year. New Laws: Police Stops and Traffic Cameras Continuing our breakdown of new legislation taking effect in 2024, CapRadio State Politics Reporter Nicole Nixon joins Insight to talk about two new laws related to policing and safety on California's roadways. Assembly Bill 2773 requires law enforcement officers to tell drivers why they were stopped or pulled over, while Assembly Bill 645 establishes a new traffic speed camera pilot program in six cities across the state. Nicole also highlights new workplace and labor legislation that took effect in the new year. Sacramento's 2024 Point-In-Time Count The last count of unsheltered homeless living in the Sacramento area showed an increase of 67% since the last report in 2019. Known as the “point-in-time count,” volunteers fan across the county over two days, providing a conservative snapshot of who is unhoused. Lisa Bates, Chief Executive Officer of Sacramento Steps Forward, joins us with information on the latest PIT, the need for volunteers for the upcoming count in late January, and how that can translate into federal homelessness response dollars.

In today's episode Race Reflections' Membership Engagement Coordinator Janedra Sykes talks about Whiteness and White Supremacy Culture as narcissism in (and outside) the workplace. She starts by reflecting on her personal experience in relations to this topic, how she came to consider racism through a public health lens and how her work on this takes Black women as her primary audience and aims to give them toolkits to use to navigate this terrain. She outlines Christina Sharpe's concept of anti-blackness as the climate in which we all live. Then she looks at the ways in which using narcissism as a lens for dealing with whiteness in the workplace has been helpful for her within this work. She then explores some case studies, looking at how Black organisations and individuals are treated by White organisations. Then she runs through some people and places to find tools from. From Doctor Ramani she takes documenting your work, understanding a narcissist won't give you anything back, forming healthy relationships inside and outside of your organisation (if you can) and recognising patterns of narcissism. From Dr Nathalie Martinek she takes ways to help hack narcissism in the workplace and the ways in which these dynamics are racialised. And then she expands on all this with her own thoughts and experiences. She ends by outlining how White Supremacy as narcissism is not a new concept it having been already touched on by Dr Karl Bell in the 1970's and even by W.E.B. Du Bois, and she ends with summing up how exploring racism in the workplace through the lens of narcissism can help by de-personalising it, distancing it as well as that the act of naming something both takes some of it's power away and gives you some power back.Christina Sharpe: The Weather https://thenewinquiry.com/the-weather/Doctor Ramani's YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/c/DoctorRamaniNathalie Martinek: Hacking Narcissism https://nathaliemartinekphd.substack.com/Janedra Sykes: http://arboretagroup.com/staff/janedra-sykes/Narcissistic Racism: Revisiting Carl Bell by J. Alison Mitchell, Jim Maxwell and Charu Sharma discuss the volume of short format cricket. While the Indian Premier League continues to flourish, there is speculation that the ECB could be about to axe The Hundred in the UK in favour of a more sustainable T20 competition. Cricket Australia have increased its salary cap in the Big Bash League to lure the top talent to the league, due to a number of overseas players quitting the league mid-season for the T20 tournaments in the UAE and South Africa. So how many competitions is too many? We hear from Australia and Sussex player Steve Smith on playing in the County Championship and whether he will change his style of batting in the Ashes. Plus we are joined by the first female member of ground staff to work at an international venue in England. Meg Lay works for Gloucestershire Cricket Club and tells us about the importance of getting more women involved in the game. Dan Weston joined the podcast to talk all things T20. Starting off with England, who returned to Pakistan for the first time in 17 years this week. They are 1-0 up in their 7 match T20 series and already there are some talking points. Why are Pakistan so one dimensional? Which England batter is a potential AB de Villiers? And is Luke Wood the next England T20 star? In part two they turn their attention to India v Australia. In a high scoring match Australia ran out winners as the India death bowlers collapsed and allowed Wade to sneak off with the win. Bhuvi is becoming a particular problem for India in this role, but is there anything they can do about it? Finally they chat about the SA20. Dan gives his thoughts on the teams and the top buys in the auction, and Jack chimes in about Temba Bavuma's rejection. The adventure continues! I'm so excited for you to hear the incredible conversation I had with my guitarist and friend, Luke Wood. The quote for this episode is by Matisyahu: “When I listen to music, there's usually some aspect of that music that I like, and that's what I take and try to bring into my own music. Bringing in other musicians to collaborate with is a good way for me to test out new ways or make music that I might have not discovered on my own.” Listen as Luke and I talk about collaborating in the studio. We dive into the whole experience and share lots of insights, stories, and laughs along the way. Are you enjoying Write on Track? Do you have a topic suggestion for an episode? With a captivating sound that is a mix of Rock, Hip Hop, Blues, and Country, Luke Wood is an incredibly fascinating artist. An Alabama native, his music is heavily influenced by the sound of late 90’s Rock. His songwriting and lyricism is motivated by real life experiences, emotion, and storytelling, allowing audiences to easily connect with his music as it can resonate with many walks of life.Wood returned to songwriting in 2016 after a brief hiatus. Now experiencing music and writing as a form of therapy and self-reflection, a love for the art he long thought gone, was rekindled. Since then, he has used that fire in his approach to his career, going on to perform live at music venues around the southeastern United States. In the whirlwind of 2020, Luke began collaborating with producer Josh Barron of Barron Records in Alabama. They have been working together since, and have released songs such as ‘Devil’s Hand’ and most recently ‘Preacher Man’. With much more music set to be released in the upcoming months, Luke Wood is an artist to watch. https://songwhip.com/lukewood
Did you know $20 billion of food is wasted in Australia every year? Globally, that figure is closer to $1 trillion. But how can we improve supply-chain management if we don't know what, or where the problems are?Australian agritech startup, Escavox has a solution. It's a little blue box tracker, described as CCTV for food, that's placed in a fresh food carton at the point of packing and travels through the supply chain capturing data on dwell time, temperature and location. It uses real-time monitoring that's helping to cut food waste, protect premiums and improve market access for Australian farmers.Escavox's focus to date has been on Australia, starting with horticulture in 2019, moving into the meat sector in 2020 and early seafood trials starting in 2021. Now they've set their sights on expansion into international export markets like southern Africa and South America. We caught up with Luke Wood, CEO, and Co-Founder of Escavox, to learn more about this technology, the wide-reaching benefits for our agricultural sectors and what the next phase of growth looks like. In this episode we cover both "macro" and "micro" points of discussion about race and racism. Harriet starts off with explaining how capitalism has always required a set of social divisions to pit workers against each other to prevent them from uniting against common oppressors. Max shares the example of how the Bacon's Rebellion of 1676 - white and black servants uniting together to burn down the plantation - resulted in the plantation/ownership class inventing race and codifying it into centuries of law to slightly improve conditions for 'the white race' at the structural expense of 'the black race,' so the former would unite 'as a race' against the latter to maintain materially superior conditions. Harriet reminds us that MLK advocated for multi-racial labor solidarity through unions, and how the unprecedented uprisings of the last month as a reaction to George Floyd's murder by police may be a sign of growing multi-racial, working class solidarity. Max explains the "micro" pieces of racism with attention to stereotypes, prejudices, and microaggressions, then provides an overview of a powerpoint lecture called "Black Minds Matter" by Dr. Luke Wood. (Max failed to read the last slide which had proposed policy solutions like getting rid of school suspensions and integration of restorative justice programs, and more - see below).
